(UTSA) para celebrar la “Década
del Centro” (Decade of Downtown) y el continuo crecimiento
del oeste de San Antonio con
su complejo de departamentos

“El centro de la ciudad está
más radiante que nunca”, afirmó
el alcalde. “Este proyecto significa un incremento de opciones
de vivienda que llenarán un componente clave para la parte de revitalización del centro de nuestro
proyecto SA2020”, añadió.
Al evento asistieron miembros
y líderes de la comunidad que
han estado al tanto del desempeño de este nuevo complejo de
vivienda.
“Es una excelente opción para
todos nuestros estudiantes de
UTSA. Sabemos que será de gran
ayuda para ellos porque estará
cerca del campus del centro de la
universidad”, indicó el Dr. Jesse
Zapata, vice-rector del campus

inicia su construcción, se localiza
en el 1025 de la calle S. Frio, lo
que significa que estará relativamente cerca del campus.

keeps business booming

It takes a lot of work to create
and maintain a business. With the
economic conditions, it’s been
harder and harder for business
owners to keep up while providing
jobs for their employees. Nationally, 7.9 percent of the population
is unemployed.
In Texas, the unemployment rate
is 6.8 percent: a point lower than
the nationwide average. A lot of
this may be due to small businesses
that are good at their expertise,
whose services can compete with
larger companies. A prime example of this is a young entrepreneur
named John Eller. His shop, Leon
Valley Auto Service, has been
around since 2001 and shows no
sign of slowing down anytime
soon. At the young age of 29, he’s John Eller stands beside a vehicle he has just done a paint job on. The 29-year-old entrepreneur
made himself known to many locals has been working with cars since age 18. He believes that with good work, there’s no need to

The leadership at the city’s second oldest Catholic university has
changed and the search will soon
begin for a new president. Dr. Tessa
Martinez Pollack has informed the
school’s trustees she will leave Our
Lady of the Lake University, effective March 1, 2013.
Dr. Pollack has been with OLLU
since 2001 and Board Trustee
Chairman Roy Terracina lauded
the departing university head in a
prepared release.
“Dr. Pollack has helped guide the
university through a time of great
change, and her many contributions
are appreciated by the board and the
university family.”
In her tenure, Dr. Pollack’s
contributions included increasing
the retention and graduation rates.
The main campus now has a new
student academic success center. At
the same time, the university’s has a
new campus in The Woodlands and
school’s Rio Grande Valley location is moving to La Feria which
will result in increased program
offerings and enrollment growth.
More recently, there have been a
number of initiatives, including the
“High Achievement through Leadership Opportunities” (HALO), as
well as the new quality enhancement plan “QuEST” that builds on
students’ abilities in mathematics
and English and a partnership with
DELTAK to expand national prospects in online learning.
The newly renovated Main
Building has won an Honor Award
from the National Trust for Historic
Preservation; and enhancements to
the 24th Street corridor have made
the campus safer, more unified, and
more attractive.
Terracina added, “OLLU is a
unique institution in many ways,
and we will now begin a search for
a new president who can step in and
help the University move forward
in this ever-changing and challenging environment. The presidential
search will begin shortly and, while
we want to move quickly, there is
no specific timetable at this time for
a decision to be made.”
Low impact design
makes financial and
environmental sense

San Antonio Land/Water Sustainability Forum and The San
Antonio River Authority (SARA)
kicked off a low impact development contest on Feb. 6 at the
American Institute of Architects
(AIA) at The Pearl.
Low Impact Development (LID)
was established in the 90s and has
since spread gradually from city to
city. LID uses “green infrastructures” to mimic natural processes
and return water to the atmosphere
either through evaporation or with
the help of plants. It can also be
used to reuse runoff water created
by floods and storms.
“Low impact development really has opportunities to make
our quality of life better for the
community and the constituency,”
Stephen Graham with the San Antonio River Authority said.
SARA is at the forefront of
proving to designers and architects
that LID is more cost effective
and successful than traditional
methods.
LID does not mean increased
cost; it’s quite the opposite in
fact. Besides construction, simple
tweaks can be used to control
runoff water on streets and around
houses.
LID ultimately benefits ground
water quality as well as quantity
and it increases property ascetics
and value.
Some of the benefits of LID are
once it’s in place it can keep toxins from floods so that they don’t
reach water supplies. Methods
that had been previously used to
strictly cut back on pollution are
now being used to create new
projects for LID designs.
“Initially we’re targeting the
private developer community
and their engineers, architects,
and landscape architects,” Steven
Graham stated.
Contestants in the competition
are being challenged to use LID
designs to show that those methods
can save money while also making
properties look nicer. The Teams
will compete to create LID designs for three properties in town
at Evers Road, Leon Valley and
Hemisfair.
Once the proof is out that LID
design is superior in all ways, it
will be easier to get more funding
or more similar designs in our city.

Cómo proteger a un criminal
Monseñor Peter García era un
criminal. Documentos internos de
la iglesia han revelado que el sacer
dote abusó sexualmente de una
veintena de niños y adolescentes
entre 1966 y 1984.
Los documentos también
muestran que su superior, Roger
Mahony, el ex arzobispo de Los
Ángeles, sabía de los abusos, pero
nunca reportó los crímenes de García a la policía. Nunca. Y ya es muy
tarde para hacer algo al respecto.
García murió en el 2009.
Esta es la historia de cómo la
Iglesia católica en Los Ángeles protegió a varios sacerdotes
criminales durante años y, lejos
de denunciarlos a la policía, hizo

to pray for everyone who has

How best to get from A to B and back
People across Texas are speculating on what issues will be at the
forefront of conversations amongst
state lawmakers over the next few
months. While several issues are undoubtedly guaranteed to take center
stage in our legislative arena, there
are few that incite passion within

in Texas, and particularly in San
Antonio and is an area that certainly
needs attention.
As the former Chairman of the
San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization
Transportation Policy Board (MPO
TPB), I have witnessed firsthand
some of the underlying issues that
plague how our state and community provides infrastructure,
one of the most basic functions of
government.
About a decade ago, the Texas
Department of Transportation (TxDOT) identified a funding shortfall
and was instructed by the state legislature to provide alternative funding
mechanisms for future construction
and maintenance of state highways.
On December 18, 2003, the Texas
Transportation Commission passed
a minute order indicating that all
future capacity added to state maintained roads would be tolled, if
proven viable. In order to alleviate
congestion on US 281, TxDOT in-
wounds that were caused, has
been the saddest of experiences.
As a result of church’s action
Gomez relieved his predecessor, Cardinal Roger Mahony, of

Curry, Mahony’s former righthand man, asked that he be

in your healing. I am profoundly sorry for these sins against
you,” Gomez said.
However, this is not the end
of the matter. Gomez said that
in the weeks ahead, he would
address all of these matters in
greater detail and today was a
time for prayer and reflection
and deep compassion for the
victims of child sexual abuse.
In taking this action, many
would hope that other higherups in the church would follow that lead, come forth and
remove the ugliness that hangs
on the church because the allegations of sexually abused
children.

2013 Lexus GS 450h: impressing
its consumers since 1989

The Lexus family of automotive products has been
impressing consumers since
1989, and the 2013 GS 450h is
no exception. Keep in mind this
beauty of the road is a hybrid
that does not bring with it, some
of the hang ups that are associated with hybrids such as low
performance and high maintenance. Were it not for the H at
the end of its name, you would
never know this GS was not a
totally gas powered vehicle.
The GS 450h manages to
show you how technology can
make a luxury vehicle get decent fuel economy while also
turning in an impressive driving
performance. In addition if you
are a high tech nut like I am,
luxury cars are generally the
best place to turn when you’re
looking to get your hands on
the latest in in-car technology.
This hybrid features a huge
12.5-inch display, with multiple
drive modes and smart phone
connectivity, complete with its
own app suite.
Of course the GS 450h is
at the top of Lexus’ GS line.
With 338 horsepower, and 254
lb-ft of torque, you have some
“knock your head back” acceleration. Lexus put into the
GS 450h a 3.5-liter V-6 engine
and combined it with a 1.9-kWh
nickel-metal hybrid battery and
electric motor. The two power
sources work together to give
you a sedan that has performance and yet sips gas. In case
you like choices, there are four
drive modes available in the
GS 450h. How many hybrids
do you know that can take you
from 0-60 MPH in 5.6 seconds?
Changing driving modes is
as simple as twisting the Drive
Mode Select knob situated in
the center console behind the
gear selector. Turn the selector
to the left and you’ll put the GS
into Eco mode, reducing throttle response and power output.
In Eco mode a backlight in the
GS’s instrument cluster will
turn a light blue and a Hybrid
System Indicator will provide
you with constant information
on how much battery power you
are using versus engine power
and when the battery pack is
charging. Push down on the
Drive Mode Select knob and
the GS will enter Normal mode.
However, if you want some
serious fun, twist the Drive
Mode Select to the right and
set the GS to Sport and Sport+
modes. Engine performance
changes to provide you with
a more spirited drive, and the
Sport+ mode will firm up the
suspension. Of course, you did
buy a hybrid, so if you’re more
interested in saving gas, you
can press the EV Mode button
next to the Drive Mode Select.
In this mode, the GS will run
exclusively on battery power
making you sound as silent as
a golf cart, without giving up
too much power.

more times. But I do have to admit, this GS model is not going
to come cheap, with the price
tag hovering around $60,000.
But then when you arrived at
the Lexus dealership, you were
not here looking for a bargain, a
wholesale relic, no sir you were
here because you are used to the
best and you know like I do that
Lexus is ready to deliver that
and more.

Lo básico del fondo de
emergencia

Tenemos que ahorrar para lo
inesperado.
Mi abuelito siempre dijo que va
a llover, hay que estar listo.
Tienes que ahorrar para cuando
llueva. Prepárense.
La revista Money nos dice
que el 78 por ciento de ustedes
van a tener un grave problema
financiero cada 10 años. Eso significa que si no le ha pasado algo
en los últimos 8 años, prepárese
que ya les toca. Algo va pasar, la
transmisión va a patinar, se va a
enfermar un niño y hay que correr
a la sala de emergencias.
Las estadísticas dicen que el
32 por ciento de la población
no pueden cubrir una emergencia de $5,000. ¡Piénsenlo! Si
usted está vivo las emergencias
van a suceder. Usted no es la
excepción. Le va a suceder algo
y la mejor manera de protegerse
de las patadas que da la vida es
con lo que nosotros los hispanos
llamamos el colchón financiero.
Yo recomiendo que para iniciar
junte un mini-fondo de emergencias de $1,000 lo más antes
posible.
Este colchoncito lo va a proteger del 90 por ciento de las
patadas que da la vida.
Así, la próxima vez que se
descomponga el carro y tienes
por lo menos $1,000 esto no se
convertirá en una tragedia.
En mi casa, cuando no teníamos el fondo de emergencia
y se descomponía el carro, se
convertía en un problema de
transporte, un problema de dinero
y un problema de matrimonio.
Ya que lo tengan ¡No lo toquen!
Este no es un fondo para los rines
de la troca ni para una plasma
nueva es exclusivamente para
las emergencias.
Cuando uno logra tener este
fondo de emergencia, te relajas,
te da una sensación de paz. Una
sensación de control sobre tu
dinero.
Las emergencias se convierten
en inconveniencias en vez de
crisis.
Lo raro de todo esto es que
cuando por fin acumulas tu cuenta
de emergencias te dejan de suceder las emergencias. Esto es
un gran paso emocional. No se
les olvide.

Guide Dogs of Texas seeks volunteer puppys

In order to continue providing
quality guide dogs to Texans who
are visually impaired, Guide Dogs
of Texas (GDTX) is calling on
area dog lovers to volunteer as
puppy raisers and brood holders.
A brood holder provides a
permanent home for one of the
female dogs in the breeding
program. Holders are essential to
the program in providing the next
generation of guide dog puppies
for GDTX. They also provide a
safe and loving environment in
which new litters can be born and
cared for up to eight weeks. After
that, the pups are then cared for
by volunteer puppy raisers, thus
starting the next stage of their
training.
Puppy raisers take puppies into
their homes from the time they are
eight weeks to about 18 months
old. Puppy managers from GDTX
will provide training and meet
with puppy raisers regularly to
provide guidance and feedback.
Volunteers also teach basic commands, obedience, and acclimate
the puppy to different environments such as stores, restaurants
and workplaces. Volunteers must
be at least 18 years old, live within
a two-hour radius of San Antonio,
and be available to be with the dog
for the majority of the day.

“what causes cancer”

In a world full of chemicals
and radiation, it’s easy to perceive - aided and abetted by the
Internet - carcinogens everywhere; in the air we breathe, in
the phones we use, in the energy
drinks we quaff.
What’s true and what we can
do will be the themes of a free
lecture Thursday night at the
Cancer Therapy & Research
Center at the UT Health Science
Center.
The persistent rumor linking
cell phones to brain tumors got
a slight boost in 2011 when the
World Health Organization’s
International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that
there was limited evidence of a
link and recommended further
research.
But nothing definitive has been
announced since.
If people want to manage their
cancer risk, they’re better off
focusing on what we know for
certain, said Andrew Brenner,
M.D., Ph.D., a neuro-oncologist
at the CTRC and one of two
speakers at next week’s lecture.
“By all accounts to date cell
phones seem to be safe,” Dr.
Brenner said. “There are other
things to pay attention to. Things
within our control, like not smoking and maintaining a healthy
diet and exercise, will do more
to reduce our cancer risks.”
Daniel DeArmond, M.D., a
UT Medicine cardiothoracic
surgeon, will talk about environmental risks associated with
lung cancer.
The jury is still out on some
things, Dr. DeArmond said, but
the evidence just keeps mounting
against smoking and exposure to
secondhand smoke.
“Anything we can do to hammer smoking is a good thing,”
he said.

Social Security checks
to be extinct by March

For the more than 5 million
consumers who still collect
their Social Security by check,
February is a crucial month for
them. In order to save tax payers $1 billion over 10 years and
mitigate Social Security fraud,
the government has informed
these participants that they need
to sign up for direct deposit or
the Direct Express debit card by
March 1, 2013. The only participants exempt are those who were
born on or before May, 1921.
Although it’s hard for many
people to change their ways, it’s
important for them to know there
are benefits by choosing either
direct deposit or the government

Hace unos días tuve una
experiencia única. Mi novio
se tomó dos copas de vino en
mi casa, y justo antes de salir
a su casa, me dijo que quería
descansar un poco, a lo que
yo le contesté: “Creo que es
hora de que te vayas, es mejor
ahorita porque más tarde te dará
sueño”.
Se fue molesto, y conocién
dolo al grado que pareciera
que le leo la mente, me supuse
que en su camino al estacionamiento iba a decirse a sí mismo:
“Ojalá me pase algo para que se
sienta culpable”.
Y así fue.
Minutos después de haber
salido me llama diciéndome
que había sido esposado y que
por desgracia había recibido
una multa que ni quería voltear
a ver.
Ahí comenzó nuestro proble
ma, pues no dejaba de culparme
y decirme que si se hubiera
quedado un rato más en mi casa,
nada de esto hubiera pasado.
Por supuesto me sentí mal por
su multa, sin embargo jamás me
sentí culpable.
A diario pasamos por situaciones en las que hacemos
algo mal y no encontramos la
manera de remediarlas. Nuestro
único confort es echarle la

tus problemas.
A cada acción corresponde

Mexico on the rise: economic
good news

As 2013 unfolds, Mexico has
shown positive economic, as
well as political, signs. The new
president, Enrique Peña Nieto, is
off to an encouraging start and
there have been some notable
legislative achievements in the
last five months. Those successes
dovetail nicely with positive
signs in the Mexican economy.
Key macroeconomic indicators have remained stable for the
last 15 years, demonstrating the
country’s resilience even in the
face of a global recession. Inflation has been kept under control,
especially when juxtaposed with
the hyperinflation of the 80s and
mid-90s. The federal deficit has
not exceeded 3.2% of GDP for
nearly 20 years, and the budget
for fiscal year 2012 predicted
a deficit of less than 1%. By
contrast, the last time the US
federal deficit was below 4%
of GDP was in fiscal year 2008.
Since then, the US has recorded
deficits above 8% of GDP, more
than double the average during
fiscal years 2002-2008 when it
ranged from 1.1% to 3.5% of
GDP. Admittedly, the higher
price of some staples like rice,
maize, and beans is worrisome,
and this also brings to mind the
fact that around half of Mexico’s
citizens are considered poor
($167, per month according to
government estimates. According to the Secretariat of Social
Development (SEDESOL), 13
million lived in extreme poverty
in 2012. Yet, there are positive
trends too.
Mexico’s exports to the United
States already totaled $263 billion in 2011 and it is positioned
to increase this number, especially as China’s global competitiveness declines due to rising
labor costs and higher oil prices
that affect transportation costs.
According to some sources, since
2000 the average manufacturing
wage has more than quadrupled
in China, and though it is still
less than Mexico’s, the latter’s
proximity to the United States
is an important advantage for
smaller firms or those that appreciate shorter, less uncertain
supply chains. It bears noting that
the People’s Republic of China’s
admission to the World Trade
Organization in 2001 is one
reason why Mexico has not benefited more from NAFTA over
the last decade. Now changes
are afoot, as recognized by Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz.
At January’s World Economic
Forum held in Switzerland, he
was quoted as saying that “[a]
lot of sources are saying Mexico
is more competitive than China,
I believe it.”
Car manufacturers like Audi,
Nissan, Honda, and Mazda are
already planning to expand
production in Mexico, in part
because of its proximity to the
world’s second largest car market (the United States was overtaken by China in 2010). Also,
Mexico’s exports of consumer
electronics to the US grew to
$71 billion back in 2010, and
it has the world’s sixth largest
electronic industry. Regrettably,
these are developments that do
not tend to be reported in US
news. The American public, with
the notable exception of those
who get their news from Spanish
language media, generally heard
relatively little about last year’s
presidential election in Mexico,
whereas political developments
in Syria, China’s transition of
power, and even Greece’s parliamentary elections got more
coverage. While this irony may
be understandable, there are
plenty of positive developments
in Mexico that do merit greater
attention. One of these, as hinted
at above, is how the new president has achieved some notable
successes on the legislative front.

signs, and ongoing plans to
tackle longstanding hot-button
issues, are the topic of next
week’s article.

Miss San Antonio 2011 Rosa Parks sat down for all of us
and Media Law: 3 of 3

“In all its specific forms, as
information or propaganda, as advertisement or direct entertainment
consumption, the spectacle is the
present model of socially dominant
life,” wrote Guy Debord in Society
of the Spectacle.
Some critics will call for attorneys to frame their clients’ stories
in the least spectacular form possible, apparently holding to the
belief that the facts should speak for
themselves and that justice is best
achieved where one refrains from
dressing them up. Unfortunately,
critics such as these prove to be
naïve. They fail to grasp the inherently narrative structure of legal
representation.
The word “representation” itself
refers to a process of revision. The
opposing parties at trial are not
simply juxtaposing one set of facts
against another in anticipation that
the truth will prevail of its own
accord. They are reconstructing
the truth as they tell their clients’
stories.
The facts must be organized into
a legally cognizable narrative as a
preliminary matter. Secondarily,
and perhaps most importantly, they
must be stylized so as to be persuasive to the court or the jury. Therefore, there are at least two distinct
stages where lawyers will dress up
the facts to suit their purposes.
Should they fail to perform
their narrative functions skillfully
at either stage, they will be doing
their clients a disservice. This is
particularly true of a high profile
or notorious case, one which has
attracted the attention of the mass
media, since the layers of storytelling will grow increasingly complex
as the mass media enter the fray.
Lawyers must take into account the
potential impact of these extrinsic
narratives on their cases if they wish
provide effective representation.
In the case of Domonique
Ramirez (Miss San Antonio 2011),
her attorney used the sloppy public
statements of her opponents against
them. Mr. Vera took an off-thecuff remark, “Get off the tacos,”
and wove a compelling narrative
of gender, race and class-based
discrimination around it.
His strategy proved successful.
His client regained her crown and,
in the process, she enjoyed the
overwhelmingly sympathetic attention of local, national and even
international media.
It is rare for a civil suit at a state’s
lower-court level to garnish as
much publicity as this one. Usually
the spotlight shines on notorious
criminal cases. Why did the nonlocal media become so interested
in Domonique Ramirez’s breach of
contract suit against the Miss Bexar
County Organization?
Ostensibly, her case merited
widespread attention because of
the social and moral implications
of demanding a thinner-than-thin
body of an already petite teenage
beauty queen. As the story goes, her
case stands for the principle that our
society has become obsessed with
unnatural standards of beauty that
are pushing women and young girls
into unhealthy lifestyles epitomized
by the illnesses of anorexia and
bulimia.
One cannot deny that there is
some merit to these claims. The
vindication of the rights of women
is not totally foreign to this case.
On the other hand, major television networks do not, as a matter
of habit, donate costly broadcasting
time to righteous causes for their
own sake. Instead, they produce
entertainment, however informative, thriving on the investments of
advertisers drawn to programs with
large followings.
It is, after all, ironic that the
media would critique in their news
programs the very image of female
beauty that they project to the public on a daily basis in their dramatic
programs and advertisements:
thin figure, perfect skin, delicate
features, radiant hair, manicured
nails—essentially a talking mannequin clothed in fashionable garb.
How does one explain the double
standard? Television must satisfy
the libidinous fantasies of its viewers, allowing them to indulge vicariously in the heights of sensuality,
while simultaneously allowing an
escape valve for the sentiments of
inferiority, frustration, and rage that
arise in these same viewers who
realize just how far they and their
lives differ from the ideal.
Cultural critic Jean Baudrillard
has compared television studios to
nuclear power plants, since both
manage to generate spectacularly
powerful outputs while carefully
hiding from view their core reactors. They flirt with catastrophe,
while diligently preventing a systemic meltdown through ingeniously designed cooling mechanisms.
“TV itself is also a process of
chain reaction, but implosive: it
cools and neutralizes the meaning
and the energy of events.” Television projects a revision of history
into one’s living room and allows
one to partake of simulated dangers
without any of the risks involved in
assuming historical agency.
Like the control mechanisms of
a nuclear power plant, television
operates as a “system of deterrence,” cooling the impetus for
explosion—or if one prefers, social
revolution. Its power resides in its
ability to generate enormous sums
of information while effectively
concealing the truth: “Of the reactor, in principle the veritable heart
of the matter, we will know nothing; it like the real, has vanished and
become illegible.”
What happens, then, to the concept of legal truth when cases are
tried in the media as much as they
are in the courtroom? The U.S.
Supreme Court has grappled with
this question on at least two occasions and has come to drastically
different conclusions.
In Estes v. Texas (1965) the
Court concluded that cameras in
the courtroom, particularly in notorious criminal cases, may deprive
defendants of their due process
rights. The danger that television
studios may unduly influence the
participants in the trial and collapse
the distinction between the law
and entertainment outweighs any
benefit that may be derived from
having cameras in the courtroom
in high-stakes cases.
The Court abandoned this reactionary approach in Chandler v.
Florida (1981). Richard K. Sherwin
surmises that the Court’s change in
attitude may have had to do with
its conclusion that it could use the
power of the media to its advantage:
“[Chief Justice] Burger realized
that the best way to counter bad
images [of the American justice
system] was to oppose them with
good ones. But where could such
images be found? Burger had an
answer. Permit TV cameras inside
the courtroom. Let the public see
orderly criminal proceedings with
convictions being swiftly and surely dealt out. This would not only
provide the sought-after images of
judicial order and stability; it would
also reinforce the crime control
values that Burger championed.”
One can only conjecture as to the
accuracy of Mr. Sherwin’s analysis,
but the fact remains that, in the
wake of the aforementioned decision, the law and the media have
consummated a marriage whose
consequences continue to be felt
in our own times.
In many instances today the live
courtroom trial has become a televised spectacle, joining the ranks of
advertisement and entertainment.
The more notorious the trial, the
more media coverage it is likely to
generate. Even a humdrum breach
of contract case from South Texas
may become the subject of primetime programming on the major
networks of New York, Chicago,
or even London, should it happen
to strike a chord with the public.
One might conclude that everyone stands to gain from this arrangement. The network calls attention to the problem of unnatural and
unhealthy standards of beauty being imposed upon women and girls,
while also attracting more viewers.
The client gets to experience the
catharsis of telling the world of
her troubles. She also increases
her chances of obtaining academic
fellowships, lucrative modeling
contracts and other post-pageant
benefits due to the widespread attention she has merited. Her lawyer
taps into a fountain of free publicity
for his firm and his services, while
simultaneously enjoying an opportunity to potentially influence
the participants in the trial.
As far as the law of trial publicity
is concerned, who could reasonably
object to an attorney responsibly
taking on the role of public relations
counsel for his client? A recent
American Bar Association publication, for example, seems to encourage it: “In effect, you are adding
hundreds and possibly thousands of
dollars to your services when you
help a client get quoted or profiled.
Many clients understand the additional value they have received
and are appreciative. Even if they
do not have enough experience to
be able to quantify the value of what
you have provided, clients usually
are impressed with the fact that you
have connections in the media.”
Beyond abiding by the rules of
professional conduct of their respective states, what rules, if any,
should attorneys respect in their
role as public relations counsel for
their clients? According to Richard
K. Sherwin, they should attempt to
avoid colluding with the forces of
decadence within contemporary
mass culture that would produce a
pure spectacle wherein “pleasure
dominates meaning.”
Mr. Sherwin believes that, despite the cynicism of postmodernist
critics such as Jean Baudrillard who
dwell on the deleterious influence
of the media, the means exist by
which attorneys may craft their
public relations narratives as to
avoid the banality of “commodified
enchantment,” as he puts it.
Rather than espouse a cynical
brand of postmodernism, Mr.
Sherwin argues for “an affirmative (postmodern) construct that
can counter the leaching out of
authenticity and the ensuing erosion
of meaningful (“fraternal”) connections with others.”
What would such an affirmative
discourse look like? Mr. Sherwin’s
only examples come, surprisingly,
from the cinema. The example at
issue in this writing comes from the
courtroom. Was the legitimacy of
Domonique Ramirez’s case eroded
by the spectacular effects of the
glamour pages, gossip shows and
soft-news programs that promoted
it, or did her case truly stand for the
power of the law to ensure fairness
and equity in an imperfect society?
The attorney bringing this case
strove to frame his client’s story
in a psychologically, culturally
and legally affirmative manner.
His gender, race and class-based
arguments caused much consternation at the local level, while at
the national and international level
they generated overwhelmingly
sympathetic responses. Because
of his candid and superior storytelling capacity, his victory in the
courtroom has come to stand for
much more than a beauty queen
recuperating her crown.
Many people in San Antonio
view this case as the triumph of
a disenfranchised, marginalized
Latina youth over the wealthy,
powerful, largely Anglo establishment that has arguably dominated
the city for nearly two centuries.
Others across the country and
even abroad have viewed this
case as an example of a young
woman vindicating her right to
resist the unnatural and unhealthy
standards of beauty imposed on
her and that also negatively affect
the self-image and wellbeing of
many women today.
The law of trying cases in the
media, in conclusion, may refer
to much more than compliance
with certain enumerated codes
of conduct. It may also refer the
challenges attorneys encounter in
attempting to communicate the
socially significant content of their
cases via the mass media, since
such entities are often inimical to
meaningful public discourse.
Recently Rosa Parks celebrated what would have been her
100th Birthday. In commemoration of her importance in history
the U.S. Postal Service issued a
Rosa Parks stamp in celebration
of her historic stand in the face
of racist segregation.
Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 and passed away
on October 24, 2005 at the age
of 92, but what she did for the
cause of civil and human rights
will live forever. Her act of
defiance did not begin the Civil
Rights movement, but provided
the fire needed to dismantle
white supremacy and rejuvenate
the demand for justice.
Her refusal to give up her
seat to a white passenger on
a Montgomery, Alabama city
bus made her an inspiration to
freedom-loving people of all
ethnic groups. In those days,
the 1950s, blacks and other
minorities were being bombed,
lynched, and beaten by the KKK
and a state of terror existed in
the South unabated.
December 1, 1955 was the
day that Rosa Parks refused
to give up her seat to a white
passenger, something that was
required by city ordinance. As
ignorant as this sounds that
was the norm in a society that
was based on white supremacy
and injustice. Her sit-down
strike led to the creation of the
Montgomery Improvement Association, which was led by Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. A direct
boycott of the city-owned bus
company was initiated which
ended up lasting 382 days and
brought the image to the rest
of the world that there was no
democracy in America if you
were not white.
International pressure began
to rise as a result of her actions,
as millions across the globe
began to question America’s
commitment to freedom so
often pronounced before world
forums. People honored the
boycott, and the bus company
lost thousands of dollars in
fares, and finally the City of
Montgomery lost a Supreme
Court Decision which made
their segregationist ordinance
unconstitutional by barring
segregation on public transportation. This was not just a victory for blacks, but a victory for
Mexicans in Texas and others
across the nation. Her simple
act of rebellion resulted in her
arrest, but it set the stage for the
civil rights battles that were yet
to be fought.
However, there are some
historic records that need to be
set straight. Rosa Parks was no
rookie. She was a committed
civil rights advocate with the
movement for many years prior
to her historic act of rebellion
on that fateful day in 1955. For
more than a decade she was
active in fighting racism, and
was not just an average person
that decided to take a stand one
day. She knew what it meant to
fight the Klan being raised on a
farm in which her grandfather
had to defend the family against
racist and violent attacks by
Klansmen.
Her husband was an activist
in the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored
People (NAACP), and she became a member and an officer at
a time when death threats were
ever present for simply being a
NAACP member. Some of her
most important work involved
recording incidents of persecution against blacks and creating
records that the NAACP needed
to make a case against segregation. Contrary to popular belief
she actually refused to give up
her seat on several other occasions before 1955. Rosa Parks
was no ordinary person as proclaimed by some, but an active
participant in the war against
racism and segregation. Rosa
Parks stood up for all of us by
sitting down and defying unjust
laws and attitudes.

Clinton’s contribution

With the departure of Hillary
Clinton as Secretary of State,
now is the time to reflect on
her legacy, not just in the field
of diplomacy but her broader
vision for the United States as
a catalyst for turning idealism
into action.
Recently we have seen the
rise of a new humanism -- the
desire of people to do something bigger and more lasting
than themselves. Making Good
has become the ethos of a generation committed to making a
more just world.
But how can we mobilize and
organize the efforts of individuals and small groups into a sustainable long term movement?
Secretary Clinton’s work
provides an answer. Under her
leadership, the State Department created a suite of public/
private initiatives that brought
together visionaries from the
two sectors in groundbreaking
programs.
These coordinated cross sector actions can accomplish
amazing things. They must
become an essential part of ongoing American foreign policy.
Take the Clean Cookstoves
Alliance, for example. Every
year, nearly 2 million women
and children die prematurely
from the toxic fumes of traditional cookstoves and open
fires. The Alliance raised over
160 million dollars in support
of the goal of 100 million clean
cookstoves by 2020.
This is just one program
under Secretary Clinton’s
groundbreaking umbrella organization, the Global Partnership Initiatives, headed by Kris
Bladerston. He has identified
four elements that contribute
to successful public/private
partnerships. Each of which is
worth emulating.
The first is leadership. Without a strong visionary leader,
inertia and routine become the
enemy of action.
Second, a successful partnership requires a platform. Bringing activists together through
the convening authority of an
influential organization expands the conversation and
connects projects and people.
Third, the partnership itself
is critical. Mutual support
and teamwork isn’t just about
money, it’s also about networking, shared values and communication. The communication
revolution is a vast network for
collaboration and combining
resources.
Finally, professionalization
is key. Sustaining long term
change means engaging with
the issues in a progressively
informed and agenda setting
atmosphere. We need professional programs for those who
want to make a career of making good.
These four elements are a
good place to start building a
culture of commitment that is
broad and deep. Turning idealism into action is a natural extension of the new humanism;
the time has come to build an
organizational infrastructure
to support this new movement.
We have yet to learn what
Secretary Clinton will do in
the coming years to extend her
work at the State Department.
We hope that she will continue
to advocate for public/private
partnerships and remain a leader in the worldwide movement
to embrace the power of making
good to transform lives.
There is no way forward
without risks. But inaction is
the greatest risk of all. Action
combined with careful planning
is a lesson we have learned
from the Clinton State Department; let’s not forget it as we
take the next step forward.

Reagan’s Legacy: economic freedom

President spoke eloquently:
“One of the greatest contributions the United States can

freedom as the key to economic
growth. A creative, competitive America is the answer to a
changing world, not trade wars
that would close doors, create
greater barriers and destroy
millions of jobs. We should always remember: Protectionism
is destructionism.”
Oh, sorry! Did you think
that was President Obama?
Actually, the President who
spoke those words was Ronald
Reagan in his last State of the
Union address 25 years ago.
In his two terms in office,
President Reagan gave America
a powerful transfusion of his
own optimism and hope. He
rekindled a sense of the possible, rescuing America from
defeatism and restoring our
confidence and pride in this
great nation. That transformation of America was possible
chiefly because of Reagan’s
unshakable faith in the power
of ideas.
President Reagan’s wisdom
and insight on the power of
freedom continue live on in
The Heritage Foundation’s
Index of Economic Freedom.
His legacy shines brightly in
the experiences of many developing economies that have
joined the free world only in
recent decades. The embrace of
economic freedom by the young
democracies of Eastern Europe
and the former Soviet Union
has proven particularly remarkable, and many other countries
have made gains in reducing
poverty by adopting measures
that open up their economies.
Regrettably, America’s leadership in advancing economic
freedom has been fading. According to the recently released
2013 Index, the United States
remains just a “Mostly Free”
economy. America’s economic
freedom is at its lowest level
since 2000, and its scores have
declined six years in a row.
Recently, we commemorated President Reagan’s 102nd
birthday, renewing our commitment to economic freedom is
the best way to restore confidence in the power of conservative ideas, which can resurrect
America’s opportunity for all.

The Early Childhood Award is
designed to support public or

H-E-B will present each of
the five regional finalists with
a $5,000 check to help enhance
or create new kinder readiness
programs that prepare children

The overall statewide winner
will be announced at the H-E-B

ceremony on May 3, 2013 at the

The Early Childhood Award
complements H-E-B’s Read
3 Campaign, an early childhood literacy initiative aimed at
educating parents and caregivers
about the importance of reading
to children a minimum of three
times per week, and to provide
families with the tools and resources they need to prepare their
youngsters for school.
H-E-B has opened 14 literacy
centers within stores in San Antonio and South Texas featuring
age-appropriate tables and chairs,
an expanded kids’ library section,
and a stage to host store events

Texas A&M-S.A. debuts book
series at St. Philip’s College

with St. Philip’s College,
announced the publication of
St. Philip’s College: A Point
of Pride on San Antonio’s
Eastside. The book is the first
in a series Texas A&M-San
Antonio is sponsoring through
Texas A&M University Press
called Peoples and Cultures
of Texas.
Dr. Maria HernandezFerrier, president of Texas
A&M University-San Antonio, joined the author, Dr.
Marie Pannell Thurston, and
the president of St. Philip’s
College, Dr. Adena Loston, to
celebrate the debut.
“I am thrilled that Dr. Marie Thurston has brought this
important story to life. She
poured her heart and soul into
this project to preserve forever
the story of this historic college and the role it played in
the development of our city,”
said Dr. Ferrier. “There could
be no more fitting subject
for the first book of Texas
A&M-San Antonio’s series
that examines the peoples and
cultures of our great state than
this historic college here right
here in San Antonio.”
The inaugural publication
tells the story of the nation’s
only college to be federally
designated as both an historically Black college and an Hispanic-serving institution, and
marks the 115th anniversary
of the founding of St. Philip’s
College. The announcement
was made at the college’s
Black History Month Opening
Ceremony earlier this week.
“This month has special
significance and what better
time to announce the publication of a book that captures
the untold stories of so many
whose contributions molded
our community and this institution of higher education
into what it is today,” said Dr.
Adena Williams Loston, president of St. Philip’s College.
“We hope that everyone will
take the time to experience the
stories told in this historical
book. We are very fortunate
to have a partner like Texas
A&M-San Antonio to recognize and share the history of
St. Philip’s College and San
Antonio’s Eastside.”
Beginning in 1898, the college opened its doors as St.
Philip’s Normal and Industrial
School in San Antonio, offering sewing classes for black
girls. It was the inaugural effort in a program, founded by
the West Texas diocese of the
Episcopal Church, to educate
and train former slaves and
other African Americans in
that city.
Originally tied to St. Philip’s
Church, about three miles
east of the downtown center,
the school grew to offer high
school and then junior college
courses and eventually affiliated with the San Antonio Independent School District and
San Antonio College. One of
the few remaining historically
black junior colleges in the
country, St. Philip’s, whose
student body is no longer
predominantly black, has also
been designated a Hispanicserving institution.
Known by many as “the
school that love built,” St.
Philip’s College claimed in
its 1932 catalog, “There is
perhaps as much romance surrounding the development of
St. Philip’s Junior College as
there is of the “Alamo City” in
which it is located.”
That love story, also containing dominant strains of
sacrifice, scarcity, creativity, determination and pride,
finds its full expression in
this history by Marie Pannell
Thurston. Based on archival
research and extensive interviews with current and former
alumni, faculty and friends, St.
Philip’s College presents the
heartwarming and inspiring
record of a school, the community that nurtures it and the
collective pride in what the
institution and its graduates
have accomplished.
The author is local historian
and coordinator of the Oral
History Project for St. Philip’s,
Dr. Marie Pannell Thurston.
Her Ph.D. is from the University of the Incarnate Word.
The inauguration of Dr. Marie Pannell Thurston’s book “St.

UTSA Math professor
named AMS Fellow

Manuel Berriozábal, professor in the UTSA Department of
Mathematics, has been named
an inaugural Fellow of the
American Mathematical Society (AMS) for outstanding
contributions to the creation,
exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of
mathematics.
Berriozábal is nationally
recognized as the founder of
the San Antonio Pre-freshman
Engineering Program (PREP)
in 1979 and its program director
through 2003. The four-year,
mathematics-based summer
program has been replicated
through Texas as TexPREP
and has received more than $40
million in public and private
funding and in-kind support.
The sources include colleges
and universities, the State of
Texas, government agencies,
public and private industry, individuals, and school districts.
The program also operates in
locations outside of Texas as
PREP-USA. More than 25,000
students have been served
through PREP programs; the
high school graduation rate has
been 99 percent; and the college
attendance or college graduation rate has been 90 percent.
“I consider it a great honor to
be recognized with other professional colleagues who have
made significant contributions
in the mathematical sciences,”
said Berriozábal. “I very deeply appreciate the support that
UTSA has provided me to pursue my work in mathematics in
the service of our community.”
Berriozábal’s list of awards
and achievements include the
American Society for Cell
Biology Bruce Alberts Award
for Excellence in Science Education in 2009, the University
of Texas System Chancellor’s
Council Innovations in Education Award in 2007, and the
Mathematical Association of
America Yueh-Gin Gung and
Dr. Charles Y. Hu Award for
Distinguished Service to Mathematics in 2001.
PREP program accolades
include the Presidential Award
for Excellence in Science,
Mathematics and Engineering
Mentoring, a Texas Higher
Education Star Award, citations
from the Texas Legislature, and
a congressionally mandated
BEST Building Engineering
and Science Talent Project
citation.
An author or co-author of
more than 30 publications in
journals and conference proceedings in topology and math-
ematics education, Berriozábal
has made presentations at 60
local, state and national conferences involving engineering,
science and mathematics education. Additionally, Berriozábal
has spoken before a Congressional Subcommittee on Basic Research and the Texas
Lieutenant Governor’s Special
Commission on 21st Century
Colleges and Universities.
He received his doctoral
degree in mathematics from
the University of California
at Los Angeles, his master’s
degree in mathematics from the
University of Notre Dame, and
his bachelor of science degree
in mathematics from Rockhurst
University in Kansas City.
Currently, Berriozabal serves
as founding co-director of PhD
PREP.
For his lifelong efforts championing mathematics education,
the San Antonio City Council
renamed a local educational
“one-stop-shop” for college
access advice, guidance, and
workshops the Dr. Manuel P.
Berriozábal Café College.
AMS’s Fellows’ program
was designed to increase the
number of mathematicians
recognized by their peers for
distinguished contributions to
the profession and to honor
excellence.

UTSA football inks 25 recruits for 2013

This past Wednesday was like
a second birthday or Christmas to
college coaches around the nation,
including UTSA’s Larry Coker.
Of the 25 players signed this
week, 17 of them are on the defensive side of the ball. Ten of the
17 defensive players are defensive
backs.
“This is no doubt the best
class,” said Coker at Wednesday’s
national signing day. “We’ve got
numbers and positions filled. The
coaches did a great job of staying
on the coaches till the end and we
got some late signees.”
“It’s not only the best athletically but academically it could be
a very strong class,” he added.
Geographically in terms of out
of state recruits, three are from
California, one each from Florida,
Indiana, Oklahoma and Maryland.
In state recruits total seven
players come from the Dallas/
Fort Worth area, four each from
the San Antonio area and Central
Texas, three from the Houston
area and the rest form the Golden
Triangle.
Coker explained at Wednesday’s national signing day that the
offensive and defensive lines were
a priority. Four offensive linemen
join the Roadrunners roster, none
under 6-foot-3 and 270 pounds. In
addition, four defensive linemen
all 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds or
heavier make up the 2013 class.
Of the defensive lineman, the
one with the biggest expectations
surrounding him is Justyn Eddins.
He is a 6-foot-4, 240 pound Junior
College transfer from Newhall,
Calif. According to Rivals.com
he runs and 4.6 40-yard dash and
was a second-team All-Northern
Conference selection as a sophomore. He recorded 41 tackles and
2.5 sacks. He is listed as a junior
this season.
“He (Eddins) is the best that we
have seen on film. To get him was
a great fit for us,” Coker said.
Despite the class being predominantly defensive players, the
players signed on the offensive
side of the ball are solid pickups.
Among the more exciting players
who might be able to make an
impact right away is Aron Taylor
from Warren High School in San
Antonio. The 6-foot-2, 195 pound
wide receiver has a 32 inch vertical and maxes out at 265 on bench
and can squat 405 according to
Rivals.com. The Roadrunners
only recruited one wide receiver
and according to Coker, Taylor
was their guy.
The Roadrunners also only
signed one quarterback, two running backs and no tight ends.
"I think we already have three
of the best tight ends I have ever
been around in college coaching. We signed one quarterback,
which we wanted. We signed two
running backs. I think we filled
the needs on the offensive side,”
Coker said.
Most of the recruits will likely
redshirt and Austin Robinson is
no exception as there will already
be quite the competition at the
quarterback spot this offseason.
The 6-foot-4 quarterback out of
Bellaire, Texas might likely be the
quarterback of the future. He was
a Dave Campbell’s Texas Football
Top 300 selection and led his high
school to the first-ever Southwest
Preparatory Conference BigSchool Championship. He has all
the tools to be a FBS quarterback
and proved in high school that he
can run and throw the ball.
One player who flew under the
radar of many schools is Jarveon
Williams, a 5-foot-10, 180 pound
running back from Judson High
School in Converse. According to
Coker, Judson head coach Mark
Smith (and Johnny Manziel’s
former head coach) spoke highly
of the young man and his talents.
Williams began his high school
career as a defensive back but
moved to running back his senior
year. He earned second-team allarea and first-team All-District
25-5A honors.
His size and 4.5 speed are a
dangerous combination for any
opposing defense. Last year he ran
the ball 187 times for 1517 yards
for 21 touchdowns.
Overall, UTSA landed a solid
class of future playmakers and

and think about retirement.

to injuries.
He underwent left-hip surgery Jan. 16 and the Yankees

Carramán, recientemente clubes
del estado de Sonora (México),
Tucson (Arizona) y El Paso
(Texas) enviaron felicitaciones
por el éxito que la liga ha logrado
durante la presentación de torneos
especiales que se organizaron
durante el 2012.
“Me da gusto que nuestra liga
sea reconocida por clubes de otros
estados y de México. Ello conforta
para seguir adelante promoviendo
el béisbol en un alto nivel, ya que
los equipos que participaron en
torneos del 2012 vinieron bien
reforzados con jugadores de gran
calibre y ex profesionales”, agradeció Carramán.
Asimismo añadió: “La buena
noticia es que ya se trabaja en el
primer torneo que será durante las
vacaciones del Spring Break, por

Scorpions sign Matt Bonner afirma que los Spurs

6-inch, 28-year-old defender
from Croatia, has signed with
the San Antonio Scorpions FC
for the 2013 North American
Soccer League (NASL) season
that begins April 6.
“The sudden retirement of
Ryan Cochrane created a need
to sign a top-level central
defender with firsthand experience in Eastern European
soccer,” said Head Coach Tim
Hankinson. “Vucko will be a
towering presence on the field
that will dominate play in the
air and physically mark the
league’s best strikers.”
The Scorpions’ newest player earned 19 caps for Croatia’s
U-21 team between 2004 and
2006. He was called up to
the national team by manager
Slaven Bilic as a replacement
for Dario Knezevic for the May
2010 friendlies against Austria,
Wales and Estonia. Vucko will
join his new Scorpions teammates for training camp beginning Friday, March 1.
“We think Vucko will enjoy
playing in San Antonio and
competing for the Scorpions
and Soccer for a Cause,” Hankinson added. “I’m excited

“Me gusta apoyar los eventos
de nuestra organización y ver
que los grupos de estudiantes
sobresalen enseñando a otras
agrupaciones estudiantiles.
Cuando asistí a la preparatoria
también me tocó tomar cursos
de ciencia, me fascinan los
experimentos. Creo que este
equipo de ciencias va a ser
digno contendiente en su especialidad”, apuntó Bonner.
Por su parte, la estudiante
de secundaria Victoria Woods
(Twain Middle School) contó
haber obtenido excelente experiencia durante los trabajos
y experimentos que presentaron
junto con sus tutores.
“La visita de Matt Bonner nos
sorprendió. Fue bueno tenerlo
con nosotros, él se vio bastante
interesado en nuestro programa.
No sé mucho de experimentos
químicos, pero ahora estoy
motivada y le echaré ganas a
todo lo que se me encomiende
hacer”, añadió Victoria.
En su pasada gira del 2012,

y amateur, será homenajeado por

En su récord personal, Flores
tiene excelente una foja ya que logró
vestir la franela en equipos de liga
menor, así como en semi profesional
con el equipo Muzquiz de la Liga
Chibel Esquivel.
En la región de San Antonio,
Ramiro Flores logró destacarse
como titular con los equipos A’s y
Piratas del magnate Nino Martínez.

artistas invitados.

their certifications at the Good
Careers Academy. Since the
school's beginning in 2009, more
than 800 students have entered the
academy, with a placement rate
upon certification in students' field
of study of over 80%.Current program offerings include Pharmacy
Technician, Medical Assistant,
Certified Nurse's Aide, Computer
Support Specialist, Medical Coding and Supply Chain Associate.
Goodwill also expanded its Good
Choices services to give clients the
tools they need to stay on the job
by improving the health and financial stability of their families. To
accomplish this, Goodwill partners
with other organizations to deliver
work supports, health and wellness,
career progression and financial
strengthening services.
For example, through Good
Choices, Goodwill partnered with
community health providers to offer affordable, convenient preventive health care services at its stores,
providing health screenings and
immunizations to more than 4,800
people in 2012.
Contract services unit grows
Goodwill created 68 new jobs
in its Contract Services division
in 2012. Through 17 contracts for
services with federal and community agencies, Goodwill's Contract
Services department employs more
than 450 team members. Of those
employed in Goodwill's AbilityOne Contract Services Unit, 90 percent face significant disabilities that
limit their employment options.
Through services ranging from
grounds keeping to document management and HVAC maintenance,
the team maintains 3,800 acres of
property, equivalent to nearly 3,000
football fields.
Donation and retail sales increase in 2012

Increased community support,
including the successful completion
of a $3.3 million capital campaign,
has helped Goodwill Industries of
San Antonio reach more people with
services to help them find and keep
good jobs.
Goodwill served 52,839 people
in 2012 with educational programs
and career-building services. That
number represents an increase of
1,300 more individuals than the
previous year. Goodwill placed
2,194 people into jobs in 2012, 60
more than in 2011.
"Community support for Goodwill and its mission is stronger than
ever," says Marla Jackson, COO and
interim President/CEO of Goodwill.
"We've experienced increased support at all levels, from individuals

as Amazon and E-bay. Goodwill
made a book sale online every 11
minutes in 2012, selling more than
45,000 books and generating more
than $430,000 in sales. In addition,
the non-profit earned highly favorable seller ratings for quality service
on the sites.
With a mission to help change
lives through the power of work,
Goodwill relies on community support through donations of household
items and monetary gifts. Donated
items are re-sold at the non-profit’s
retail stores, which serve as job training sites while generating revenue
for services. With this model, nearly
90 percent of every dollar raised is
spent on services that assist people
in finding better jobs and building
careers.

Escribo este mensaje porque estoy
muy triste. Mi esposo no me habla
porque le fui garante a mi cuñado en
un préstamo y no consulté con él. Yo
sé que debí hacerlo, pero mi hermana
me pidió un favor porque él necesitaba el dinero. Yo sé que hice mal. Ya
le he pedido perdón, pero él no cede.
Me duele, me entristece, dormir
y vivir con una persona que no me
habla. ¿Qué debo hacer?
Este es el consejo que le dio mi
esposa:
Estimada amiga:
En la mayoría de los países y de los
casos, los cónyuges son responsables
el uno de las deudas del otro. De modo
que usted firmó un documento legal
que promete que usted, o su esposo,
pagarán la deuda si su cuñado no
puede saldarla él mismo. Usted defraudó la confianza de su esposo al
comprometerlo con un préstamo sin
siquiera pedirle permiso.
No me extrañaría que esta no sea
la primera vez que usted y su esposo
hayan tenido un conflicto con relación
al dinero. Es muy probable que usted
no lo haya consultado acerca de esta
situación en particular porque sabía
que él le diría que no. Sin duda sabía
que él habría considerado que era un
riesgo muy grande, así que usted, sin
que él lo supiera, lo comprometió a
hacer lo que no hubiera querido hacer
por su propia cuenta....
Es interesante que usted no dice por
qué su hermana y su cuñado necesitan
ese dinero. ¿Es que perdió su empleo?
¿Acaso uno de los dos ha estado muy
enfermo? Tal vez usted no lo mencione porque se debe a que ellos han
sido irresponsables o descuidados en
el pasado, y ahora han acumulado una
deuda considerable....
Dice un acertado proverbio bíblico:
“No te comprometas por otros ni salgas fiador de deudas ajenas; porque
si no tienes con qué pagar, te quitarán
hasta la cama en que duermes”.Este
proverbio describe lo que puede
suceder cuando las personas se comprometen como fiadoras de otras sin
tener suficiente dinero para cubrir la
deuda. Su esposo bien pudiera saber
que el tener que pagar esa deuda
pondría en peligro las finanzas de
su familia, y es prudente de su parte
preocuparse por eso.
Le recomendamos que nunca le
preste dinero a nadie a no ser que
tenga lo suficiente como para regalárselo. No es que sea malo prestar
dinero; en realidad, puede ser un
acto de bondad y generosidad. Sin
embargo, si no tiene lo suficiente
como para darlo a modo de regalo,
entonces no tiene lo suficiente para
darlo a modo de préstamo....
¿Cómo puede usted hacer que su
esposo vuelva a hablarle? Muéstrele
que está preocupada por el dinero.
Haga todo lo que esté a su alcance
para lograr que se pague esa deuda.
Gaste menos dinero usted misma y
pruebe que comprende la preocupación que él siente por sus finanzas.
Y reconozca que usted defraudó
su confianza y que él tiene por qué

home” for its church services.

Adventist Church, Childress
Memorial will hold its regular
Sunday bible school service at
9:30 a.m. followed by the morning worship service at 10:45
a.m. each Sunday at 4123 E
Houston St. Childress Memorial will continue to hold regular Sunday services at Ephesus
Seventh Day Adventist Church
as the congregation rebuilds.
Since the fire that destroyed
the structure, Childress Memorial has received support from
faith-based and civil organizations, the City of San Antonio,
District 2 Councilwoman Ivy
Taylor, City Manager Sheryl
Sculley, Community Bible
Church, Conquerors Assembly,
and the Archdiocese of San
Antonio.
“It is tragic that such a beautiful historic building was
ruined in East San Antonio,”
said Councilwoman Taylor.
“But there is beauty in the
community coming together
for the ultimate goal of helping this historic church. It is
living proof that when there
is effective teamwork and collaboration, the impossible is
possible.”
The cause of the fire is still
under investigation. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) National Response Team (NRT)
along with ATF Special Agents
from the Houston Field Division, San Antonio Field Office
were activated Saturday at the
request of the San Antonio
Fire Department to assist with
investigation of the fire that
occurred at Childress Memorial
Church of God in Christ. At the
time of the fire, no injuries or
fatalities were reported.

Rodeo y San Antonio Convention and Visitor Bureu presentaron el sábado 2 de febrero
el Cattle Drive y el Western
Heritage Parade sobre la calle
Houston, desde San Antonio
Children’s Hospital hasta la
Plaza de El Álamo.
Apostado a lo largo de esta
avenida, el público presenció
una escena típica que data desde principios del siglo pasado
cuando el ganado era conducido
por las calles céntricas de la
ciudad.
A las 11 de la mañana, una
cuadrilla de típicos cowboys
encabezó el desfile conduciendo el ganado de longhorns con
el aplauso de los espectadores.
Tras ellos siguió el desfile de la
herencia con una cabalgata de
vaqueros y damas en atractivos
atuendos al tradicional estilo
western.
La festividad incluyó una
feria tipo western en la Plaza de
El Álamo de 11 de la mañana a
una de la tarde con atracciones
para niños y adultos. Todo esto
como antesala al San Antonio
Stock Show & Rodeo, que
se lleva a cabo del 7 al 24 de

Bank (SAFB), con su presidente y jefe ejecutivo oficial, Eric Cooper, el señor Armand Obadia

la segunda cena altruista “Champions Against Hunger”. En dicha cena se logró reunir la cantidad
de $130,000, cantidad donada al programa de asistencia alimenticia del SAFB. Popovich estuvo
presente con sus jugadores y asistentes, quienes estuvieron atentos sirviendo bebidas y platillos a

para beneficio del Food Bank (SAFB), con el que se brinda ayuda para surtir la alacena del SAFB,
de la cual dependen familias menos afortunadas de la región de El Álamo y sus alrededores. En
la concurrida cena, el delantero francés Boris Diaw acompañó al señor Cooper y a su entrenador
Popovich, quienes convivieron con invitados. “De antemano se agradece toda la contribución que
empresas aportaron a este programa del SAFB, por igual al propietario señor Armand Obadia,
invitados y nuestros jugadores. Con este evento se beneficiarán familias necesitadas, por lo que
seguiremos apoyando causas como esta”, dijo Popovich.
El escolta francés Nando De Colo mostró su experiencia para servir los mejores vinos de mesa.
El popular beisbolista internacional Ventura Díaz, jugador y coach del club Broncos (sosteniendo
el pastel) celebró su cumpleaños en la grata compañía de amigos y compañeros de equipo. Los
esposos Linda y Roberto Garza le ofrecieron una deliciosa carne asada y un sabroso pastel. Linda
es comentarista en la Liga Regional Veteranos Carramán y su esposo Roberto, quien con éxito y
pasión beisbolera está haciendo su debut como manager, es jugador y patrocinador de Broncos.
En amena convivencia los jugadores y seguidores del club de béisbol Palaú SA celebraron la victoria ante el equipo Zacatecanos, hazaña por la que el copatrocinador señor Roberto Villarreal “La
Yerba” (segundo de extrema derecha) propietario de la empresa Villarreal Concrete, acompañado
por su hijo Jesse “Chuy” Villarreal, felicitaron al manager el receptor Ramiro Flores. El manager
próximamente será objeto de un merecido homenaje que le rendirá la Liga 3 Hermanos por su

Fashion Show & Health Fair.
En esta actividad participaron
diferentes escuelas para dar
realce a la festividad que tiene
por objeto promover la salud
del corazón mediante una dieta
acertada y ejercicios adecuados
para mantener un estilo de vida
saludable.
El evento se desarrolló de 11

Podría decirse que Arturo
y Sandy Cerna nacieron para
ser restauranteros. Su visitado
restaurante El Jarro de Arturo,
el éxito y la calidad en sus platillos, habla por ellos.
Este restaurante ha estado al
servicio de San Antonio desde
1975, y siendo una cadena
familiar, sus platillos siempre
han dejado un buen sabor en el
paladar de sus clientes.
El negocio, ubicado en el
13412 San Pedro, se especializa – principalmente – en
comida mexicana en realidad
podría considerarse más texmex. Cuenta con ricos platillos
especiales del día, especiales
de la semana, antojitos, platillos vegetarianos y hasta cenas
tex-mex.
Para empezar ordené unos
súper nachos que llevan frijoles, queso, guacamole y jalapeños. Después, mi plato
principal fueron unos tacos de
fajitas de sirloin, acompañados
de una rica crema poblana.
Aunque se dice que es mexicano, sus platillos son más
tex-mex que mexicanos, pues
cuenta con tacos cripsy, tacos
puffy, chalupas (conocidas
en México como tostadas de
frijoles), y otros platillos muy
conocidos en Texas.
Las bebidas de este lugar son
muy bien preparadas también,
incluyendo sus ricas margaritas conocidas como Arturo´s
Margarita, que lleva Tequila

Esta tienda fue creada con el
motivo de promover el deporte
en las mujeres. La manera en
que lo han logrado ha sido por
medio de coloridos contrastes de
ropa deportiva, accesorios y tenis
para correr.
“Esta tienda es increíble, a mí
me encanta porque además de
promover el deporte en las mujeres, los colores y estilos de ropa
hacen sentir a cualquiera como la
mujer más guapa y deportista del
mundo”, dijo Kirta Carroll, directora de mercadotecnia de Six:02.
Está claro que muchas mujeres no se animan a hacer deporte porque no sienten que

To say the new
changes to the hotel
have been great would be
an understatement. The new
management team had the monumental challenge of staying true
to the classic charm which
the hotel is known for,
yet, creating a modern
and sophisticated space to
meet the times. Challenge
accepted and met!
Listen, not every hotel in
town receives the honor of
being chosen as the “The
Official Hotel of the Alamo.” The Emily Morgan
is an iconic hotel and there
certain expectations from
locals as well as tourists
traveling here from around
the globe. For me, the changes
and new additions have more than
met those expectations.
While, there is a definite visual
facelift which has been performed
to the property, I’m glad to report
that the charm and friendly atmosphere remains throughout. Staff
members, ranging from the valet
area to the front desk, are always
smiling and ready to assist you
with anything you may need.
And how can you go wrong when
someone hands you a delicious
warm cookie before you even get
the keys to your room?
My spacious room, overlooking some of the prettiest views
in the city, was exactly what I
needed for a weekend away from
home. Stylish Texas-inspired
furniture and warm
color selec-
tions
gave the room
a cozy feel. I loved the
detailed design, from
the long

to the room, to the perfect
leather couch and unique postmodern lamps in the sitting area.
Oh, and did I mention the hotel is
pet-friendly? At Emily Morgan,
the animal-loving staff goes out
of their way to make sure your pet
enjoys their time there as much as
you and your family. They even
have a specialized pet room-service menu. Yes, you heard right,
it’s a pet menu so you can also
pamper your four-legged friends.
Still, one of my favorite touches was the collection of rare artifacts housed in the hotel lobby.
The most unique was an actual
drilled core from the walls of
the Alamo! I was told it is the
only piece of the Alamo allowed
outside its sacred grounds. It just
goes to show you that the staff is
truly trying to give their guests
an authentic experience.
Are you a foodie? You’re
in luck. Emily’s posh restaurant and bar are both awardwinning and, trust me, they
deserve it. ORO’s chef, Chris
Cook, created a seasonal
menu that will mesmerize
your taste buds. While I
was there, I enjoyed a Pan
Seared Chilean Sea Bass
made to perfection just
after having one of the best
crab cakes I’ve ever had.
I’m not exaggerating when I
tell you that Maine has nothing on
the recipe Chef Cook has come
up with for his crab cakes. If
nothing else, drop in some time to
enjoy a couple of them with a nice
glass of wine. In case
you didn’t know, the
bar at Emily Morgan
has one of the top
Martini selections in
the city. Not to mention,
one of the most stylish
looks of any bar in town.
I must say, there are fewer
experiences as intense and
powerful as having breakfast,
dinner, or drinks just feet away
from the historic Alamo.
Remember, the hotel literally sits atop the former
battlegrounds. This is where
in 1836 a fierce fight took
place; one which would shape
our state and our nation forever. How cool is that? Oh,
and if the phrase “Psychic
Happy Hour” caught your
attention earlier, I wasn’t
joking. Every Thursday,
the Emily Morgan holds a
special happy hour which
has been voted as the best
in the city. It features free
psychic readings, massages, and
live music accompanied by great

Overall, my date with Emily
was everything I expected: fun
and relaxing. Without a doubt,

Hace días estuve extremadamente ocupada, diariamente salía
de la casa sin organizar mi cuarto.
Al final de la semana el desorden
era tan grande que no encontraba
nada y mientras buscaba mis lentes, histéricamente exclamé: ¡No
aguanto más!, ¿cómo he permitido que mi recámara se convierta
en un desastre?
Este incidente me hizo recordar
a una amiga quien se preguntó lo
mismo, solo que ella se refería a
su esposo y yo a mi cuarto.
Un día me dijo: ¡No soporto a
mi marido!, ¿cómo he dejado que
mi matrimonio se haya convertido
en un desastre?
Lo que sucede es que una
problema no se torna catastrófico
de un día a otro, es un proceso
paulatino. Al principio todo es
armonioso, pero poco a poco se
deteriora por razones diversas
y sin darnos cuenta, nos vamos
resignando y seguimos tolerando
aspectos que no resolvemos, hasta
que un día decimos: “¿Cómo he
llegado aquí?”.
Por ejemplo, quien tiene sobrepeso dice: “¿Cómo me dejé
engordar?”. Esas libras de exceso
no aparecieron de la noche a la
mañana, fue un incremento gradual, pero todo comenzó cuando
se resignó a la primera libra de
más.
Otro ejemplo sería una mujer
que sufre de abuso físico por su
pareja, primero toleró los gritos,
luego los empujones y finalmente
permitió los golpes. Si el abusador la hubiera querido golpear
en la primera cita, ella lo hubiera
detenido y el maltrato no hubiese
escalado.
¿Por qué dejamos que nuestra
vida se deteriore antes de tomar
medidas? Porque creemos que es
más fácil aguantar que remediar.
Dicen que cuando tocas fondo es
que aprendes la lección y encuentras el impulso para salir a flote,
pero ¿por qué esperar a hundirte
para flotar? ¡Tú puedes emerger
a la superficie hoy y disfrutar tu
vida plenamente!
Si te encuentras en una situación
que va en decadencia, ¡resuélvela
ya!, busca apoyo u orientación.
No permitas que un dolor sea
inaguantable para ir al doctor.
Ni esperes a que la relación con
tu pareja se haya deteriorado

At the movies with Covo & Ayotte: “Identity Thief” and “Side Effects”
Film critics Angela Covo and Dennis Ayotte, Jr. bring you the truth about Hollywood’s current offerings every week. The duo weighs in on two highly anticipated films that open this weekend.

Covo’s take on “Identity Thief”:
I fully expected to pan
this flick – but I laughed and
laughed, I shed real tears and
I ended up rooting for all the
characters. In spite of some silliness and more than just a little
vulgarity, if you need and want
a good laugh, this is the film to
see this weekend.
Melissa McCarthy is absolutely a comedic genius with
boundless energy and unlimited charisma. And she proves
her talent and star power by
consistently delivering great
performances – rising to the
top with her Oscar-nominated
performance in “Bridesmaids”
and now even a hit network
television show on CBS (Mike
and Molly).
Paired with Jason Bateman,
the fabulous timing and chemistry between the two ultimately
saves this movie.
The adventure boils down to
a classic road trip-style film,
the perfect vehicle to deliver
laughs and visual gags and
even some ridiculous little side
stories without completely destroying the movie.
And the subject is timely as
well – identity theft is pretty
widespread and a serious issue. So when Sandy Bigelow
Patterson’s (Bateman) life gets
turned upside down in the space
of a day or two, the audience
can relate. The whole premise
gets a little outlandish when
Patterson decides he’ll so whatever it takes to clear his name,
including traveling thousands
of miles to where his identity
thief seems to have turned up.
What I am most impressed
with however, is McCarthy’s
ability to create this character
Diana who is in Patterson’s
own words, “diabolical,” yet
somehow manages to capture
the audiences’ sympathy.
It turns out that Bateman is
probably the one who deserves
the most credit for making
this film work. The role of
the identity thief was originally supposed to be a man,
but after Bateman, who also
co-produced, saw McCarthy in
“Bridesmaids” he recruited her
for the role.
So even though the screenplay has plot holes and weaknesses that could seriously mar
the effectiveness of most movies, the dynamic comedy team
Ayotte’s take on “Side Effects”:
Director Steven Soderbergh’s
latest film “Side Effects” is a
must see film for 2013. The
star-studded ensemble lives
up to their billing and then
some, particularly Rooney
Mara (“Girl with the Dragon
Tattoo”).
Originally, Blake Lively was
cast in the role of Emily, but
there’s no question in my mind
Mara was the perfect choice for
the role. Mara’s performance
alone is worth making the trip
to see the film. She plays a
troubled young woman, Emily,
who is intense and disturbed.
Her mystique reminds me of a
young Sharon Stone in 1992’s
“Basic Instinct.” She brings the
entire film together and carries
you through when the film gets
a bit sleepy. Mara is the future
of Hollywood and is expected
in an upcoming and untitled
Terrence Malik production.
While Mara’s work in this
film is brilliant – she’s in great
company – the entire cast is
first-class. Channing Tatum
plays Mara’s handsome husband – whose promising future
falls apart when he is busted
for insider trading and gets
stuck paying his dues in prison
for four years. Catherine ZetaJones as Dr. Siebert and Jude
Law as Dr. Banks are convincing as psychiatrists to Emily,
who suffers from extreme depression. Her life hasn’t been
perfect and her husband did
spend the first four out the five
years they’ve been married
behind bars.
After a major incident in
which Mara sends up red flags
about her mental health, sympathetic Dr. Banks (Law) orders
her to treatment once a week
under his care. Emily (Mara)
begins to get healthier after
a new medicine is found that
helps her after many popular
anti-anxiety drugs didn’t help
with her issues. However,
the side effects from the new

forever.
Through her hardship, dark
secrets begin to unravel and
are revealed. “Side Effects”
is labeled as crime/thriller so

and a phenomenal cast, Soderbergh’s camera work and cinematography is amazing. The
(sometimes even action adventure types) created by Bateman
and McCarthy overwhelms all
the flaws in this film and even
lets you go home smiling.

“Identity Thief” opens nationwide Feb. 7, 2013 – the film
is rated R and runs just over an
hour and half.
unique camera angles and shots
create a heightened viewing
experience. Soderbergh’s distinctive cinematographic style
is evident and has dramatic
impact in this film. He is one
of those directors like David
Fincher, Wes Anderson or
Quentin Tarantino that have
definite styles that can be spotted right away.
The film is rated R thanks to
some adult content and brief
nudity, but nothing too crazy.
Mara does bare it all in one
scene and, if I remember correctly, Tatum has his shirt off
at one point for the ladies.
The film is not too long at
106 minutes but a couple of
stretches seem a little slow.
Overall, the pace of the film
is lively enough and generally
pretty steady. Splurge to see
this on the silver screen this
weekend … this one likely to be
one of my top 10 films this year.

Ya viene el día del amor y
la amistad y me pone de mal
humor porque mi esposo nunca
me ha regalado nada. Él dice
que no se necesita una fecha

A tu pregunta, “no”. La razón
te la diré. Hace unos años escribí
mis razones en no creer. Miro que
tú no leíste esa columna. Agarré
una cuadra de vecinos usándolos
a ellos como ejemplo. Aquí te va.
ARIES (marzo 21-abril 19)
Pasa tu tiempo calmadito con tu
esposo o tu novio. Has preparaciones para la llegada de uno
que te visita. Tus supervisores
flexibles. Tú recibirás un consejo
gratis.
Micaela, dos de mis vecinos
cayeron en esos datos. Los dos
eran varones. Uno tenía 67 y
el otro tenía 7 meses. El mayor
no le correspondía porque era
casado y muy feliz. Dice que
no espera visita pero si eso fuera
probablemente serían sus hijos.
También dijo que él es retirado
solo que no tiene supervisores.
El chiquito no tiene esposa y no
se sabe la palabra. Él ha tenido
muchos visitantes porque él es
un bebé y desde que nació no le
faltan visitantes. Él tampoco tiene
un supervisor solamente que sus
padres sean esos y son ellos, Dios
los escogió. El chiquito no sabe
nada de consejos.

Hoy es un buen día para que vayas
a la pesca. Esta noche es ideal
para actividades. Confía en tus

En estos días había una vecinita
de tres años. Para ella lloviendo
no es un buen día. Sus años no
la permiten tener actividades

tres años. Pueda que sea atenta si
hay razón para hacerlo, como si
le dan un regalito.
GÉMINIS (mayo 21-junio 29)
Este fin de semana será magnífico
para socializar. Haz tiempo para

Bueno en estos días, solo la
madre de mis vecinos, ella tiene
95 años, ella ya no sale. Está ciega
y perdió el sentido del oído hace
años. Como quien dice no tiene
nada que compartir con nadie.
¿Ahora me entiendes porque
no creo en el horóscopo? La vida
nos tiene tanto que ofrecer como
para preocuparme por algo que el

‘Cheers for three years’

This month marks three years
that I’ve been writing this
column. If you’re wondering
how…so am I.
I will never forget the first
edition, titled “A weigh lifted.”
I though the title was genius,
if you read it you’d understand
why. However, it didn’t start
that way.
The first time I submitted this
column to Nina, my editor, she
basically told me it was garbage
but in a nice way that wouldn’t
crush me. I always take criti-
cism with a grain of salt and
use it to become a better writer.
This case was no different.
My first draft read like one of
those free self-help pamphlets
you’d find at a free clinic or in
the waiting room at your doctor’s office. I initially wrote
about what I thought others
should do then just letting it
come organically and helping
people through my own experiences.
I haven’t written this column
for fame or status. I write it because I wanted people to know
that they aren’t alone out there
in the world. I want them to
know that there is someone else
out there with just as crappy a
car, who struggled to meet the
right woman like I did and more
than anything I want them to
have a laugh at my expense.
Because let’s face it, your
mistakes aren’t funny but other
peoples are hilarious.
Some of my columns have
gone down as instant classic
and others have gone down as
pointless rants understood by
no one. There are also a few
columns that will not ever see
the light of day. Thankfully my
editor has my back and knows
when Dennis is just having one
of those weeks and shelves it
knowing our publishers would
likely hang me if it did print.
All of this is normal (for me
at least) I think. You can’t always expect to hit a home run,
some weeks I just struggle to
make it to the game.
Regardless, one thing has
stuck with me throughout the
past three years and that is the
fact I got a chance to do it.
When no one knew who I was,
my editor is pretty much the
only one who saw some talent
in me (besides my mom). No
doubt it took time for me to
find my voice, and I’d be lying
if I wasn’t surprised I’ve lasted
this long.
So as I wrap number 120
or so, I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my life with
you and hope you’ve found
some comfort here. If not, I at
least wish that you might have
laughed once (or three times).
I will forever be a MAN willing to share my many issues.
