HOOF STAND USE INSTRUCTIONS
Very important! Whenever a horse’s hoof is resting on a stand, the trimmer needs to
keep contact with the horse.
USING THE ‘POST’
Keep contact with the horse at all times.
Keep a foot on the base.
Position your body so that your knee is not braced behind
the horse’s hoof.
Be mindful not to have your feet where they may be struck
by the horse’s hoof falling off the post.
USING THE ‘SLING’ ON A FRONT LEG
Keep contact with the horse at all times.
Rest the hoof in such a position that the rasp
won’t contact the fabric (even though it is
resistant to rasping, it is NOT designed for
rasping).
The trimmer may need to steady the hoof with
one hand and use the tools one-handed.
USING THE ‘SLING’ IN A FARRIER STANCE
If you choose to use the sling in combination with the farrier stance, be sure NOT to hold the
horse’s leg rigidly. Use just enough weight on your inside leg to steady the hoof, with most
weight on your outside leg, so that the horse is able to extricate its hoof if necessary.
USING THE ‘SLING’ ON A HIND LEG
Keep contact with the horse at all times.
Use the sling at a height that is low enough
to be comfortable for the horse.
This photo is taken purely as a guide to the
height the hoof stand should be when
trimming back hooves. Note the angle of
the horse’s leg. For some horses,
particularly older horses or those with stiff
joints, this may be too great an angle, and
you may need the stand at a lower height.
You should NEVER leave the horse’s leg on
the stand without keeping contact with the
horse at all times.
