SIKARAN “The Fighting Art of the Filipino Farmer”
By Emmanuel del Espiritu Santo Querubin
www.sikaranpilipinas.com
This is the only fully authorized book about Sikaran authorized by Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo.
This book neither intends nor claims to reveal any mysticism or secret of
Sikaran. This is solely because there are neither secrets nor mysteries involved in
Sikaran. Sikaran is composed of purely offensive and defensive maneuvers systematically organized as an effective fighting art and an exciting sport.
This is a must for all practitioners whether practitioners of Sikaran or not.

In the 1960’s Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo developed Sikaran Balangkas
with the assistance of Jaime Geronimo and Emmanuel Querubin, inspired and encouraged by the Sikaran elders of Baras, Rizal led by Cipriano Geronimo (last Hari of
Baras), Melencio Bigasin, Manuel Ocampo (both Hari-turned Guro) Aurelio Cabacob, Angeles Pilapil, and Servillano Javier (all Sikaran Guros).
When Melton Geronimo appointed Emmanuel Querubin Executive Assistant
for Research and Standards in the 1960’s, it became his duty and responsibility to
journalize everything regarding Sikaran, serve as record-keeper, disseminate, and
share what has been entrusted to him by Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo.
This book, Original Balangkas of Sikaran is designed to provide accurate and
authoritative information with regard to the subject matter covered

The Passing of the Sikaran Torch
In 1893, Cipriano Geronimo was
born, when his father Bonifacio
Geronimo was 46 years old. At an
early age, Cipriano was prepared to
someday take the place of his
father as the head of the Geronimo
Sikaran lineage. Cipriano’s preparation was not limited to the physical aspects of Sikaran. Bonifacio
taught his son Cipriano, how to be
a leader and the importance of
education. Bonifacio instilled in
Cipriano the need to understand
that Sikaran and Education are the
opposite sides of the same coin.
They are the parts that make the
coin.
Knowing Sikaran is not just
doing the physical motions or
following the movements. One
must be aware of the why, the how,
the when, and the what, of a
particular technique. One must
develop his own maneuver, based
on his own physical ability, capability, and limitations.
Constant practice develops
the muscles in varying degrees or
details. Over time, Cipriano developed the ability to use one’s
knowledge effectively and readily
in execution or performance, and
all the skills to be a hari (champion). This experience prepared him
to pass on his expertise in Sikaran
to his son Meliton.
On March 10, 1927, amidst
the ringing of the bells in Baras,
Meliton, the first son of Cipriano
was born. Even at a very young
age, Cipriano honed Meliton in all
the aspects of Sikaran. This is the
reason why the Geronimo Sikaran
lineage survived the test of time.
The leadership of Supremo
Meliton C. Geronimo can best be
described as a strong, wise, and
enlightening leadership. Through
his enlightened leadership, he
introduced Sikaran in the International world of unarmed martial
arts. Through his efforts, the
Philippines became a member of
the Asian Karate Association.
Sikaran was referred to as a style
of Philippine Karate, as Shotokan
is referred to as Japanese Karate,
Shorin-ryu as a style of Okinawan
Karate and Tang Soo Doo as a
style of Korean Karate.
Through his leadership, the
Philippines garnered seven gold
medals in six Asian Karate Championships. When the World Union
of Karate-do Organizations
(WUKO) was formed in 1970,
Meliton C. Geronimo was a
signatory member representing the
Philippines.
When Supremo Meliton
Geronimo exported Sikaran to
Malaysia, through his students
Emmanuel Querubin, Nestor
Principe, Luisito dela Cruz, and
Vince Vasallo, it became the
foundation of two independent
schools that are now also recognized in the international world of
martial arts. In Malaysia, Clement
Soo (#257) is acknowledged as the
founder of the Goshin- ryu School
of the Karate League of Malaysia.
The Ren Yi Ku KwanTang Sau
Dao School of Loke Meng Kwang
(#354) is one of the most successful and biggest martial art organizations in Great Britain.
Supremo Meliton Geronimo’s, leadership is not limited in
the improvement and development
of Sikaran as a unique, original,
and effective fighting art. Administration-wise, he formulated the
protocols governing Sikaran as an
international martial art. Supremo
Meliton Geronimo’s leadership is
beyond any textbook-grade position in a scale of ranks and qualities.
Biyakid (gerund of biyak
- to split) is the signature kick of
Sikaran. There are stories of
Sikaran Haris who have knocked
down a carabao with a biyakid to
the head. On its face value, this
feat sounds like too incredible to
be true. However, Supremo Meliton Geronimo, believes that by
following the principles of physics
it can be done. He even gives as an
example Masutatsu Oyama, founder of Kyukoshinkai Karate who
was said to have killed a buffalo,
with his bare hands, and feet,
which was later found to be too
badly battered and bruised for
human consumption.
Supremo Meliton Geronimo, explained the proper delivery
of biyakid based on the principles
of physics. This is the favorite kick
of most SIKARAN hari’s of old
because it is very effective at any
fighting range. This kick was
developed by spinning the body
with the temple, the spine, and the
back of the head, as the favorite
targets.
There are three motions
that determine the effectiveness of
a biyakid. First is the spin of the
body that creates the centrifugal
force. Second is the turn of the hips
that creates the rotational thrusting
force and third is the snap back
from the knee that propels the heel
to the target and creates the motion
that offers a quick and vigorous
recovery of the kicking leg. Any
deviation from this process will
compromise the one-strike-one-kill
property of the biyakid
All the techniques of
Sikaran, were explained by Supre-
time activity of farmers, to an
international modern sport. As
Grandmaster, this perhaps is
one of the great contributions of
Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo,
to Sikaran, bringing the art
from the 16th Century to the
21st Century.
As an Administrator,
Supremo Meliton Geronimo is
unsurpassed. When he formed
the Sikaran Brotherhood of the
Philippines, he envisioned an
association with a worldwide
membership. He did not see the
association as a local group that
meets on weekends for a gettogether. What he envisioned
was an international organization composed of Sikaranistas

In the same manner that
Supremo Meliton Geronimo was
trained by his father to be the great
leader that he is, he prepared
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., to be a
leader with a more modern approach to leadership.
When Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., was born, there was no
ringing of bells. However, his birth
was heralded by typhoon Dading,
one of the strongest and most
devastating act of nature in that
decade. Amidst the rain, strong
winds, thunder, and lightning,
Meliton C. Geronimo, Sr., raised
his son to the sky as a gesture of
offering and swore that Junior will
someday take his place as Sikaran
master. While he was learning to
walk, Junior was also learning how
to kick and be a fighter. While he
was learning to read and write, he
was learning the history of Sikaran.
Meliton Junior was tutored in
Sikaran, not only by his father, but
also by his grandfather Cipriano,
and the other Sikaran elders of
Baras.
When his mother and
siblings migrated to the United
States, Meliton, Jr., continued his
studies graduating in High School
from the Balboa High School in
San Francisco.
Meliton, Jr., attended San
Francisco City College, later
transferring to Sonoma College, to
pursue an Engineering course. His
education prepared him for the
eventual transfer of the leadership
of the Geronimo lineage of Sikaran. His education plus the
positive genes he inherited from
his parents gave him the ability to
be a critical thinker. Looking at

many and serious. However, he
is also aware that the problems
are not un-surmountable. Having
the critical thinking of an engineer, he laid a plan in solving the
big problem by dissecting it and
breaking it down to the minutest
components. He will then solve
the small problems one at a time.
These problems took at least three
years to accumulate and Meliton,
Jr., is aware that it may take time
to be solved. The first problem that
he has to tackle is to bring back to
the fold the members who left and
those that are inactive. He has to
raise money to fund the projects
of the brotherhood, such as seminars, meetings, tournaments, and
registration with the Securities and
Exchange Commission, which the
past acting in -charge let expire.
Meliton, Jr., is now finishing the
2013 Report of Activities, which
the S.E.C. requires.
Another pressing problem
that Meliton, Jr., considers major
is the uncontrolled promotion to
incredulous high grades. These
promotions need to be reviewed
accordingly.
As President of the World
Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines, and the final authority in
Sikaran, Meliton, Jr., need to call
on his organizational skill. He
needs to rely on his self- confidence, logical and creative opinion,
and judgment.
A New Day in Sikaran is Dawning
On March 7, 2015, Sikaran will
shine its new light. It will be a
new dawn for this centuries old
original Filipino Art of Fighting.
On this day, a new leadership will
take over. Pantas (Master) Meliton
S. Geronimo, Jr. will officially
assume the total leadership of
Sikaran. He will be the final authority in Sikaran. He is the principal commanding authority of the
Geronimo Sikaran lineage.
Unlike his father, Supremo
Meliton C. Geronimo whose birth
was announced by ringing of the
bells in Baras, Pantas Meliton S.
Geronimo’s birth was heralded
by a powerful and devastating
typhoon of the decade. Is this an
omen of the drastic changes he
needs to undertake in order to set
straight the damage done, due to
the mismanagement by the acting
in-charge.
Compared to the militaristic leadership of his father, and
the autocratic leadership of the
acing in-charge, Pantas Meliton S.
Junior’s leadership is democratic,
modern, and task-oriented.
Democratic leadership is
participative in nature. The leader
and the subordinates participate
in decision-making. Although the
final decision rests on the leader,
the subordinates’ morale is boosted because they play a part in
the process of the decision-making. They accept changes easily,
having been a part in the process.
The leader and the team set predetermined goals and work together
to achieve these goals and agree
to follow the direction set by the
leader. Everyone is given a certain
task to perform. Based on performance results, rewards or punishments, are handed out.

the future. Being able to improve
the current situation, he is able to
attract followers and inspire their
needed commitment for whatever
cause to succeed.
When he took over as President of World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines, There was
a proposition for him to assume the
title Supremo.
“When the Grandmasters of the
Asian Karate Association promoted my father in 1966, he was
given the title Soke (founder)
with the rank of 10th Degree Red
Belt, the highest rank in Sikaran,
and the only authority who can
promote. My father promoted me
to the 9th Degree Red and White
Belt. There is several 9th Degree
Red and White Belts presently but
to “always keep an open mind,
because you may learn something
even from the dull and ignorant.”
The first thing that Pantas Meliton, Jr., did was to step
back and look at the big picture
of Sikaran. He realized that the
political status of Sikaran is too
“centralized.” To keep up with the
needs and a more efficient Sikaran
organization, he is “de-centraliz-
ing” the command hierarchy.
He reviewed the By-laws
of the World Sikaran Brotherhood
of the Philippines and scrutinized
it, so it can be streamlined to
produce the desired effect. After a
careful study of the By-laws, Pantas Meliton, Jr., sought the advice
of his consultative team.
The first action taken was
to form the World Sikaran Brotherhood (sans the Philippines) to be
the International umbrella organization of all the country chapters.
Each country chapter will have a
Country Director, including the
Philippines, who will automatically be a member of the International
Executive Council. Each Country Chapter will have autonomy.
However, all promotions to the
6th Black Belt Degree to the 9th
Degree Red and White Belt will
be through the World Sikaran
Brotherhood General Headquarters. Certificates of Promotion, to
be valid, must be signed by Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. The
authority to promote anybody in
Sikaran was delegated to him by
his father and nobody else. However, he can delegate this authority to a Technical Committee to
further “de-centralize” administration of the World Sikaran Brotherhood. Being a Senior Instructor or
high-ranking Black Belt, does not
automatically give the authority to
promote anyone to the Black Belt
Degree. Authority to promote was
delegated only to Pantas Meliton
S. Geronimo, Jr., and no one else.
Anybody promoting anyone to the
Black Belt Degree is usurping authority, and such promotion is not
honored and considered bogus and
fake.
To better understand the
purpose of the World Sikaran
Brotherhood, it is necessary to
reprint hereunder Article I, Section
1. Declaration of Purpose of the
By-laws:
“The World Sikaran Brotherhood (WSB) is a non-profit Sports Association of Sikaran aficionados, practitioners, instructors and senior officers and members of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines
(WSBP) based primarily in and outside of the Philippines, aimed at continuing the legacy of Sikaran Grandmaster Meliton C. Geronimo, 10th Degree Red Belt, in promoting and propagating Sikaran, the unique
and original Filipino Art of Foot-fighting, all over the world; to establish a solid and unified association of
all Sikaran enthusiasts who adhere to the methodology, teaching and foundation initiated by Grandmaster
Geronimo when he first introduced Sikaran to the martial arts world in 1958 not only in the Philippines but
all over Asia and eventually around the world; to strengthen the research and development towards a more
progressive art; to produce and publish books, instructional videos, and other related materials; to establish
various programs that shall strengthen the recognition of Sikaran and the welfare of all WSB members.”
Presently, members of the
World Sikaran Brotherhood in
other countries almost outnumber
members in the Philippines. The
biggest concentration of foreign
Sikaranistas are in the United
States and in Canada. In fact,
the World Sikaran brotherhood
of Canada has held three World
Sikaran Tournaments. Pantas Meliton, Jr., envisions a World Tournament held in the different member
countries, at least once every three
(3) years. If plans push through,
the next World Tournament may
be held in the Philippines or the
West Coast of the United States of
America. The first Sikaran Hall of
Fame is also on the horizon. On
these occasions, Pantas Meliton
S. Geronimo, Jr., plans to have all
the Country Chapters in the world
present.
Like his father, Pantas
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., is
always willing to mix it out with
every Sikaranista who is available,
and willing.
Meliton S. Geronimo,
Jr.’s, training is well balanced in
the organizational as well as the
physical aspects of Sikaran. He
holds office at the Headquarters
of the World Sikaran Brotherhood
in Vallejo, and trains at the World
Sikaran Brotherhood central gym,
also situated in Vallejo. He plans
to hold gatherings, seminars, clinics, and classes at his new gym.

One of the complaints of
the members is the lack of activities of the organization. To remedy
this situation, the new leadership
will require each Country Chapter
to submit an Annual Schedule of
Activities. He will consolidate all
these schedules with the WSB’s
Annual Schedule of Activities.
One of these activities is to hold a
seminar in each regional chapter.
These seminars will be handled by
the WSBP Technical Committee.
The Country Chapter’s responsibility is to provide the venue
and the participants. Once a year,
the headquarters will also hold a
seminar and representatives from
the Country Chapters will be invited. To achieve this goal, Pantas
Meliton, Jr., is now in the process
of soliciting sponsors to fund these
programs.
Another program that
Meliton, Jr., has his sight on is the
Teacher’s Academy. The Provin-
cial Government of Rizal has set
aside the funding for this academy
in order to provide enough instructors for all the public schools in
Rizal. Meliton, Jr., has ambitions
to send Sikaran Teachers to different countries.
Part of the Teacher’s Academy is a program for Tournament
Officials.
In the last “World Sikaran
Tournament,” there were questions
regarding the tournament rules.”
There were some last minute
changes that were not previously approved. In fact, there were
participants who complained that
the rules used in this tournament
were different from the rules in the
previous World Sikaran Tournaments. People who have witnessed
tournaments in the Philippines
were surprised to find out that full
contact kick to the head was not
allowed, even with the use of head
protective gear.
To avoid these discrepancies in the future only Tournament
Officials certified and licensed by
the World Sikaran Brotherhood
will be allowed to officiate. Tournament Rules and Regulations will
be distributed to all the participants at least two months prior to
the competition.
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., is a firm believer of drills
and forms. He is a stickler for training.
In 2013, during the National Tournament in Baras, Rizal,
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.,
using his personal funds, provided
the officials with a Blue Barong
Tagalog to identify them from the
contestants and the audience.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., wants to professionalize
Sikaran Tournaments, especially
international competitions.
The first requirement of a
professional international competition is the professional appearance
and demeanor of the officials.
When the officials present a professional bearing, the behavior rubs
on the participants, resulting in a
professional competition.
The World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines’ new President
has a tough and rough road in front of him, but Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., is ready and excited because he knows the members of the WSBP
all want change for the better. Change for the better is what he proposes
to bring. He envisions a World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines
without “free loaders.” He will instill in every member the desire to improve the organization by doing their part no matter how small it may be,
because the total is the “sum of all the parts.” Surely, with this dedication
Sikaran’s new day is now dawning.
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., like his
father Meliton C. Geronimo, Sr., not
only is a leader but also a fighter.
Here he displays his first trophy.
