16 Sensational Things to Do
in Talbot County This Year
1
Walk the Hill
The Hill Community Project
has uncovered one of the
most intriguing storylines to
emerge from Talbot County in recent
memory. Researchers have sifted through
genealogical material, land records and
even the ground itself to discover that
The Hill Community in Easton is one of
the nation’s oldest free African American
communities still in existence today.
Many modern-day residents are direct
descendants of the original inhabitants.
Archaeologists from the University of
Maryland and students from Morgan State
University will dig again this summer from
June 20 to July 8—and they want you!
To get your hands dirty and help
uncover history, email [email protected].
An Archaeology on the Hill self-guided
walking tour is also available online at
www.TourTalbot.org and the Visitor Center
at 11 S. Harrison Street in Easton. Guided
walking tours can be scheduled by

CATCH A STARR
This spring, a collection of
original paintings returns to
the area that inspired them,
in Ruth Starr Rose, Revelations of African
American Life in Maryland and the World,
an exhibition at the Waterfowl Building in
Easton. A white woman who graduated
from Vassar and studied at the New York
Art Students League before returning to
the Shore, Rose created paintings of African
American life in the Copperville and
Unionville communities through the first
half of the 20th century. Her works include
scenes of Eastern Shore life and labor, visual
depictions of Negro spirituals, and images
of military heroes. The show is free and
open to the public April 30 through June
19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. When it
leaves Easton, the show will begin a world
tour that runs through 2020 and includes
destinations such as Paris. In case you miss
this roving exhibition, Rose is also
celebrated at the Talbot Historical
Society Museum at 30 S. Washington St.
in Easton along with other Talbot County
notables (www.hstc.org).

paint talbot
Artists flock to Talbot County,
where inspiration abounds and
the settings are serene. It’s a
hidden gem with world-class paintings,
sculpture and more. Each year, the town of
Oxford hosts a juried fine arts show & sale
in their Community Center; this year’s event
takes place May 21-22 (www.oxfordcc.org).
Over in St. Michaels, where art galleries are
around every corner, the St. Michaels Art
League (www.smartleague.org) hosts events
each month to support and highlight their
creative community—including the annual
Labor Day Art Show. And Easton might be
the leader of the pack, the cultural epicenter,
with large-scale arts events throughout
the year. The internationally acclaimed Plein
Air Easton Competition and Art Festival
(www.pleinaireaston.com) is the largest and
most prestigious juried outdoor painting
competition in the country. From July 9-17,
the festival will host 58 juried artists from
across the country—and almost 200
more for the “quick draw” competition.
Thousands more visitors will come for
lectures, workshops, exhibitions and other
events throughout Talbot County before the
festival’s exhibition and sale.

Muster at the Museum
There are museums in Talbot
County for just about every
interest. Perhaps the area’s
biggest—and a nationally renowned one
at that—is the Chesapeake Bay Maritime
Museum (www.cbmm.org), where visitors
explore maritime history and culture. Stay
for the day and enjoy a picnic lunch
at the water’s edge on the CBMM
campus; stroll the grounds and take
a peek at the working boatyard to see the
Museum’s latest restoration project.
The Academy Art Museum in Easton
(www.academyartmuseum.org) enhances
the cultural life on the Eastern Shore
through its expanding collection, everchanging exhibitions and an expansive
class schedule. The building at 106 South
St. is a historic landmark and houses
exhibition space, a performing arts
auditorium, an outdoor sculpture garden
and studios for everything from dance to
digital design. All of Talbot County’s smaller
museums are open the first Saturday of the
month from May through November in
addition to their regular hours.

Tune In for
Live Music
There’s no shortage of arts
and culture in Talbot County,
which is home to an engaging live music
scene. The Historic Avalon Theatre in
Easton, including its 60-seat Stoltz
Listening Room, plays host to an everchanging lineup of top talent as well
as a series of summer street concerts
(www.avalonfoundation.org). The 31st
Annual Chamber Music Festival brings
classical music to venues all around Easton,
June 5-19. And for world-class jazz, check
out the annual Monty Alexander Jazz
Festival (www.chesapeakemusic.org) Sept.
2-4 at the Avalon Theatre. In St. Michaels,
the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum
(www.cbmm.org) hosts live music at many
of its festivals throughout the year, and the
town of Oxford offers live performances
in the park on the second Sunday
of the month throughout the summer
(www.portofoxford.com).

FIND A FARMER
From summer squash to
sweet corn, our Farmer’s
Markets in Easton and St.
Michaels are full of great finds—the one
in Easton was named Best Farmer’s
Market by What’s Up? Eastern Shore
magazine! If you want to visit a local
farmer straight at the source, check out
the produce (and the pumpkin patch,
if it’s in season) at Councell Farms (www.
councellfarms.com) just north of Easton on

Ride a Historic Skipjack
The sloop-rigged skipjack
Rebecca T. Ruark turns 130
years old in 2016. Built in
Taylor’s Island, Maryland, in 1886, she’s
the oldest skipjack in the Chesapeake
Fleet, and was designated as a National
Historic Landmark in 2003. Visitors can
catch a ride on the Rebecca at her
homeport in Tilghman Island’s Dogwood
Harbor. Captain Wade Murphy Jr. is an
American original who’ll give you a tour
you won’t forget (410-829-3976). Looking
for more? The Hilda Willing, also on

Route 50. To pick your own strawberries
and pumpkins, head to Family Affair
Farm (www.familyaffairfarm.wix.com) in
the spring or fall. For a creamy-delicious
treat, check out the raw milk and
pasteurized cheeses, farm fresh yogurts,
and more at Chapel’s Country Creamery
(www.chapelscreamery.com). Swing by the
Wye Grist Mill (www.oldwyemill.org) in
the unincorporated community of Wye
Mills for freshly ground corn meal or grits.
Tilghman Island, offers two-hour tours
by appointment (410-924-9975). The
authentic working skipjack H.M. Krentz,
first launched in 1955, picks up passengers
daily in St. Michaels for tours of the Miles
River or can be chartered for picnics and
cocktail cruises (oystercatcher.com). This
summer, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime
Museum is hosting a series of model
skipjack races—and if the timing is right,
they may just have a historic skipjack
under restoration in their working
boatyard. (www.cbmm.org)

Rally with the Watermen
Waterman’s Appreciation
Day is one of the biggest
celebrations on the Shore,
and this year’s promises to be one of the
best yet. Adding to the list of regularly
scheduled events, including the docking
contest and live music, is a buy boat
reunion. Historically, watermen fished so
far off the coast that it wasn’t efficient
for them to deliver the day’s catch
themselves. So-called buy boats would
play the middlemen, buying the seafood
from the watermen’s boats and delivering
it to the shore. Buy boats are out of
commission now, but are still historic
treasures of the Bay. This year, they’ll
reunite in Talbot County, and visitors
can tour them and even take a ride. The
reunion (Aug. 11-14) coincides with
Waterman’s Appreciation Day (Aug. 14).
If you can’t make it to the festival, don’t
fret: You can catch a ride on the Winnie
Estelle from the Chesapeake Bay Maritime
Museum anytime (www.cbmm.org).

GET OUT ON
THE WATER
If the Winnie Estelle or the
working skipjacks don’t strike
your fancy, there are plenty of other ways
to get on the water in Talbot County. The
Patriot is a two-level, 149-passenger
replica of an early 1930s steam ferry.
Cruise along the Miles River with all the
creature comforts of a modern vessel
(www.patriotcruises.com). If you prefer to
sail, The Selina II in St. Michaels offers
intimate sunset Champagne cruises
(www.sailselina.com), and down the road,
The Lady Patty offers classic yacht charters
from Tilghman Island (www.ladypatty.com).
Or board the M/V Sharps Island, also on
Tilghman Island, to tour the lighthouses
of the Chesapeake Bay (www.chesapeake
lights.com). The Oxford Bellevue Ferry
(www.oxfordbellevueferry.com), America’s oldest
privately owned ferry route in operation
since 1683, transports passengers, cars and
even bikes across the Tred Avon River.

Pound the
Pavement
There may be no better
places to strap on your
running shoes than our small towns—and
we aren’t the only ones who think so.
More than 2,500 runners come out each
year to enjoy the scenic, flat trails of the
St. Michaels Running Festival (www.
runstm.com). Iron Man competitors even
come here to train—the terrain is
consistent, and the views can’t be beat.
Prefer to run alone? There’s plenty of time
and space for that, too. Follow our bike
map—we’ll get to those in a minute—or,
for something with a little more spunk,
check out TriCycle & Run’s monthly 5k in
St. Michaels; see www.tricycleandrun.com
for fun you don’t want to miss.

Bike the Trails
If bicycling is more your

in May. And each year, our local
riverkeepers host the Ride for
Clean Rivers, (www.rideforcleanrivers.

starts in Wye Mills on Sept. 18. If you’re
feeling spontaneous, hit the streets from
wherever you are and make your own

Add Some Sizzle
Talbot County is known
for its extensive menus
of generations-old family
seafood recipes and ingredients brought
forth from the Chesapeake Bay. But
recently in Talbot County we’ve seen
a new culinary phenomenon: killer
barbecue. In Easton, check out chef
Andrew Evans’ award-winning pickin’s at
15
The BBQ Joint (www.andrewevans
bbqjoint.com), or grab some brisket at Hot
Off the Coals (www.hotoffthecoals.com).
In St. Michaels, cruise down Talbot Street
toward Shore Barbecue & Seafood
Company (www.shorebbq.com). And in
Trappe, check out the newest addition
to the barbecue battalion at Talbot
Smokehouse (www.talbotsmokehouse.com).
Shop ‘Til You Drop
Don’t let our small town
vibe fool you—for those
who seek it, there’s plenty
of style all around Talbot County.
From one-of-a-kind boutiques to lavish
jewelry stores, even the most discerning
fashionista can get lost in our stylish
shops. But fashion is just one tiny part
of shopping here—you’ll find plenty

Celebrate
the Season
There’s no place like Talbot
County during the holiday
season, with each town boasting its own
parades, festivals and traditions galore. The
annual Waterfowl Festival, now in its
46th year, kicks off the holiday season
the second weekend in November
(www.waterfowlfestival.org), and the fun
continues right through the New Year.
From Tilghman Island’s famous lighting
of the Great Crab Pot Tree to St.
Michaels Midnight Madness where
local shops stay open until midnight
for holiday shoppers, Talbot County
towns know how to celebrate. The party
continues with Easton’s Christmas parade
(www.discovereaston.com), Oxford’s Christmas
on the Creek (www.portofoxford.com),
and Christmas in St. Michaels (www.
christmasinstmichaels.org). Talbot County
rings in the New Year with a family-friendly
First Night Celebration and Crab Drop in
Easton (www.easternshore.com/firstnighttalbot).
County on the Big Screen
Have you ever been on a vacation and thought the scene looked like something out of a movie? In Talbot County,
it very well could be! Look for scenes of Talbot County in the movie Jackie, filmed in March 2016 and coming out
in 2017, starring Natalie Portman as beloved American icon and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Other movies
filmed here include Failure to Launch, Wedding Crashers, Swimmers, First Kiss, Guarding Tess and Clara’s Heart.

WHAT’s LOCAL?
Here on the Chesapeake Bay, we’re best known for three things:
Chesapeake Bay blue crabs, oysters and rockfish (also known as striped
bass). You won’t find them fresher anywhere else. The Bay is also home
to dozens of other delicious fish including black drum, white perch,
croaker and flounder. Our local chefs prepare them in ways ranging
from classic to creative—and just plain steaming or frying is always
an option.
WHAT’s IN SEASON?
Blue crabs are in season April through October. They’re most
popular by far in the summer months, but many locals swear by
the plumped-up crabs of the fall. Rockfish season is much longer,
opening in mid-April and lingering through December. For oysters,
the old wives’ tale suggests the “R” rule—indulging only in months
with an “R,” meaning September, October, November, December,
January, February, March and April. The season officially runs
October 1 through March 31.
What’s that red stuff?
That’s Old Bay seasoning, which has been made in Baltimore for
more than 75 years by McCormick & Co. Steamed crabs are often
covered in Old Bay. This zesty powder can also spice up king crabs,
mussels and shrimp. But to answer the common question: No, those
particular sea creatures aren’t native to this area.
What should we order?
Dig into a bushel of crabs steamed and dusted generously with
Old Bay, and served with drawn butter or vinegar if you’re feeling
adventuresome (the jury is out on whether butter or vinegar is more
traditional). Order a dozen raw, freshly shucked oysters on the half
shell. You can slurp them straight from the shell or plop them on a
cracker and top them with horseradish, cocktail sauce and a squeeze
of lemon. Or opt for rockfish cooked up any which way.
Local chefs have been incorporating these delectable treats
into distinctive dishes for decades. For a little taste of crab, try a
vegetable crab soup, a cream of crab soup topped with a little
sherry, crab dip (typically including sour cream or cream cheese
and served with toast), or crab imperial atop any number
of entrees.
Crab cakes, broiled or fried, are a local favorite, with nearly every
restaurant in town vying for the title of best. (Hint: The true
contenders usually feature especially delicious seasoning, plenty of
lump meat and little filler.) Oyster preparations include cooked
dishes like oysters Rockefeller, and for those feeling especially
adventuresome, oyster shooters. These come in a variety of ways,
but perhaps the most approachable is a raw oyster slipped into a
mini Bloody Mary, or just some beer or vodka with cocktail sauce,
and downed like a shot.
As for fresh local fish, you really can’t go wrong—just ask your server
for details on the chef’s specialty. You won’t be disappointed.

"A place to

If you’d prefer to leave the cooking to the pros, we have a
gracious plenty when it comes to restaurants. Almost all of
ours offer seafood in some capacity. But if it’s specifically seafood
you’re seeking, we recommend checking out the restaurants that
specialize in it (many have crab or Chesapeake in their name!).
If you’re up for preparing a meal yourself, or if you’re looking for

Easton, Oxford, St. Michaels, Tilghman Island and Trappe are our main
destinations, each with unique features that make Talbot County a hub for the
arts, history, maritime heritage, eating and shopping.
Just about 90 minutes from both Baltimore and Washington, Talbot County
towns make for the perfect Chesapeake Bay escape—they’re destinations for
relaxation and exploration. It’s easy to navigate from one to the next, dining,
discovering the local flavor, attending concerts and festivals and admiring the
600 miles of picturesque shoreline.

EASTON
Located just off of Route 50, Easton is the county seat
and our epicenter of culture. Its world-class Academy Art
Museum (www.academyartmuseum.org), Historic Avalon
Theatre (www.avalonfoundation.org), renowned art
galleries, boutiques, fine-dining restaurants, coffee shops,
boutiques and seasonal events lure visitors from far and
wide. Easton welcomes international artists, musicians
and tourists with carefully curated and award-winning
festivals—there’s no question why it’s been named one
of the Top 100 Small Arts Communities in America.
TourTalbot.org | 410-770-8000
The headwaters of the Tred Avon River start as just
a trickle outside Easton and lead directly to Oxford,
a maritime community with water on three sides.
One of the oldest towns in America, it was one of the
first ports in the state of Maryland, and boats still
sometimes outnumber cars. The Oxford-Bellevue ferry
(www.oxfordbellevueferry.com), a fun way for visitors to get
out on the water, is the oldest privately owned ferry in the
country. Oxford offers the charm of a quaint, historic town
with superb restaurants, plenty of room for a stroll—and
one of the country’s top handmade ice cream parlors!

You Say Talbot,
I Say...
ST. MICHAELS
Just 10 miles from Easton on Route 33, St. Michaels
sits on the Miles River and prides itself on its maritime
heritage. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum
(www.cbmm.org) highlights the area’s rich history
and offers both educational exhibits and some of the
Shore’s most anticipated festivals and events. It’s home
to its own brewery (www.easternshorebrewing.com),
winery (www.st-michaels-winery.com) and distillery
(www.lyondistilling.com). Highly acclaimed restaurants,
one-of-a-kind shops, and some of the area’s best
shopping will leave you lingering. But its bike trails
and easy water access will make you want to wander.
TRAPPE
Route 50 cuts directly through Trappe, a tiny town
on the rise. In addition to a bookstore and quilt shop,
notable restaurants give visitors tasty reasons to stop.
Trappe’s Bill Burton Fishing Pier (www.tourtalbot.org/
businesses/bill-burton-fishing-pier-state-park) is a draw for
local visitors and a welcome respite for travelers every day
of the year. Stretch your legs with a walk along the pier,
cast a line for an afternoon of fishing, enjoy a picnic lunch
or explore the adjacent walking and biking trails along
with your pets.
16
Talbot County Travel Guide
The correct pronunciation
for the county name is TALLbut, likely a reflection of the
area’s British roots. Talbot
County was named for
Lady Grace Talbot, sister of
the second Lord Baltimore,
Maryland’s first proprietary
governor and namesake of
the state’s largest city.
TILGHMAN ISLAND
Past St. Michaels, off the beaten path at the end of a
peninsula on the Bay, Tilghman Island is watermen’s
country. Probably the most low-key town in the county,
it offers local seafood, scenic views and a friendly feel
year-round. Tilghman Island is also well known for its
Seafood Festival and Tilghman Day (www.tilghmanmd.com).
Looking for a little adventure? Rent a kayak and hit the
newly designated water trails. Launch sites are easily
accessible and the trails can offer a day full of exploration.

ARTS & CULTURE
Easton
Academy Art Museum
One of Easton’s most historic buildings serves
the art and artists of the past, present and
future. Changing exhibitions and classes for
creators of all ages and skill levels make this
an invaluable resource for Shore residents and
visitors. The permanent collection includes
works in a wide range of media, including
20th- and 21st-century American paintings,
prints, photography and sculpture. Programs
range from lessons in life drawing to digital art
instruction, plus lunchtime and cocktail hour
concerts, lectures and special art events.

Historic Avalon Theatre
For nearly a century, the Avalon Theatre has
brought the best in the performing arts and
film to the Eastern Shore. Today, artists like
Bela Fleck, Mavis Staples, and Rusted Root
share a busy calendar with HD broadcasts
live from the Metropolitan Opera. The
60-seat Stoltz Listening Room also presents
performers in an intimate cabaret setting. In
addition to more than 150 shows each year,
the Avalon Foundation is also responsible for
the Easton Farmers Market, the Plein Air Easton
Competition and Arts Festival, outdoor street
concerts, summer camps and Easton’s 4th of
July Carnival.

Frederick Douglass Statue
The autobiography of this great American
begins: “I was born in Tuckahoe, near
Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from
Easton, in Talbot County, Maryland.” We
celebrate Frederick Douglass here in his
birthplace and honor him with a statue at the
Talbot County Courthouse and in programs
throughout the year, including Frederick
Douglass Day in September and the annual
Juneteenth celebration of abolition. A selfguided driving tour, available at the Historical
Society or the Visitor Center, lets you trace the
journey of this American hero.

Gas Plant Memorial
Easton was one of the first American towns
to have gas-powered street lamps. Today, a
memorial sits on the site of the 1860 factory
that converted coal to natural gas. The curved
bench under the flag stand is an excellent place
to stop and rest during a walking tour.
Dover and West St., Easton
Merchant Marine Memorial (MEBA)
Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Museum
Merchant mariners have served since the
American Revolution and perished at a greater
rate in World War II than those in the other
military branches. The MEBA Merchant Marine
Memorial pays tribute to fallen seafarers, their
friends and families, and the maritime industry
as a whole. See a huge propeller and a Sept. 11
memorial including steel fragments from the
World Trade Center.
This 70-acre facility houses an impressive
collection of vintage industrial machinery
and agricultural equipment, all in working
condition, and displayed in a dozen buildings
around the property. The Rural Life Museum
contains a general store and farmhouse
kitchen, while a Machine Shop Museum
displays early 20th century lineshaft-driven
machine tools. Other buildings feature gas and
oil engines, steam engines, and antique farm
equipment. There’s also a working saw mill and
a Plymouth industrial locomotive. Open during
special events, including the annual Steam &
Gas Show, and the first Saturday of the month,
May-Nov.

Museum & Gardens
The Historical Society collects, preserves, and
interprets the material and cultural history
of our county. The museum itself features
more than 1,000 photos from the society’s
world-class collection, as well as priceless
artifacts. Outdoors, the award-winning gardens
showcase mature boxwood, a terraced shade
garden, an herb garden, fully established
perennial beds, and fruit and flowering
trees. A retail and consignment shop offers
both antique and modern housewares and
accessories so visitors can take some history
home with them.

Third Haven Friends Meeting
Since 1684, members of the Religious Society
of Friends, also known as Quakers, have met in
what is now one of the oldest frame houses of
worship in the U.S. During the winter months,
the congregation gathers in the Brick Meeting
House, a Greek Revival building from 1880. In
addition to twice-weekly meetings, they also
hold regular peace vigils. Old-growth trees
and a historic cemetery can be found on the
grounds. For guided tours, contact 3rdhaven@

John Wesley Church & Nellie Brooks
Leatherberry African American
Museum
Thirty-one white and 26 black congregants
worshipped together for generations in this
little church, an unassuming one-room building
without a steeple or indoor plumbing. In the
early days, wives sold food in the back. A John
Wesley activist, Nellie Leatherberry, finagled a
way to have a 9’ x 12’ “cook shop” constructed;
it nearly tripled in size and operated until the
late 1970s. Nellie’s Cook Shop now houses the
church’s fascinating documentary photography
and oral history transcriptions.

Oxford-Bellevue Ferry
Believed to be America’s oldest privately owned
ferry, the Oxford-Bellevue route was officially
established in 1683, with power supplied
at times by sail, sculling, rowing, steam and
modern diesel engine. Plying the waters of the
Tred Avon River between Oxford and Bellevue
on Maryland’s Eastern Shore from mid-April
through mid-November, it operates seven days
a week for most of the season but weekendsonly in November.

The Oxford Museum
This hometown museum preserves and displays
Oxford’s nearly 350 years of colonial and
American history, and maintains a collection of
more than 2,500 artifacts and memorabilia. The
collection represents the evolution of Oxford,
from one of the country’s earliest colonial ports
through the modern era, and its status as a
premier sailing destination. Exhibits change
regularly and periodic lectures and tours are
offered. It opens on Oxford Day in late April
and is open through mid-November.

River, plus annual festivals, celebrate Bay
culture, boats, seafood, and history. The

Phillips Wharf Environmental Center
Classic Motor Museum of St. Michaels
Tilghman Island is unique—and this museum
was created to capture its distinctive culture
and colorful heritage through collections
of oral history, art, and artifacts. Telling the
island’s story both enriches the community
and gives future generations a glimpse of
what those who grew up here called “Paradise.”
Open April through November on Saturday and
Sunday, and by appointment.
This non-profit organization provides hands-on
experiences, especially for children, with the
animals and plants that inhabit the Chesapeake
Bay region. In addition to learning about the
environment, visitors also learn how watermen
harvest the Bay’s bountiful resources. This
is also a great place to launch your kayak or
watch the boats go by. Phillips Wharf sits in
the shadow of the Tilghman Island drawbridge,
right on Knapps Narrows.

by land
Talbot County is on the Eastern
Shore of the Chesapeake Bay,
east-southeast of Washington, D.C.
We’re approximately 90 minutes from
both Baltimore and Washington, but
travelers must cross the 4.3-mile-long
Chesapeake Bay Bridge outside
Annapolis, the longest continuous
over-water structure in the world.
From the bridge, just follow U.S.
Route 50, the Eastern Shore’s main
thoroughfare, which runs right
through the heart of Talbot County.

By Water
With more than 600 miles of
shoreline, Talbot County is a boater’s
paradise. Not only does the western
edge of the county touch the
Chesapeake Bay, but five major
rivers—the Wye, Miles, Tred Avon,
Choptank and Tuckhoe—either
border or run through the county.
And when you get here, we have
many boatyards and marinas to
service your needs, from fuel and
supplies to docking and repairs—or
just hanging out with fellow skippers.
By Air
Though there’s no commercial air
service, Easton/Newnam Field Airport
(ESN) provides access for aviation
enthusiasts, corporate pilots and
local businesses. Constructed for use
by the military during World War II,
today Easton Airport is one of the
busiest general aviation facilities in
Maryland, linking Talbot County to
the entire country and to the world.
The airport is just two miles north
of downtown Easton. To learn more,
