Donnay
headed to
state meet
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
It’s all come down to one.
Aaron Donnay will be the
Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester
Prairie wrestling team’s lone
representative at this week’s
state meet in St. Paul after the
senior finished second at 138
pounds in the Section 2AA individual championships on
Saturday in Mankato.
“It feels pretty good,” Donnay said. “I’m the first in my
family to do it, so I’ve got
some bragging rights now.”
Donnay went 3-1 in the
sectional bracket to improve
to 33-5 on the season. He
opened with an 11-0 major
decision against Reid Ayers of
Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-WaldorfPemberton before recording a
7-4 decision against Sage
Loredo-Hollon of St. Peter in
the semifinal.
Donnay lost out on the section championship following
an 8-1 loss to Waconia’s
Justin Schultz in the final.
However, he was able to
avoid a wrestleback on the
strength of the earlier win
over Loredo-Hollon, who
emerged as the third-place
finisher.
The state berth comes one
year after Donnay was sidelined due to knee surgery. He
said that having last year derailed due to injury served to
drive him on the mat in his
senior campaign.
“I’ve been on a mission to
dominate and go to state,” he
said.
Currently sixth in the Class
AA rankings at 138 pounds,
Donnay said he was pleased
with how the state bracket is
laid out. He will take on Jared
Schroepfer of Wabasso/Red
Rock Central in the opening
match, which is scheduled to
take place some time after 9
a.m. Friday morning on the
floor of the Xcel Energy Center.

Glencoe-Silver Lake senior Aaron Donnay qualified
for the State Class AA Wrestling Tournament, to be
held this week in St. Paul, after finishing second at
138 pounds in the Section 2AA meet on Sturday, Feb.
20, at Mankato East High School. Donnay, No. 6 in the
Class AA rankings at 138 pounds, carries a 33-5
record into the state meet. He is the lone member of
the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team
to advance to state and is scheduled to hit the mat at
some point after 9 a.m. Friday morning.
Girls’ cagers net No. 3 seed for 2AA tourney
By Tom Carothers

A pair of wins last week
vaulted the Glencoe-Silver
Lake girls’ basketball team to
a 13-11 overall record and
also the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Section 2AA North
subsectional tournament.
“We definitely needed those
wins last week,” coach Zach
Otto-Fisher said. “They were
important for us to gain some
confidence as well as making
sure we got that third seed.”
The Panthers topped
Mound Westonka 59-45 on
Tuesday, Feb. 16, and then
rolled up a 68-48 win on
Rockford three nights later.
The wins clinched season
sweeps over both teams.
Guard Maddie Monahan led
GSL in scoring in both games,
recording 20 points against
the White Hawks and 18
against the Rockets. Mac
Monahan recorded 12 and 16
points, respectively; fellow
guard Miranda Grack also
topped double digits in both
games, with 15 points against
Mound Westonka and 11 versus Rockford. Guard Molli
Cacka also recorded 11 points
against the Rockets.
The two wins continued
GSL’s 2016 form of coupling
two wins with an equal number of losses. Heading into
this week, the Panthers have
won two games in a row on
four occasions, following up
each of the previous win
streaks with a pair of losses.

of standing water created challenging
conditions for golfers as they made
their way around the “links” of Silver
Lake.
Hockey Day moved to this Saturday
“Hockey Day” in Glencoe
was rescheduled to Saturday,
Feb. 27 at the municipal skating rink due to unseasonably
warm weather last week.
Provided weather cooperates this time, several games,
slated to begin at 1 p.m. will
be held throughout the afternoon. Age groups will be de-
termined by sign-ups.
In addition to games, there
will also be a silent auction
featuring prizes including a
Zach Parise signed cap, a
Mikko Koivu signed photograph and a puck signed by
Nino Neiderreiter. Door
prizes will also be handed
out.
Proceeds will benefit Glencoe Youth Hockey.
Pizza and soda will be provided by Unhinged! Pizza
and RDV Construction.
Those interested in signing
up to play or coach are encouraged to contact Ryan
Voss at 320-510-0404.

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
boys’ basketball team
wrapped up its regular season
schedule with a 68-62 loss at
Mound Westonka on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Individual statistics were
not available.
Also lost on the night were
the services of forward Alex
Romano, who went down
with a dislocated ankle suffered in the contest.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 8-18 overall. GSL
finished sixth in the final
Wright County Conference
West standings with a 5-9
league record.
The Panthers began the
postseason on Tuesday, Feb.

to press. GSL, the No. 5 seed
in the Section 2AA North
subsectional, played at fourth
seeded Jordan in the opening
round.

into a subsectional semifinal
matchup on Friday night at
New Prague. GSL would
face either No. 1 seed Belle
Plaine or No. 8 Tri-City

Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball
head coach Robb DeCorsey is opti-
mistic of the Panthers’ ability to make
a postseason run.
State Continued from page 1B
“Things are set up well in
the bracket for me,” he said.
“There will be some hard
matches, but I’ve already
beaten quite a few of the
guys in my bracket.”
Donnay said that his goal
is to reach the state final and
he believes that goal to be an
attainable one.
“It’s all about having the
right attitude,” he said. “I just
need to focus and get it
done.”
Unfortunately for the Panthers, Donnay will be all
alone in his state quest. After
sending three grapplers to St.
Paul last year, only Donnay
advances this time around.
“I had planned on going
with my teammates,” he said.
“It stinks that some of the
other seniors won’t be there
– it’s a shame they couldn’t
make it, because they tried
their hardest.”
182-pounder Nick Brelje
appeared well on his way to
making a return trip to state
after qualifying for last
year’s tournament. However,
after roaring though his first
two wins via a 5-0 decision
and a fall, Brelje was pinned
in the sectional title match by
Tyler Buesgens of Scott West
and forced into a wrestleback
match against New Prague’s
Cameron Schmitz.
Schmitz defeated Brelje 93 to take second place and
the state berth. Brelje, a senior, saw his career come to a
close with a 29-7 record and
a third-place sectional finish.
GSL/LP wrestlers recorded
a pair of fourth-place finishes, with Alex Mielke accomplishing the feat at 145 and
Tristan Weber at 195.
Both seniors saw their
state hopes come to an end
with losses in their respective
third-place matches, ending
any chance of gaining a
wrestleback for a state berth.
Also placing for GSL/LP
at the sectional meet were:
Dalton Kosek (sixth, 160),
Peyton Sell (sixth, 220) and
Kole Polzin (eighth, 132).

trend this week in its final
two games of the regular
season. The Panthers hosted
New London-Spicer on
Tuesday, after the Chronicle
went to press, and will travel
to Dassel-Cokato for the
regular-season finale on
Thursday night.
“If we can wrap up the
season with four wins, we
could take third place in the
conference,” Otto-Fisher
said. “That would be huge
for us.”
GSL entered this week
with a 7-5 record in the
Wright County Conference
West, while Annandale and
Watertown-Mayer are out of
reach for the top two spots,
New London-Spicer – 9-4
with just Tuesday’s game remaining on its schedule –
can still be caught. The
Wildcats defeated the Panthers 56-49 in Spicer on
Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Wherever the Panthers
`end up in the final WCC
West standings, the team is
optimistic of making a nice
postseason run.

T
his past weekend I went to the CineMagic Century 9 Theater in Hutchinson to see “Risen”. It’s a historical fiction
movie about a high ranking Roman soldier who is sent by Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea, to investigate the case
of the empty tomb of Christ. This soldier, Clavius, is an unbeliever who follows the physical evidence at the empty
tomb and the accounts of eyewitnesses in his search for truth. His orders are to disprove the stories that were circulating that
Jesus had risen and thus to put down any potential trouble to the Empire that may arise. Without giving away too much of the
story line, the movie deals much with how those who encountered the risen Christ were affected in one way or another by Him.
In my opinion, “Risen” is a movie worth seeing whether you’re a believer in Christ or not. The acting is fine, the story is intriguing, and the historical perspective it gives on a crucial time in history is compelling. Personally, as a pastor and as a Christian, I wish some of the parts of the movie would have stuck closer to the Bible and I wish at least some mention would have
been made that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was for the forgiveness of the sins of the world. Nevertheless, I think the movie
does succeed in making one think, ‘How would I have reacted if I were in the place of Clavius? What would I have said, what
would I have done if I had met the resurrected Jesus Christ?’
One of the scenes depicted in the movie that is loosely based on the Bible is that of how the disciple Thomas reacted to the
news that Jesus had risen. The Bible tells us in John chapter 20 that Thomas was not present with the other disciples when
Christ appeared to them on the evening of the resurrection. Thomas refused to believe the others that Jesus had actually risen
until he could see and touch Jesus for himself. One week later, Thomas had that very opportunity and he became convinced.
Jesus then said to Thomas, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have
believed.” The Gospel writer John goes on to say, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are
not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20: 30-31- English Standard Version).
We may not have that opportunity to see Jesus face-to-face right now, but we do have His sure and certain Word, the Bible,
which tells us, “God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have
eternal life” (John 3:16- ESV). Blessed are those who believe this. Forgiveness of sins and eternal life are theirs. Yes, the encounter that we have with the risen Christ in His Word has the power to affect each of us.
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.
