Get up close to these gigantic mammals on a whale watching tour or spot them from various spots along the coastline. The southern right and humpback whales are most prevalent in Australia’s South West and migrate in large numbers. Humpback sightings start in the region from mid May. The best time to see them around Albany and Augusta is from mid May to August and off Dunsborough and Busselton coast from mid September to mid December. The southern right whales are most commonly sighted in Albany and Augusta later in the season from August to October. Blue whales are occasionally sighted in the Albany area from May to June and around Dunsborough and Busselton from November to December. Southern Right Whale These whales can be easily identified as, unlike most whales, they do not have a dorsal fin! There are so many scenic routes to try, here are some of our favourites: Scotsdale Tourist Drive – sealed A 34km drive through Denmark’s picturesque countryside with views to the spectacular coastline. Be sure to also journey along the Mt Shadforth scenic drive nearby (has small unsealed sections). Frenchman Bay Drive - sealed Only 15 minutes from Albany, this 18km drive takes you south around Princess Royal Harbour through to the Torndirrup National Park. Flora Road Scenic Drive unsealed Flora Road, a 7km scenic gravel road between Coalfields Highway, Allanson and Mungalup Road, south of Collie. Karri Forest Explorer – sealed and unsealed This 86km self drive tour winds through some of the region’s most magnificent karri forest. The drive starts just outside the historic timber town of Pemberton. D’Entrecasteaux Drive - sealed A 6km scenic drive from Wheatley Coast Road at Windy Harbour to Point D’Entrecasteaux. Tuart Drive - sealed Take a leisurely tourist drive through the Ludlow Forest National Park 15km north east of Busselton to capture the beauty of the giant tuart trees. Caves Road – sealed Following the Margaret River Wine Region north to south, journey through farmland, vineyard and cave country to the spectacular Boranup Forest. Porongurup and Stirling Range national parks sealed to Bluff Knoll car park Starting just 15 minutes east of Mount Barker the 12km Porongurup Range with distinctive granite peaks and wineries along the way provide a picturesque backdrop. Continue onto the Stirling Range Drive which stretches 65km from east to west. The Golden Triangle - sealed A truly stunning scenic 100km drive of meandering road that forms a triangle from Bridgetown, Balingup, Nannup back to Bridgetown through magnificent scenery, much of it along the banks of the Blackwood River. Winter is a great time to discover the Cape to Cape Track, which winds its way along the rugged coast from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin. There are many entry points to the track with multi-day and short walk options including an access friendly section at the northern end of the region.
