Dear Friends,
Compassion. This ministry was born of it.
For more than 60 years, Presby’s Inspired Life has been
responding to the needs of older adults with a compassion that empowers them to learn, grow and pursue that
which gives their lives joy and meaning.
That is why it is fitting that we should take the time in this
report to celebrate those who are committed to continuing
Presby’s legacy of compassionate care. It is a legacy
that spans generations; however, it extends most prominently between individuals—from resident to resident,
from team member to resident and from benefactor to
resident. It is that one-on-one connection that inspires
compassion and enables it to grow and flourish in unique
and life-giving ways.
In the pages that follow, you will find incredibly inspirational stories that highlight the benevolent spirit that lives
within and beyond our communities. Thank you for your
part in making these stories a reality. Together, we are
fostering communities of compassion—sustaining the
foundation, while building it up and making it even stronger.

our Affordable Housing communities report annual

“Compassionate care is giving people a level of living
that is more than just tending to their physical needs it’s
tending to their emotional needs as well,” said Carol Young, a
Rydal Park resident and supporter of the Campaign for
Compassionate Care.
The Campaign for Compassionate Care was established
in 2015, to offer Presby’s Inspired Life and our benefactors
a unique, historical opportunity to celebrate the milestone
of its 60th Anniversary. The Campaign served as an invitation to the Board of Directors, other concerned individuals,
faith leaders and partners from throughout the corporate
community to assist in strengthening Presby’s ability to
offer benevolent assistance and life-enrichment services
to residents in need of a helping hand.
Carol’s friend lives in Greenway Presbyterian Apartments—
one of three Affordable Housing communities on the campus of 58th Street in Southwest Philadelphia. She hopes her
gift to the Campaign will help to give her friend, and others,
the types of social enrichment and exposure to arts and
culture that she enjoys at Rydal Park. “When you care about
someone, it’s probably because you love them and you
are concerned about their welfare, which is what this (The
Campaign for Compassionate Care) is all about,” says Carol.
Since its founding over six decades ago, Presby has
evolved into one of the Philadelphia region’s most
respected faith-based, not-for-profit organizations—
providing independent residential, personal care and
skilled nursing care to more than 3,000 older adults across
35 Market-Rate and Affordable Housing communities. At the
heart of the organization’s legacy is its promise to provide
exceptional living experiences for older adults—no matter
their income level. The Campaign for Compassionate Care
supports residents with a variety of needs—from social
enrichment and medical expenses to unexpected emergencies and pricey repairs for vital medical services.
For Betty Sieber, Rydal Park resident and longtime supporter, it’s seeing that Presby’s high-level of care continues to be lived and experienced by all who call a Presby
community home. “Compassion is really what it is all
about,” said Betty. “That’s what Presby does best— provide
compassionate care.”

care retirement community—offering independent living, personal care and skilled nursing.

60% of residents at Presby’s Broomall community rely
on financial assistance. The community also boasts the
largest total number of Partners in Caring participants,
who enhance the quality of life in many other ways.
L
illian Rubin’s office chair isn’t new, but it looks like
she just put it together yesterday. Even after 13 years
as the Manager of Tioga Presbyterian Apartments in
North Philadelphia, Lillian is hardly at her desk. Most likely
one can find her bopping around the halls, visiting with one
or more of the 113 residents who call Tioga home. If she’s
not there, she’s hosting an event in the community room or
gathering her team members for lunch.
Lillian serves the Tioga community with a distinctive energy and spunk that, in some respects, literally radiates off
the walls. She values being present—being a resource and
support to the older adults entrusted to her care.
s
But that’s what you see. What you don’t see is her selfless act of charity—a gift she gives (and has given for years)
twice a month, every month to a resident she doesn’t know
and has likely never met, through the Partners in Caring
program.
Presby’s Partners in Caring program is an employee giving
initiative that offers team members a unique opportunity
to philanthropically support the needs of Presby residents.
Gifts made via payroll deduction, provide Lillian and 162
other team members currently participating, a simple, yet
meaningful, way to give back to the ministry beyond their
everyday roles.
“I love the work I do and the interactions I have each day
with the residents at Tioga,” said Lillian. “But I know there
are many more individuals beyond the doors of this community that need my support. My participation in Partners
in Caring is a meaningful way in which I extend my service
to Presby in order to impact an even greater number of lives
for the better.”
Presby team members do more than work together—they
give together as Partners in Caring.
More than 162 team members participate in Presby’s employee giving program, Partners in Caring.

Each year, Presby honors requests for assistance with
medical bills and other health-related expenses from
residents facing financial hardship.
T
o a passerby the building at 16th and Reed Streets
in South Philadelphia may just look like another
apartment building. But for Ms. Lyles and her 83
neighbors it’s “home.”
Reed Street Presbyterian Apartments is one of 31 affordable housing communities sponsored and/or managed by
Presby’s Inspired Life. Scattered throughout Philadelphia
and the surrounding counties, the individuals who live in
these communities come from myriad backgrounds, but
most always, they come to stay in the neighborhoods where
they have built their lives.
Ms. Lyles is a quintessential example. A South Philadelphia
native, she raised her four sons in a comfy little home just
blocks from Reed Street and worked 42 years in the billing
and records department at Graduate Hospital—a job she
“loved” —also in South Philadelphia.
She was not a stranger to Reed Street having visited her
cousin and a friend there frequently in the years prior to her
arrival. Those visits left a positive impact on Ms. Lyles, who
often observed how well the community was kept and how
content her cousin was in her cozy apartment.
In 2011, when chronic back pain made it apparent that she
could no longer stay in her home, Ms. Lyles chose Reed
Street. Her prior knowledge of the community and the fact
that it was in her neighborhood made it an easy choice. But
she would quickly learn that it was much more.
Beyond the support of her active lifestyle, Reed Street has
provided Ms. Lyles with a level of care she never knew existed. After a fall, Ms. Lyles was undergoing costly dental
work. The bills were mounting when Edith Edmunds, the
Manager of Reed Street told Ms. Lyles to bring her the bill.
“Are you sure you want that bill?” Ms. Lyles asked. Edith replied simply, “I will help you.” And she did—with assistance
designated by the Barra Fund.
The Barra Fund is a resource which allows Presby’s Inspired
Life to uplift residents who encounter extraordinary supplementary services or purchases, like in the case of Ms. Lyles,
an uncovered health care cost.
“It meant a lot to me,” said Ms. Lyles. “I would have been paying
that bill forever and ever and ever…,” she said, with a smile.
“I told a girlfriend, I’m glad I didn’t get into one of those
other buildings that I applied to. And she asked why. I said
to her because they don’t do what we (Reed Street) do.”
What Presby does is care compassionately. It’s as simple
and powerful as that.

I
n 2015, as part of our 60th Anniversary celebration,
Presby’s Inspired Life launched the Campaign for Compassionate Care, with a goal of raising $600,000 in gifts
and pledges. Our shared vision was to secure transformational support for benevolent assistance and vital services
that help residents experience “life in all its fullness.”
It was a goal that could only be attained with the open-hearted compassion of our Board of Directors, staff, faith leaders
and other caring partners from throughout the community.
Among the first to contribute to this vital Campaign were
members of Presby’s Senior Executive Team.
“These individuals are valued leaders within the organization, each bringing a wealth of gifts and talent to their roles,
which is why we looked to them to provide philanthropic
leadership for this critical initiative,” said Judee M. Bavaria,
President & CEO. “Their response was tremendous!”
Their answer to the invitation came swiftly and without hesi-
further inspiration
“Giving to others is a key element to successful living. I
appreciate the opportunity to witness the impact of
charitable giving each day.”
– Tama Carey,
Executive Vice President of Operations & Chief Operating Officer
“Presby cares about its residents, its staff and everyone
we collaborate with. The organization truly and deeply
cares about the seniors and goes the extra mile to
enhance their quality of life. I feel proud to be a part of it.” - Vidhi Anderson
Executive Director of Housing & Land Development
“It is a privilege to serve an organization that nurtures
such a powerful spirit of philanthropy among team
members. We are pleased to share our many gifts and
we feel especially blessed to be motivated toward benevolence in so many special ways.”
– Lynn M. Johnson-Porter
Vice President of Philanthropy & Mission Support
tation. Deeply rooted and aware of the ministry’s need, team
members understood how profound their gifts would be.
“I feel immeasurably blessed to work at Presby’s Inspired
Life and to have the ability to give to the Campaign for
Compassionate Care,” said Jennifer Kappen, Vice President
of Finance. “On a daily basis, I see how contributions provide tremendous benefit to our residents, from those who
have outlived their funds at our Market-rate communities, to
hearing wonderful stories from our Affordable Housing team
about residents’ gratitude for new eye glasses or furnishing
for their apartment.”
Collectively, the nine-member team contributed close to
$100,000—or 16% of the total goal. Together, with the help
of many more compassionate individuals and corporations,
Presby attracted more than $653,000 toward this historical
Campaign. Lives have been transformed and the ministry
of Presby’s Inspired Life strengthened. And this is just the
beginning.
“Charitable giving to organizations that make a
difference in the lives of older adults is important
to me. Giving of my time and talent to Presby’s
Inspired Life isn’t enough. As a leader and member of the Senior Executive Team, I have a strong
desire to go the extra mile and also contribute
philanthropically.”
-Cindy Hoffman, Chief Financial Officer
“As I visit our Affordable Housing communities
and I see our most vulnerable residents it further
compels me to contribute to the improvement
of their lives. Through the Compassionate Care
Campaign, we have the opportunity to foster an
environment of giving that becomes much bigger
when joined with others.”
-Bill Canteen
Executive Director of Affordable Housing
“Our residents are amazing individuals. It is a beautiful
gift to be able to support them above and beyond
our every day roles.”
-Tracey Cavacino
Corporate Director of Quality Assurance
& Clinical Risk Management
“As a member of the leadership team, it is important to show our commitment to the mission and values of
the organization in a multitude of ways. The mission prospers not only by the time and talents given by team
members every day, but through the financial support that helps sustain it. It makes me feel good that I am able
to financially support the important work done every day.”

exceptional living experiences for older adults well into the future. By naming
Presby in your will, or as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, you won’t affect
your current cash flow and you can change your decision at any time. No gift
is too small, and the impact can be profound as you honor a loved one with
your future gift.
To create your own legacy of compassion and care, contact Lynn Marie JohnsonPorter, Vice President of Philanthropy and Mission Support by calling 610-260-1153
