1. Objectives and Background of Investigation
◦The existing directory book has indicated limitations in promoting Korean
Cosmetic industry internationally or domestically, failing to offer practical help.
◦For this reason, this investigation is to have a thorough grasp of ranges of
business and current status of investments and technology by cosmetic
companies and to strengthen their industrial competitiveness and to utilize in
promoting them overseas by collecting and offering basic data needed for
promoting transfer of technology with home and abroad institutions.
◦Also, necessity for systematic and detailed data of industrial current status that
can be utilized by companies who are making commitment for the development
of cosmetic industry.

□ Ways to select investigation targets and to promote them were developed through consultation

◦Image Industry
- Cosmetic goods can be set apart from other consumer goods because of its
value generated from how it satisfies consumers’ desires related with the
human aesthetics and body. They tend to be the subject of strong brand
loyalty.
◦High-Value Added Industry
- The cosmetic industry is an advanced industry with a bright future
prospective

it
is
an

technology-intensive industry in the precision chemical field.

- Cosmetic goods are sensitive to market changes, and the public’s preferences
and trends heavily affect their sales; there are many types of the goods

2. Domestic Cosmetic Industry Status
□ Korea’s domestic cosmetic industry has recorded the total production worth KRW3 trillion 980
billion, as compiled by the Korea Cosmetic Association.
◦This figure was the result from a y-o-y growth of 7.8%.

□ High-performance product groups have realized a y-o-y growth of 26% to become the
second largest group in production among cosmetic goods, pushing hair care products, in
2006.
◦Skin care product group remain the largest group in production after recording
a y-o-y growth of 5.6% as its weight in the cosmetic market as a whole stood
at 45%. It was followed by high-performance, hair care, and face makeup
product groups, in the descending order.
◦The kids’ product group realized the biggest y-o-y growth; even though it saw
a negative growth in 2005, its growth bounced back to 53% in 2006. It was
followed by bath, shaving, and eye makeup product groups, in the descending
order.

◦Nevertheless, face makeup, nail care, fragrance, and hair dye product groups
saw a production decrease in comparison to the year 2005.

□ Based on the sales revenue of 52 cosmetic companies registered in the Financial Supervisory
Service (FSS) E-Posting System, Korea’s cosmetic market value was estimated at KRW4
trillion 320.6 billion in 2005.
◦Sales revenue generated by companies listed in KOSPI amounted to KRW2
trillion 329.1 billion to account for 53.9% of the total, and companies listed in
KOSDAQ generated KRW355.2 billion to account for 8.2% of the total. Other
companies generated the sales revenue of KRW1 trillion 636.3 billion, which is

37.9% of the total.
◦There were only 5 companies listed in KOSPI, but their weight in the total
market revenue was recorded at 53.9%.

□ Top cosmetic businesses based on total sales
To examine top 10 cosmetic companies in total sales among listed ones, the
companies from the lst to 3rd were similar with 2004 and TheFaceshop Korea
went up to the 4th place. On the other hand, Koreana Cosmetics declined by
16.44%, ranking the 7th. The growth rate of Johnson & Johnson Korea was the
highest with 18.43% year on year followed by Somang Cosmetics(15.72%) and
Boryung Medience (13.57%).

□ Foreign companies operating in Korea controls 8.5% of the market.
◦5 foreign companies operating in Korea generated the sales revenue of
KRW367.1 billion, to account for 8.5% of the domestic cosmetic market in 2005.
- Sales revenue recorded an annual growth of 1.81% and 2.96% in 2004 and
2005, respectively.

□ Cost to sales ratio saw a small y-o-y decrease to reach 42.8% in 2005.
◦The level of sales & administrative expense ratio was somewhat lowered to
46.7%, and the level of both the operating profit ratio (9.2%) and ordinary profit
ratio (9.3%) was raised from 2004.

◦Business Performance Analysis: Major Cosmetic Companies in Korea (2005)
- Sales revenue realized a y-o-y increase of 7.6%, and the cost-to-sales ratio
saw a slight drop from the previous year to 1.37%.
- The level of sales & administrative expense ratio (sales & administrative
expenses/sales revenue*100) was slightly lowered to 46.7%.
- Operating profit ratio (operating profit/sales revenue*100)increased to 9.2%
following the decrease in sales & administrative expenses.

□ AmorePacific and LG Household & Health Care were two companies that generated the most
sales revenue in the Korean market in 2005. However, sales revenue generated by the No.1
cosmetic company of Korea (AmorePacific: USD1.382 billion in sales revenue) was merely
7.6% of the sales revenue of the No.1 cosmetic company of the world market (Loreal:
USD18.099 billion in sales revenue) in its size.

◦25 (41.6%) and 11 (22.7%) of the 70 companies were from the US and France,
respectively. 11.5%, 11.4%, and 6.2% of the 70 companies were from the UK,
Japan, and Germany, respectively.
◦2 Korean companies were included in the top 70 list. Korea was ranked as No.6
next to Germany in terms of the sales revenue generated by the two companies,
but its weight in the world market was merely 1.5%.

□ Top Cosmetic Companies in the World Market (2005)
◦Lorealhas remained in its No.1 throne, but P&G in the No.2 place outperformed
Loreal in growth rate, 9.2% to 6.5%.
◦AmorePacific and LG Household & Health Care of Korea were ranked as No.22

However, the two companies’ sales revenue combined only size up to the
company in the ranking of No. 18.

3. World Market Status
□ The world’s cosmetic market has recorded a y-o-y growth of 4.7% to reach the total value
of USD269.7 billion in 2006. The growth has slowed down in recent years.

□ The cosmetic market in Europe (Western Europe: USD77.4 billion, Eastern Europe: USD19.3
billion) has the net value of USD96.7 billion to account for 35.9% of the world’s cosmetic
market as a whole. The Asia-Pacific market and the North American market account for
24.1% (USD65 billion) and 30.7% (USD55.7 billion) of the world market, respectively.

□ Korea only accounts for 2.2% of the world’s cosmetic market.
◦Korea’s cosmetic industry has a rather insignificant presence in the world
market.

□ World Market by Product Group (2006)
◦Skin care product group had the most pronounced presence in the cosmetic
market with the MS of 22.3% in 2005. It was followed by hair care product
group (19.6%) and color cosmetic product group (13.2%).
◦Weight of the skin care, perfume, and UV-block product groups have grown all
the while that of the hair care, color cosmetic goods, and bath & shower product
groups have decreased.

amount (sales are classified into direct sales, market sale and sale at department
stores and beauty salons) and the number of employees and researchers
◦Introduction of Company: The representative's greeting or information for the
company's publicity
2. Main Products Information:
◦Classification: Products are indicated by the type of product according to KGMP
(Korea Good Manufacturing Practice) such as liquid, lotion, cream, gel and
aerosol
◦The Name of Technology: The name of technology which has been developed
or are being developed and being sold is indicated in the table.
◦Main Ingredients: If the main ingredients of the product is plant extract, the
product is indicated with the name of food due to the characteristic of cosmetics
◦Applied Field: Effectiveness and use of the products are indicated
◦The Date of Sales: Dates when the products were started to sell
◦Expected Exporting Countries: If there are export plans or if there are countries
to which the company hopes to import

2006 was a difficult year with stagnant customer demand and the polarizing income trend,
accompanied by an unstable economy at home and abroad. Despite such unfavorable
environment, AMOREPACIFIC has forged growth drivers through innovation. As a result, sales rose
by 13.2% to KRW 1,530 billion and operating profit by 4.1% to KRW 22 8 billion, retaining
leading position in Korea.
AMOREPACIFIC enhanced its dominant leadership in the Korean cosmetics market by pursuing
balanced growth between prestige and mass, in order to proactively cope with the bipolarizing
customer trend. Sales of prestige products showed continuous growth in the door-to-door and
department stores channels. Sulwhasoo and Hera, with their innovative product lines and superb
counseling services, were the major contributors.
As for the mass products, sales were strong at Hue Place, The Etude House, and Innisfree Herb
Station, stabilizing amid the rapidly changing business environment. IOPE and Mamonde, with their
high product quality and reasonable prices, satisfied the needs of customers looking for value
consumption.
The personal care business also saw profitability rise despite the toughening competition among
many domestic and international brands. The enhanced brand power and the launching of new
value-added products of Mise en Scene and Happy Bath contributed to the profitable growth
Today, with the vision of becoming the Asian Beauty Creator to redefine and share Asian beauty
with the world, AMOREPACIFIC continues progress into the global market with focus on China,
France, and the United States.
In China, Laneige and Mamonde accelerated their sales in department stores and specialty
stores. In France, Lolita Lempicka solidified its foothold as a global brand with the successful rollout
of its second line, L de Lolita Lempicka.
In June 2006, AMOREPACIFIC transformed into a holding company structure to improve
transparency in corporate governance, to better concentrate the corporate resources on our core
businesses and minimize business risks by decentralized management, thus maximizing
shareholder’s value.
Competition between Korean and foreign peers is expected to intensify in 2007. To stay ahead
in the industry-wide race, AMOREPACIFIC is accelerating customer-centered innovation,
revamping global capabilities, and identifying new growth opportunities to become the world

In 2005, BIENTOT MAMA, dedicated skin medicare products for pregnant
women developed with PHARMASCIENCE, France in 1998, was changed into
Boryung's own product and two new items were launched and 4 types of
PUREGANIC, environment-friendly products which are proper for well-being age.
NUK and DOCTOR ATO MILD SKIN CARE lines were renewed with products
containing liquid mineral filter, safe UV-screening ingredient and non-sensitive
elements to prevent atopy and improved design.
Also, in order to further
strengthen NUK baby feeding products, sponge brushes for milk bottle and teat
and baby spout for first train were launched. Especially, disposable milk bottle
was developed as the disposable teat can be kept in a separate place and it was
applied for patent, improving customers' convenience and quality.

COTDE Inc is dedicated skin and functional cosmetic company, found in 2000 to develop
hi-functional cosmetics based on skin physiological research which is composed with
specialized research team including skin physiologists and dermatologists and researchers from
AMORE PACIFIC research center.
COTDE, referring to cosmoceutical to dermatologists, researches, develops and produces our
products based on more than 10 year-old know how from skin physiologists and research results
and clinical experiences from 30 dermatologists.
COTDE, a manufacturer of effective end products, developed and launched Zymogen Spot
cerum ,whitening cosmetics, which received international patent (WO02055047A1) and the
company was selected as Material & Parts R&D Project in functional material sector that the world
populations need by the Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy for the consecutive
years from 2001 to 2003. In addition, COTDE is actively developing world competitive cosmetic
materials by succeeding in developing a natural preservative utilized Kimchi lactobacillus.
COTDE regards helping customers improve their quality of life as a best value and the
company is being operated based on the belief. To this end, world first and world best products
are being researched and developed in COTDE Bio Research Center, based on skin research

'Beauty' faithfully for 45 years. Only focusing on Cosmetic fields, we have developed the best

"LAPINE" was a first product by Lamy Cosmetics. At that time, Lamy Cosmetics showed
amazing growth rate with 82% in sales while other companies indicated below 50%, surprising
the industry.
Another product that could help the company develop highly was LamiBell for which the
company made serious effort to develop and the product was domestically and internationally
recognized as world class cosmetics by passing the safety test of the US Food & Drug
Administration.
In addition, "vegetable cosmetics" that contain components from vegetables such as cucumber,
dropwort, carrot, tomato and parsley and "Geo Essence Two way" that separate each skin type
for the first time in the nation and favored by solving customers' specific skin trouble were
selected as Hit Product of the year.
Recently, "Geo Sampre C-water", moisturizing product made by Nano-technology, "Sikmulsu
IS", ultra-moisturizing product made from plant extract and "Renoma Bio-plasma", happy energy
cosmetics were developed and favored by numerous customers.

A name conceived from convergence of Aloe, a plant of mysterious properties, and Maiim,

The company owns the patent for stabilization of Vitamin A, C, A+C which are excellent for

Semo Inc has achieved 560 industrial & intellectual property right since its foundation in 1979.
The achievement is a result of Semo's continuous efforts to R&D, as a medium size company, to
survive from fierce competition with overseas companies in open market. Based on this, the
company won a number of prizes in domestic and overseas invention expositions and new
products contests in the 1980s.
With this result, Customer Satisfaction Prize was awarded to Semo as the company has
produced a range of health supplements, cosmetic products, life household products under the
strict production & operation management since its development of Semo squalene in 1987. In
2005, Semo was recognized as a company that applies superior health supplement production
standards by Korea Food & Drug Administration for the first time in the capital areas.

Since our inception in 1992, Somang Cosmetics was able to grow tremendously with the care
of our customers and distinguished quality and marketing strategies of the company.
It was with these two components that Somang Cosmetics was able to produce hit brands from
'Man with Flowers' Skin Shower Cleansing to Color Lotion recently.
With the belief in spreading and practicing the love of Jesus Christ, I personally began helping
and donating to the Siloam Optometry hospital long before Somang Cosmetics opened its doors.
When the company was better stabilized in 1995, 1% of the total sales was donated for the
purpose. In 1999, Somang Cosmetics began donating an additional 1% of the total sales for
humanitarian aid for the hungry children of North Korea. This past year, a donation was given to
the World Vision.
We are endeavoring to fulfill the words in the Bible, which states that "Better is a little with
righteousness than great revenues without right."
The mission of Somang cosmetics is to enhance the beauty of the human race. In order to also
take responsibility for the health of the human race, Somang has taken a step further and entered
into medicine manufacturing as Somang Pharmacy. Through the birth of Somang Life, we hope
to satisfy our customers through adopting the positive aspects of networking sale system.
