Elizabeth and Jason Phillips announce the birth of daughter Elise at Gwinnett Medical Center on Tuesday, September 10 at 12:45 p.m. Elise weighed in at 6 pounds and 7 ounces. Josh and Jessica Outz proudly announce that they are expecting a baby in March 2014. Lee and I have A LOT of books. They are stacked on bookshelves. They sit in piles next to our respective living room chairs. They sit on our nightstands. Sometimes they wind up on the kitchen counter although I am not sure who is reading standing in the kitchen! On the top shelf in our office there are 2 small books that mean the world to me. The first is a copy of “Good News for Modern Man.” The cover is torn, the pages are yellowed and I hold it together with a rubber band (that I have replaced many times over the years). It was given to me in 1972 when I was 12, by my confirmation sponsor. On the front page she wrote “Gina – keep up the good work. You are doing great! Love, Marge” Nothing profound or monumental but I have kept it all these years. Do you have a copy? It is the New Testament and Psalms written in language I could understand. The margins are written in, passages are underlined, I even wrote my own poems in the note pages in the back. The second is the program from my confirmation service. I read a passage from Romans that Sunday morning. Father Tim was our youth minister and he took the time to mark the passage so I would know when to pause, what words to accentuate, when to finish with my voice up, when to finish with my voice down. He cared enough to practice with me and standing in front of hundreds of people that morning, it meant more to me than I could say. I tell you all of this to remind you that everything you do matters, no matter how insignificant you might think it is. Years from now our children will remember that we took the time to love them, help them, and encourage them. That we participated in Wonderful Wednesday, Sunday school and Children’s church. That we went on field trips. Ran 5ks. We took every day mundane things and made them extraordinary. A few years ago I went back to the church I grew up in and once again read from Romans, this time at my Grandmother’s funeral. After the service one of the deacons asked if I am a lectern at my home church (someone who reads scripture for the congregation). When I told him “no,” he said “you should be.” In that instant, I looked heavenward and thanked the Holy Spirit, Marge and Father Tim. It really does, all matter. Children’s Christmas Program practice begins October 6th! Mrs. Kim will make sure we have a schedule with dates and times. October 13th is National Children’s Sabbath. At 8:30 and 11:00 am worship we will have a slideshow that shows off all our new babies! 3-4-5 graders will participate in worship by reading scripture and prayer. Trunk or Treat – Wednesday, October 23rd from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Wear your costumes, and come for games and fun! We need volunteers to decorate car trunks and assist with games and costume judging. Call me if you can help! Family Fall Festival at the Bower’s Farm, Sunday, October 27 th from 4:00 till 7:00 pm. The church will provide chicken for all, please bring a side dish or dessert to share with others. Good food, fellowship, games, hayrides, face painting and more…Just let us know you are coming so we will have enough food! Great Day of Service 2013 On Saturday August 24, 2013 over 120 members of Commerce First United Methodist Church and Warren Chapel United Methodist Church combined forces to provide food boxes, yard work, house cleaning and repair to residents of Jackson and Banks Counties. The outreach also included writing letters to service members’ overseas, providing bread to shut ins, and little dresses to families in Guatemala and Honduras. A half day Vacation Bible School was provided to children of Willoughby and Bellview homes and a Cookie Coloring Party took place at Peachtree Senior Village. Those church members not actively participating in these services took time to pray for the volunteers and those in the community. The "Feed My Sheep" Food Distribution program involved soliciting food from Banks County Walmart and Quality Food Commerce. Boxes were supplied by Ingles Supermarkets of Commerce. Fifty church volunteers received hundreds of items from local superstore shoppers and supplemented this with food from the Athens Food Bank using cash contributions. 354 families in need came to Warren Chapel to pick up boxes of food or had them delivered to their homes. They received cereal, canned goods, crackers, macaroni and cheese, instant potatoes, rice and many other necessities. Yard work, cleaning and repair services as well as stocking shelves at Peace Place were accomplished by 33 volunteers including professional landscapers who cut grass for families and organizations such as Wellspring Camp and cleaned residences at locations such as Willoughby Homes and Bellview Homes. The day was truly ecumenical as Baptists, Catholics, and Methodists from as far away as Hickory Flat, Georgia participated in this day of service. Great Day of Service is only one day of the year but it reminds us of the tremendous needs that exist in our community and enables us to work together in Christ to make the lives of others better not only one day but throughout the year.
