HELPING AT HOME WITH READING — PART 10
INFERRING
Readers think about and search the text, and sometimes use
personal knowledge to construct meaning beyond what is literally stated.
Good readers use clues to figure out what it really means. It is
like being a detective and trying to find out what the author is
trying to tell us when it is not written in the text (the underlying
message).
ACTIVITY: ‘Reading Between The Lines’
PURPOSE: To ‘read between the lines’ to construct meaning
Take a section of a text and go through it with your child. Read
the selection out loud to them, pausing at key sections to ask,
“So, what is really going on here?” (inferences) . Model to your
child how you could find clues in the text to support your thinking. Demonstrate how prior knowledge helps to make inferences.
Continue to read selection of text pausing at key sections and
asking your child to make inferences about what is going on in
the text.
Prompts that you could use are:
Why do you think that happened?
I wonder...
What is really going on?
What evidence does the author provide to
support........?
What clues did the author give that led to your
conclusion?
What is the story beneath the story?
How do you know that?
How do you think the character feels?
How do you combine the clues in the paragraph
with what you already know to draw
a conclusion?
Think Feet First
Active Travel Tip 1: Be a Role Model
You are your child’s most important role model.
By actively travelling with your child you are encouraging healthy active habits for life. It is also important to
role model safe behaviours when actively travelling with
your child
Be sure to always wear a helmet if you or your child
are riding a bike or scooter
Practice looking out together for cars and traffic in
driveways and intersections
Obey all road rules
Cross roads safely & teach your child how to cross
the road safely:
1.
Stop back from the edge of the street
2.
Look all around you for oncoming traffic
3.
Listen for any traffic
4.
Think about if it is safe to cross the road. Is
there any traffic
coming? Do you have enough
time to safely cross?
When crossing the road walk safely across the road,

Dear Parents/Caregivers
We are approaching the half way mark of this term, I hope this
newsletter finds you and your families well. Many great moments
already experienced and so many more to come in the weeks
ahead.
Feast of the Assumption
Yesterday we celebrated a Whole School Mass for the
Feast of the Assumption. This feast is one of the most
important feasts of our Lady. We believe in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. We believe
when her earthly life was finished, Mary was assumed body and
soul into heavenly glory, where the Lord exalts her as Queen of
Heaven. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, # 966).
Mary’s Assumption gives us the assurance and hope of our own
resurrection and assumption into heaven on the day of our Last
Judgment. Since Mary’s Assumption was a reward for her saintly
life, this feast reminds us that we too must be pure and holy in
body and soul, since our bodies will be glorified on the day of our
resurrection. St. Paul tells us that our bodies are the temples of
God because the Holy Spirit dwells within us.
Taken up into heaven, Mary shows us the way to God, the way to
heaven, the way to life. The Queen of the world reveals to individuals
and to nations the power of the love of God whose plan upsets that of the
proud, pulls down the mighty from their thrones and exalts the humble,
fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich empty away (cf. Lk
1:51-53)."

1999
Quotes from the ‘Year of Grace Pastoral Letter’ by Archbishop
Philip Wilson
Like the disciples at the first Pentecost, we commit ourselves to
start afresh from Christ. Most deeply, we desire for the light of
Christ to burn more brightly in the heart of each Australian.
We commit ourselves to pray daily, seeking the mind and heart of
Jesus Christ.
We commit ourselves to repent for the areas in which we have
failed, individually and together, seeking healing and renewal
through the grace of Christ’s forgiveness.
We commit ourselves to the path of holiness, cultivating the
many gifts of the Spirit and seeking to grow as disciples of Jesus.
We entrust this year to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and
through this renewed commitment, we are confident that the
Church in Australia will be transformed by the power of Christ’s
resurrection in our lives.
We invite you to join us (the Catholic Bishops of Australia) in
this journey of prayer so that this ‘Pentecost’ year will be for our
nation and all Australians truly a ‘Year of Grace’.
National Science Week & Science Learning Area
This week is National Science Week. National Science Week is an annual celebration of science in
Australia, an opportunity to join together to enjoy
and explore the wonders and benefits of science. The
schools theme for 2012 is “energy evolution”, based
on the UN’s International Year of Sustainable Energy For All.
This year we have begun introducing Science from the Australian
Curriculum. The Australian Curriculum: Science provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of important

Book Week
Next Week is Book week and the theme this year is
“Readers are Champions”. Book Week will be celebrated throughout next week, with our major celebrations on Monday 20th Aug. On this day students are
invited to come in character and costume of someone
or something from one of their favourite books. We will have a
whole school parade at 9am in the Sacred Heart Centre. During
the day students will work in cross year level groups exploring a
number of the short-listed books. At 12noon there will be a sharing of learning which will be followed by a shared lunch at
12:30pm on the front lawns, weather permitting. Classes will
share the shared lunch in year level groups. I hope you can join us
for these special events and celebrate our school and national focus on reading.
Allergy Aware
With severe allergies on the rise, as a caring community we cannot afford to be uninformed about
the risks to children. We need to arm ourselves
with information on food allergy and anaphylaxis
and create environments that are safer for all. Peer support is an
important element of support for students at risk of anaphylaxis.
Staff can raise awareness in school through fact sheets or posters
displayed in hallways, canteens and classrooms.
As a School we must be Allergy aware by:

Always take food allergies seriously—severe allergies are
no joke

Don’t share your food with friends who have food allergies

Wash your hands after eating

Know what your friends are allergic to

If a schoolmate becomes sick, get help immediately

Be respectful of a schoolmate’s EpiPen and medication
Open House
This evening (Thursday 16th Aug 6-7pm) and tomorrow Friday
17th Aug (8:30-9:30 and 2:30-3:30pm) we are holding
our “Open House” of learning. We are requesting
that a significant person in your child’s learning
journey (mum, dad, relative, family friend) come
and celebrate learning through celebrating the
learning associated with the completion of a piece
of work. After this you will be invited to take a
tour of the school and key spaces and see the learning activities of
students throughout the school.
We look forward to welcoming you and sharing student learning
with you. Next week a letter will be send home with information

Parent Partnership
Parents and the Home Environment they create are the
single most important factor in shaping their children’s
achievements and prospects” (2007, p1) Every Parent
Matters , 2007 UK.
Learning at home and at school need to be connected. Taking an interest and understanding what your child is
learning at school is one of the most important ways to support
your child’s success at school.
We wish Shannon Correll , our Deputy Principal a restful and
productive Long Service Leave for the next five weeks of term.
We welcome Bronwyn Ridley as Acting Deputy Principal for
this time.
I look forward to seeing you at our Open House and Book Week
Celebrations,

St Gabriel’s MITIOG REVIEW
Made in the Image of God (MITIOG) is our Human Sexuality
Program which has been taught in our school over the past
few years. MITIOG values the partnerships that schools must
have with parents and believes that the success of the program relies heavily on the input and feedback of parents.
Because of this we are asking for your feedback via an online
survey. If you are interested in completing the survey please
go to the following link or see Bronwyn Ridley in the office
for a paper copy.
