Global Responsibility
Fitts | Stair Components
Fitts Industries, Inc. is dedicated to the efficient use of our sustainable natural resources. Great
lengths are taken everyday in the procurement and processing of raw materials to reduce the
effects on our planet. Our responsibility as stewards of lumber greatly reduce negative strains
on our suppliers and make effective and efficient use of those materials.
Careful lengths are taken to minimize waste of
our sustainable resources

Fitts kiln dries its’ lumber to control
the equilibrium moisture content. A
process that is important in
controlling the stability of laminated
wood products. Most stair
components are made of glued
“plies” of wood. Cutting for solid
blanks of wood creates far more
waste and would not be cost
effective. The process of gluing plies
of wood creates less waste, provides
a more economical product and
stable product, and creates less
burden on the demand of lumber.
In the processing of materials, lumber is
air dried and later dried in dry kilns. Fitts
Industries, Inc. utilizes sawdust waste:
burning this material and utilizing this
heat to create steam to operate the kilns.
In effect, reducing the amount of electrical
power needed in our operation. The air
drying process also eliminates the need to
run pre-driers that put a strain on the
power grid. Even the stacking sticks you
see between the boards are recycled time
and time again to minimize waste.
Steam powered dry kilns.
Global Re sponsibility
Fitts utilizes thin curf saw blades which
reduce the amount of waste material that
is created by a thicker saw blade, which
in turn cuts a thicker section of a board.
(Note - Thin Curf Saw Blade, lower section of photo)
Fitts Industries, Inc. operates an extensive
inventory management software system

warehousing facility, as well as in our
80,000 square foot Tacoma warehouse. This technology radically reduces internal
paperwork and therefore reduces the amount of paper used in day to day operations.
Lean manufacturing techniques are utilized throughout our operations limiting the amount of
waste created by our plant, as well as the employees of our company.
Even the catalog you are reading today is created out of paper containing 10% post
consumer waste.
These processes are done because it makes the most sense economically, although it is a
responsibility that we share globally. Celebrating our 60th year in business, Fitts Industries,
Inc. is dedicated to quality, efficient manufacturing that will benefit you and your family in
more ways than just having a beautiful home.

The Basics
Stairs are one of the most architecturally significant features of the home, and at the same time one of the most
difficult features to design. For the novice or the beginner, there are several things to take into
consideration when choosing the correct stair system for your home:
Is the stair ”Post-to-Post“ or “Over-the-Post”?
What species of wood match the consistency of the home?
Are the stairs carpeted or bare wood?
What turnings – newel, baluster and handrail profiles match the theme of the home?
Most importantly – What are the local building codes regarding stairs in your area?

The Be auty of Wood
The Beauty of Wood
For centuries craftsman have carved and machined
wooden balustride systems. Thankfully, although the
turning process has become automated, classical styles
have remained the focus of taste. Sheraton©,
Canterbury© & Hampton turnings based off of the
classical furniture styles still adorn the most stylish of
American decor, design and architecture.
What continues to change are the species of materials
stair components are constructed from. Traditional Red
Oak and Beech products have shifted to match flooring
alternatives creating an explosion of wood species on
the market.
Fitts manufactures a stock line of stair components in:

Fitts Sheraton© Designs
Inspired by 1700’s English Furniture maker Thomas
Sheraton, Fitts’ handsome Sherton© family of Stair
Components is based on his early classic furniture
designs. Ornatley turned serpentine and reeded legs
became the staple of an era and have inspired Fitts
design patented turnings.
Fitts Sheraton© collection features plain, fluted and rope
twisted turnings that are stylized in conjunction with
Traditional, Georgian, Country French and English
Tudor architectural themes.

Wrought Iron
Wrought Iron Stair Components
By Fitts
For centuries smiths have worked and forged wrought
iron. A staple of Europeon style and elegance, wrought
iron railings have adorned the sophisticated residences
of the upper classes since the 15th-16th century.
The once popular look of iron rail and balustres have
adopted the soft and sophisticated warmth of wrought
iron balustrade and wooden handrails.
Today, wrought iron can be found in a variety of
architectural themes and has become an additional
design application to wood. With a myriad of design
and layout options, one can now personalize the home
with a variety of layouts and finishes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I Paint Wrought Iron Product?
Yes, you can. For interior use, we suggest using one or two coats of lacquer
or oil based paint for metal.
Can I Use Wrought Iron Product for Exterior Applications?
Yes, you can. For exterior use we suggest using two coats of exterior, oil
based, metal paint for protection from the elements. We suggest not
mounting wrought iron into concrete or brick. These substances are porous
and trap water which can corrode iron product over time.
How Do I Cut or Trim Wrought Iron Products?
We suggest the use of a band saw with a metal cutting blade, but any
metal cutting saw will work.
Can I Replace My Wood Balusters with Wrought Iron and Still Use the
Same Piece of Handrail?
This is a bit tricky. In most cases - we say no. The layout of the balusters is
going to differ. Due to code issues like sphere rules, and the design of the
balusters you select, layouts are going to differ - as will the holes needed
to be bored in the handrail.

Tubular Iron
Baluste rs
NEW PRODUCT
Fitts introduces the next generation of wrought iron balusters with its Tubular Iron
system. Many Tubular Iron balusters have been created “oversized” to aid in the
cost of manufacturing, but have lost the delicate detail of the or nate twists and
baskets. Fitts painstakingly worked to maintain the consistency of its Hollow
products to its extensive solid iron baluster of fering.
Hollow Iron:
s Cost ef fective
s Easier to cut and install
s Easier to ship
s Same elegant appearance as solid product
Like Fitts solid iron products, tubular iron is designed to be cut from the bottom. The top has been
manufactured with a 1/2” round pin for ease of installation into the handrails and fittings. Hollow Iron
balusters are available in: Black, Antique Bronze, Antique Nickel & Rubbed Bronze in the following profiles:

Newels are designed to work in Post-to-Post or Over-the-Post installations. Post-to-Post newels have top
“square sections” designed to accept handrails,-which often times are arriving at the newels at
differing rake angles. Over-the-Post Newels are designed with a series of “pin tops” that will accept
fittings. Fittings handle the changes in rake angle and run over the posts. In a classic L-Shaped stair,
there are three variations of newel post commonly used:

Baluste r Se le ction
Baluster selection is usually determined by the size of the newel post and/or handrails that work
within the architectural theme of the home. The use of smaller 3” newel posts tend to work better
with 1-1/4” balusters and 2” and 2-1/4” handrail profiles. Larger 3-1/2” posts, as well as box
newels are more compatible with 1-3/4” balustrade and 2-5/8” handrails. Iron balusters are the
most versitile and will work with both larger and smaller handrails and turnings.
Balusters are often laid out in two variations. The first is a Tread Oriented System in which turnings
are parallel to the tread. The second and more common variation is a Rail Oriented System in which
the turning is parallel the angle of the handrail. Most of your Wrought Iron systems work as Rail
Oriented Balustrade systems.
Tread Oriented Balustrade System

58
Rail Oriented Balustrade System
It is important to note the building that focus’ on Balustre codes spacing on the rake angle
handrails, (ascending/descending the stair), as well as the balcony or landing railing of the
staircase. The IRC 2006 Residential Codes state that baluster spacing not allow a 4-3/8” spherical
object pass between the balusters on the rake of a stair, and not allow a 4” spherical object pass
between the balustrade on the balcony of the stair. It is important to understand these codes before
laying out your balustrade system.
Wood balusters are usually ordered in the same wood species as the newel posts and rail, but can
be purchased in a paint grade or primed finish.
A simplified listing of baluster lengths is located on pages 74-77 in this catalog.

Fittings Se le ction
Fittings are designed to provide the necessary changes in rake angles in handrail and provide a
continuous gripping surface throughout the stair. Fitts Industries, Inc. offers fittings in five handrail
profiles: F6010, F6210, F6410, F6710 and F6910. Fittings are designed in three major families:
Starting Fittings – The beginning of the handrail gripping surface
Transition Fittings – Fittings that are trasitioning units of a handrail surface
Gooseneck Fittings – Fittings used to allow for transition in height and (or) direction
in either a landing or a balcony handrail

Why would I need an 18’ Length of Handrail?
Fitts introduces stock 18’ handrails in Solid Cap 6010 Oak, Maple & Cherry
Traditional building continues to evolve and with these advancements require the need for new
creative products. Fitts introduces 18’ handrail and 22’ bending handrails, as well as pin top newels that will mount into standard 1-1/2” handrail bases. This alleviates the need to add a fitting into
the rail, and lowering the cost. As more residential homes have been designed with10-foot ceilings
and engineered floor joists, the standard rise and run (vertical and horizontal) dimensions change,
thus increasing the length of handrails needed. This also occurs on curve stairs creating the need
to 22’ long sections of bending handrails. Pin top intermediate newels have been designed with a
1-inch top dowel pin so that it can be installed directly into standard rail profiles — other profiles of
pintop intermediate newels are available .
