FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN`S CANCER
Fou nd a t io n f or Women’ s Can c er 2011 Annual Report foundationforwomenscancer.org This is a landmark year for the Foundation for Women’s Cancer. We are celebrating 20 years of accomplishments, and transitioning to our new name and expanded focus. Neither would be possible without your support, and we thank each and every one who has joined our family, especially those whose names appear on the following pages whose support was so critical in 2010. A great race grew into a great movement filled with the commitment and passion of the over 2,200 participants, representing 176 fundraising teams. So mark your calendar for Sunday, November 4, 2012, and join us as the movement builds, and expands our reach and our message. We are extremely grateful to our physicians — women’s cancer doctors — who guide and participate in all of our programs by volunteering countless hours each year. And finally, we always are humbled and inspired by the women whose lives have been touched by a gynecologic cancer. What we do, we do for you and the women who follow. We dedicate the 2011 Annual Report to you. Sincerely, Karen J. Carlson Executive Director AWARENESS The Oxford Modern English Dictionary defines “aware” as “meaning conscious, having knowledge.” For the past twenty years, the Foundation for Women’s Cancer has demonstrated its commitment to making women aware of the steps they can take to prevent gynecologic cancers, to receive a diagnosis at the earliest possible time and to be given the best post-diagnosis care. Through its more than 28 publications available in print and online, Hotline, award-winning Web site and media outreach, the Foundation fervently strives to give women the knowledge, tools and confidence to know when, how and where to seek care when a gynecologic cancer is suspected or diagnosed. This September the Foundation launched its LEARN, LISTEN, ACT campaign to encourage women to LEARN the symptoms and warning signs of each gynecologic cancer, LISTEN to their bodies, and ACT to take preventive steps and seek care from a gynecologic oncologist if a gynecologic cancer is suspected or diagnosed. In early 2011, the Foundation changed its name from the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation to the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, signaling its intention to be more actively engaged with women prior to a gynecologic cancer diagnosis — to alert them to preventive steps and warning signs with the hope that all gynecologic cancer can be diagnosed at the earliest possible time, greatly increasing the chance of cure. Since the Foundation declared the awareness month in 1999, thousands of advocates, academic health centers and members of the public health community have joined us in spreading messages about prevention strategies, risk factors, early warning signs and where to receive care. And here is a real awareness success story. The Foundation’s National Cervical Cancer Public Education Campaign engages young girls and women in a powerful prevention campaign through its 1-2-3 message that implores women and young girls to prevent cervical cancer by following three simple steps: 1. Vaccinate early; 2. Pap test regularly; and 3. HPV test when recommended. Twenty years ago it was unimaginable that the second leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide could be eliminated by taking these three simple steps! The Foundation is very proud of its collaboration with more than 30 national partners to bring its 1-2-3 message to every household in America. September, Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, offers another special opportunity each year. A hallmark of the month is the annual publication of the State of the State of Gynecologic Cancer: A Report to the Women of America. In its ninth publication in 2011, this year’s report will chronicle the advances made during the past twenty years in recognition of the Foundation’s 20th anniversary. foundationforwomenscancer.org And this has led to a movement — the Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Movement. Each November in Washington, DC, the gynecologic cancer community unites to rally the nation through the National Race to End Women’s Cancer. This year’s race was spectacular. Once again there was bright sunshine in the Nation’s Capitol the first Sunday in November when thousands gathered at Freedom Plaza to hear inspiring stories, and run or walk to end women’s cancer! We sincerely thank Gretchen Purser, 2011 National Chair, Jennie McGihon, 2011 Survivor Chair, and Debbie LeHardy, National Race to End Women’s Cancer Race Director and her amazing team, for making this year’s race unforgettable for the over 2,200 participants and the many, many supporters from around the country and around the world! See you November 4, 2012, in Washington, DC, for next year’s race! 2 0 1 1 Annu al Rep ort 1 Research One of the driving forces behind the creation of the Foundation for Women’s Cancer in 1991 was the recognition of the promise of better outcomes for women by ramping up funding for research. Leaders of the Society for Gynecologic Oncology determined that the most effective avenue to realize this promise was the formation of a separate philanthropic foundation. Now 20 years later, this vision has become reality. In 1995, the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, formerly the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, awarded its first two research grants. Since then 87 more promising young researchers have received an award through a competitive process overseen by the Research Grants and Awards Committee. Just this year the Foundation published its 20th Anniversary Research Portfolio that chronicled the research achievements resulting from the 89 “seed” grants using three measures of success: for Women’s Cancer Research Education Foundation Cancer Awareness Research Women’s Cancer Gynecologic ion for Women’s Foundat n Educatio h Awareness Researc logic Cancer Awareness tion for Women’s Cancer Gyneco h Education Foundation ic Cancer Awareness Researc s Cancer Gynecologic ducation Foundation for Women’ ss Research Education ncer Gynecologic Cancer Awarene ion for Women’s Cancer s Research Education Foundat Awareness Research Cancer logic Gyneco Women’s Cancer n Foundation for Women’s Awareness Research Educatio logic Cancer Awareness ation for Women’s Cancer Gyneco h Education Foundation gic Cancer Awareness Researc s Cancer Gynecologic ducation Foundation for Women’ ss Research Education ancer Gynecologic Cancer Awarene for Women’s Cancer ion Foundat n ss Research Educatio h logic Cancer Awareness Researc Gyneco Cancer y Women’s20th Anniversar n Foundation for Women’s Awareness REsEARCh Educatio Awareness Cancer logic Gyneco Cancer ation for Women’s h Education Foundation ogic Cancer Awareness Researc s Cancer Gynecologic Education Foundation for Women’ ss Research Education Awarene Cancer ancer Gynecologic ion for Women’s Cancer ess Research Education Foundat Cancer Awareness Research Women’s Cancer Gynecologic s A n Foundation for Women’ r Awareness Research Educatio logic Cancer Awareness dation for Women’s Cancer Gyneco PORTFOLIO formerly the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation RESEARCH POR TFOLIO • Did the grants enable and encourage young gynecologic oncologists to pursue a career as physician-scientists? • Were the grant recipients able to parlay their seed grants into sustained extramural funding? • Did the research funded by the Foundation lead to the dissemination of knowledge? On all three counts, the research program received an A+. Ninety-four percent of recipients are pursuing research today while caring for patients, allowing for an immediate bench to bedside to bench translation. Second, the original $2.5M in grant support has yielded $5.8M in extramural funding, a 23-fold return. And last, 325 peer-reviewed publications can be attributed to the research begun during the original grant period. The Foundation intends to continue its stimulus grant program with extreme gratitude to the families, family foundations and corporate partners who have made this success possible. It is 2 critically important that funding for these grants continue given the national decline in the number of physician-scientists with broad implications for not just gynecologic oncology, but also for obstetrics and gynecology and other biomedical subspecialties. Additionally, the majority of the stimulus grants were directed toward ovarian cancer research. The Foundation is committed to increasing research opportunities for both cervical and uterine cancer, the most common gynecologic cancer. Based upon the recent Research Summit convened by the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the Foundation soon will publish a series entitled “Research Funding Frontiers” that will detail research opportunities for the three primary gynecologic cancers. It is hoped that these documents will spur imagination and funding to expand the Foundation’s research portfolio to include more research funding, especially for cervical and uterine cancer. And finally, discussions are underway about other funding mechanisms to jumpstart promising research. The committee plans to strengthen the program through multi-year, interdisciplinary research with higher funding levels directed toward senior investigators. In addition, other funding models are under consideration, such as the venture capital model whereby the Foundation would seek out the most promising established researchers for funding. This approach has the significant advantage of allowing these established researchers to focus their research time without expending the time and effort required to develop extensive grant proposals. And just as the leadership envisioned 20 years ago, the Foundation for Women’s Cancer is succeeding in expanding knowledge and improving outcomes for women through the research funding. Fo un d a t i o n f o r wo men’ s cancer foundationforwomenscancer.org Education Where there is knowledge, there is hope. “Everyone was excellent! Content was at an understandable level. Topics & organization of lectures were well presented. Stayed in time limits, interesting, the physicians showed their humanity. I felt HOPE! Thank you for your passion.” ~ Evaluation from a participant in the Ovarian Cancer Survivors Course held on Saturday, April 9, 2011, in Albuquerque, NM, in partnership with the University of New Mexico. The courses also are a labor of love for the Foundation staff, who works diligently to ensure that everyone at each course has everything needed to gain the most from the course curriculum. This curriculum is developed by the Foundation’s Education Committee chaired by a gynecologic oncologist, who collaborates with other committee members and staff to carefully review the evaluations from each course and amend the curriculum when warranted. Since the Foundation for Women’s Cancer held its first survivors course in 1997, literally thousands of women have expressed similar views about their experience at one of the 47 courses held in 24 states throughout the country. These courses truly exemplify the heart of the Foundation and our members, gynecologic oncologists, who volunteer their weekend time to share vital information with women living with a gynecologic cancer. These highly skilled physicians actually vie to become part of the faculty because of their heartfelt commitment to patients. The Foundation for Women’s Cance r is pleased to sponso r the 2 0 1 1 Ovarian Cancer Survivors Course A FREE full day course for all cancer survivors, friends, family members and others. A new working group has been formed to investigate other distant learning opportunities, including Webinars. These courses are offered free of charge to survivors, and their families and friends because of the generosity of our partners. These courses began as a once-a-year event offered in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology. Now our partners include academic health centers and advocacy groups in addition to our corporate partners, enabling us to offer multiple courses in multiple cities each year. The Foundation also houses an extensive library of materials primarily geared to assist women living with a gynecologic cancer. In addition to those now available, more brochures are planned for women at risk for a gynecologic cancer with the hope that the knowledge provided will help them prevent these cancers or secure a diagnosis at the earliest and more ncer.org curable stages. Our latest brochure, LEARN, LISTEN, ACT to Maintain Your Gynecologic Health, encourages women to Learn the symptoms and warning signs of each gynecologic cancer, Listen to their bodies, and Act to take preventive steps and seek care from a gynecologic oncologist when a gynecologic cancer is suspected or diagnosed. All of the Foundation’s brochures are available both in print and electronic format. Despite current trends, there remains a high demand for printed material. Each year the Foundation ships approximately 48,000 brochures in response to requests from individual women, advocacy organizations, government agencies, health departments, academic center centers, physician’s offices, civic organizations and others. A complete list and a brochure order form can be found in the “Educational Materials” section of our Web site, foundationforwomenscancer.org. “Where there is knowledge, there is hope.” 4 Fo un d a t i o n f o r wo men’ s cancer foundationforwomenscancer.org SGO MEMBER DONORS The Foundation for Women’s Cancer acknowledges the following SGO members who financially supported the Foundation’s programs of public and patient education, and research during 2010.
