R EEFPOINT - Racine Yacht Club!
Mark your calendar: Breakfast with Santa - December 14 Christmas Morning Tom & Jerrys 9-Noon New Year’s Eve Party December 31 REEF POINT “For the encouragement and promotion of yachting and the creation of a spirit of good fellowship…” December 2014 (RYC Constitution, Article II) Racine Yacht Club Commodore’s Report Welcome to my first installment of the Commodore’s Report in RYC’s Reefpoint. I find myself humbled and honored that the members of RYC have put their trust in me to lead their Club. I am encouraged by the fantastic board that has been put in place by our nominating committee. RYC is in great hands. A tremendous “Thank You” to now Staff Commodore, Charlie Manning, for his years of service and of course, your parking spot. To Mary Manning, you may now have your husband back! (That is if you want him back…) As I look back on my childhood and the wonderful memories of sailing out of Racine Yacht Club and the Racine Regatta on my father’s boat, “Wild Pansy”, it brings back the glory days of sailing in the late 70’s and 80’s. As most sailors, I faded away from sailing in pursuit of having a family and establishing a career. However, the love of sailing never left my blood, and I found myself back in the thick of it racing with Mark and Mary Jo Rode on “Whisper” and back at RYC! In the picture, you might notice some familiar faces as, past RYC Race Director and my father Al Henning, me, our friend DJ, current Vice Commodore, John Stanley, and our Past Commodore, Mark Rode and his lovely wife Mary Jo.We looked a little younger then. Racing on “Whisper” and then “Wet Willy” brought me back to sailing, but the bug of boat ownership bit me, and “Goombay Smash” was the boat of choice. However, sometimes you make misguided choices in life, and I joined Waukegan Yacht Club (What was I thinking?). It wasn’t long after being at Waukegan that I realized the Racine Yacht Club was home. My father showed me that you cannot just be a member of a yacht Club; you must be part of it. As he gave back to the sailing community by being Commodore of Columbia Yacht Club, Race Director at RYC, and numerous other affiliations, I have done the same. I was Co-Race Director with Bob Sample at Waukegan Yacht Club and the Race Director at RYC. I spent the last 3 ½ years as Vice Commodore here and look forward to serving as your Commodore. Phones ミ General: (262) 634-8585 Racine, Wisconsin Back in the day… Good times with great people... Photo courtesy of Gregg Henning I implore each member to find a way to become a “part” of Racine Yacht Club. If you find things that you are dissatisfied with, be part of the solution. Work with our board of directors to continue creating the best yacht club on any waterfront. Support your Club, bring in prospective members, and look forward to our 100 year celebration. Our search for a new caterer may soon be over, and we look forward to smooth sailing in our galley. Don’t forget our upcoming events such as Breakfast with Santa and Tom and Jerrys on Christmas morning! Even though it feels like winter, keep your shorts on, keep positive vibes, and summer will be here sooner that you think! Remember, it is always tropical in your mind! — Gregg Henning, Commodore Racine Yacht Club ・ One Barker Street ・ Racine, WI 53402 42 44.24 N - 87 46.69 W Office, 7:00amミNoon: (262) 634-8587 FAX (262) 634-8971 Web site: www.racineyachtClub.org e-mail: [email protected] View the Reef Point in color on our Web site! RYC News in Brief From the November Board meeting minutes: Treasurer Frank Randall presented the October financial statement with the comment that the Club had a good month. Both month and year-to-date adjusted income were ahead of budget by approximately $4000. Randall reported water levels continue to rise, up one inch from the previous period. Commodore Charlie Manning commented on his tenure as Commodore: “it was a pleasure and honor to work with the Board.” He indicated his annual report is printed in the November Reef Point. Vice Commodore Gregg Henning reported that the current caterer has announced withdrawal from the contract as of December 15th. Interviews are underway on a fast track to secure a new caterer. Rear Commodore John Stanley announced that Bombardier Recreational Products will be giving the club new outboards for the junior program (and possibly race committee) boats next season. BRP maintains the engines for the Club in return for feedback and advertising. Discussion followed on how best to show RYC appreciation for this valuable donation. MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT: Shortess presented the membership status changes in Ponsonby’s absence: STATUS CHANGES: Active to Resigned: Dr. Robin Knodel Social to Inactive: Justin Gall All status changes were unanimously approved. House Director-elect Jim Mc Bain reiterated that all efforts are in place to secure a new caterer on a timely basis. Pier Director Mark Lukow reported all boats are out of the slip system. He will be removing rings and ladders shortly. He is waiting for a weather window to raise more finger piers. The floating piers need to be removed so he and Manning will contact the Harbor Patrol, who had done this work in past years. Yark Director Jack Landwehr presented a written report as a part of his annual report. He indicated the recent damage to the north side gate will be repaired. Most aspects of the Yard are in great condition. Parking lot surface remains in good condition. Winter plowing is set up with Randy as in the past several years. Lawn was cut for the final time this season. Outside Smoking Lounge is located within the gray enclosure located north of the ramp leading to the club house entrance. Smokers are asked to use this smoking area due to the lingering smoke odor on the ramp. Smoking is prohibited on the entrance ramp. Please respect the needs of nonsmoking members. As a reminder, all tobacco and smoking materials are banned from use in the RYC club house; this includes electronic type devices. The RYC Outside Smoking Lounge is a convenient area for lighting up. When the dining room is not in use, secondary smoking area on the east patio is available. The cold is already getting old… Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson reported plans are well underway for Breakfast with Santa, December 14th. He is working to line up the entertainment for the New Year’s Eve party. Lasson announced the newly-installed juke box has generated a $47 profit. Race Director Bob Sample announced the January 24th Awards Banquet will be catered by member Terry Marcus. He reported all race boats have been put into winter storage. He will be using the shed at the rear of the clubhouse for race committee equipment and supplies. Sample led a discussion regarding race marks, which do not currently meet the requirements of the Wisconsin DNR. He has decided there will be no permanent marks in place next year. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES ADULT SAILING: Cook will get info for the Reef Point, advertising gift certificates for Sailing School. Shortess also (had) the certificates for sale at the vendor fair. COMMUNICATIONS Cook read a letter from Racine Chief of Police Arthel Howell, thanking the Club for the donation to the Racine Policeman’s Ball K9 fundraiser. Visit RYC’s Website at www.racineyachtClub.org for the most up-to-date information, events and race results. 2 Meetings/Club Hours See this month’s calendar on page 4 for additional coming events.
