COMPETITIONS OCTOBER / NOVEMBER4
MISS CONGENIALITY9
You would have to be colour-blind to not realise that MPSAmag’s October issue is a
bumper pink edition in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed
worldwide. Our team looked into the amazing work the PinkDrive is doing across South
Africa, as well as the various male celebrities that are lending their voices to breast cancer
awareness organisations including tough-guy actor Liam Neeson, creator of Star Wars and
Indiana Jones franchises, George Lucas and Rob Lowe who lost his mother to the disease.
We’ve also included a self-breast examination guide to educate you on how to check for
lumps because early detection saves lives. While no scientific correlation between breast
implants and breast cancer has been found, we also included a piece on the health risks associated with breast
implants.

Pink is not just about babes and bosoms, we also celebrate the colour in the men’s section with a survey article,
Pink is the new black. Talking about colour, our researchers also did an interesting study on the psychology of
colour marketing. Who knows, you might be eating those illegal foods not because of a lack of willpower but
because your favourite brand’s colour dictates that you do so…
While we’re on the topic of eating the wrong foods, we also looked at ways to lose weight unintentionally.

Yip, you read that right, check out the article for the lazy way out. However, if you’re aim is to shake off those
unwanted kilos intentionally, you will find ‘The big fitness trends’ article of great interest. If you’ve literally been
working your butt off but still can’t see results because of stubborn belly fat, read our tips on why you don’t have
a six-pack and find out how to get your abs into tip-top shape.
If sweating to get results is not your thing, then you might prefer the Miss Cosmetic Surgery approach. It’s real,
trust us. We also look at other pageants which include the 2014 winners of Miss Commonwealth South Africa and
Miss Earth SA. We’re also reminding you that Miss SA casting dates are set for October. If you think that pageants
are not for you, you might be sadly mistaken. Read our article about a six-year old multi-millionaire who made
her fortune through pageantry. Changed your mind yet?

While there is a fine line between pageantry and modelling, the distinction between modelling and acting is
becoming even smaller. Our gorgeous cover model, Aishwarya Rai proves that models-turned-actresses are to be
taken seriously, especially when you consider that many reckon she put Bollywood on the international showbiz
map. If modelling sounds like a career you could take seriously, take our fun quiz and read our article on how to

down at your wrist and tell us that you don’t need advice on what
your timepiece really says about you. We also provide you with a male
fashion fit guide and 5 styles that you must avoid at all costs. You
might have a few of those items in your wardrobe so donate it to your
favourite charity this weekend.
Remember, that being a beauty without a cause is simply being
a beautiful shell. If you let your inner beauty complement or even
overshadow your attractive exterior, I guarantee you that you will be
booked for every modelling job that you apply for and you will win
every pageant hands down. Let the month of October be a heartfelt
one.
Until next month, stay beautiful!

ALL EVENTS WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE ACPP HALL, 190 Quagga Street, Proclamation Hill, Pretoria West
Congeniality
Miss
The month of October is decked in all shades of pink. Yes, breast cancer awareness month
has arrived and the colour pink is there to remind us of this annual event.
While I know both women and men can be diagnosed with this horrid disease, as a
woman, this month always reminds me of how there are so many women out there who
battle this illness not only for a calendar month, but every day before and after October
arrives. It also reminds me how blessed I am to be healthy.
Looking at breast cancer, to be honest, I have never had to see this disease impact any
women in my life directly. I have never gone through anything like this with someone. Yes,
I do know of a few ladies who have been impacted by it, but have never really been in a
position where I can understand what they are really going through. Which leads me to
think of all those who I don’t know of. Like my neighbour, or the lady at the supermarket
where I buy groceries or maybe even that woman who drove like a maniac in traffic this
morning. These ladies could all secretly be carrying some burden that only those closest to
them can really comprehend. You never know what journey someone else is facing.
I’m going to keep this short and sweet – let’s not beat around the bush. Aside from doing
your bit to raise awareness for breast cancer this month, I would like to challenge you to
actively start being more considerate towards other women in general. Whether they are
ill or not, it’s time to start being more supportive of other ladies.
As women, we are so quick to judge and talk bad about one another – without even
stopping for one moment to consider who we are hurting and how it could be impacting
them. Whether it be paying a bill or buying groceries or sitting in endless traffic, remember
that whoever you come into contact with is fighting their own battle. Young or old, fat or
thin. No matter the religion, ethnicity or the race, we as women need to start making the
choice of being more considerate and understanding towards one another.
Enough with the back stabbing and bad mouthing – let’s work together to ensure that
when another woman is fighting a war, we are actually a friend and not a foe.
Let the colour pink remind you of how powerful a movement in the same direction
can be.
Stay blessed, Miss Congeniality

The
fairest ladies
in all the
commonwealth
By Chantal Riley
Recently MPSAmag had the opportunity to attend the prestigious Commonwealth Pageants South Africa crowning,
a platform for women of all ages to become charity and cultural ambassadors within South Africa and the broader
international community. The organisation’s goal is to go beyond simply handing out a title but are committed to
empowering women with the knowledge needed to bring change to communities in need.
Their goal is to bring sustainable change through their projects which focus primarily on social upliftment, food
relief and orphaned children. In addition, the title winners are able to showcase their projects and compete on an
international stage at Miss Commonwealth International - Triple Crown in London annually.
The South African Triple Crown consists of Miss Teen, Miss and Mrs Commonwealth. The three pageants run alongside
each other with Miss Teen open to ladies between 16-19 years, Miss for contestants that are 20 years and up and the
Mrs category for married women and contestants that are 25 years and up.
MPSAmag spoke the winners about what the titles mean to them.

1. Why did you enter?
I entered because the Commonwealth pageant supports charity work and
provides an opportunity for me to make a difference in people’s lives. I am
blessed with many life opportunities and I wish to pass that onto younger
generations, by shining my light for those who do not yet know how to do
it themselves. For now, my voice is through the Commonwealth pageant.
2. Did you think you would win the title?
A big part of my personality is determination and perseverance. Whenever
I put my heart and mind towards a goal, I never give up. I worked hard in the
months leading up to the final as it had a true and real meaning to me. In my
heart, I really thought I had a good chance to make the top five but I didn’t
expect to win the title as my fellow finalists were very strong contestants.

Miss Teen Commonwealth 2015
Miss Teen Commonwealth 2015 Daniela Gasser (17), grade 11 learner
at Bryanston High
3. What are your intentions with the title?
I intend on providing children with a voice so that they
too can reach their goals in life. I am striving to help them
get better standards of living, health and education, and
to widen their vision for their own lives - providing them
with hope. I intend on being a gracious role model and to
continue raising funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s
Hospital Trust which will ensure health care to the children
of South Africa.
4. Have you won any other titles?
No,
being crowned as South Africa’s Miss Teen
Commonwealth is my first title.
5. What lessons have you learnt from this
journey?
I
have learnt that your family is your most important
support system. I have learnt that perseverance, faith and
self-belief is crucial. Rejection is a common reoccurrence
in life and it comes in many shapes and forms but you
can’t allow it to hold you back from achieving what you
want in life.
are the future and we need to work towards offering
them good support systems so that they too can
embrace life to the fullest.
10. What would you tell a girl suffering
from low self-esteem?
A piece of advice that I would give her is that “those
that matter don’t mind and those that mind don’t
matter”, meaning that no one should judge you on
how you look, what you do or what you say, you
have as much right to be yourself just as others do.
Everyone has their own sense of beauty and there
is no such thing as being ‘perfect’ but rather being
‘unique’.
11. One of the most famous beauty
pageant questions is ‘what’s the
essence of a woman?’ So what would
your answer be?
The ability to be loving and compassionate, standing
tall and being the rock of the family. To carry herself
with grace, confidence and pride.
6. What was the best part of the journey
and the most difficult?
12. Which CD is playing in your car
right now?
favourite part of my journey thus far has been
working at the Baragwaneth Paediatric Hospital in Soweto,
being exposed to a whole new environment and being
able to learn from others was truly an experience I will
never forget. However, the most difficult part was learning
how to accept that you can’t change the world all at once
and that the little bit that you are contributing is enough.
13. What is your favourite book?
My
7. What is the most important lesson
pageantry and modelling has taught you?
It has taught me to stay true to myself regardless of outside
influences. This industry has allowed me to discover who I
am as a person and to find my strengths and weaknesses.
8. Who or what inspires you the most and
why?
A lot of my inspiration comes from my family as well
as from myself. I come from a very humble home where
silver platters do not exist, however this has shown me
that in life there are no limitations only the ones you set
for yourself. With a bit of hope, faith and trust many doors
will open and thus anything is possible.
9. Who is your supported charity of choice
and why?
Strangely enough I listen to the Golden Oldies.
My all-time favourite book thus far is “The Fault in
Our Stars” – by John Green
14. If you had to pick only one, would
it be beauty or brains and why?
Definitely
brains, because there is nothing
more rewarding than engaging in an intellectual
conversation with a knowledgeable person. Besides,
I believe that everyone is beautiful in their own way
so beauty comes naturally from within.
15. Anything else you’d like to share
with our readers?
In life your only limitation is yourself. The perfect
recipe for success is perseverance, hard work, selfbelief, a good attitude and a great sense of humour.

current affairs.
1. Why did you enter?
I entered for Miss Commonwealth SA as the pageant offered
one lucky lady the opportunity to address the needs that
we face in society by being given a broader platform to be
an activist of change. Further I saw it as an empowerment
programme that would assist me in growing my networks
with regards to business while assisting and engaging with
the youth which I feel we should all continue to mentor and
invest in.
2. Did you think you would win the title?
It was not easy but I had faith as I worked hard and did what
I had to do to the best of my ability.
3. What are your intentions with the title?
I intend to further reach out to the youth through a mentorship
programme that I started called the BOSS CLUB, which aims
at motivating and inspiring the youth to dream big, focus on
their studies. I am currently inviting relevant individuals that
can help me mentor and assist these young adults. I further
want to also raise funds for HIV/AIDS, Breast Cancer and
Abuse institution through The Buy a Glove Campaign which
will be launched in South Africa soon.
4. Have you won any other titles?
I
won Junior Miss Eastern Cape 2005, Snr Miss Nelson
Mandela Bay 2005, and Miss Walter Sisulu University 2006.
I was First Runner Up in Miss Buffalo City Municipality 2010,
and Second Runner Up in Miss OR Tambo Municipality 2010.
5. What lessons have you learnt from this
journey?
8. How do beauty
contests promote
equality between sexes?
I
reckon it is really about giving
equal opportunities with the
idea of eliminating any form of
discrimination. The common vision
is to raise individuals that can bring
about change and assist in poverty
alleviation, and with general
problems that we are facing. So
with that said, it is an individual that
is able to be the one who makes a
difference.
9. What is the most
important lesson
pageantry and

you?
To
love yourself else and to be
extremely confident as you put
yourself out there to be judged .
Not everyone will like you, so you
need to be strong enough not to
let anyone or anything get you
down.
10. Who or what inspires
you the most and why?
My family, they are my number
It is always very important to be humble, learn from other

which is why I have been able to
achieve what I have. I also have

12. One of the most famous beauty
pageant questions is ‘what’s the
essence of a woman?’ So what
would your answer be?
The essence of a woman is the fact that she
carries the world in her hands: from being a
provider, someone who nurtures, a care giver
and the greatest lover. She never complains
instead she takes all these roles in her stride.
She is beautiful due to her qualities and has the
ability to bring peace and stability in homes and
even nations.
13. If you could invite five people
(dead or alive) to dinner, who
would it be and why would you
choose them?
• My mother, Tembisa Mfeketho as she is the
strongest woman I know
• My dad, Siphiwo Mfeketo as he is one of the
smartest guys living on planet earth, and I thank
him as I have inherited such from him.
• Mam Graca Machel as I would take so much
wisdom from her.
• Basetsane Khumalo, former Miss SA and
respected business woman because she is such
an inspiration from humble beginnings.
• Patrice Motsepe as he remains humble even
though his one of the richest individuals, and I
would secretly hope that his billions will rub off!
14. If you had to pick only one,
would it be beauty or brains and
why?
Definitely
brains as beauty fades away and
brains last a lifetime

Mrs Commonwealth 2015: Marinda Herbst (38), property
portfolio manager (shopping centres)
1. Why did you enter?
I entered because I felt it was something I could
do to boost my own confidence while benefiting
others in the process and I wanted to see how far
I would go.
2. Did you think you would win the
title?
Not at all. I had my top 3 all worked out, and I
8. Who or what inspires you the most and
why?
My children inspire me every day. They love unconditionally
and trust blindly. Faith comes naturally to them. As adults, we
lose these childlike characteristics in our daily struggles and
responsibilities.
9. If you decide to write an autobiography,
what would you entitle it?
wasn’t one of them.
The ripple effect…
3. What was the first thing that
went through your mind when you
heard your name?
10. What would you tell a girl suffering from
low self-esteem?
I was surprised but also instantly humbled and
felt a huge sense of responsibility to use this for
the good of others.
4. What are your intentions with
the title?
I want to use the title as a platform to uplift
others, especially in my hometown and in the
Eastern Cape.
5. Have you won any other titles?
I won a competition when I was in high school
but that was many moons ago.
6. What was the best part of the
journey and the most difficult?
The best part for me was the confidence injection
and the self discovery. This journey helped me to
reconnect with me. I learned things about myself
that had dimmed into obscurity because of all
the other roles that I play as a woman. The most
difficult part of it was that people don’t always
take you seriously and they do not always see the
good intentions or the value that this platform
adds.
7. What is your philosophy in life?
Aristotle
said, “You are what you repeatedly
do.” I therefore try to renew myself, my way of
thinking and my way of doing often. By learning
from others I can endeavour to do better and to
invest in success.
To pick her face up and see that the sun shines on us all. That
she is created in the image of one who believed she was worth
it and that she has a purpose which only she can fulfil.
11. One of the most famous
beauty pageant questions is
‘what’s the essence of a woman?’
So what would your answer be?
13. What is your favourite book?
I have three actually: Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin, and lastly Kronkelpad
by Irma Joubert.
14. How important is it to look your best at all times?
Very important. I must feel comfortable in my skin to know that I am giving the best of myself in any situation - and
it’s one less thing to worry about.
15. Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Life deals us many hands and each hand we are dealt with brings about new opportunities so make the best of each

one. Win or lose, it all contributes to who you are, who you become and how you fulfil your purpose.
I believe the essence of a women is born
from the extremes in her character: both her
strengths and her weaknesses contribute to a
feminine core which radiates love.
12. If you could invite five people
(dead or alive) to dinner, who
would it be and why would you
choose them?
• Marilyn Monroe because she was utterly
perfect in all her imperfections. She was
no cover model but yet commanded the
attention of the world.
• Nelson Mandela because he embodied
selfless love and humanity and the capacity
to forgive.
• Margaret Thatcher because of the impact
she had on the empowerment of women in a
time when it was unheard of.
• Princess Diana because of her own self
esteem issues. I would love to show her what
her legacy looks like and what an impact she
made on others.
• Lastly, I would invite my Dad to show
him who I’m having dinner with. But more
seriously to share with him what my life has
become and to introduce him to my boys. I
think he would be proud.

Ilze Saunders from Klerksdorp was announced Miss Earth South Africa 2014 at an event hosted by Tsogo
Sun at the Palazzo Hotel in Johannesburg, the official home of Miss Earth South Africa. Saunders is 23
years old and a BA Communications graduate who is currently studying further at the University of the
North West. Her excitement and pleasure at the announcement is born from a burning desire to help
people and to make a difference.
The Honourable Minister of Environmental Affairs Ms. Edna Molewa spoke about the importance of
women in the community and their role in environmental advocacy noting that, “this organisation is
nurturing a new generation of environmental activists with a passion for their cause – infused with a sense
of empathy that is indeed rare among the young people of today.”
“By giving hope and inspiring change in others, my life has been enriched. It is an experience that I
will cherish for the rest of my life as it has enabled me to create practical projects, which have improved
the lives of people. To give inspires me,” said Saunders. This young, dynamic woman will represent South
Africa at the international Miss Earth competition to take place on 29 November in the Philippines, South
East Asia.
The 13 finalists are vibrant young women have been very involved in their communities, at schools and
in supporting the organisation’s national campaigns around food security, energy efficiency and greening
programmes. The Runners up are from equally diverse backgrounds, with the first runner up being Steffani
Alexander a 22 year old BCom student that is passionate about people and empowerment through
education. The second runner up is Michillay Brown, who is also 22 years old, and an Environmental
Science and Management student who aims to serve and positively influence the lives of those around
her.
Roxanne Watson, the third runner up, is a 22 year old qualified Nutritionist from the tropical coastal
province of KwaZulu Natal, and is completing her Masters in Consumer Science: Food and Nutrition while
also lecturing.
This year’s programme was hotly contested, with hundreds of entries received earlier in the year; the
organisation took 60 young ladies through to the regional finalist round. Finalists were announced in Cape
Town in August, while celebrating South African women.
As Saunders now prepares for a year of excitement, travel and a very demanding schedule, she will be
working closely with both the Department of Environmental Affairs and Department of Tourism. During
the remainder of Heritage month she takes a strong message against Rhino Poaching with her upcoming
trip to South East Asia, a critical topic on our national agenda as South African’s, especially as we celebrate
Tourism month, Heritage month and International Rhino Day. The newly announced Miss Earth South
Africa will focus on Sustainable and Eco Tourism as a key theme linked to the international event and a
theme that will now be taken forward by the organisation, linking to responsible tourism and sustainability.
SA’s green girl drives away with a Hybrid vehicle compliments of IMPERIAL Toyota for the year of her
reign. She will receive prizes from David Green Eyewear, leading South African designers Werner Dey,
Gerrit Pienaar and Simon Rademan, gifts from Healing Earth, Baobab Oil, Crystal Forum and Jenni Gault.
Her hair treatments and styling will be sponsored by leading Sandton-based salon, Bijan Boutique Hair
and Elchim. This coupled with dental care from Sandton Dental Studio, will ensure that Miss Earth SA
will cater for her smile, with Camelot taking care of all her beauty needs. Earth Pro-Biotics and Carbon
Track will equip her for a greener lifestyle in her day-to-day living, while SWEAT1000 the new exercise
experience that has taken the country by storm, will keep the ambassadors fit and strong to tackle their
exciting journey ahead. Samsonite will ensure that she travels in style both locally and internationally.
Valpre Spring Water will keep her hydrated and on the go, while catering to all her water needs.

Backstage at Mrs Universe with Chané de Kock
A lot can be said about our national titleholders and the impact they are making on the international pageantry
scene. This is certainly true of Mrs South Africa 2013/2014 winner, Chané de Kock, who was recently named Mrs
Perfection at the 2014 Mrs Universe pageant.
MPSAmag caught up with the beauty to find out more about what when on behind the scenes at this year’s contest
that was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 20 – 29 August.
Tell us more about Mrs Universe 2014\
Competing internationally is such an honor for me and it was a wonderful experience!
First of all you have the amazing opportunity to represent your country and show the world what South Africa is
truly about. I am very proud to be called a South African as I believe we are strong people with a wonderful heart of
compassion towards others from all walks of life.
Secondly, I truly enjoyed getting to know people from 39 other countries. One event that particularly stood out for
me was the talent evening. I had to continuously pinch myself as we were watching fellow Mrs. Universe contestants
performing in the small Malaysian theater. Each contestant performed something that represented her country and I
truly enjoyed the time we spent in that theatre.
We had the amazing privilege of experiencing and seeing the very best of Malaysia. I have a lot of respect for and
must give thanks to the previous Mrs. Universe 2013, Carol Lee. She organised the entire event and we were treated
like royalty from the moment we landed until the moment we left.
Is there something that makes the Mrs Universe pageant different from other contest?
The Mrs. Universe pageant is definitely not just about outer beauty, as many people seem to believe. The focus was on
the Forum that took place during the competition and the theme was: One Universe, One Voice against women abuse.
Each contestant had the privilege of presenting a 3-minute presentation that discussed the statistics of women abuse
in your individual country and what you have done to stop it. It was a wonderful inspirational time spent together.
Chané de Kock
By Chantal Riley
What were the other competitors like?
Each and every lady that competed in the Mrs Universe pageant really has a special place in my heart. We had loads
of fun together. The contestants were respectful, friendly and we laughed together a lot. I will always look back at this
time with great memories.
The gala evening was another highlight. The stage was stunning and it was such a privilege to wear my beautiful dress
designed by Anel Botha Couture and Jose De Canha, and to represent my country.
Even though I didn’t walk away with the overall title, I feel very blessed to receive the sash for Mrs. Universe Perfection.
Any tips for those ladies looking to do well at international pageants?
Some practical tips when you compete internationally:
1. Have fun! Try to have a conversation with as many contestants as possible. Even if they don’t understand a word of
English, you can always find a way to make it work.
2. Drink a lot of water!
3. Sleep early, if you can. It’s not called beauty sleep for nothing.
4. Be respectful to everybody and never complain.
5. Always look your best. There is no time to show your second best look, even if you think the other competitors are
also relaxing. It is still a competition.

BEAUTY QUEEN
takes a
$100 000
crown hostage

We all know that the business of
beauty is a serious one but many
of us might not realise just how
significant some contestants
find beauty pageants. You could
say they take it as serious as a
hostage situation…
The Miss Asia Pacific World
pageant is a yearly event
held by a Korean based talent
management
group
known
as Supertalent, who recently
crowned May Myat Noe from
Burma as the Miss Pacific World
reigning queen.
Little did the 18-year old know
that this pageant would gain her
global media attention and not
because of the glitz and glam
of winning the title or being
Myanmar’s first international
beauty queen but because she
allegedly held the $100,000
crown hostage…
According to a statement
released by Miss Asia Pacific
World May was stripped of her
title three months later due to
her “lack of personality, integrity,
lovely character and loyalty to
the organization”. According
to the organisers May has no
respect of the main organisation,
its national director, manager,
media, and fans.
“One of the main reasons for
our decision is because of
her ungrateful attitude and
lack of trustworthiness so the
organisation will not work with
her anymore. Simply, we have
no trust in her and there is no
reason to believe that she can
carry out her duties as Miss Asia
Pacific World 2014 successfully,”
the organisation’s press liaison
Mr David Kim said. “After being
stripped of the title, she has
run off to her home country of
Myanmar with the Miss Asia
Pacific World crown, which is
worth $100,000.”
However, May’s version
of the story differed quite
dramatically.
May recently held a press
conference in the hopes of
clearing her
name. At the
start of the
event she
stated that she
had boarded
a plane for
Myanmar
without
realising that
she had been
dethroned,
which is why
she had the
crown in her
possession.
She further
claimed that
the pageant
organisers
had registered
her age as
18 for the
competition,
even though
they knew she
was born in
1998, which would make her
only 15. After she had won the
title of Miss Asia Pacific World,
the organisers apparently
coaxed her into having “headto-toe” plastic surgery, which
she refused to do. She also
claims that she was coerced
into escorting rich businessmen
on dates whilst in Korea to
“raise funds for the plastic
surgery endeavour”.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
24 • MPSAmag.com October 2014
David admitted that Noe
was told she must undergo
surgery, even claiming forcing
her to do so was the pageant’s
“responsibility.”
“We thought she should be more
beautiful. As soon as she arrived
we sent her to the hospital
to operate on her breasts. If
crown and doesn’t want a tiara
from an organisation with such
a bad reputation. She says
she not only wants a personal
apology but one on behalf of
her country too for the damage
Supertalent has created through
these allegations.
The spokesperson for the
pageant responded by saying
Venezuela
was
apparently
named the runner up of the
talent section before she even
had a chance to compete.
Some of the contestants have
also accused officials of asking
the women for sex in return
for higher placement in the
competition, they also claim
the police who investigated the
matter had been bribed.
MPSAmag’s take on the
situation:
What are the legal
implications?
In most international pageants
the crown is owned by the
pageant organisation, as is the
case with the Miss Asia Pacific
World crown. This means that
May could be held liable for theft.
Holding the crown hostage until
the organisers apologise to her
and her country might be taking
it a tad too far and could have
some serious legal implications
for the stubborn teen. Was it
necessary to drag her country’s
good name into the dispute and
will it cause tension between
South Korea and Myanmar as
some are alleging? We guess
only time will tell.
she doesn’t have a good nose,
then maybe, if she likes, we
can operate on her nose. If it’s
breasts, then it’s breasts,” he
added.
At the press conference the
teenager further stated that she
refused to return the tiara until
she receives an apology from
the organisers. She also says
she is not proud of the $100,000
if they receive an apology from
Noe, they will no longer see the
need to take legal action against
her and that they “may forgive
her”.
This is not the first scandal for
the pageant which only started
in 2010. Allegations about the
pageant being fixed began in
2011, when a young woman
who had been representing
to try and rectify the issues
that they had with her to
come to a mutually beneficial
agreement. May’s alleged ‘lack
of compliance’ could have been
a non-event if there was a proper
legal agreement between the
organisation and the winner,
which outlined the titleholder’s
duties and obligations. While
the agreement would safeguard
the organisation’s interests, the
winner would also be protected
from being coerced into activities
that he/she is not comfortable
with i.e. escorting businessmen
in exchange for sponsorship or
undergoing unwanted plastic
surgery.
How will this end?
While it is clear that neither party
is blameless, pride is now at
stake so it will be interesting to
see who gives and who accepts
an apology. We wouldn’t be
surprised if this matter becomes
a drawn-out, expensive and
media-focused-battle to see
who the rightful custodians of
the crown are.
Who do you think is right
and how would you handle
a situation such as this? Let
us know by mailing us via
[email protected].
Could it have
been handled
differently?
Absolutely. Having looked at
both sides of the story, each
party could have handled the
situation better. There was no
need for a press explosion;
honest and open communication
could have resolved the issues.
The organisation could have
consulted with May personally

Beauty
is
PAIN
PAIN IS
BEAUTY?
Around the world, beauty pageants
are a dime a dozen. There are plenty
of ‘Miss this’ and ‘Mr that’, and of
course the ‘Mrs of wherever’ titles
out there - each with their own
entering criteria and focus areas.
While the standard pageants,
where you basically just need to be
gorgeous and know how to rock a
ramp, are the most common, there
are others that do things a little
differently.
In
today’s beauty industry, looks
are the main attraction without
a doubt, which is why it is quite
refreshing when a pageant makes an
appearance that does not prescribe
that its contestants have to be a
specific shape and size or be a
certain age.
‘Natural’
looks are also not too
important in the case of the Miss
Cosmetic Surgery pageant – a
contest that only has one criteria
to enter – you must have had
plastic surgery in the past and you
must want more. In case you were
wondering, no, the winner is not
really in it for the crown. She is in it
to win a cosmetic surgery splurge to
be enhanced in any way she likes, to
the value of approximately R60 000
at least.
The
judging criteria in the initial
stages of the pageant all depend on
the contestants sharing what they
have had done to transform their
bodies, and why they need further
surgery to enhance the process. The
judges, of which at least one is a
plastic surgeon, would then decide
which contestant would proceed –

based on who is most deserving.
The winner will then get whatever
surgery their R60k (£3,000) prize
will cover, with any additional costs
beyond this amount having to be
covered by themselves. The first
and second “princesses” are also
rewarded with some beauty spoils,
with the first runner up receiving
dermal fillers and the second, a little
Botox.
How is the pageant faring? Not to
great it seems. It was first run in 2011
and received a great deal of criticism
– even being branded as dangerous
and unethical. It was then followed
up the next year for what seems the
final time as no further record of it is
shared post 2012. While the winners
have claimed that the pageant has
drastically changed their lives, it
seems the rest of the world does not
share their sentiments.

would peak your interest enough to
enter an unusual pageant? Email us

A general rule of thumb is to start off with a
really good introduction about yourself with the
judges. This introduction should include your
name, age, where you are from and something
really interesting about yourself. If you prepare
yourself then the interview will be enjoyable and
you will be relaxed.
Pageant
interviews really set the
stage for the best of the best pageant
contestants compared to the run of
the mill, local pageant title seeker.
Many pageant contestants enjoy the
limelight of being on stage, however,
when it comes to impressing a panel
of judges, the strongest of the strong
come out the winners. Having flair
on stage, does not always mean that
you are the best person to win a title
of merit.
Pageant
interviews generally only
take place in more prestigious
pageants, where the winners need to
be ambassadors for their titles. Being
properly prepared for a pageant
interview takes time, dedication and
a lot of practise. Many modelling
schools or pageant coaches do not
spend nearly enough time preparing
their students for pageant interviews
and it is normally these schools that
encourage their students to only
participate in simple one day events
where speaking and communicating
with the judges is not required.
To
build yourself up to winning
a pageant such a Miss South
Africa, requires lots of exposure to
competitions that have interviews as
The idea behind Interviews is for the judges to
get to know the contestant and to find out if
the person sitting in front of them is the correct
person to be the ambassador for the title that they
are competing for. The judges will judge you on:
grooming, openness, sincerity, poise, eye contact,
leadership qualities, attitude towards the pageant
and your fellow contestants, your ability to be
yourself, confidence, attire, manners and posture.
As soon as you enter the interview room, you
need to make an impression in your first 7 seconds.
Everything from your grooming to your poise
and posture will be scrutinised, so expect to be
inspected up close and personal. You also need to
make sure that you avoid certain words or phrases
such as “um” or “like”. Never start a sentence with
the word “well” as it is not considered correct
grammar. Always be concise with your answers
and never apologetic about why you are making

pageants are looking for ambassadors
to go out and use the title to do charity work,
therefore it is important that you involve yourself
actively in charity work prior to participating in
the bigger pageants. Going to one function does
not mean you actively do charity work. Several
involvements with one or various charity events
will enable you to confidently talk about your
charity work, so know what you are involved in, so
that when the judges ask you questions you can
answer them. A contestant recently mentioned
she worked with the SPCA and when asked what
Note to self

the letters SPCA referred to, she could not answer the
judges. For the record the abbreviation is for: Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Remember that the judges see loads of contestants
before you and the impression you make in the few
minutes that you have with them needs to make them
remember you. I always tell contestants that there is
never a wrong answer to an opinionated question.
The manner in which you answer the question will
give you high marks, so if you come out confident,
add a sense of humour to your interview and do not
try and be someone you are not, the likelihood of you
obtaining the high scores you need, will be achieved.
If you see an “interview” as a
“conversation” with the judges, you
will realise that anyone can actually
be part of a competition where
interviews are held and that they
are actually not that bad and can
actually be FUN!

Communication exposure that Worx…
PAGEANTRY CHECK LIST
To avoid pre-competition jitters, you need a pageant check list to ensure everything is ready before the big day. A pageant
tool kit is an absolute must and is something every pageant competitor should have. One important thing to remember is to
keep this kit for pageantry purposes only. Do not be tempted to dig into your pageant kit for a lip gloss or a set of false nails
when you’re at home as you will forget to replace it and come pageant day, you will be sitting without the item you might
need most.
Planning and implementing PR strategies and playing an integral role in clients’ market positioning, are
strengths the agency has developed over the past 12 years.
Importantly, PR Worx is supported by a reputation of quality, innovative ideas and professional expertise.
We offer invaluable experience in media relations, publicity generation, internal communications and
social media strategies to ensure the successful positioning of your company or brand.
Having been independently voted as the city of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and South Africa’s best PR
agency, PR Worx has also claimed the International Association of Business Communicators’ best publicists
in Africa award for three consecutive years.
We received these awards because we regard every client, regardless of size,
as our “big fish” and consequently aim to provide a world class service by
ensuring their expectations are not only met, but mostly exceeded.

Social media update
If you are doing a pageant that requires you to wear multiple outfits, it is a good idea to take along a dress rail as well as a
portable wardrobe. Once you get to the event, you can quickly iron anything that has creased in transit and then hang
everything up neatly. You can also place all your items, including shoes and cosmetics on the various shelves in the portable
wardrobe so that you know where everything is when you have to do quick multiple changes. You can lock up this wardrobe
and know that all your items are safe while you are on the ramp.

In the modelling industry time is money, so when you have five minutes to chat,
you make sure to get the most advice and answers out of a model that you can get.
MPSAmag recently had a quick chat with South African beauty, Colette Cronje from
Outlaw Models.
01.How did you get started in modelling and at what age?
I was scouted in Tygervalley Shopping Centre in Cape Town at age 14.
02.Was your family apprehensive of your decision?
My family has always been very supportive of me, however, they do not support
the degrading side of modelling where girls lose their self-respect.
03.What do agencies look for when adding a model to their books?
Someone beautiful, or edgy and interesting that has a good personality and great
work ethic.
04.What did you do before you started modelling full time?
Part-time sales of artisanal bread at the Neighbour Goods Market, Old Biscuit Mill
in Cape Town.
05.Is modelling a big industry here in South Africa as it is overseas?
South Africa is good for modelling and many overseas clients come over to shoot
here. It is, however, more seasonal than other well known fashion destinations in
the world.
06.Where do most of your bookings come from – locally or globally?
Currently I am based in London and so most of my bookings come from UKbased clients.
07.If internationally, which are your best destinations and why?
I love London. Work is good, rates are good and the city is always buzzing with
energy.
08.Which are your worst destinations and why?
I don’t really have a worst. Every place has its own beauty and character.
09.What advice would you give to girls looking to get into modelling?
Always be true to yourself and do not lower your standards for anyone.

Well, a good
place to do
just that is
to read this
article...
Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Cara Delevingne, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley;
names we all know and adore for their catwalk strut. On paper, the model’s life
is a charmed one. Who wouldn’t want to fly around the world, wear amazing
fashion and be admired for your gorgeous looks?
The
reality is a bit different though. Successful models are among the
hardest working girls on the planet. Don’t believe us? You try pretending it’s
a scorching summer’s day in the middle of July…
There is always someone who wants to be the next Kate or Naomi, but
despite what the movies tell us, becoming a model isn’t just about being tall
and beautiful or simply walking down the street.
It’s about having the uniqueness, talent and drive to back up those looks. But
where do you start?
Well, a good place to do just that is to read this
article...
Know the type of modelling you want to do
The first step in becoming a model is knowing what type of modelling you
want to do. There are quite a few areas to choose from – print focuses on
magazine photo shoots while runway models walk the catwalk for designer
labels. (Check out past issues of MPSAmag for a more comprehensive
breakdown). But remember whatever you end up wanting to try, most female
models start at the very minimum height of 5’7″ (1.74m) but closer to 6’0″
(1.83m) is preferred.
Well, a good
place to do
How to Be ajust that is
Modelto read this
Find the right agency
Now, that you have figured out what type of modelling you want to do, it’s
time to look for an agency that specialises in that specific field of modelling.
Typing “model agency” in Google will deliver thousands of results so narrow
it down by searching for an agency that’s local to your area. It’s important to
remember to research an agency first. Think: what models do they represent?
What type of jobs do they book? Are there complaints online about this
agency?
And remember, if an agency asks for money upfront, you should stay away. So
called “modelling” schools are also suspect too. There are plenty of scammers
out there looking to take advantage of aspiring talent.
Take the right photos
Now you’ll need to get in contact with the agency you wish to approach. Most
agencies have forms online where you can send in your photos and stats.
Stats include your height, measurements and weight. They will also want to
see photos of you. Don’t worry, you do not need to get a professional shoot
done. Simple digital photos are what most agencies require.
Make sure to do a head shot and full-length shot. Wear no makeup and a
simple tank top and pants. Take the photo in natural light so people can see
your features.
Some agencies will also do open calls, where they will see aspiring models
in person. Make sure you bring your printed photos and try present it in a
unique way so that they will remember your face and your photos (and we’re
not talking tips from Aunty Sarah’s scrapbooking class). Put your photos in a
nice binder and go dressed to impress.
Finally, think ahead

If you are lucky enough to get signed, you should also know all the difficulties
that come with the job. Depending on the jobs you book, travelling can take
you away from home a lot. Rejection is also something, especially at the
beginning of the career, you need to get used to.
Even if signed, some models have part-time jobs to ensure a steady income,
which is why we recommend having a backup plan just in case your modelling
career doesn’t pan out.
And even if you do make it big, still have a backup plan - after all you can
only model for so long. Models like Gisele, Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss
have transformed their looks into lucrative careers with their business smarts.
Remember to think ahead, always!

In a recent shoot for Burberry’s brand new My Burberry Fragrance launch – a campaign created as the brand’s signature
scent starring both Delevingne and Moss – the modelling icon joined forces with high fashion’s freshest face for the
first time and the two created fireworks! Delevingne says she was honoured to be afforded the opportunity to work
with one of the most iconic models of the 90s. In an interview with Vogue Magazine, she expressed her excitement on
the whimsical and exhilarating photo shoot with Kate, describing Moss as amazing to work with. “Although I’ve known
her for a while I’ve never seen her at work, she’s truly inspiring and I understand why she is a great icon,” Delevingne
said. “On set she is just amazing and even more magnetic, everybody can’t help but admire her,” she continues.
Moss was just as excited to be working with Delevingne, and described the experience as a remarkable shoot filled
with laughter and fun. Moss told Vogue that she had anticipated the shoot because she knew that they were going to
have a brilliant time and have a real good laugh on set. “It was such a simple and natural shoot, it was just Cara, me
and our trench coats, and it meant we were really able to
just relax and have fun - it was a perfect day!” said Moss.
Modelling may seem a little less graceful today because
of the era in which we are living in but icons such as Gisele
Bündchen , Tyra Banks, Iman and Kate Moss herself are
the little bit of authenticity that the modeling industry can
still gloat about, irrespective of their age. And although we
admire them for having succeeded in maintaining youthful
beauty, we are well aware that they cannot look that way
forever.
The different
AGES
O F M O D EL L IN G
– When 1992 meets 1974
If you want to appreciate the significance of something, take a good look at its history. When some think of the
modelling industry today, they automatically think of it as a multi-billion dollar industry that generates income using
zero sized odd looking women to showcase the hottest runway trends. On a more positive note, many see modelling
as a form of art, one that has been a way of life for many people over the years. Models like Kate Moss are a true
reflection and an epitome of the beauty and significance of modelling and why it is still a successful industry today.
We first witnessed Moss rise to fame in the early 1990s, becoming a part of the heroin chic fashion trend and a muse
for famous high fashion designers all over the world. She also became famous for her waifish figure, and role in size
zero fashion. Today we know Cara Delevingne, a refreshing reminder that the modelling industry does not exist in
vain and that if Kate Moss has left a legacy, it still lives on.
We
describe the industry as “a little less graceful”
because it may have lost its meaning over the years due
to the technological era where programmes such as
Photoshop can make your plain Jane down the road look
something like a super model – there’s always a silver
lining… It’s good to know that somewhere around the
world, modelling agencies always manage to scout young
women like Delevingne who are a constant reminder that
even as a billion dollar industry that is also infamous for
being the height of superficiality and the cause of teenage
inhibitions, that modelling is still an appreciated form of
art. And those who appreciate it should give credit to the
likes of Delevingne, who in turn should give due credit
to the likes of Moss for their inspirational and conscious
efforts to fill the shoes of icons that came before them;
icons that have managed to leave a timeless and unrivalled
standard of true beauty.
Cara is an English high fashion runway model, actress, socialite and singer who began her journey to fame in 2009,
when she signed with Storm Model Management and modelled in Clements Ribeiro and Burberry fashion shows in
2010. In 2011, Delevingne was featured in Burberry’s spring/summer 2011 campaign and later became the face of
Burberry’s spring/summer 2012 campaign, shot by Mario Testino alongside actor Eddie Redmayne. As a young girl,
she modelled for Cadbury chocolate and is currently the face of Burberry’s Beauty campaign alongside fellow British
models Edie Campbell and Jourdan Dunn.
The 22 year old multitalented beauty has been on the scene for just over five years and already the masses have
dubbed her today’s Kate Moss, who is her senior by 18 years. Moss isn’t only famous for rocking runway trends and
making every girl wish that she were a model, she is admired for maintaining her timeless beauty and being the iconic
envy for inheriting genes that make her look half her age.

Declaring gifts for tax purposes can be confusing,
especially considering that interpreting the law can
be subjective. Everybody makes mistakes, no one is
perfect. Little mishaps get shrugged off all the time
unless it’s a suspicious R168 million gift.
In December 2013, SARS found grounds to launch a
tax fraud investigation into local South African model,
Candice van der Merwe. The 21-year-old international
swimsuit model claimed that an unknown Arab
admirer gave her $15.3-million (about R168.3-million)
after she caught his eye at a private Seychelles resort.
“In 2012, I was contracted through Ice Models to
travel to the Seychelles to the Plantation Club on Mahe
Island. The Plantation Club is a private resort in the
Seychelles which is owned and frequented by some
of the richest private individuals in the world,” she
stated in her affidavit. “They include multi-US dollar
billionaires for whom money is no object. This type of
resort is the playground of the super-wealthy where
they can relax in total privacy. It is the norm for lavish
parties and events to be held. Models from only the
trusted agencies are routinely flown in from all over
the world to lend a sense of glamour and exclusivity
to these events.”
“On my first trip to the Seychelles I got on very well
with the persons I met at the private resort. While I
cannot be certain as to the reasons for this, I suspect
that it included the following factors: I have a very
healthy lifestyle and I do not smoke at all or drink
alcohol other than in negligible quantities on social
occasions and I follow a strict exercise regime. I have
also been told that I have a very engaging personality.”
But
SARS doesn’t believe that an “engaging
personality” can land anyone such an extravagant
gift. Authorities have reason to believe that there was
no Arab benefactor and suspect that the gift actually
came from her father. The Western Cape High Court
agrees with SARS that her claims are ‘far-fetched
and implausible’ and subsequently gave the tax man
permission to look into the mysterious “gifts” she
received.

According to various reports, the real target is her
father, Gary van der Merwe who was described in
2004 as “one of the most sought after, high flyer
criminals” in Cape Town. It is alleged that Gary is
known to have dodged approximately R291 million
in taxes over the years. In 2004, when he was
originally arrested, authorities seized R1.2 million in
cash which he was shipping away in a suitcase.
Unfortunately,
this does not end with Candice’s
dad, court documents revealed that $15.3 million
was transferred from the bank Med Sal which is
located in Lebanon to Candice’s local Standard Bank
account. Shortly after that, Candice was contacted
by the V&A waterfront’s dealership, which presented
her with a new Audi R8 Spyder at a cost of R2 million.
She was informed that this too was a gift.
Candice stated that it was during a visit to the
Seychelles that “one of the topics of conversation
which came up” was cars that she liked. She indicated
that her dream car was an Audi R8. Shortly upon her
return to South Africa her car was written off in an
accident and her cellphone damaged. She discussed
the incident with numerous people “including
persons whom I have become friendly with while in
the Seychelles.” A few days later she received two
new cellphones by courier and was contacted by the
V&A Waterfront Audi dealership and presented with
an Audi R8 Spyder which she was informed by the
dealership was registered in her name and had been
purchased for her.
Following
all these extravagant gifts, more was
soon to follow. No sooner had she put the keys in
the R8’s ignition, when she received a Land Rover
Evoque registered in her name valued at around
R660 000. According to the respective heads of the
Cape Town luxury car dealerships, these vehicles
were paid for in cash.
Despite the allegations of tax irregularities, Candice
is not going down without a fight. She has said that
SARS has “devastated” her life.
“I have only just turned 21 years old and work as a
model. Since September last year my life has been
devastated by the draconian actions which SARS has
taken against me. I am now to be subjected to an
inquiry which I read is allegedly costing R135,000 a
day,” Candice was quoted as saying.
It isn’t really fair to say who is right, who is wrong or
what is ‘far-fetched’ as there are always three sides
to a story – yours, theirs and SARS’s.
We’ll keep you posted on the outcome.

MPSAmag Model Attitude Quiz
To be a successful model you need to have the right look, be the right height and have the right frame – and
importantly, have the right attitude. Throwing tantrums, spewing abuse, hurling your cellphone at people’s heads,
kicking and spitting at police officers, and assaulting drivers and cameramen might sound like the model thing to do
(because Naomi does), it is not. Succeeding in the industry takes patience, discipline and self-confidence, which must
also not be mistaken for arrogance. To see if you’re Model Material or the Devil Diva, take our quiz below.
You hear that a model with much Your
less experience was selected for the
job you really wanted. Your reaction
is:
) “There is always more audition
– hopefully I’ll have better luck next
audition.”
) Call your BFF and complain
about the outcome of the audition.
He/she will help you to vent but you
know you will feel better about it
afterwards.
) Tell your group of random social
media friends that the organisation
uses inferior or cheap models and
that they don’t deserve you.
) Create a fake Facebook profile
and post on the MPSAmag page that
the model slept her way into getting
the job.

Your
agency invites you to do a
runway show for your favourite
designer on the same day that you
have committed to a family event.
What do you do?
) Skip this gig. You made prior
commitments and you don’t break a
promise.
) Tell your agent that you’re
available. Your family will understand
if you’re two or three hours late for
the event.
) “This is my modelling career we’re
talking about! Looks will eventually
fade but my family will always be
around and have a hundred other
events.”
) Cancel with your agency the
night before the event and tell
them that you are too ill to make it.
Hopefully they’ll send you get-wellflowers and keep your freebies.
best friend is getting more
modelling jobs than you are. What
do you do?
) Ask him/her what she is doing
to succeed in the industry and if he/
she could help review your look and
offering to help you land more jobs.
) Spend another R20,000 on a new
portfolio, hair, clothes, makeup artist
and round of classes. You and your
family understand that you need to
spend money to make money.
) You don’t have money laying
around so you will ask a friend of a
friend who once did modelling to
point you in the right direction.
) You know that your friend is
the queen of sucking up to agency
owners and designers and that’s
why she keeps getting more jobs
than you. It’s time to find a new best
friend.

the roles for a second.
You’re getting booked for a lot of
great jobs but your friend isn’t. How
do you handle the situation?
) I will tell him/her that it’s not as
much fun without him/her around
and offer my advice to get him/her
back on track. Some tweaking might
just get him/her back on track to do
jobs with me.
) I will remind him/her that you
need to spend money to look the
part. “Time to go and show for a new
look!”
) It’s impossible to do it for
someone else so I’ll tell him/her that
it’s time to pull themselves toward
themselves if they want to make a
success out of modelling.
) Maybe he/she is just not cut out
for modelling and not everyone can
be as successful as I am. Perhaps it’s
time to shop for a new best friend.

about what happened but it might
just save someone else the heart
ache.
) It’s too traumatic to talk about
but I will consider posting an
anonymous tip on the internet to
warn others about it.

feedback as constructive criticism.
You’re adamant that you will work
on everything that was mentioned
and that the next audition will be
yours.

start sending your portfolio to a few

I shouldn’t. I was hired to wear the
outfit so I will do it professionally.

you’re uncomfortable but suggest
that you style the outfit with a

of the ensemble.

calculating your scores,
remember this questionnaire
is purely for fun questionnaire
and should not decide your career
path going forward! There are no
right or wrong answers but you
might just realise that a spoiled
brat attitude is not going to get
you very far in life. Some
of the responses might
seem farfetched
but anyone with
experience in the
industry will tell
you that it’s
closer to the
truth than
you might
think.
Enjoy!
Mostly #A’s: Picture Perfect
Adriana Lima step aside, there is a
new professional in the house! With
your positive attitude, great work
ethic and commitment to being
and giving your best, we doubt
that anyone will have an unkind
word to say about you. Watch out
though that people don’t see your
do-good-ways as a weakness that
can be exploited or taken advantage
of. If you have the right look to
accompany your great attitude, you
will make it far in the industry!
Mostly #B’s: Model Material
It’s natural that someone has an off
day or two. Your behaviour is pretty
much the norm in the modelling
industry. Your great attitude towards
work and not taking yourself too
seriously, will ensure that you are top
of the hiring list. While it’s natural to
blow off steam every now and again,
watch that it doesn’t become a habit
and that you select trustworthy
people to rant to. The industry is
highly competitive so do not give
someone ammo that can be used
against you.
Mostly #C’s: Tyra(nt) Tramps
Bill Gates once said, “I choose a lazy
person to do a hard job because a
lazy person will find an easy way to
do it.” While we’re not saying you’re
lazy, we do know that you will try
and take every shortcut in the book
to get to the top. There is nothing
wrong with being ambitious but be
careful of trampling on others to
get to your goal. Those casualties
you’re leaving in your wake will
not forget too easily so if you hear
the sound of knives sharpening or
whispers behind your back, watch
out, your time at the top might just
be temporary.
Mostly #D’s: Devil Diva
You’re Paris Hilton, right? With your
diva attitude you do not belong in
the modelling industry as nobody
would want to work with you or hire
you – even if you offer your services
for free! We get that modelling is all
about you and not the brands that
you represent, right? Wrong! Take a
step back and ask yourself if you really
want to be in this service industry
being you’re doing a disservice to
everyone around you. With your
bitchy attitude you might just be
meant for something different –
think stage and spotlights… Perhaps
acting or stripping?

The clichéd phrase ‘models can’t act’ has been proved
wrong over the past few years as many models have
demonstrated that they are not just gorgeous to look
at off-screen but also boast serious acting prowess onscreen.
t has been rumoured that many of the female modelsturned-actresses are so good that the established
Bollywood stars feel quite threatened at the prospect of
another model joining the film industry.

owever, many of these models were first questioned
on their foray into Bollywood and their acting skills
(or the lack of them) but today, no Bollywood A-list is
complete without them. The following seven leading
ladies have proved that they can act and, in fact, have a
far better success record than some of their established
counterparts:
1 . A I S H W A RYA R A I B A C H C H A N
Past: Aishwarya Rai won several modelling projects in the 1990’s including one that
brought her straight to the American edition of Vogue. After losing out to Sushmita
Sen in the Femina Miss India beauty pageant, Aishwarya went on to become Miss
World in 1994 and there seemed no stopping thereafter. In 1997, she made her foray
into films, first Mani Ratnam’s Tamil multi-starrer Iruvar and then the Hindi film Aur
Pyaar Ho Gaya opposite Bobby Deol. The latter saw Rai as a sissy spoilt girl and didn’t
appeal to many.
4. KATRINA KAIF
Past: Katrina Kaif had modelled for many brands and fashion houses in many
countries before she came to India when she was offered a role in Londonbased filmmaker Kaizad Gustad’s Boom, which unfortunately bombed out at
the box office. After that, every filmmaker was hesitant to cast Katrina, not just
because her acting skills were not great but also because she hardly knew Hindi.
Turning Point: However, Katrina managed to bag some roles in films like Sarkar,
Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, most of which she got
positive reviews for. But it was really in 2007 that things changed for Kat, when
all the four films she acted in became box office hits. These included Namastey
London, Apne, Partner and Welcome. And as they say, the rest is history.
Present: Today, Katrina has a fairly decent command on the language, has
done everything from desi item numbers, to bubbly and vivacious roles, not to
mention that she has several blockbusters to her credit.
5. CHITRANGDA SINGH
Past: This sultry siren did some advertisements and modelling assignments
before she was spotted for the film Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, in which she
packed a powerful performance. Although none of her films have fared
particularly well at the box office, Chitrangda has held her own in each of them.
Today: Chitrangda Singh is not just known for her arty roles but also for her
mainstream performances.
Turning Point: After some more flops and criticism, came Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum
Dil De Chuke Sanam and Aish won her first Best Actress award, effectively shutting up
all wagging tongues. And since then, there’s been no looking back.
Present: Today, she is not just regarded for her looks and acting, but has also been
credited for bringing India on the international showbiz map to an extent.
2. PRIYANKA CHOPRA
Past: Priyanka entered a few beauty pageants here and there, before her
mother entered her name for the Femina Miss India contest, following which
she went on to become the fifth Indian-origin Miss World winner. This major
win got her film offers and she made her debut in the Tamil film Thamizhan
(2002). However, Chopra’s character was seen as lacking in depth and in fact,
she was written off in Rediff’s review, which claimed she showed ‘no promise’.
Turning Point: In 2003, Priyanka appeared as second female lead in some films
6. DEEPIKA PADUKONE
Past: Deepika Padukone had won several ramp competitions and featured in
advertisements before she bagged a page on the Kingfisher swimsuit calendar.
She got a huge launch in the form of Farah Khan’s film Om Shanti Om opposite
Shah Rukh Khan, for which she won awards and acclaim alike. But her successive
performances in films like Bachna Ae Haseeno and Chandni Chowk To China
failed to impress critics.
Present: Just six years into the industry and Deepikaalready has over 20 roles
to her credit and more to come, each varying from the other.
like The Hero: Love Story of a Spy and Andaaz, which brought her both critical
acclaim and awards along with commercial success. She went on to deliver
several hits like Fashion, Dostana, Kaminey and Agneepath and of course, Barfi.
Present: Today, Priyanka has played (and won awards for) a wily seductress, an
ambitious model, a husband-murdering widow and even an autistic girl.
3. BIPASHA BASU
Past: Bipasha was advised to enter a modelling pageant by Mehr Jessia
Rampal, which she won and eventually led her into modelling assignments
abroad. After doing some famous ads like the controversial one for Calida,
and some famous indie pop songs like Sonu Nigam’s Tuuu, Bipasha made
her debut in the thriller Ajnabee opposite Akshay Kumar. Unlike the others,
Bipasha seemed to fit the bill in the first go when she won the Best Female
Debut award. Bips went to win more critical acclaim for her performances in
Raaz and Jism, both of which were called ‘show-stealers’.
Present: She has and continues to helm several female-centric performances.

50 • MPSAmag.com October 2014
7. ANUSHKA SHARMA
Past: Anushka Sharma walked the ramp for designers
and featured in
advertisements before she was selected for her debut. Like Deepika, Anushka
too, got a huge kick start to her career when she starred opposite SRK in Rab
Ne Bana Di Jodi. She executed her role well and won praise for it but her next
film Badmaash Company didn’t do wonders.
Turning Point: It was Maneesh Sharma’s huge hit Band Baaja Baraat that shot
Anushka into the limelight with her spirited performance in the film, which even
won her some Best Actress awards.
Present: Anushka is one of the most-highly demanded actresses who features
in high profile films.

1: Pound
Co-founders and former drummers
Cristina Peerenboom and Kirsten
Potenza combined their passions for
music and fitness to create Pound,
a full-body cardio workout that
uses lightly weighted “drumsticks”
called Ripstix. Each class combines
Pilates, plyometrics and isometric
movements with constant simulated
drumming to sculpt muscle and torch
up to 900 calories in 45 minutes.
Don’t worry if you don’t have much
rhythm or an ear for music, the
routines are simple to follow and set
to calibrated songs so you will get it
quite easily.
2: Animal Flow
While still a relatively new concept,
Animal Flow training is available
throughout South Africa. Designed
by Mike Fitch, Animal Flow taps
into your primal instincts to get you
moving your body in ways you’ve
never imagined before. The series of
functional bodyweight movements
fuse gymnastics, acrobatics, Parkour,
capoeira, and breakdancing, all while
staying low to the ground (picture a
lioness stalking her prey). Don’t be
fooled into thinking that this is a
playful class, you will be working out
numerous muscles simultaneously
and you’ll be guaranteed a sweatdrenched-workout.
Find it: While Pound is not freely
available at local gyms yet, look for it
on DVD or find information at www.
poundfit.com to do it in the comfort
of your own home.

3: Groove
If you’d love to dance but fear being
mocked for a lack of rhythm or
being unable to copy complicated
movements, fear no more! Groove,
a revolutionary dance workout
designed by Misty Tripoli, combines
powerful music with freestyle
dancing. Instead of imitating a
set choreography, dancers are
encouraged to move freely to their
own beat in whichever format they
feel fit. “Since every body is unique,
there shouldn’t be a one-size-fits
all workout either,” Tripoli says. The
dynamic class still delivers plenty
of cardio—there’s no way you’ll be
standing still—so just get out there
and shake your thing. There is no
“wrong” way in Groove!”
If you’re unable to find a “class” at
your favourite gym, buy a DVD and
Groove away at home!
6: Zumba Step
If you’re already a Zumba
4: Ropes Gone Wild
Swinging a rope around or waving it
up and down might sound simple but
try doing it with the Art of Strength’s
signature weighted ropes. Relying on
the “art of undulation” or creating a
ripple-like wave using your body and
the rope, will ensure that you work
every muscle in your body, especially
your core. You will also benefit from
a cardiovascular workout, improve
coordination and increase metabolic
endurance. A further bonus is that
Ropes Gone Wild is an effective, low
impact workout ideal for newbies,
injured athletes to pro-athletes.
Find
it at select gyms, CrossFit
boxes, and on DVD.

intense cardiovascular and full body
strength exercises every 4 minutes.
The exercises are basic i.e. push-ups,
lunges, and burpees, but will ensure
optimal effort and results. Even
though it sounds easy, this workout
is definitely not for the faint of heart.
fanatic,
Zumba Step is going to take your
cardio workout to the next level.
Combining the Zumba dance-craze
with heart-pumping aerobic-stepcardio, it provides extreme body
sculpting benefits, with a particular
focus on the lower-body. You can
expect amazing results, while feeling
the burn in targeted areas like the
glutes, thighs and legs. It’s literally a
fabulous way to dance your bum into
shape! Zumba Step offers a balance
of traditional fitness (30 percent),
dance (40 percent) and step aerobic
moves (30 percent). With Zumba

and strengthen your legs and glutes
while moving to the addicting

S pring has sprung and this season sees an influx of gym goers who have awakened to start working for
those beach bodies. What would a refreshed workout approach be without the needed gadgets and gizmos
to keep things interesting and aid them in their quest?
W hile fitness fashions may come and go, one gadget that has proven more than useful when exercising
has to be the fitness rate monitor. This fitness accessor y helps to measure anything from your heart rate to
calories burned, steps climbed and distance travelled; giving you great insight into your progress.
T he question remains however, how accurate are these monitors and can we really base our achievements
on the digits that they depict?
F irstly, let’s take a look at how the monitor actually works.
M onitors on the market commonly make use of light to measure your pulse. The device shines a light into
a blood vessel in your wrist, which then detects the changes in blood volume that happens ever y time your
heart pumps blood through your body. There are sensors in the device that pick up how much light your
blood reflects back to the device and this will determine the rate of exercise.

most would only sufficiently
work when you are doing
cardiovascular exercise (such
as running or cycling). Simply
put, strength and muscle
building exercises would not
yield ver y accurate results.
B ut are they accurate?
A s these monitors
need
to shine light into a blood
vessel it would mean that the
monitor would have to be in
the right position all the time
for optimum results. Some of
the wrist straps tend to move
and then the data could be
lost.
W rist
based monitors are
fine for the casual user who
just wants to know what his/
her resting heart rate is, but
none of the manufacturers
claim that these devices are
accurate for extreme athletes,
and that these devices should
not be used for medical
purposes. It might be better to
use a chest strap or the good
old finger to the wrist method
to get an accurate heart rate
count to evaluate your overall
fitness while you are moving.
T hese
monitors appear to
be the most accurate during
moderate-intensity exercise,
with low- and high-intensity
exercise
producing
less
accurate measurements. Most
of the monitors only measure
your heart rate while you are
moving, which means that
W hile
heart rate monitors
could work well to measure,
well, the heart rate, you
should remember that heart
rate isn’t always the best
way to determine energy
expenditure and that some
monitors have a tendency to
overestimate the amount of
calories burned.
To
ensure effectiveness, it is
always advisable to choose
reputable brands that have a
proven track record. Brands
like Polar are definitely worth
a tr y.
A ll
in all the fitness rate
monitor, if used correctly, can
be a great addition to your
workout routine to improve
on
y our
progress and fine tune
each workout session, but
don’t allow it to become the
defining factor in whether you
had a good workout or not.

Eat breakfast
And how is that losing weight
How to
lose weight
unintentionally
The best fashion statement is a fit healthy body. How many times have you seen celebrities have numerous fashion
missteps on the red carpet but still manage to look like a million dollars? SJP could wear a potato sack and make it
look hot! Nobody will dare to forget Halle Berry’s orange bikini in 007, she looked so hot that you could catch a tan
standing next to her! Truth is, it wasn’t the bikini that left the mark, an orange bikini is an orange bikini is an orange
bikini, it’s her devastatingly gorgeous physique that made the statement!
Now that it’s almost summer we all want to look bikini ready but how will we achieve this when we’re so caught up in
2014’s everyday madness? Kickback, relax, grab yourself a drink because MPSAmag has come up with ways in which
you can lose weight -- unintentionally!
Work the staircase!
Headed to work? Before you enter through the doors, be prepared for a good staircase workout. Forget about
those awkward personal-space-infringements in the lifts. Taking the stairs may seem like physique suicide at first but
remember, walking up the stairs builds muscle, which plays an important role in fat loss. The stairs work your quads,
hamstrings, glutes, hip flexors and calves all in one workout. Although stairs only build your leg muscles, you will lose
belly fat efficiently because you’re working some of the largest muscles in your body. And if you want this trick to
work better and show off legs like Heidi Klum’s, do it in heels!
Get your dance on!
Regina is a 24 year old final year Actuarial Science student at the University of Cape Town. Many of her fellow
classmates have dubbed her UCT’s ultimate wet blanket because she often turns down invitations to the weekend
socials as they don’t interest her. Well, just between, you and Regina, she hates attending these socials because she’s
been told that she’s the world’s worst dancer. So to salvage the matter, she has a quick 15 minute dancing session
before she heads off to the socials to prepare her for dance floor moments.
Regina has been doing this for a good three months now and not only has she sharpened her dancing skills, it has
also assisted in building her self-esteem. But what she didn’t realise too is that ever since she’s been doing this, she
has lost 9kgs in three months! Try it out!
Fitness DVDs that incorporate samba, tango, kick-boxing and all other hip dance genres seem exciting when you see
the infomercials on TV because it’s… ON TV! But the reality is that when you’re home alone and you need to get your
fitness grove on, you lose momentum looking at the dance instructor’s impeccably chiselled abs because you know
that looking that way will take forever and a day. These routines may seem exciting but they are routines after all.
unintentionally?
We’re
well
aware that many of you skip
meals because you have a
misconception that not eating
meals will mean that you take
in less calories which means
you will weigh less in the future.
Sorry to burst your health
bubble but skipping breakfast
slows down your metabolism.
Maintaining a good metabolism
is an important part of long term
weight loss. After a night without
eating, your body is in a mild
fasting state, as it would be if no
food was available. If you don’t
eat until lunch time, that can be
up to 18 hours without food.
For the entire morning, instead
of working at peak rates and
burning off more calories, your
body will be trying to conserve
everything it can. Eating a
healthy breakfast will speed up
your metabolism and make it
work harder. So wake up slightly
earlier and fix yourself a full
breakfast with all the nutrition
you need. Remember that people
with speedy metabolisms don’t
pick up weight easily and find it
a lot easier to keep their weight
down. Is that enough motivation
for you? It should be.
Chew your weight off!
Those of you who have an obsession with oral hygiene, mouth washes, mint sprays and constant flossing might not
realise that chewing gum can help you shed some weight.
Research
from the University of Rhode Island
showed that people who chewed gum consumed
68 fewer calories at lunch and did not compensate
by eating later in the day. Chewing gum also
helped the study participants satisfy their cravings
and resist fattening treats. And there’s more: gum
chewers actually burned about 5% more calories
than non-gum chewers. So while you’re sitting
in traffic, get your gums working and pop some
chewing gum while you wait to escape bumper to
bumper madness.
It’s not that we’re saying you should rely solely on
these tricks to get your dream physique, adding
a few simple exercise routines such as power
walking and some spring time yoga can make a
for a kick-ass stress free weight loss routine. And if
dashing up those stairs still feels like a tall order to
you, remember that it was probably part of Halle
Berry’s contract to get that 007 impeccable body.
You have it easy so… get cracking!
Grab your highest pair of heels, wear your best underwear and dance in front of the mirror like you’re shooting a
Beyoncé music video. Time flies when you’re having fun. You’d be surprised how many calories you could burn not
twerking but attempting to do so!

The real reasons why you don’t have six pack abs
Do you struggle in getting your abs into perfect condition? Do you gym, but are never happy
with the end result? Perhaps you’re unintentionally making a few mistakes while exercising that
are keeping your abs at bay.
Mistake 1: Only doing crunches and sit-ups to get a six pack
A six pack will not be achieved when you are doing only traditional ab exercises like crunches
and sit-ups. In fact, by solely focusing on exercises that only target your abs won’t get you the
six pack you want either! Don’t waste your time - you have to get rid of that stubborn layer
of belly fat that’s hiding beneath them. And unfortunately guys, that means you need to take
your diet into account as well.
Mistake 2: Doing isolated exercises
Bicep curls and triceps kick-backs will not get you any significant results either.
These muscle
moves simply don’t stimulate the muscle fibre to build lean muscle or expend enough energy
to maximise the calorie burn. You need to perform exercises that stimulate as many muscles
and expend as much energy as possible to build lean muscle while burning fat so you can get
some serious definition.
Mistake 3: Doing long bouts of cardio
There is a right and a wrong way to do your cardio workouts.
If you have been pounding the
pavement or treadmill with nothing to show for it except the sore joints and a pair of worn
out shoes, you may as well know that it takes a lot of effort and you get very minimal results.
Mistake 4: Working out with machines
A gym and fancy machines may look like high-end, but when it comes to helping you rip your
abs into shape, the only thing they are good for is to sit down while you tie your shoes or when
you want to catch your breath! Machines restrict your range of motion in a workout and they
also limit your ability to fully activate all the muscle fibres you are wanting to target.
Mistake 5: Repeating the same workouts
By repeating your workouts over and over, you are stopping your body from getting results
because your body gets used to what you are doing and so your workout results will plateau.
Your body has an amazing ability to adapt quickly and when it does, that’s when you start to
make progress. You need to switch things up a bit to keep seeing progress.
Mistake 6: Doing long workouts
Faster and better results do not necessarily equal longer, more strenuous workouts. You don’t
need to slave away at the gym, doing the same long workouts every day. Don’t expect different
results when all you’re doing is repeating the same thing for longer periods of time.
Want to get into shape the right way? Then turn over and read through our beginner,
intermediate and advanced guide to getting the six pack of your dreams.

How I got into training
I wanted to start training at the age of
16 as school sports just did not interest
me. My brother-in-law purchased a
gym contract as a Christmas present
as my parents refused to. My dad said
I would only use it for 6 months and
never go again… It is now 14 years
later.
How I got into
In addition, I assist athletes in posing routines for various federations and shows and am also the brand ambassador

and get this delivered to their doorstep.
I am also part of The Mad Scientist team of athletes – a group of selective athletes who include some of the biggest

bodybuilding and fitness
I was in my last year of articles for my
CA qualification, 2008, when I decided
I want to further my fitness career. I
signed up for a course, studied parttime and received my qualification
within six months. This qualification
expanded my knowledge on training
and dieting immensely and I therefore
started training smarter and eating
healthier.
Shortly thereafter, I was approached
by a guy in gym who asked me if I
have ever considered body building.
My immediate response was that I
don’t want to look like a man! Lol! He
then invited me to a show and after
seeing how wrong my perception
was of body building and how good
the girls looked on stage I was
immediately hooked. I wanted to see
what I could do with my body and
how I can improve my own health.
How long I have been
competing and entering
competitions
I entered my first competition, Fame
Fitness, in 2010 and have entered
six other comps after that. My two
last competitions were WBFF South
Africa in July 2013 where I was the
first winner of the diva fitness model
short class division and obtained my
Pro card; and I entered WBFF Worlds
in August 2013.
What are your short

A typical day in my life
A typical day starts with dragging
myself out of bed at 4:45 am and
having my much needed cup of coffee
before heading off to gym.
My training program is divided into
a six-day schedule: two leg days, two
upper body days and two cardio/
instructing days. I train for 60 – 90
minutes per day and believe that this
is sufficient time to obtain a good
quality workout in order to improve
or maintain your physique.
After gym, my work day starts and
this ranges between 8 to 12 hours
a day. Thereafter, it is home time
where dinner, as well as the next day’s
meals are planned. This is the most
important part of the day because if
you fail to plan you plan to fail…
Daily pre-contest
eating plan
•Oats in the morning
•Whey protein shake mid-morning
•Chicken/biltong/tuna
salad
or
chicken fillets/fish with veggies for
lunch (veggies will include sweet
potato for carbs)
•Rice cakes with 2 teaspoons peanut
butter or half cup of raw, unsalted
nuts for mid-afternoon snack
•Chicken/fish/steak with veggies (no
carbs) for dinner
•Pure protein shake before bed time
How often do you have
cheat days and what do
those meals consist of?
When I train for competitions I do not
have cheat meals for 8 weeks before
competition. For the remaining part of
the year I will have one cheat meal a
week which is usually on a Saturday or
Sunday. Cheat meals usually include
pizza, pasta, burgers followed by ice
cream, cake or anything chocolate.
What I do when I am
not training for shows
I am a fitness instructor (as a hobby)
and instruct classes 2 – 3 times a week.
I also recently started entering Warrior
Race and will continue entering
similar competitions in future when
not competing. I still go to gym every
day even when not training for shows
as this is my passion!

Social media plays a very important
role; you need to promote yourself in
order to make an impression.
Once you see results, it will become
an addiction. And I believe that you
have to reward yourself when those
results show or a goal is reached. And
not in the form of food… Buy a new
pair of gym pants or training shoes as
a reward.
Lastly, and most importantly, you need
to stay humble and true to yourself. If
you go into this game with only fame
and fortune in mind, you will fail to
inspire and motivate others.

What in your opinion makes
a successful fitness model?
You have to be in good shape
throughout the year; this is tough,
but more people look up to you than
you realise.
How much mind-power
is required to succeed in
transforming one's body?
Mind-power is the most important
factor in reaching your goals and only
you can control your mind. Coupled
with that, you need the support of
friends and loved-ones as well to keep
your mind positive and motivated.
What motivates you?
I like seeing change. I like seeing
results. It becomes an addiction.
I mostly motivate myself as I have a
passion for the sport, however, I also
keep photos of top fitness models, Jen
Jewell, Andreia Brazier, Bella Falconi,
etc. on my phone and as screen savers
to remind me who I am up against at
Worlds.
If you could change
anything about yourself,
what it would be and why?
I wouldn’t change a thing! I have
teenage skin at the age of 30, I have
short, bulky legs and like every other
girl I have those naughty little dents
on my bum which we all hate. But I
accept my flaws and believe they
make me who I am.

Miss Earth South Africa is proud to announce their endorsement of Baobab Oil, a
product manufactured by EcoProducts, based in Limpopo. The oil is a sought after
botanical oil which is used for its healing properties for the skin and is utilised for
beauty products both locally and internationally.
“This is an exciting project for us, as it speaks to the essence of the Miss Earth South
Africa. The organisation and production of Baobab Oil allows for the empowerment
of the local Venda women in this region, while understanding the conservation and
sustainability issues that the Baobab Tree is aligned to,” says Catherine Constantinides
Executive Director of Miss Earth South Africa.
This production line supports up to 1,500 harvesters and 22 factory workers and
packers. It is a key role player in the upliftment of the local community. EcoProducts
have also implemented a seedling guardian project within local rural communities.
This facilitates the growing and planting of Baobab trees, ensuring their sustainability,
increasing the natural population and promoting the conservation of Baobab trees,
which grow naturally in remote rural Venda. The collection and processing of the
Baobab seeds is done by the local Venda women on a sustainable basis.
Baobab
Oil contains essential fatty acids (EFA’s)
omega 3 and 6, omega 9 as well as the lesser known
omega 7, all of which are excellent for restoring
damaged skin. It also contains vitamins A, D and
anti-oxidant vitamin E. The oil is both enriching yet
also light and is quickly absorbed; it does not clog
pores and functions as a deep skin moisturiser. It has
skin healing properties for skin problems such as
eczema, scarring and stretch marks.
Baobab Oil is a beautiful enriching product, with natural benefits and organically
certified.

just keep them neat and fill them in with a brow pencil or powder. It is however important to note that
if you thin out your eyebrow a little bit you will create more space on your eyelid and it will make the area look bigger.

PINKDRIVE HELPING
SOUTH
AFRICANS
WIN
the good fight against breast cancer
By Thami Mthembu
W
ith October being Breast
Cancer Awareness Month, millions
of South Africans from all walks of
life will participate in events to show
their support and raise awareness of
the disease. This is because, although
people are aware and affected in one
form or another by breast cancer,
many are oblivious to how they can
both prevent and assist in fighting
the disease.
Other prominent forms of cancer
include cervical cancer, which is
the second most common cancer
among South African women, with 1
in every 42 women prone to getting
it*. Having regular pap smears can
detect abnormal cells in the cervix
(mouth of the womb), that could
develop into Cervical Cancer.
[
Breast Cancer is the most common
cancer affecting South African
women and It is reported that 1 in 35
women will be diagnosed with Breast
Cancer*. Although many breast
lumps turn out to be harmless, it is
important for women to do monthly
breast self-examinations and to go
for regular clinical breast checks to
rule out the possibility of developing
breast cancer.
Although a rarer disease for men,
it is still encouraged that men also
do breast self-examinations for early
detection of breast cancer. Less than
1% of all breast cancers occur in men
and in 2014, about 2,360 men are
expected to be diagnosed with the
disease. For men, the lifetime risk of
being diagnosed with breast cancer
is about 1 in 1,000**.

supporting breast cancer awareness
Lucas, the creator of Star Wars
and the Indiana Jones franchises
is reportedly a huge supporter
of breast cancer research. While
it is widely rumoured that he has
received treatment for breast cancer,
it cannot be confirmed.
Tough guy actor Liam Neeson also
lends his voice in support of Breast

who modelled pink handbags for

breast cancer.
You don’t have to be a celebrity to
add your voice of support as there
are many ways you can support
those affected by breast cancer.
You can volunteer to help educate
women about breast cancer, or
partner with a recognised charity
such as PinkDrive, or get involved
with friends and family to start or
join a fundraiser.

there is every chance of defeating it.

impeccable and perky bosom and
we’ve made peace with the fact that
there aren’t exercises that can make
your bust perky because breasts do
not have muscle. And this is why
women today opt to go for breast
implants. Word on the street is that
breast implants are not so pocket
friendly. However, they’re not too
expensive either… It’s tempting if you

be detrimental to your body. So,
what exactly are the health risks
associated with breast implants?

Although the chances
of having complications
are not often likely, it is
important for women to
have knowledge of the
fact that it is possible.
Ursula, a 26 year model
from Port Shepstone was stoked
when she was approached by a
well-known international modelling
agency. After participating in fashion
and modelling shows in and around
Dubai for two years, she decided to
reward herself with breast implants
for her 28th birthday.
If you’re considering breast implants, “I clearly recall the day I decided
you might wonder how to choose

they’re in place. These implants are

and older and to women of any age

human fat. Most women feel that
silicone breast implants look and
feel more like natural like breast
tissue and this is why women opt
for these surgical implants. Silicone
breast implants are available to
women who are 22 years and older
and to women of any age for breast
reconstruction.
The
surgical emplacement of
breast implants, either for breast
reconstruction or for aesthetic
purposes have the same health risks
common to surgery, like an adverse
that I would save up money to get
breast implants. I was at a fitting
room in one of the retail stores in
the city and I hated how many of
the tops I tried on were an ill-fit. I
was excited and nervous at the same
time to go for breast augmentation.
Three days after my birthday, I went
under the knife and got it over and
done with after being reluctant for
a good two weeks. I couldn’t wait
to get home and show off my new
implants to all my friends who envied
me but needless to say, a month
later none of my friends got to see
them. A few weeks after the surgery
I had implant leakage, I spent my
Christmas in hospital, devastated
and upset because I had to have one
of the implants replaced.”
Leaking silicone gel isn’t thought
to cause systemic or long-term
health problems such as breast
cancer, reproductive problems or
connective tissue disease such as
rheumatoid arthritis. Still, a ruptured
silicone breast implant might
eventually cause
breast pain
or changes in
the contour or
shape of the
breast and in
some rare cases,
an infection.
If a leakage
occurs, the
doctor will likely
recommend
surgical
removal.
Complications
to breast augmentation include
breast pain, altered sensation,
impeded breast-feeding function,
visible
wrinkling,
asymmetry,
thinning of the breast tissue, and
symmastia, the “bread loafing” of the
bust that interrupts the natural plane
between the breasts. The reality of
breast augmentation is that even if
your surgeon is known for successful
and reliable surgeries, accidents may
occur.
Ursula spent a
great amount of
money at a wellknown and trusted
surgeon, obviously
not anticipating
something of this
nature.
There are specific treatments for
the complications of indwelling

implants.
Complications
and re-operations related to the

and
to
tissue expanders (implant placeholders during surgery) can also
cause unfavourable scarring in
approximately 6 – 7% of the patients
who have had breast implants.
After
being educated on the
procedure behind breast implants
as well as the health risks, many
women change their minds about
it. What women need to remember
is that just like any other surgical
procedure, breast augmentation
could go wrong. This is not to say
that one shouldn’t think about
undergoing the surgery. However,
it is imperative to bear in mind that
although doctors will do anything
to make sure the procedure is done
to perfection, all surgeries can be a
threat to your physical well-being.

Valentine’s Day and December’s colours would undoubtedly be red, green
and white, which traditionally represent Christmas. While October doesn’t
have a traditional holiday that has been celebrated for centuries to dictate
a preconceived colour, one thing is for sure, this month is undeniably pink.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the global focus
turns pink. Countries, governments, health organisations, companies,
communities, the media, men and women all over the world join hands
for this annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While a lot
of progress has been made and global awareness has been created, we’re
still a long way from remembering that breast cancer does not only affect
its sufferers once a year.
Until we understand that self-breast examinations need to form part of
our monthly routines, breast cancer will remain the most common cancer
affecting 1 in every 35 women in South Africa. While many breast lumps
are considered harmless, they should all be checked as early detection
could save your life.

hat do you feel when you see each colour and can
you think of a brand that makes you feel this way?
O
ne can conclude that colour psychology does seem
like an art – one that stimulates the senses to evoke
emotions and lead to a logical reaction and in the end
– a decision to buy. Is it a form of art that manipulates
or one that stimulates perceptions just right? Are we
being ‘brainwashed’ into buying things we don’t need
or staying loyal to brands who know how control us
through something as simple as colour?
P
erhaps it’s time to start considering how marketing
and branding messages are impacting on our decision
making – you might just be able to conclude how some
brands are subconsciously making up our minds for us.
Let’s break it down:

TSKINNY
anYourself
By Shannon Roscher
The warmer season is here and we all know that it calls for pretty dresses, short shorts, sassy swimwear and
the trendiest vee’s and tee’s!
But there might just be that one thing that could be getting in your way… that transparent, white bod of
yours.
Not to worry ladies and gents, you can now compliment your summer wardrobe with a healthy, streak-free,
golden glow by adding Skinny Tan to your weekly routine. Believe it or not, this is the first self-tanner that
combines a natural tanning ingredient and skin smoothing actives to visibly tan, contour and reduce the
appearance of cellulite – no lies!
Straight from the golden beaches of Australia, Skinny Tan is a salon-quality self-tanner that leaves users with
a natural-looking tan that is lasting, not streaky, smelly or orange! It is the ideal safe alternative for achieving
a healthy, golden glow and toned appearance that lasts for up to seven days.
Skinny Tan was recently put to the test by one of the members of the MPSAmag team who raved about the
product. ”It took my me a day or two to get the courage to apply this yummy smelling self-tanner as I thought
it might end up being a big orange mess! As I poured it into my hand, I loved the amazing coconut smell.
Another bonus was that the Skinny Tan cream is so dark it acts as a bronzer and a guide as to the parts that
I had applied the tan to and the parts that I had missed – resulting in a 100% even, streak-free tan! My legs
were dark by the time I had finished applying the Skinny Tan but I left it on for seven hours and waited as
the label stated. A good few hours later I took off my tights and hopped into the shower and to my surprise
my legs looked amazing! My legs are normally milky-white but Skinny Tan transformed the shade to a Greek
Goddess golden brown! Not a sign of fake tan was left behind as it had developed perfectly evenly. The best
part? My cellulite had miraculously disappeared, vanished, poof, gone! My legs appeared longer, leaner and
best of all orange peel free! I now recommend this product to anyone who wants to listen.”
South African distributor of Skinny Tan, Pierre Malherbe, says the product’s natural active ingredient reacts with
the aminos in the skin and cannot streak. “In fact, 90% of the research volunteers reported that Skinny Tan is
gentle on their skin, less drying, smells better and leaves an even, streak-free colour that is indistinguishable
from a real tan.”
More than 80% of users reported that their skin appeared smoother and that it helped disguise cellulite,
while 86% said their bodies appeared far better-looking. A further 70% even reported that Skinny Tan made
them look thinner.

Something
to keep
in mind when picking
out a watch, however,
is the audience who
will see you wearing
it. Are you trying to

a date, and family
or just need to

while
you’re doing charity
work?
eE
Sometimes
the most complicated
watches have very simple looking
exteriors. Most people would not
appreciate the value of such a watch,
but in a certain crowd it could be
quite the conversation starter.
Whatyourwatchsays

you
brand of watch will be the
right pick for a different personality
type, but you just need to take time
to consider what exactly you need
in a watch. For example, some men
will look best in a Tissot while others
were born to wear a Rolex.
Throughout modern history the
wristwatch has been seen as a
symbol that defines the wearer.
Watches are more than just a
simple way to keep track of the
time of day, they are a statement
that you make to the world about
what sort of person you are.
Since
men do not traditionally
wear as much jewellery as women,
it is especially important to make
sure that the watch you choose
is conveying the right message
about you. When you choose
a watch, you are choosing an
extension of your identity, so it’s
important to carefully consider
which watch will convey your style
and personality best.
From
deciding on the type
of band that best suits your
needs, to the colour of the face,
to whether or not you want to
include precious stones, the
thought that goes into your fine
watch selection should be just
as important as the thought that
goes into any other part of your
wardrobe. You wouldn’t put on
a wrinkled cotton t-shirt to meet
with an important client, so why
wear a watch from a discount
store?

Each
The classic Rolex is a polarising time
piece. Since everyone knows that
Rolex watches can be very expensive,
the fashion statement they give off
comes down to more subtle factors
such as how the man wears and
advertises his watch. A Rolex can be
a very impressive fashion statement
if the man wearing it doesn’t feel
the need to show it off to everyone
that he meets. A strong silent type
will come off as very attractive
with this timepiece on his wrist by
underplaying how much it means to
him. A Rolex, however, can be a bit
of a fashion faux pas if worn with the
attitude that you need to show it off
to anyone you encounter.
In
order to ensure that you are
making the statement of your choice
take some time to consider the
image that you want to cultivate for
yourself. Once you have a solid idea
of who you are and what you stand
for, choose a watch that fits your
persona (and budget) and creates
the right impression.
Factors to consider are:

bold personality might indicate
that you need a unique, cuttingedge watch that will display your
confidence well. Think about who
you are, and let your watch help you
make that statement.
• Your sense of style: Think about
your standard dress. If you’re part of
the suit and tie brigade, you might
need a timepiece with a precious
stone or an understated IWC
Portuguese IW500109 with a black
leather strap and matching face.
You certainly need something more
appropriate than a durable sports
band. If, on the other hand, you run
a diving shop on an island, a luxury
sports watch like a Ulysse Nardin
Maxi Marine Diver’s watch is going
to be more your style.
• Your needs: You must have a

Crocs. Even worse, socks with crocs. We do not even have
words to describe how awful this is and won’t even try to

And the final cherry on top - rugby shorts that are just

PINK
is the new
...for men
s
t
l
u
When it comes to pink, we’ve long been told that it’s a “girly” colour. Maybe marketing is to blame, pushing all the
pink things for baby girls, and Barbie’s and grown up girlie girls. Or maybe women just have a liking to the mix of red
and white. Whichever way you look at it, pink comes off as a feminine hue, the girl’s colour, almost to the point of
becoming synonymous with pretty and delicate.
It is said to
be the colour
of passion...
Why then, is it becoming such a trendy men’s clothing colour?
And we don’t mean not in a subtle ‘I am ashamed to be wearing this and had nothing else to wear’ kind of way, but
in a bold “check me out” display of colour. Pink shirts, pink jackets, pink scarves, pink ties, pink caps, pink shoes and
even the rare pink pants are become a common sighting. A colour formally frowned upon by the man’s man, seems
to be popping up everywhere. Pink when worn right, is seriously sexy!
There is something alluring about pink. Maybe that’s because psychologically it is known to have a calming effect.
Or maybe it’s because pink is complimentary to most skin tones, unless you already have a pink undertone then you
should think of giving it a skip. Or maybe it’s because a man who wears pink exudes confidence, yet is sensitive. It
could be as simple as the fact that pink is easy to coordinate with almost every colour in your wardrobe as it goes
amazingly well with greys, tans, black, navys and other blues tones. And lastly, if you’re still not convinced how great
pink is, women love pink and are more likely to give you a second glance.

recently ran a
poll asking if
men still wear
pink...and the
results may just
surprise you:
Yay Pink
No Way Jose
Here’s what a few respondents had to say about men
and the colour pink:
Team Pink:
• Kimberley May Wilson: “Yes, within reason. Especially
if they have a tan. Because it’s a nice colour. And shows
confidence...”
• Rochelle De Paiva: “Yes, it’s the new black. Very sexy!”
• Morne Marais: “Yes. A good pink shirt looks great
with a dark suit. Focus attention on the guy and shows
that you can be confident with whatever colour you
wear.”
• Pieter Du Plessis: “A real man can wear pink and this
will bring out his caring but confident side. I definitely
agree.”
• Onke Mabude: “Yes, I have a pink shirt and a golf
shirt as well.”
• Johann Els: “Pastel colours are great on sun kissed
bodies, specially on olive toned skin types. Getting
back to pink, not everyone can wear it as it depends
on whether you have blue-, red- or yellow skin tone.
Shades and tones of lilac is creeping in to be the new
pink.”
Team Not So Pink:
76% 24%
_______________________________________________________________________________________

• Colleen Potgieter: “No, my husband just can’t do
it!!!”
• Maddie Viljoen” “Ja, dis bietjie feminine. As dit lig
lig pienk is is dit nog okay. BUT oh no, ons soek mos
manne nie muise nie ;) ”
• Rudolph Dreyer: “Nope, men don’t do pink.”
• Eileen Diamond: “No, it looks way too girly. It is a soft
colour and makes a man look that way, it’s not manly
at all.”
So why not give it a go? Here are four ways you
can try this colour in your everyday wardrobe.
Dress shirts
Pink dress shirts are one of the easiest ways to
incorporate pink into your wardrobe. They are
easily worn with suits, under jerseys or on their
own with trousers or jeans. It’s a winning look.
Jerseys
Looking to be a little more daring, then why
not go for a pink (or if it’ll make you feel better,
salmon) coloured jersey. Pair it with a white shirt
underneath and a pair of fitted black jeans and
you’ll be good to go.
Suits and Trousers
Spring and summer would be the time to wear
pink suits and trousers. I know you may be having
a hard time visualising this, but when I say suits
and trousers I mean light cotton. It’s the perfect
thing to wear at a summer wedding or party but
make sure you mix it up with complimentary
colours so you don’t end up looking like Liberace.
Accessories and
t-shirts
If you can’t commit to a more substantial item in
pink, start small. Ties, t-shirts, hats or a scarf with
pink stripes would be the way to go.
So yes, we can conclusively say, men in pink? It
is the new black!
It is said to be the colour of passion, at least according
to Aerosmith’s song, titled Pink. Steven Tyler even calls
it his favourite colour.

There was something “bru’ing” in Johannesburg recently,
the launch of a new brand which separates the boys from
the men - and the men, well from the real men. Leading
South African beauty chain, Sorbet Group has taken
Johannesburg by its stubble with the official launch of
its all-new and stylish male grooming bar, Sorbet Man,
in Sandton City.
The trendy groomer’s hub is a welcome addition to the
Sorbet stable, with its niche offering of “everything man”.
Their menu offers shaves, haircuts and colour treatments,
facials, waxes as well as a “manly’s” and pedi’s. Also on

whistles with complimentary shots of whisky or espresso,
while they groom - the kind of service excellence that
loyal Sorbet guests have come to expect over the years,
from any of its store nationwide.
“Sorbet Man is the real man’s answer to looking good
and feeling good, without the fuss. It’s a space for men
to be men; to express their individuality and to embrace

its focus on cultivating a sophisticated male
grooming culture amongst men of all ages, the Sorbet

Help! I need to urgently
remove the nail polish off
my toes but I have run out of
nail polish remover and the
shops are closed. Is there
anything else I can use?
Don’t worry! There are quite few household items that
can come to your rescue but see these as emergency
rescue items only.
1. Spray deodorant - many deodorants have
solvents that can be a wonderful remover for
anything that can’t be cleaned very easily, from
nail polish to markers.
• Spray some deodorant from as close to your nails as
you can.
• Rub your nails with a handkerchief or napkin. The nail
polish won’t go away immediately; just persist until your
nails are clean. Repeat step 2 if you need to.
Does drinking hot
drinks on a scorching
summers day really
cool you down?
If you’re among the many millions who prefer
a chilled glass of juice to a hot cup of tea on a
scorching summer’s day, take note: scientists
say a hot drink will cool you down more than
an ice-cold beverage.
So how does it work? Drinking a hot beverage
will raise your core body temperature, which
makes you sweat at an increased rate. And as
it evaporates, the sweat effectively cools you
down. So to answer your question, yes it does
actually cool you down!
So why not give it a try? Instead of reaching for
an ice-cold soft drink or artificially sweetened
juices when you’re feeling hot and bothered,
try a nice cup of hot tea.
2. Top Coat - or any nail polish you have on
hand
• Apply it to your painted nails.
• Quickly get a cotton swab/round and wipe it off. It
should come off.
• Repeat this step if nail polish is stubborn
3. Hair Spray - also contains the same sort of
chemical that gets rid of nail polish.

• Spray as close to the nail as possible
• Don’t leave the hair spray on too long or it will dry on
your nails.
• Rub off as you would with other items.
• Repeat if necessary.
Which is better to use, a
liquid eyeliner or pencil
eyeliner?
It depends on who’s wearing it. Liquid eyeliner
requires a steadier hand. Pencil eyeliner gives a
“smokier effect” and is easier to apply, especially
the gel types.
4. Perfume
• Use old perfume that you don’t have any use for, as you
don’t want to be wasting the Gucci.
• Soak a cotton ball with perfume. You can either spray it
on the cotton ball or dip it in the perfume.
• Rub the perfume soaked cotton ball over your fingernails
and on the polish. The nail polish will lift with ease.
• Repeat until all nails are clean.

Models & Pageantry SA is a pioneering monthly
digital magazine aimed at the diverse modelling,
pageantry, beauty, fashion, fitness and lifestyle
industries, the general public as well as every
young girl that has dreams of becoming the next
Miss South Africa or Miss Universe. Our target
audience varies from the tween market that is
ready to show Honey Boo Boo what pageantry is
really about, to teens aspiring to break into the
modelling industry, to 20 to 40-something year
olds who know what they want from the
fashion, fitness and beauty industries. Our
22,000+ readers are 57% female, 43% male, and
fall within the LSM 6-10+ sectors.
Having recently celebrated its 12th anniversary,
PR Worx has been producing custom
publications for clients in the aviation, lifestyle
and mining sectors for more than a decade.
With blue chip clients in the lifestyle, luxury and
travel and tourism sectors, Models & Pageantry
SA is just a natural evolution of the full service
communication agency’s integrated offering.
The publication is not only aesthetically pleasing,
reflecting all the components of an international
glossy magazine but is also easily searchable,
printable and downloadable in an electronic
format suited to desktops, laptops, tablets and
other mobile devices. It can be read and
downloaded online at www.MPSAmag.com or
read directly and in its entirety on
www.facebook.com/MPSAmag.
This magazine is unlike anything Africa has ever
seen before, offering a fusion of fashion and
fitness advise, genuine and practical “how to”
tips to succeed in modelling or pageantry,
profiles of the hottest models and/or pageant
title holders, and the latest and greatest trends.
Industry experts and contributors are also
invited to use this unique platform to showcase
their expertise through in-depth editorial
content that offers the reader real value.
Further, agencies and training facilities are
invited to submit their social and event images,
inform us of exclusive upcoming events.
Over and above a variety of advertising
opportunities, Models & Pageantry SA also
offers a free directory listing to include any and
all content that is relevant to the industry.
By only producing world-class marketingcommunications strategies and content
specifically produced for relevant target
audiences, PR Worx was independently voted as
the Best Public Relations Company in
Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and South Africa.
Further, the company has also won the IABC
Best Publicists in Africa award for three
consecutive years, and also received an
international gold award for multi-audience
communications.
With our experience and expertise in
communications, advertisers and readers are
assured that the publication will be of a worldclass standard, aimed at addressing your specific
