Dear Denise:
My sister Valerie Leri and I, and our colleagues Mike Stern and Jarrod Law, have undertaken an exciting
feature film project that has thus far presented an extraordinary journey for all of us. Val and I have written a
screenplay that we believe is compelling and significant. Mike is the author of a book, Yale’s Hidden Treasures:
Mystery of the Gothic Stone Carvings, that is now being marketed and was the genesis for this movie to be filmed
in New Haven and on the Yale University campus.
This screenplay, titled “Aaron’s Light,” is an inspiring fictional story with a mission to help those in our society
recognize the gifts people with special needs bring to the world. It presents a year in the life of a brilliant 23-yearold man with a diagnosis of autism, whose dream it is to attend Yale University’s School of Architecture.
This film is loosely based on Jarrod, and a good friend from the Netherlands, Timo (who has an ASD diagnosis), and other friends with disabilities. We’ve been working on this script for three years, and have been
fortunate to connect with professionals who have passion for its mission. Last year we attended a Yale event
and had the privilege of meeting Indian actor/director/social activist, and Yale World Fellow, Nandita Das. We
all believed that she was well suited to play one of the characters, Pakistani musician, Rafia, and when asked,
she said that she would be happy to do so.
We’ve been in discussion with Chris Lemmon (actor Jack Lemmon’s son) and his wife and colleague, Gina
Raymond, of Stone Manor Productions, regarding the production of this film. They love the script and the
mission of this film project (they have a son with autism, and a daughter at the Yale School of Drama) and
have told us that they would be delighted to produce it.
An old friend of Mike Stern’s, nationally recognized folk musician, Randy Burns (http://randyburns.net),
learned about our project and contacted us with an offer to do a title song for the film. He has created “Aaron’s
Light,” and we find this song, as we do all his music, beautiful and deeply moving (lyrics enclosed on page 12).
We are grateful for this extraordinary contribution.
Presently we are establishing a schedule and budget. After receiving Yale’s approval we will formalize our efforts
to secure funding for this film. We believe that we will be able to, with Yale University, the City of New Haven
and private investor support, gather the resources we need to bring this project to fruition.
Enclosed is our “Aaron’s Light” Script and supporting project information. (This information can also be
viewed and shared electronically by visiting http://view.imageammo.com/54c5. (This letter will be emailed to
you also so that you and your colleagues can access a live link to the digital presentaton.) Please note that the
“Filming at Yale University” application will be submitted as soon as we have the required logistical information available.
We look forward to receipt of Yale’s approval so that we can move forward with this extraordinary project that
will enrich many lives.
We thank you for your time and consideration.
Respectfully,
(onbehalfof“TheGroup”)

“But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light...”
Many of our lives are touched by autism. It is no longer a mysterious disability
about which most of us know nothing. There is an increase in books, magazines,
television shows and movies which educate us on this subject.
The mission of this creative collaboration is to produce a feature film that will heighten awareness
of the challenges facing people with disabilities. These individuals are often kept on the periphery
of our communities; their talents and prospective contributions largely ignored. Therefore,
whenever possible, this film project will incorporate the technical, creative and theatrical
contributions of people with disabilities. This will be achieved through independent outreach,
and through organizations such as Play with Grace (a Connecticut theater arts program) and
Exceptional Minds Studio (a Los Angeles non-profit vocational center & animation studio for
young adults on the autism spectrum). A percentage of the proceeds from this movie will be
directed to organizations that improve the lives of people with special needs.
Aaron’s Light is a story which encompasses the significant everyday struggles of a man, Aaron
Livingston, diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). This fictional story is loosely based
on the lives of our friends Jarrod, and Timo (a young man from the Netherlands who had hopes
of attending Yale one day), who both have autism. Each has been able to create a meaningful life
through involvement with community. Our main character Aaron, at the outset of this movie,
is tremendously fearful, has limited fluency, and has remained on the periphery of life. He is
someone we come to care deeply about, and embodies – to a greater degree – the vulnerabilities
we all share. He inspires us by overcoming his fears and actively pursuing a life-long dream.
This unique and moving film has its genesis in Yale’s Hidden Treasures, Mystery of the Gothic Stone
Carvings, a book containing photographs and little known information about these carvings. This
movie, along with its unusual back story, reinforce a powerful message — that in the pursuit of
life-long learning, there is much to be gained by embracing diversity and the values that create a
rich and purposeful life.
Many successful movies have been made about people with disabilities such as Rain Man, Forrest
Gump, A Beautiful Mind, Silver Linings Playbook, and more recently, The Road Within. The characters,
though they had varying challenges and different messages to convey, brought awareness to the
public that our lives are enriched by diversity. The talents and unique perspectives of people with
disabilities remind us that a community is strengthened by the contributions of all.
We believe that this movie, set on the picturesque and awe-inspiring Yale University campus, can
make a great impact internationally. Yale’s affiliation with the production of this film would set an
excellent example, offering the promise of real change in the lives of people with disabilities.
The producer of this feature film is Chris Lemmon & Gina Raymond of Stone Manor Productions.

Yale’s Hidden Treasures: Mystery of the Gothic Stone Carvings
TheGenesisoftheAaron’s LightFeatureFilm
What’s the Meaning of This?!
A hand-chiseled stone carving of a man with the head of a donkey,
wearing a tuxedo, a bow-tie and tails, standing atop the Law
School roof at Yale University...Who could have thought of
such a seemingly bizarre idea? For the first time, an entire
book is devoted to explaining, in detail, why literally
dozens of unusual stone figures adorn several of Yale’s
Gothic style campus buildings. How many people really
know about Yale’s “satirical” stone carvings appearing
throughout the campus and what do they know?
Through extensive research, this new and intriguing
120 page book (http://www.carvingswithclass.com)
will answer these questions while displaying 160
dynamic photographs of these masterful stone
sculptures from a bygone era of stone masonry.
The book,“Yale’s Hidden Treasures: Mystery of the
Gothic Stone Carvings” is the genesis for the
Aaron’s Light movie, a film in which these
intriguing stone characters are prominently featured!

Aaron’sLightStoryline
In this provocative and heart-warming drama, we begin our journey with 23-year-old Aaron
Livingston as he prepares to leave the security of his home with his mother in Dexter, Michigan to
embark on a new life in New Haven, Connecticut.
Aaron is a handsome young man with a brilliant mind, photographic memory, childlike innocence
and autism. Though talented and intelligent, his anxiety, obsessive compulsive behaviors, severe
stuttering, and anti-social tendencies present challenges that keep him on the periphery of life.
It is Aaron’s lifelong dream to attend Yale University’s School of Architecture. Before he can do so, he
must experience a non-academic year of independent living in New Haven. His mother insists that
he needs this time to develop the skills that will be necessary to handle the rigors of graduate school.
Aaron arrives in New Haven both excited and terrified. He often feels fearful and alone. In search of a
sense of comfort, he spends much of his time in his residence at the Hotel Duncan and exploring the
Yale campus. He is passionate about the Yale architecture and in particular, the Gothic stone carvings
on many of the Yale buildings. He finds great solace in knowing precisely where each stone carving
is situated and often ponders their cryptic meanings. He sketches them, among them, James Gamble
Rogers, the architect of this stone community that is comprised of peculiar and intriguing characters
such as the tuxedoed donkey man and the court jester.
He feels oddly compelled to share his thoughts, dreams and fears with these stone residents. To his
astonishment, he begins to hear responses and is unable to determine whether these voices are real
or imagined. These bizarre visits – which offer the friendship and guidance he hungers for – are an
extraordinary secret he can share with no one. Aaron’s growing attachment to this imaginary world
conflict with his desire to create a place for himself in the real one. Two special women seek out his
friendship: Olivia, a free-spirited artist, and Rafia, an introspective, Pakistani violinist.
By the movie’s end, Aaron does not learn whether he has been accepted to Yale but he sees that he
has choices for his future. All of the friendships he’s formed – whether stone or flesh and blood –
enable him to see that in sharing his gifts he enriches his own life as well as the lives of others. He
learns that he is not defined by his disability, and that he casts his own special and very bright light.
Ultimately, Aaron must face a liberating truth: he sees that the friends he came to love and depend on
in Yale’s stone community are all, in reality, parts of himself. These beautiful and sometimes strange
relationships Aaron forms in New Haven serve as the foundation for a whole new life out of the
shadows.

about autism or its many associated therapies, but rather to highlight some of the
personal and social issues that can prevent meaningful community integration for
people with disabilities. Our main character, Aaron, is loosely based on people
we know with special needs. Mental/developmental disability presents itself in a
wide variety of ways, and our character endures a number of challenges. This film
celebrates both Yale University and the City of New Haven but is not designed to
inform the audience about life as a Yale student or as a New Haven resident.

AccommodationsforIndividualswithDisabilities
(http://ogc.yale.edu/accommodations-individuals-disabilities-0)
Disabilities. The University may not discriminate in admissions, educational programs, or employment against any individual on account of that individual’s disability. Several statutes set out the
legal responsibilities of the University with regard to students and employees with disabilities. These
include the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the
Connecticut Fair Employment Practices law.
EmploymentofQualifiedIndividualswithDisabilities. Both federal civil rights and state fair
employment law prohibit discrimination in employment against qualified individuals with disabilities. Such discrimination is prohibited in all employment matters: hiring, promotion, pay, and other
privileges. For these purposes, an “individual with a disability” is defined as an individual with
a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities; a
person who has a history or record of such an impairment; or a person who is perceived by others
as having such an impairment. A “qualified individual with a disability” is defined as an individual
with a disability who, with or without reasonable accommodation, can perform the essential functions of the employment position. “Reasonable accommodation” is defined as modifications or adjustments to a job application process; to the work environment; or to the manner or circumstances
under which the position is customarily performed. Accommodations that create an undue hardship
to the employer are not required.
The University’s Office for Equal Opportunity Programs is responsible for implementing the University’s Employment Accommodation Program for Persons with Disabilities. The Office coordinates
the accommodation process using a case-management format. Contact the Office for more information at 432-0849 or visit website: http://www.yale.edu/equalopportunity/index.html.
EducationalPrograms.Federal and state laws and regulations also prohibit discrimination against
qualified individuals with disabilities in the provision of educational programs. For these purposes,
a “qualified individual with a disability” is defined as an individual with a disability who, with or
without reasonable modifications to policies or the provision of auxiliary aids and services meets the
essential eligibility requirements for the programs or activities. “Reasonable modifications” include
modifications in policies, practices or procedures when the modifications are necessary to afford service to individuals with disabilities unless the making of the modification would fundamentally alter
the nature of those goods or services. Modifications that create an undue burden for the institution
are not required.
The University’s Resource Office on Disabilities facilitates individual accommodations for students
with disabilities and serves as a resource by providing technical assistance, information and disability awareness training to those in the Yale Community. Contact the Office for more information at
432-2324 or visit website: http://yalecollege.yale.edu/student-services/resource-office-disabilities.
Federal and state laws and regulations, including building codes, also mandate that the University
meet certain construction requirements for new and renovated buildings that provide access to
individuals with disabilities. Certain barriers to access in existing buildings are to be removed where
such removal is easily accomplishable and able to be carried out without much difficulty or expense.
The Provost’s Advisory Committee on Resources for Students and Employees with Disabilities provides the University with advice and assistance in fulfilling its commitment to maintain an environment that is accessible and supportive of the work and scholarship of all students, faculty and staff.
Information about the Committee is available from the Office for Equal Opportunity Programs.

Aaron’s LightMainCharacterDescriptions
AARONLIVINGSTON. A handsome 23-year-old Michigan resident,
diagnosed with autism (ASD), who walks with a limp from a childhood
accident. His lifelong dream of becoming a student of the Yale School of
Architecture motivates a move to New Haven to prepare for the rigors
of an independent academic life. Aaron is shy and fearful, which makes
forming friendships with others difficult for him. He is very intelligent with
a photographic memory, and is very organized and neat—to some degree
a result of his obsessive compulsive disorder. He struggles with significant
anxiety, depression and severe stuttering, such that he is dependent on his
Dynavox (“talking computer”) for communication. It is unclear to us whether
that will always be the case. He is kind and thoughtful and seeks ways to
relate to others. His parents’ divorce and his father’s departure when he
was a child, make him believe that he is fundamentally unlovable. He is an
extraordinary illustrator and is passionate about architecture.
SHIRLEYSEARSLIVINGSTON(Annette Bening is preferred actor). A
61-year-old divorced woman, Michigan resident and mother to Aaron. She
is attractive and fit and always dresses neatly and conservatively. She is
intelligent, a prolific reader and a successful businesswoman who owns her
own bookstore. She is sociable and kind but not warm or affectionate. She
is practical, fastidious, hard-working and a devoted mother to her son. Her
doubts about Aaron’s diagnosis fuel her desire and efforts to help Aaron to
lead a full and “normal” life. She is controlling and opinionated but considers
her aggressiveness simply a necessary means of achieving the best outcome in
any situation.
RAFIATALPUR(Nandita Das). A 29-year-old beautiful Pakistani violinist
who is petite, and dresses in simple, attractive clothing. She grew up in New
York and moved to New Haven as a student of Yale School of Music, then
played professionally with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. She has
a close relationship with her mother, whose strong identification with their
culture compel Rafia to sacrifice some of her own needs and desires. Though
her parents are strongly religious, she is more drawn to spiritual concepts
than the doctrines of organized religion. Since her early teens she has been
dating exclusively and is engaged to an intelligent and very conservative
Pakistani American businessman. Both sets of parents strongly encourage
them to marry. Her sense of loyalty to her parents’ wishes keep Rafia in a
relationship that she intuitively knows is not right for her. She is always kind,
sensitive, honest and willing to listen without judgment.

At the young age of 18, well known Greenwich Village folk singer/song writer Randy
Burns, was already the opening act for some of the biggest names in folk music (Tom

went on to be the lead singer of Morning and later formed his own Sky Dog band that
was the house band at the legendary Troubadour in Los Angeles. He was the permanent
opening act at the Gaslight Cafe on MacDougal Street and also performed at the
Bitter End in Greenwich Village. Randy recorded several albums for Mercury and Polydor
Records along the way, while sharing the stage at the Hollywood Bowl with the Smothers

at The Castaways. He shared the stage with the Byrds, the Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell,
Ritchie Havens, Cream, Buffie Saint Marie, the J. Geils Band, Taj Mahal, and Paul
Butterfield. As Burns’ gained popularity and a loyal fan base, with his introspective lyrical folk songs about the human condition, critical acclaim began. “Vocally convincing,”
(New York Times), “Nobody but nobody sings anything like Randy Burns” (Rolling Stone
Magazine). “Randy’s voice is so intrinsically right that it wraps the listener in a pool of
contentment,” (Billboard Magazine). “Randy is the best country flavored rock singer
since Graham Parsons .” (Los Angeles Times). Randy started singing and writing in New
Haven before he went on to the Gaslight Cafe, and played at Yale many times – Silliman
College with Phil Ochs, Woolsey Hall with Cream; and all The Exit Coffee Houses from
Wall to Chapel Street. Randy Burns recorded a few songs backed up by the NY Philharmonic Orchestra, the most notable titled Christmas Lights, featured in the film. Randy
created the haunting, beautiful Title Song “Aaron’s Light” especially for this film.

“Aaron’sLight”FeatureFilmTestimonials
Nandita Das, Actor, Director, Producer, Social Activist
The story is very moving and interesting. The story also points out poignantly the insensitivity of common
people’s understanding of Autism. And this is a common thread beyond continents and countries so in
that sense this story becomes universal.
Chris Lemmon, Writer, Actor, Director
I think your film could be marvelous - and both Gina and I are very excited to be involved.
Randy Burns, Folk Singer/Song Writer
This project is a real inspiration to me. The title song is designed to be haunting and melodic....and beautiful as well. Worked hard on it (I just couldn’t wait to get going). I think this film making is an inspiration to
us all. And that is one cool presentation!
Bob Cabacoff, ”Controversial Campus” contribution to Yale’s Hidden Treasures website
The storyline video and presentation package are quite impressive. I need not tell you how the Latin term
Lux et Veritas (Light and Truth)“But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light...” immediately resonated when I saw it within the film’s presentation, albeit for two distinct but highly important reasons.
John Bockstoce, Yale Alum, Founder of Hotel Management Partners
Aaron’s Light is an incredible story, You were kind to ask for my feedback and all I can say is that it all
sounds fantastic. I would love to help in any way that I can.
Laurie Harkness, PhD, Clinical Professor in Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine
Yale’s fascinating architecture and sculpture illuminates the imagination and makes you wonder what stories
the creators were attempting to tell the future generations of leaders that were to walk Yale’s hallowed
grounds. “The stuff of movies!” Can’t wait to see them on the silver screen!
John Crowley, Writer, Yale Senior Lecturer
A movie featuring, among other things, the Gothic Stone Carvings! What a wonderful idea! The architect
of Gothic Yale not only copied the solemnities of the style, but the carnivalesque nose-thumbing as well.
Anyone who knows and loves Yale will have glimpsed a few of these -- and read the book that tells how
they got there and why.
Harold Miller, Principal in a New Haven Accounting Firm, Book Project Collaborator
My main interest is mostly funding humanitarian projects that make a difference in people’s lives and make
the world a little bit better place than when I found it. I believe this film will do just that.
Leah Shapiro, Owner of the Hotel Duncan in New Haven (a script location)
What a powerful story! And of course it’s a special thrill to have part of this movie filmed at our beloved
Hotel Duncan. I look forward to seeing it make a big impact world-wide.
Ellen Moriarty, Life/Career Coach; Daughter of Phil Moriarty, Yale’s Swimming/Diving coach (1950-1976)
This is a story which needs to be told and seen. The screenwriters’ mission, the characters, the storyline
and the gorgeous setting in New Haven, and in and around Yale University’s Gothic architecture will lend
beauty and inspiration to this compelling story of how we humans, with or without obvious disabilities,
strive and survive to reach our precious dreams.
