I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful
Thanksgiving with family and friends. It is always
important to reflect on all of those things we have
to be thankful for. One thing that I’m always
thankful for is your support in your child’s
education. I would like to express my appreciation
for all of you who participated in your child’s
parent teacher conference. I’m pleased to report
we had a 95% participation rate which is a tribute
to all of you. Thank You!
middle school for a tour and orientation. This
opportunity will also be given to parents prior to
the end of this school year.
Congratulations to our Student Council for their
efforts in organizing and running a very successful
Holiday Food Drive. With their efforts we
exceeded the goal of 1,000 items, great job. I’m
always proud to see our families give to the
community to make everyone’s holiday season that
much more joyous.
As everyone is aware, there are going to be some
big changes next year with the moving of the sixth
graders to the middle schools. Actually, this year
it’s an even a bigger change for us since two grade
levels will be going simultaneously. I’m sure for
our parents with a fifth or sixth grader you have a
lot of questions. The principals from both middle
schools are well aware of this and have planned
informational meetings to share their vision and
answer your questions. So on Wednesday
December 10th @ 6:00, Bob Been from CVMS will
be here, and on Thursday December 11th @ 6:00,
Keith Lewis from PWLMS will be here. I think
these sessions will be very beneficial in alleviating
any concerns and informative on what will be
expected from the students. Also, as we do every
year, students will be taken to their assigned

Finally, a big thank you to our PTO for sponsoring
an extremely successful Turkey Bingo Night; we
had such a great turnout we ran out of bingo cards.
No worries for the next one, though, they have
already ordered more cards. So spread the word on
how much family fun the bingo nights are. Oh, I
almost forgot to mention, we gave away 19 turkeys
along with many other prizes. Thanks again PTO
for such a fun filled evening!

Ken Stoll

The Counselor’s Corner:
10 Ways to Raise a Responsible Child
Happy Holidays! I wish you all a happy, healthy, and fun holiday season. It’s almost 2015 and the New Year
provides a fresh start to do things well for yourselves and your children. As you start this New Year, I encourage you
to remember that children learn by what they see and hear. Set a good example and teach responsibility.
10 Ways to Raise a Responsible Child
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Establish family rules and be consistent about carrying out consequences for any rules that are not followed.
Give chores to do, appropriate to your child’s age.
Provide opportunities for choices. These could start with which bedtime story to hear or which socks to wear.
Praise your child for completing responsibilities.
Teach good health and safety habits. Children need to learn to care for themselves.
Make it your child’s responsibility to get all homework done on time.
Help your child get organized. Teach your child to keep all schoolwork in one place, write down assignments,
and file papers.
8. Divide big tasks into smaller parts, so that success will encourage
your child to tackle new responsibilities.
9. As your child matures, offer ways to earn, save, and manage money.
10. Encourage concern for the feelings and needs of others in your family
and community.

Variances Available
for Pau-Wa-Lu
Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School Principal, Keith Lewis, would like to make 5th and 6th grade parents aware of
an opportunity to have your child attend Pau-Wa-Lu on a variance. Beginning Monday, December 8th,
Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School will have 50 variances available for students who will be 6th and 7th graders
during the 2015-16 school year. These variances will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis through
January 16, 2015.
It is important to note that transportation is not provided for students on a variance. Parents will be
required to transport students to school or to the nearest bus stop that is zoned for Pau-Wa-Lu.
Mr. Lewis will be speaking to parents at Minden Elementary School on Thursday, December 11th, at 6:00
PM. In addition, PWLMS will be hosting an informational meeting on Thursday, December 18th, at 6:00
PM in their Cafetorium. In the meantime, if you have any questions please contact Pau-Wa-Lu Registrar,
Linda Slater, at 265-6100.
