This is a place where a jetty
stretches nearly two kilometres out
to sea, where the famous wines are
only matched by their magnificent
place of origin, where wild dolphins
check out humans and whales use
the warm ocean current as a super
highway for their annual migration.
This winter there are heaps of
specials on a wide range of
accommodation, tours and
attractions.
Whether you’re heading down with
the family or taking your loved
one on a romantic few days away,

Hundreds of humpback, southern right and occasionally blue whales play, feed, breed
and travel close to the coast during June to December. Get up close to these gigantic
mammals on a whale watching tour or spot them from various spots along the coastline.
The southern right and humpback
whales are most prevalent in
Australia’s South West and migrate in
large numbers. Humpback sightings
start in the region from mid May.
The best time to see them around
Albany and Augusta is from mid May
to August and off Dunsborough
and Busselton coast from mid
September to mid December.
The southern right whales are most
commonly sighted in Albany and
Augusta later in the season from
August to October.
Blue whales are occasionally sighted
in the Albany area from May to
June and around Dunsborough
and Busselton from November to
December.

Identifying a whale
Humpback Whale
Known to be the most
acrobatic of whales, the
humpback often provides
awesome displays of
breaching, sky hopping and
tail slapping.
Southern Right Whale
These whales can be easily
identified as, unlike most
whales, they do not have a
dorsal fin!
Blue Whale
The blue whale is the largest
creature that has ever lived
on earth, dwarfing even
dinosaurs.

Take a drive to the Cape Naturaliste
Lighthouse and Maritime
Museum, just 13 kilometres from
Dunsborough.
Climb to the top of the lighthouse
for panoramic 360 degree views
across Geographe Bay, the Indian
Ocean and Cape Naturaliste.
A perfect vantage point for
spotting whales on their annual
migration, visitors can experience
the magic of watching them
breach and play in Geographe
Bay from the purpose-built whale
watching platform.
Situated nine kilometres from the
township of Augusta is the Cape
Leeuwin Lighthouse.
It is the tallest lighthouse on
mainland Australia. The 116-yearold lighthouse sits on the tip of a
spectacular peninsula where the
Indian and Southern Oceans meet.
Surrounded by green rolling
hills, rocky coastal outcrops and
wildflowers, it also boasts a café
– great for a tea break or lunch.
Visitors can tour this working
lighthouse that guards one of the
world’s most dangerous shipping
lanes.
Be sure to set some time aside
to visit the region’s wineries,
breweries, restaurants and trendy
cafés.
With over 150 cellar doors and
eight breweries, you’ll have a
tough time deciding which ones
to visit. A gourmet lunch at one of

The Southern Ocean in winter is a spectacular display as it crashes against the rugged cliffs
and historic rock formations. Pods of whales, dolphins and seals can often be seen frolicking
just off the coast. The scenery dramatically transforms as you move inland to swollen rivers,
vast mountain ranges, charming country towns and lush green farmers fields.
The town of Denmark, which sits
on the banks of the Denmark River,
has views over tall tree forests
and vineyards to the ocean. The
coastline here varies between
rugged and tranquil lagoon-like
bays. Denmark’s highly acclaimed
wines have distinct characteristics
and most can be tasted at the
cellar door.
Be sure to take scenic drives such
as the Scotsdale Tourist Drive or
Mount Shadforth Scenic Drive,
where you can stop off at boutique
galleries and wineries.
