Things are now settling down back
to normal after the summer holidays
and the excitement of the Olympics
last month. Team GB did us proud by
becoming the first host country in
history to better its medal count in the

HEALTH BENEFITS OF WATERMELON
You may have heard that eating watermelon is good for you, but did you know just how healthy it is?
Here are the top benefits of eating this delicious fruit...
Helps you stay hydrated
Hopefully you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of liquids
throughout the day. But you also consume a significant amount
of water by eating foods with a high water content...
Watermelon is 92% water and the fibre it contains also helps you
feel full and avoid overeating.
May help prevent cancer
Like tomatoes, watermelon contains lycopene and a number
of other plant compounds which may well have anti-cancer
properties. Lycopene has been linked to lower incidences of
certain types of cancer, especially those found in the digestive
system. Watermelons are also a rich source of cucurbitacin E
which is known for its anti-inflamatory and tumour-inhibiting
properties.
Is good for your skin and hair
Watermelon is a good source of 2 vitamins that are important for health skin and hair: vitamins A and C.
Vitamin A keeps your hair in tip top condition by helping support the body’s hair building proteins.
Vitamin C helps in the production of collagen – a protein that helps skin to stay moist, replenish itself and prevent sagging and other signs
of aging.
Can help improve digestion
Due to its high water content and the small amount of
fibre it contains, watermelon helps keep your digestive
system healthy.
Helps relieve sore muscles
Watermelon contains an amino acid called citrulline
which has been shown to reduce muscle soreness
after exercising in athletes.
Additionally, the combination of watermelon juice
and citrulline seems to enhance the overall effect of
the substance compared to consuming citrulline by
itself.
Reduces inflammation
Being a good source of lycopene, vitamin C and cucurbitacin E, eating watermelon may help to reduce inflammation and oxidative damage
in the body. This has been borne out by recent studies on the health benefits of lycopene and watermelon powder.
Additionally, lycopene’s antioxidant effects can help to keep your brain healthy and may even delay the onset and development of
Alzheimer’s disease.
If you’d like to eat more watermelon, you can buy it whole, in slices, chunks or in juice form from leading supermarkets!

TO FLOSS OR NOT TO FLOSS?
In the press recently there’s been a lot of coverage over whether flossing actually does any good or whether it’s a
waste of time... Here’s our take on things...
Earlier this summer the US Government dropped flossing from
its latest guidelines due to a lack of research showing that it
actually helps remove plaque effectively (by law, the “Dietary
Guidelines for Americans” must be based on scientific evidence).
In the UK, the British Dental Association and the Oral Health
Foundation responded by agreeing that there is no evidence
that flossing is actually good for your health…
These conclusions were based on 25 or so scientific studies that
are currently available.
Unfortunately, most of the studies that have been done on
flossing have used outdated research methods, tested too few
subjects, or didn’t last long enough.
For example, some research lasted only 2 weeks - far too short
to see whether flossing can prevent a cavity developing or not. And one study tested just 25 people after only a single use of floss…
Clearly more research is needed, and we have a feeling that if a suitable long-term study were done on enough participants, the results
would be more supportive of flossing. Even if its effectiveness at removing plaque is unclear, at the very least it’s still an extremely effective
way to remove food debris from between the teeth...
And many leading dentists such as Wayne Aldredge - president of the American Academy of Periodontology - still recommend flossing
in order to prevent gum disease. “It’s like building a house and not painting two sides of it,” he said. “Ultimately those two sides are going
to rot away quicker.”
So what’s our take on flossing here at Euro Dental Care? Is it a waste of time or would you be better off spending a minute or two cleaning
between your teeth with your dental floss each day?
We agree with Dr Aldredge. Based on what we see every day, we believe that it’s important to clean all of the surfaces of your teeth
regularly (and by that we mean twice a day!)
For many people, cleaning between the teeth with an interdental brush just isn’t possible because their teeth aren’t spaced widely enough
apart. In these cases, dental floss is ideal because it’s often the only way to get between the teeth (although it’s important that it’s used
correctly - see “How to Floss” on page 5).
‘Floss is of little value unless the spaces between your teeth are too tight for the interdental brushes to fit without hurting or
causing harm.’ Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association.
If you’ve ever flossed before, you’ll know just how effective flossing can be at removing food that’s left between the teeth after a meal.
And if you’ve only flossed occasionally, you’ve probably noticed just how bad the
decayed food that comes out on the floss can smell – a clear reason to hold on to
that floss for a while!
Some people have difficulty using floss. For example, for men with large hands it
can be difficult to get the floss in place, especially at the back of the mouth.
In these cases you may find it easier to use a floss pick (a small fork with a section
of floss between the picks) that you can slide up and down between the teeth.
If you do have slightly wider spaces between your teeth, we recommend that
you use an interdental brush as these are easier to manipulate and therefore
tend to be more effective at cleaning between the teeth than floss.
Conclusion
So, our conclusion “to floss or not to floss:” we recommend flossing if it’s the only way you can clean between your teeth (it’s important
to remove the food particles that tend to stick there - and no-one debates how effective floss is at doing that!) However, you still need to
use good technique. IF you can get an interdental brush in between the gaps in your teeth, we’d recommend doing that over flossing.

HOW TO FLOSS THE RIGHT WAY
If done incorrectly, flossing can be a waste of time, and can even cause problems. For example, if you’re not careful you can damage your
gums, teeth and as well as any work (bridges, etc) your dentist has carried out on your teeth.
Additionally, flossing can dislodge harmful bacteria that are then released into the bloodstream where they can cause infections...
However, Tim Iafolla – a dentist from the National Institutes of Health sums it up best: ‘It’s low risk, low cost. We know there’s a possibility
that it works, so we feel comfortable telling people to go ahead and do it.’
So here’s how to do it:
1.
Take a length of floss, about 18 inches, and wind it around your
index or middle fingers
2.
Holding the floss taut between your fingers and thumbs, slide it
past the tight contact point at the top of the teeth
3.
Gently brush the floss up and around each tooth, making sure to go
all the way down to just beneath the gum line
4.
Don’t see-saw backwards and forwards, the motion you should be
using is an up-down one when cleaning each tooth
5.
When you want to remove the floss to move to the next tooth, gently
move the floss back and forth until it comes out from between the
teeth
6.
Use a clean section of floss as you move on to each tooth
7.
Don’t force the floss or move it too quickly – this may damage your delicate gum tissue

IS SPARKLING WATER BAD FOR YOUR TEETH?
These days a lot of us are swearing off fizzy drinks and other beverages that contain a large amount of sugar or
artificial preservatives for health reasons...
Sales of bottled water have hit the roof and we can now buy more kinds of water than ever before... While your average bottle of Evian isn’t
going to cause any problems, people are less sure about the sparkling varieties. But are these drinks something that will damage your teeth
in the long term?
Well, there’s good and bad news... Sparkling water can damage your teeth, but it isn’t all cut and dried. The main reason is that water turns
more acidic when it’s carbonated due to the creation of carbonic acid. These drinks are nowhere near as corrosive to the teeth as regular
pop, but there are some flavoured varieties that actually have similar levels of acid to fruit juice. This was actually discovered by researcher,
Catriona Brown, right here at the University of Birmingham.
In tests, citrus fruits like lemon, lime and grapefruit, turned out to be the most acidic flavours because they already contain their own acids.
Combining them with the carbonic acid in water caused the same kind of
corrosive effect as orange juice (which is known to soften tooth enamel).
Another study from the Univeristy of Birmingham found that most still
water and flavourless sprakling water actually did very little damage to
teeth and would have to be drunk over a long period to cause any major
teeth erosion. So, take it easy and you should be OK!
Top tips to avoid damaging your teeth if you like sparkling water:
* Avoid flavoured waters
* Don’t consume sparkling water as your main beverage all the time
* Don’t add lemon or other fruit (especially citrus fruits) to your water
* Use a straw to reduce contact between carbonic acid and your teeth

QUESTIONS ANSWERED...

What’s the difference between dermal fillers and Botox?
Botox – short for Botulinum toxin - is a natural protein that is purified and
injected into areas of the face in order to temporarily relax facial muscles that
cause lines and wrinkles.
As we age, our store of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) – the component that helps
support our skin – starts to diminish, leaving us with lines and wrinkles. Using
dermal fillers, HA is restored to key areas of the face, lifting and smoothing the
skin and giving the patient a more youthful, fresher appearance.
Is it safe? Are there any side effects?
As medical professionals we believe that these treatments are extremely safe and deliver life-enhancing results for our patients. If we didn’t
believe so, we simply wouldn’t offer them.
The materials we use are well-tested, have been approved by the relevant legislative bodies and have been used in the treatment of
thousands of patients over many years. When delivered by trained professionals in a medical environment, there is very little risk.
All potential side effects and the results that can be expected are discussed with our patients during their initial consultation so that they
can make an informed decision.
Does it hurt?
For dermal filler treatments in sensitive areas – such as the lips – we can use a topical cream which helps numb the area. Also, we’re able to
use dental anaesthetic for areas around the mouth – a service only dental professionals are able to provide – which results in much more
comfortable treatments than may be available elsewhere.
Will there be bruising or swelling after the treatment?
This varies from patient to patient and some people find they don’t experience this at all. Some slight bruising or swelling is possible but
this shouldn’t last more than a day and (for ladies) is easy to cover
with makeup. You won’t need to take time off work after a dermal
filler treatment.
Will I end up looking “frozen” or unnatural?
A lot of people worry about this after seeing celebrities who’ve taken
their passion for facial treatments too far. Here at Euro Dental Care

I’m worried about getting a “trout pout!”
If you’re considering lip fillers you may be concerned
about the dreaded “trout pout” (thank you Lesley Ash!)
As above, we tailor our treatments to your needs and
wants. This means you’ll be able to rest safe in the
knowledge that you’ll have fuller, more defined, naturallooking lips to the degree that you feel happy with.
How long does the treatment last?
The procedure usually takes around 30-45 minutes. As
for the results, this varies from patient to patient but you
should be able to notice the results for up to 18 months.
Over time your skin will return to its pre-treatment
appearance, at which time you may decide to return for a
further treatment.
What happens if I don’t continue with dermal fillers?
Nothing. The treatments naturally wear off over time and you’ll go back to your natural appearance. As mentioned above, though, you can
have refresher treatments periodically to maintain the more youthful look and feel of your skin whenever you feel the need.
Will people be able to tell I’ve had treatment?
That largely depends on what kind of results you’re looking for. Some people want a stronger result that is noticeable from the outset,
while others prefer a more subtle, natural look.
For most patients, they’ll simply look refreshed and may get comments on how well they’re looking!
