Shape Capers
Magic Box
By: Cathryn Falwell
By: Katie Cleminson
A group of children shakes
shapes out of a box and
discovers the fun of using
circles, squares, triangles,
semicircles, rectangles and
their imaginations.
Eva receives a very special
box for her birthday. When
she climbs inside, she
becomes a master magician!
After pulling quite a few
rabbits out of quite a few
hats, Eva throws a fantastic
party with lots of cake, the
very best musicians and
plenty of dancing. But for her
best trick, Eva wishes for a
pet named Monty and she
gets even more than she
imagined.

The Crayon Box that
Talked
By: Michael Letzig
Although they are many
different colors, the crayons
in a box discover that when
they get together they can
appreciate each other and
make a complete picture.
To an imaginative bunny, a
box is not always just a box.
Sitting in My Box
By: Dee Lillegard
The box in which all the
animals are sitting gets more
and more crowded until a
hungry flea comes along.

What Cardboard Boxes Can Teach Kids:
Six Learning Dimensions of a Cardboard Box
1. SPATIAL AWARENESS: Kids are constantly testing their
own size by crawling in, through, around, over and
under things.
2. COMFORT & SECURITY: Children are soothed by a
sense of being in small spaces.
3. EMPOWERMENT: In small spaces, kids feel big.
4. CONTROL: Cardboard boxes make ideal hiding
places.
5. SENSORY PLAY: The lack of sensory inputs is an
essential contrast to the more powerful and
deliberate stimulation we traditionally think of when
we talk about “sensory play.”
6. IMAGINATION: The neutrality is the black slate upon
which children so easily imprint their imaginations.

There Was
Was aa Little
Little Turtle
Turtle
There
There was a little turtle
Who lived in a box.
He swam in the puddles
And he climbed on the rocks.
He snapped at the mosquito,
He snapped at the flea.
He snapped at the minnow,
And he snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito,
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow,
But he didn’t catch me!

Jack
I’m Jack in a Box, I curl on the floor,
Smaller and smaller than ever before.
If I open my lid, you’d better take care,
Without any warning I jump in the air!
I’m Jack in a Box, jumping Jack in a Box,
You’ll scream when I give you a fright.
I’m Jack in a Box, jumping Jack in a Box,
Just watch as I vanish from sight!
