Racine Yacht Club Commodore’s Report
I write this report aboard my new yacht. Amy and I decided to
take a Christmas trip to Florida. What we didn’t know is that
we would end up on an adventure. Mark Lukow, I will need a
slip in our system. It may need to be an end tie up as it is 938
feet long, beam of 106 feet and draft of 26 feet… Sorry, Rick
Hennig, you don’t have the biggest yacht in the fleet anymore.
The small issue is that it takes a crew of 929 so Pam Jobson, you
have some work cut out for you. Members can bring 2,136 of
their closest friends on board. This would make a beautiful club
ship as it has two pools, basketball court, and at least 10 bars (I
am still finding them). Better yet, its top speed is 24 knots.
Amy and I jumped aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam and took a
last minute cruse to Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas, and the
Bahamas. We took a small excursion on Grand Turk where
there are only 4500 residents on the island. Amy and I jumped
on some quad runners and explored the island.
Christmas Day was spent in St. Thomas. We spent some time
visiting the downtown and purchased a little liquor and gifts to
bring back with us. I think we need to set up Racine Yacht Club,
Southern Station. Charlie Manning, see if your 100th
Anniversary Committee can work that into the budget.

As we head back north to the Bahamas and then back to
Florida, Mrs. Commodore and I will spend New Year’s Eve on
the beach in Indialantic thinking of all our members enjoying
the fun at Kurt’s New Year’s Bash.
It is amazing how fast the holidays come and go and yet our
members jump in and make the Club look amazing! January
brings our Awards Banquet which our Race Director, Bob
Sample and his lovely wife, Cathy have some special plans for
us. So special, they won’t even tell me. Preceding that will be
Strictly Sail, in a new venue at McCormick Place, combined
with the Boat & RV show. This should be an interesting event.
Looking forward to seeing you all in 2015! May it be a
wondrous year of good fortune and fair winds.
Remember, even though it feels like winter, keep your shorts
on, keep positive vibes, and summer will be here sooner than
you think!
Remember it is always tropical in your mind!

RYC News in Brief
From the December Board meeting minutes:
Treasurer Frank Randall presented the
November Treasurer’s report and the 2015
Budget worksheet.
We had a good month from a financial
standpoint with an adjusted income of
$11,420. Unless we have an unexpected
expense in the next two months, we will be
able to add to our cash reserve this year.
Randall reported levels are expected to
drop two inches next month.
Vice Commodore John Stanley reported
that the Pink Magnolia (owners Tina and
Eddie) has been selected and was extended
a contract. As of today we are still waiting
for the new caterer to sign the contract. Out
of the Pan will stay on until December 31,
2014. Bar service starts on Jan 1st and the
galley will be open on the16th.
Office Manager Kim Shortess led
discussions regarding the best means to
introduce the new caterer to the members,
discussion followed
Rear Commodore Amy Cermak led a
discussion regarding the summer youth
sailing programs and schedule.
Membership Secretary Pam Jobson
reported she and her committee are ready
for the Strictly Sail show. She said as
incentive they will provide giveaways to
five new members. Jobson presented the
membership status change request.
STATUS CHANGES
Associate to Resigned: Deb Murphy,
Herman Morgan
All requests were approved. With the
recent changes, the member total is 266.
House Director Jim Mc Bain reiterated he
and John have made an offer to a replacement
caterer and he will assist in completing the
changeover. The Club shutdown is
scheduled for February 1st through the 11th.
Pier Director Mark Lukow submitted a
written report stating water levels typically
drop a foot from the summer high to the
winter low. This year we’ve picked up 4-6
inches since July. Currently we’re running
about 579.1 feet, 1.6 feet over Low Water
Datum. This is the highest we’ve seen on
Lake Michigan since late 1998. As previously
reported, I want a 12” buffer between harbor
ice and horizontal pier structures to prevent
seiche-induced ice damage. I was under the
mistaken assumption that the next foot on
west pier fingers would be as easy as the last
foot. NOT TRUE. We are up as far as
adjustments allow. Our next move up will
require serious engineering and structural
work that exceed my capabilities. I suspect
we are approaching the point where the cost
of preventing ice damage is equal to the cost
of repairing ice damage.
Floaters: I had an adventure unsuccessfully trying to move the Sea Scout pier to
Reefpoint Marina. Since then Reefpoint has
iced in with at least one person fishing on
the ice. I decided to hedge my bets and
stored the 10 minute pier on the hard. Miscellaneous: Life rings are stored. All
but two safety ladders are up. I’ve started
wearing a PFD when working alone on the
pier which is closed for the season.
Yard Director Jack Landwehr submitted a
written report stating plans are in place to
plow and salt lot. Snow will be plowed after
a two inch snow fall. Salt will be spread as
needed. Rock salt will be spread on the
walkway from the west parking lot to the
main entrance.
As with all parking lots, low areas collect
water and pose a hazard where ice can
form. If needed, rock salt is available in the
coatroom that any member can use to
spread on icy areas locate in the RYC
parking lot.
A special thanks to the smokers that are
lighting up in the approved smoking area
located in the gray enclosure behind the ice
bag freezer. Smoking in this area reduces
smoke odor from the main entrance. I
appreciate the effort to use the approved
smoking area and refrain from smoking on
the ramp or near the entrance to the
clubhouse.
There are 14 boats on cradles and seven
on trailers. Thank you to all RYC boat
owners and Ship 5750 that took advantage
of the winter storage program offered to
RYC active members and Ship 5750.
Sealcoat King of Racine coated and lined
the parking lot last summer. Sealcoat offered
a rebate to RYC for each new customer
generated by RYC members. Five RYC
members used Sealcoat King to seal asphalt
drivewaysand the rebate amounted to
approximately $127.

plans on publishing a detailed account of

NEW BUSINESS
Downtown Racine Corporation has a
location for Racine Yacht Club to display
literature/ad pieces. Board members
discussed that we should utilize the
opportunities to promote the Club, since we
are members. Members discussed what
type of info or ad pieces we should include.
Kim agreed to reach out to DRC for clarity
of options. As soon as we determine what
we want to display, John Lyon has agreed to
stock the info rack.
Gregg Henning led a discussion regarding
RYC sponsoring the Splash and Dash. Board
voted not to accept the request due to new
caterer startup.

Tina has been a bartender and bar
manager at familiar locations such as The
Docks, Salute, Hobnob, Corner House
and Henry & Wanda’s. Eddie was a chef
for over 10 years at the Corner House and
the Corporate Chef at SC Johnson and
Modine.
Tina and Eddie will manage the bar
service starting December 31st, with a
grand opening for dinner on the 16th of
January. Make your reservations in
advance because we are sure everyone
will be excited with the new menu and
beverages.
