LITURGY NEWS
News Update: Daily Chapel & Ministry Volunteers Needed
Daily Chapel: Our plans for the transformation of the Daily Chapel are still in the works but
have been delayed until December. Both tapestries of San Lorenzo Ruiz and The Divine
Mercy are in the final stages of being designed and produced by the artist. In the
meantime there is a tapestry of San Lorenzo Ruiz hanging in the chapel. This tapestry,
courtesy of the artist, John Nava, is a representation of how the final art work will look. It is
a beautiful depiction of San Lorenzo Ruiz. We invite everyone to stop into the chapel to
view it and offer a prayer. We look forward to the arrival of the tapestries to complete the
chapel space in December and will keep everyone informed of the dedication to take place
at that time.
Ministry Volunteers GREATLY Needed: We are in GREAT need of volunteers to help in
EVERY ministry at mass. After our talk the weekend of September 13-14th, there were a
few people who came forward to volunteer in a few ministry areas but not nearly enough to
keep us functioning as we should. PLEASE consider coming forward and giving of yourself
through your time and talent. Experience is not necessarily needed and TRAINING will be
provided.
We have a particular need for the following:
♦ Hospitality Ministers – Especially at the 4 pm Saturday; 11:30 am Sunday; 1:30 pm
Sunday Spanish Mass; 4 pm Sunday
Duties - greet people at the door, pass out books, help with the collection, direct
communion procession, hand out bulletins, offer any help to those in need during the
mass, etc.
♦ Eucharistic Ministers – Especially at the 4 pm Saturday; 7:30 am Sunday; 1:30 pm
Sunday Spanish Mass; 4 pm Sunday
Duties – distribute the Body and Blood of Christ to the community during the
Communion time
♦ Mass Coordinators – Especially at the 4 pm Sunday
Duties – make sure the various ministry volunteers are there to fulfill their
responsibilities at mass; fill in/recruit people to help out if needed
♦ Lighting/Sound – All masses, especially the 4 pm Sunday
Duties – coordinate the lighting/sound during the liturgy; work with the music groups
according to their needs
Other Liturgical Ministry Areas to consider:
♦ Table Coordinators (arrange for setting of altar, moving of candles during mass, etc.)
♦ Bread Bakers (bake the bread we use at mass)
♦ Musicians / Singers / Instrumentalists (provide music for liturgies)
♦ Martha & Mary Guild (take care of altar linens)
For information on these ministries and their particular needs, please contact Mary Ryan
or Cathy Bruzzese in the parish office (702) 871-1904 as soon as possible.
Together, we can make it happen! Thank you!

In today’s gospel it says that
“The feast is ready, but those
who were invited were not
worthy to come.” God invites
us to make our Sacrament of
Marriage worthy to come to the
feast. Do we enrich our
marriage to make it what God
wants it to be? The next Worldwide Marriage
Encounter Weekends are November 21-23rd
2014 or February 13-15th and May 1-3rd in 2015
in the Las Vegas area. Early registration is
highly recommended. For more information, call

A Word from Fr. Ray
Una Palabra de P. Ray
It’s that time of year to celebrate the fall season
with our annual “Pumpkin Patch.” We still need
volunteers in every area to put this thing
together. Please contact Beth Thompson if you
would like to help out, even if it’s only for a
couple of hours. Many of the people who man
the booths need breaks, and your participation
as a volunteer would help out immensely
towards this effort.
voluntarios necesitan tomar in descanso, y su
participación como voluntario podría ayudar
enormemente a este esfuerzo.
The Gift shop is still in need of volunteers to
keep the doors open. We are having major
difficulties in getting committed volunteers to help
after the Masses, especially the Sunday Masses.
Chris the King sponsors the gift shop for your
convenience, so please help us out if you would
like to keep the gift shop open in the future. We
simply cannot underwrite a paid person to keep
the shop open. Since we have not been able to
keep a consistent operating schedule, our sales
have dropped and we simply cannot afford to
order more inventory. Please consider helping us
out in this effort so that we can offer our
parishioners this wonderful opportunity to
purchase religious articles and such for their
convenience and edification.
Simplemente no
podemos tener una persona pagada para
mantener la tienda abierta. Puesto que no
hemos sido capaces de mantener un horario
de funcionamiento constante, nuestras ventas
han caído y nosotros simplemente no podemos
darnos el lujo de pedir más inventario. Por
favor considere ayudarnos en este esfuerzo
para que podamos ofrecer a nuestros
feligreses esta maravillosa oportunidad de
comprar artículos religiosos y tal para su
conveniencia y edificación.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE
September 24th – November 2nd
40 Days For Life is an International Prayer
Ministry that began in 2007 in College Station,
Texas dedicated to eradicating, through prayer
and fasting, centers of abortion in our
communities. Since 2007, 539 cities across the
United States and Canada as well as 24 countries
have participated in a 40 Days Campaign praying
at centers of abortion in their respective cities.
Since 2007, nearly 2000 campaigns have been
conducted, with over half a million participants
resulting in the permanent closure of 55 centers
for abortion (one here in Las Vegas). Nearly
9000 children have been saved, many of those
here in Las Vegas.
During 40 Days for Life, the community is asked
to pray and advocate for the unborn in these two
specific ways:
1. Vigil: Prayer and Fasting
2. Community Outreach: Perhaps you know
an unwed mother whom you can journey
beside, or you can contact Living Grace
Homes, an organization that offers a beautiful
residential facility in Las Vegas for soon-to-be
mothers between the ages of 14-22. They
provide safe haven to those who are pregnant
and unwed and without support. Send
donations to: Living Grace Homes, P. O. Box
60416, LV, NV 89160 or call: (702) 212-6472.

Small Church
Communities;
a way of being
church
Small Church
Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who
gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of
the upcoming Sunday and their significance in
their lives. All ministries and organizations
connected to Christ the King are asked to use a
simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read
one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday.
Take a few moments to reflect on one of the
questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray’s
column). Invite individuals to share their
response with the person next to them;
encourage people to share with someone they
do not know well. Before we know it we have
grown closer as a community!

no conocen bien. Antes de darnos cuenta que
hemos crecido más unidos como comunidad!

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY . . . YARN NEEDED
We have a new ministry of caring for those in need of comfort,
peace and spiritual solace especially in times of illness and death
through the creation and presentation of the PRAYER SHAWL.
What is needed is time and a willingness to create these beautiful
shawls through the art of crocheting and/or knitting. We could
also use your leftover yarn. Do you have scraps or skeins of yarn
that you no longer need? Maybe you know someone that no
longer knits or crochets. We could really use that yarn for our
Prayer Shawl Ministry. For anyone who might be interested in
participating in this wonderful act of love, or if you have any yarn
you wish to donate, please call Maureen Morley at (702) 3648411 for further information.
Come and join this most important corporal and spiritual work!

“SPIRITUALITY FOR DAILY LIVING
BASED ON THE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES OF
ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA”
A FIVE WEEK EVENING SERIES
PRESENTED BY FR. MAX OLIVA, S.J.
AT OUR LADY OF LAS VEGAS PARISH
THURSDAYS: OCTOBER 9, 16, 23, 30 &
NOVEMBER 13, 2014
TIME: 6:30 until 8:30 P.M.
COST: Free Will Offering
This evening series will draw on the spirituality of St.
Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus
(Jesuits). His key insight of “finding God in all things”
will be explored by considering the primary sections
of his Spiritual Exercises – a classic retreat manual
that originated from his spiritual experiences. These
‘exercises’ are in the form of meditations and are
biblically based. We will begin the series by learning
who Ignatius was. Some of the meditations covered
are:
The Principle and Foundation of our faith life.
The Call of Christ the King
Two Leaders, Two Standards
Appropriate mysteries from Jesus’ life
In addition, we will consider what is known as
“Discernment of Spirits.” Part of Ignatius’ genius was
the ability to discern between ‘spirits’ – the one
leading us towards God and the one leading us in
the opposite direction.
Ignatius’ spirituality appeals to lay persons as well as
to priests and religious because of his ability to find
God in the ordinary activities of life.
OUR PRESENTER: Max Oliva is a Jesuit priest.
Originally from California he has lived in the Las
Vegas area for three years. He has been a Jesuit
since 1963 and an ordained priest since 1972. He is
a speaker, a retreat presenter, teacher, and
author. He has published five books, three of which
will be available for purchase during the
series.
The series is open to Catholics and non-Catholics, to
all who seek to grow more deeply in their faith.
