The tributes printed showed the major effects Isabell had on the breed itself as well as on individual breeders. These were written by long time well known breeders and were true tributes to this wonderful woman. My tribute shows another side to Isabell and goes back to the late 70s. We were breeding and showing whippets in Ohio on a small scale. My parents took our young teenage daughter Tami on a vacation trip to California. Tami asked me what I wanted for a souvenir. I smilingly told her to get me a picture of Charisma. When we first became involved in whippets I did all the research I could on the breed and had come to the conclusion that Carrie was my ideal. Tami took me at my word and called Isabell when they arrived in California and told her of her mission. Isabell very graciously invited her to her home where Tami did indeed get me pictures of Carrie as well as her lovely mother, son, and other Runners dogs. Christy, then a teen, set them up for her. Tami spent a beautiful afternoon with them and brought me more than I ever imagined possible. For Isabell to take the time to do this truly showed what fantastic woman she was. I will forever be grateful to her. In later years we met Isabell when she came east and later when we took our Windcroft's Lisa's Leading out to the Western specialty. We eventually acquired a Carrie grandson, Ch. Ravendune Misty Mor from Roberta Russ and Jerry Edwards, the son of a Carrie daughter. We found Isabell to be a warm, incredible woman with extraordinary knowledge of the breed. She has always occupied a special place in our hearts and will continue to do so. This page is a new method of social and informal communication between the club, its members and non-members alike. We invite all those who use to Facebook to visit the page and share your thoughts. Members of the AWC Board of Directors serve as administrators, and we hope that any of you Facebook users who have not visited (and “Liked”) the page will do so. We plan on posting information, updates and photos from American Whippet Club regional specialties and supported entries, and civil discussion of topics of interest to breeders and exhibitors (both AWC members and others) is encouraged. Because not all AWC members are Facebook users, this page is not intended for “formal” AWC business, but we hope that this page will help foster increased two-way communication 4 / THE WHIPPET NEWS - AUGUST 2013 SOUTHERN The time for the Southern is fast approaching and Christine Heath the new chair, is hard at work with lots of people volunteering to help. Presidents Report David reminded everyone to send in their Purina weight circles as we do receive a profit from them once a year. Those funds are used for judges education and other club expenses. This year the check was for $821 a little less than in the past but every little bit helps. This is David’s last year on the Board and he thanked everyone for their support. Secretary’s Report None Treasurer Report Gail Boyd provided copies of all accounts including all regional expenses. Balance is $43365.14. Harriett Lee asked about the expense for the website. Gail explained that we are developing a new website and that is what those expenses are for. 6 / THE WHIPPET NEWS - AUGUST 2013 Whippet Annual Report Wendy Clark was not present but the report will be published in the May issue of Whippet News. ROM Report Gail reported that there are 3 ROM sires, 3 ROMX sires, 3 ROM dams and 3 ROMX dams. Whippet Health Foundation Dr.Lisa Costello read the report written by Mary Beth Arthur. WHF subsidized the cost to owners who allowed the results to be posted in the WHF database. In 2012 105 dogs had CERF exams, this year there were 35. Last year 67 dogs were BAER tested and this year around 30. Last year was the cardiology study with 106 clearances, 3 rechecks and 31 seniors. This year we did 51 clearances. Dr. Kellihan is part of the team from Wisconsin and has volunteered to come each year and do the electrocardiograms for the national. The study ends next year but she will continue to do the exams for us in the future. Mary Beth wanted to thank everyone for their donations to the WHF and to recognize Treasurer Susan Bolduc, Secretary Jo Meister and Lisa Costello for all the time and effort she puts into the WHF. WHF is also going to try and develop a health survey in the coming year. Mary Alderman stated that she feels that we have PRA in the breed and encouraged everyone to send blood samples and verifiable pedigrees to Optigen. stand for recognition. They are selling logo pins from this year’s National also for sale. There is a Parade of Rescues on Friday evening with 20 dogs participating. All donations are tax deductible. David Samuelson will be taking over this endeavor from Mary Dukes. He reported that there are 21 people participating this year and he just did a judges seminar for 32 people in Kentucky. The power point presentation has been redone and a discussion regarding the Illustrated Standard will be held Friday evening in the Ballroom. Breeder Referral Lisa thanked Mary Downing for all her work. Mary reported that she gets about 12 inquiries a week and is adamant about asking people to visit local breeders. If you don’t want your name on Mary’s list please let her know. She will give website and email addresses as long as she knows they are valid. She does not give out phone numbers. Harriet Vincent stood to give Mary kudos for the work she does and the membership gave Mary a standing ovation. Expenses include $31,000 for professional help and sometimes WRAP helps elderly owners with care and food. Unfinished Business David reported that there was a member who was suspended but she has chosen not to renew her membership. We did recommend expulsion but without membership renewal, the issue is off the table. New Business Phoebe Booth made a motion that we consider adding a class at the National by splitting the 12-18 class into two classes. 12-15 and 15-18. Seconded by Harriett Lee. Approved. David welcomed new members Ryan Zienert, Krystal may wish to surf on over to the online mag Best In Show Daily, which features a weekly article from Bo, in addition to lots of other stuff of interest to we doggie folk. (http:// www.bestinshowdaily.com/?action=subscribe ) Hopefully, this August issue of the WN will be in your hot little hands a bit earlier than last month’s. Kathy and I tried an experiment, in the interest of cost-cutting, sending the print issues of the mag out via “Bulk Mail”, as opposed to the usual “First Class”. There was a significant cost savings, however, bulk mail obviously translates in plain English to “it will get there at some undetermined future date”, and as of this writing a few issues are still MIA, including mine (but I hear it looks great in print!). So, back to First Class mailing for the WN! Speaking of “hot”, it’s still summer out there across the US and I am sure that many of you are beating the heat by staying indoors reading the 2012 Annual. The Annual is another slam dunk by Wendy, and aren’t we incredibly lucky to have someone of her skills and altruistic bent to put together this encyclopedia of wonderful whippetness every year for us? This month’s WN brings several “cool” items. First up, results from the hot and rainy Midwest Specialty. Next, a very interesting international journey across the Whippet World, compiled by Bo Bengtson. By the way, if you are enjoying the articles that Bo is providing to the WN, you 8 / THE WHIPPET NEWS - AUGUST 2013 In the interest of continuing to get the WN back on track time-wise, I would like to remind you of the deadline for submission to each month’s issue. Boston is sired by Merci Isle Second Dawn, who was bred in the U.S. by Iva Kimmelman by Ch. Plumcreek Fortune Walking On Heir x Ch. Merci Isle Orient Express. His dam is Ch. American Champion wins UK Title That an American-bred Whippet becomes a champion in Great Britain is big news. Entries are much bigger over there, and usually only a dozen or so Whippets become champions each year. Only one single U.S. export has previously achieved this, and that was nearly a decade ago. Bengtson That was, perhaps, the most frequently asked question when the announcement was made for the 2014 AWC National. Hunt Valley? Never heard of it. What state? What’s so special about that place? Is it a great hotel? Are there good places to eat? When I’m not showing/coursing/doing agility/doing obedience, what else is there to do? Yes, lots of questions asked. The answers to these and many more questions will be unveiled over the next several months. Hunt Valley is located in the rolling hills of northern Baltimore County, home of many thoroughbred horse farms. Hunt clubs abound, and if you listen carefully, you may hear the baying of the hounds as they pursue the fox through the fields. We are also host to the prestigious Maryland Hunt Cup every year, one of the most difficult steeple chases in the world. Only several miles from the hotel, it will take place on April 26, 2014. Yes, while we are conducting our BOB competition, the horses will be clearing 22 timber fences over a four mile stretch. So, although Hunt Valley is less than 20 miles from Baltimore City, you are in ‘the country’. Our host hotel is The Hunt Valley Inn. They are working with us, hand in glove, to ensure this will be one of the best nationals ever!! Conveniently located off I-83, you will be minutes from restaurants, parks, malls, and anything else you may need. There is ample green space surrounding the hotel for short walks and pottying the whippets. The hotel boasts Cinnamon Tree restaurant, Hunt Cafe, and Paddock Bar. For the physical types, there is a state-of-the-art fitness room and indoor pool. If you’re into jogging or biking your dogs, the NCR (Northern Central Railroad) Trail is 2 miles away, and offers 20 miles of trail with a stone dust surface. It begins in Hunt Valley and ends at the Maryland/Pennsylvania line. If you prefer, Oregon Ridge Park is minutes in the opposite direction, with trails that meander through woods, fields, and streams. As we await the completion of the new AWC website, please check our Facebook page for any new or changed information. Rest assured, we have a wonderful group of volunteers in place, working very hard behind the scenes to guarantee you and your whippets a smooth, stress-free national. Remember, lure coursing is about 2 miles from the hotel, agility is in a new, great location, and WHIPPET IDOL will return!!!!!!!!! Mark your calendars for the week of April 20th, and join us in Maryland for a truly memorable week with whippets! My initial panic about taking over this position has been alleviated by the willingness of our Executive Committee and the Sub- Committee members to step up and offer their energy and expertise in filling important "slots". The major jobs are: Printing - Catalogues Mary Jean Odron Raffle Rachel Gongre Fund Raising Jane Cooney-Waterhouse Judges Liaison Patti Fitzgerald Treasurer Brad Briscoe Rosettes Gail Boyd Music Stephanie Dycha Trophies & Pins Angie Diehl Decor & Setup Debbie Davenport & Harriet Vincent We are already hard at work so that the 2014 Top Twenty will be better than ever. Due to the smaller attendance at this year's National and the rising costs of materials and services, we are in a worrisome financial situation. We are relying on the generosity of our membership and previous sponsors - in addition to our committee members' creative thinking and fresh ideas - to solve our fiscal shortfall and hopefully enable us to come out in the black at the end of the National week. I want to express thanks to Linda Waggoner for sharing her files and for answering my many, many questions; her shoes are going to be very hard to fill. Linda and her Top Twenty team have set the bar very high and we appreciate all the hard work that they did in past years. Going forward, we welcome positive suggestions - and, of course, any offers of help - and encourage anyone with time and energy to join us in forging a wonderful Top Twenty this year. Harriet Vincent AUGUST 2013 - THE WHIPPET NEWS / 27 The White Whippet Squatted on their bunkers at the corner of the street outside 'The Pewter Pigeon' a knot of pitmen sat waiting for the doors to open, cursing the raw sleet, or muttering with husky throats dully of this and that. When suddenly within the ring of street lamps gusty flame out of the stormy shadows of the black November night, like a little slip of moonshine a snow white whippet came and stayed one breathless moment before their startled sight. Speechlessly they gazed upon her as she stood with a lifted paw, clean limbed, with quivering muzzle and jetty eyes agleam, nor heard the doors swing open wide as each lad looked with awe one moment on the vision of his own heart's secret dream Author Unknown 28 / THE WHIPPET NEWS - AUGUST 2013 AUGUST 2013 - THE WHIPPET NEWS / 29 Rank Dog Name Owner Average Qualifying Score Adv A 1 Delcielo Solar Star Marrianne Lu 92 2 2 Kettle Cove N Hamrya Leaping Lily Sandra Holley 90.5 2 3 Galewind's Life Of Reilly Nancy Anderson 86 1 4 Charlemagne Jomyr Vanilla Coke Donna Pardi 85.67 3 5 Summit Start Me Up Karen Hilfiker 81.5 2 6 Ziggy Stardust Of Wyndsor Ulysses James 77 1 1 Ziggy Stardust Of Wyndsor Ulysses James 97 2 2 Shaldra's American Eclipse Cheryl Manson 95 1 3 Mariki's La Dolce Vita Cu Liath Martha Cardassi 94 1 4 Affinity Full Circle To Karamac Carol Mc Dermott 93.5 2 5 Autumn Sweet Pickle Lorain M Abel 91 1 6 Longrun's Moonlight Mile Annie Whitney 88.33 3 7 Mystic Run's Here Comes The Sun Annie L Andrews 85.5 2 8 Tru-Luv's Goodnite Mrs Calabash Mickey Rubin 83 3 9 Vitesse Deep Powder Dr. Lisa M Costello 76 1 SARAH E FILIPIAK 72 1 1 Kemar's Love Torn Kaye Martell 95 2 2 Timbreblue's Mysterious Dream Warrior Diana Cognigni 94.83 6 3 Wheatland Talltree Lee Hayes 94.67 6 4 Windryder's Full Throttle Roberta S Lutz 94 2 5 Mariki's La Dolce Vita Cu Liath Martha Cardassi 93.5 8 6 Tnt's La Femme Nikita Roberta S Lutz 88.75 4 7 Hasue Here Comes Trouble Susan Mullins 84.5 2 1 Krislyn Cat Man Do Joanne Cook 91.5 2 2 Kemar's Love Torn Kaye Martell 84.33 3 1 Saesi Inked Is This Love Susan Mullins 97 1 2 Charlemagne Jomyr Vanilla Coke Donna Pardi 90 1 3 Shamasan Who's That Lady PHOEBE DEGOL 88.5 2 4 Shojin's I Wanna Be Your Dog Charlotte Pond 88 1 5 Affinity Full Circle To Karamac Carol Mc Dermott 85 2 Laura A Hagey 81 2 Connie Austin 80 1 99.33 3 Adv B 10 Fanfare's Crazy Train RAE Exc A Exc B Summit Ironwood Farrahst Of Them All 7 Wegner's On The Sly 30 / THE WHIPPET NEWS - AUGUST 2013 Nov A 1 Shaldra's American Eclipse Cheryl Manson AUGUST 2013 - THE WHIPPET NEWS / 31 The Whippet News Guin Borstel, Editor 4745 25th Street San Francisco, CA 94114 Gunther the Cat & Mason Meyer show off their best effort at toppling “Grumpy Cat” from the internet meme rankings.
