2016 Helen Keller Festival Brochure
The birth and early life of Helen Adams
Keller was not particularly significant as
she was born a normal child to Captain
Arthur Keller and his wife. She was a
descendent of prominent people but
that did not make her special. It was not
until she was nineteen months of age
that her life and the lives of thousands of
others to follow would be impacted by a
series of remarkable events. At
nineteen months, Helen contracted a
high fever and her life became one of darkness as she lost the ability to hear, see and
speak. Those around Helen were quick to assume that her mental capacity was
affected and she became a child ignored in many ways including the need for
discipline.
When Helen was almost seven years old, Anne Sullivan came to Tuscumbia to be her
teacher. Miss Sullivan was only twenty years old and a graduate of Perkins Institute
for the Blind. She was stricken by blindness as a child but through a series of
operations, had regained partial sight. From that day in March 1887, the two became
inseparable until Anne died in 1936. The miracle of communications is attributed both
to Anne’s stubbornness and commitment to her task and Helen’s intellectual capacity
and self-motivation. The famous pump scene where the miracle took place is a
popular stopping place for visitors from throughout the world and is the centerpiece of
William Gibson’s play, The Miracle Worker, which is performed each summer on the
grounds of the Keller home.
From that miracle, Helen Keller went on to become a great and effective
spokesperson for deaf and blind causes, not only in the United States, but throughout
the world. Miss Keller was the first deaf/blind person to graduate from college,
receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude in 1903. Although this was the end of
her formal schooling, she received honorary doctoral degrees from Temple University
and Harvard University and from the Universities of Glasgow, Scotland, Berlin,
Germany; Delhi, India; and Witwaters and Johannesburg, South Africa.
While a student at Radcliffe, Helen began a literary career which would continue for
50 years. In 1902, “The Story of My Life” appeared in book form and would be
translated into more than 50 languages. An extremely versatile woman, she would
later perform in motion picture films. Miss Keller’s film biography won an “Oscar” from
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1955. Her friends were actors,
inventors, presidents and other world leaders. Her friend, Mark Twain, said, “The two
most interesting characters of the 19th century are Napoleon and Helen Keller”. Miss
Keller inspired Lions International to involvement in their renowned sight program
and she worked as a staff member for the American Foundation for the Blind.
Her birthplace, “Ivy Green”, was made a permanent shrine in 1954.
She died on June 1, 1968 just a few weeks short of her 88th birthday.
The Helen Keller Festival began in 1979 as a tribute to the life of Helen Keller.

Award Of Courage
Reagan McBride was born in 2005 with
Osteogenesis Imperfecta, brittle bone
disease. She doesn't like to say she has a
disability, but rather a "differability"! A
great attitude is what it's all about! An
event named "Shine Your Way" was
created by a family friend, Tiffany Smart,
to honor Reagan's life. Proceeds from the
annual event, usually held the first
Sunday in May at LPC, go to help families
of children with medical needs by
providing funds for travel expenses, food and hotel accommodations
during hospital stays. Reagan is such an inspiration to all who meet
her!

Darren J. Butler is an author, stage director, film
director, acting coach, writing specialist,
storyteller, and motivational speaker.
In 1999, Darren took over The Miracle Worker at
Ivy Green as the Resident Director of the play.
Almost immediately, he reached out to
playwright, William Gibson, and the two forged a
friendship through email, phone calls, and a visit
to his home in Stockbridge, Massachusetts in
2001. Gibson, along with the original director of the Broadway
production, Arthur Penn guided Darren on his goal to make the
“homefront” production of The Miracle Worker an unforgettable
experience. Each year, Darren loves directing the play and working
with the campers at Camp Courage.
Butler is a co-founder of Virtual Village Classroom. As a writing
specialist working in schools for over fifteen years, Butler developed
The Process of Writing and The Process of Close Reading which
helped Alabama schools on the Alabama Direct Assessment on
Writing as well as the ARMT.
Butler is the playwright behind many original plays and musicals as
well as adaptions. In 2006, he partnered with award winning song
writer and vocalist Judy Rodman of Nashville to write Runaway Home
and We The People. For twenty years, Butler was the Artistic Director
for The Backstage Theatre Company, a professional family theatre
organization. In addition to serving as Resident Director of The Miracle
Worker at Ivy Green, Butler also serves as Artistic Director of Time Out
For Theatre, for TVAA. As a director and acting coach, Butler’s

FRIDAY, JUNE 24
"There's no higher goal I could set for myself than to help other people
find some happiness and gratitude in their lives.”
Paul Thorn
Paul Thorn was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin but raised in Tupelo, Mississippi
after a family move when he was an infant. At age 17 Thorn met songwriter Billy
Maddox, who became his friend and mentor. It would take several detours –
working in a furniture factory, boxing, jumping out of airplanes-until Thorn
committed to the singer-songwriter's life. Through it all they remained friends,
and Maddox became Thorn's songwriting partner and co-producer.
As a professional boxer he won the Mid-South Middleweight Championship in
Memphis, TN and a nationally-televised bout with former world champion
Roberto Durán. While working in a Tupelo furniture factory and playing in
local clubs he was discovered by music professional Miles Copeland (brother
of The Police drummer Stewart Copeland). Paul was subsequently signed to a
recording contract with A&M Records and recorded his first album, Hammer &
Nail, in 1997. He left A&M soon after and followed Hammer & Nail with thirteen
more albums.
Paul Thorn's 2010 album Pimps and Preachers debuted at No. 83 on the
Billboard 200 chart, his highest chart position to date. His 2012 album What
the Hell Is Going On was the 12th Most Played Album of 2012 on the
Americana Music Association Year-End Chart and was Thorn’s second
record to debut on the Billboard Top 100 its first week of release.
In 2014, Thorn released Too Blessed to Be Stressed, which he described as
a collection of "positive anthem songs.
"In the past, I've told stories that were mostly inspired by my own life," the
former prizefighter and son of a preacher man offers. Thorn is a colorful and
distinctly Southern personality himself. He was raised in Tupelo,
Mississippi, in the land of cotton and catfish, and churches.
"My father was a preacher, so I went with him to churches that
white people attended and churches
that black people attended," Thorn says.
"The white people sang gospel like
it was country music, and the black people
sang it like it was rhythm and blues.
But both black and white people
attended my father's church, and that's how
I learned to sing mixing those styles.”
"I'm dyslexic and got held back in sixth grade,"
Thorn relates. "I didn't have to face
the embarrassment, because my family moved
and I ended up in a new school.
There was a talent show,
and I sang Three Times a Lady
by Lionel Ritchie with my acoustic guitar,
and suddenly I went from being a
social outcast to the most desired boy
on the playground. The feeling I got from
that adulation stuck with me and
propelled me to where I am today.”

PLUMB is beginning to EXHALE.
EXHALE, the seventh studio album from acclaimed multi-genre singer, songwriter
and author PLUMB, expresses a new focus and vision. After the runaway success
of NEED YOU NOW (the album, title track and book), which coincided with her
own moving story of brokenness and ultimately healing, Exhale brims with
worshipful songs of gratitude and hope. The defining concept of EXHALE was born
from a sermon at Plumb’s home church, wherein her pastor Pete Wilson
expressed the notion that the Church doesn’t exist for itself. Rather, believers
come to church to breathe in grace and truth, be changed, and then go out and
“exhale” that hope into their surrounding community. “That idea of exhaling hope
hit me right away and I couldn’t get to the Notes section on my phone fast enough. I
started writing the chorus of Exhale right then and there,” explains Plumb. “I have
been made new by the ultimate hope, and I want to share and exhale that hope in
every way I can.” This heartfelt gratitude combined with the notion of “exhaling”
has led to the most sincere and overtly spiritual Plumb album to date. The theme is
so fundamentally important to the artist, in fact, that the album cover features the
following synopsis in Plumb’s own handwriting:
We do not exist for us but to share the grace and love given to us all. We breathe it
in, it changes us, and then we breathe it out, we share it. I have now breathed in
deeply and it has changed me completely. It has healed my heart, restored my
home and made me new.
Because of that grace, there is always hope. It’s oxygen.
Breathe it in…and then EXHALE
