Lights, camera, talent. It’s time! The fifth
grade talent show is almost here! This year’s
talent show is not just
going to be awesome, but truly
amazing! There
are so many
acts: Discount
Double Check,
Who’s on First,
Tea Time with
Tabish, and The Great
Enlarger Machine comedy skits, an awesome
magic act, dances, instruments, a band, and what
talent show wouldn’t be
good without singing solos!
Every year there is an
annual variety talent
show. The 5th graders
work very hard and learn
a thing or two about
teamwork and flexibility.
This year’s talent show is
very different from last
year’s. There
will be more
commercials,
less dances
and lots and
lots of awesomeness!!
But we are not
going to spoil it all. Practice has been much more
fun than you would think.
With your friends running around reciting
lines, rehearsing dance
moves, singing, and editing, how could you go
wrong?
There is a
full afternoon
SUPER BOWL XLVI
There were Super Bowl parties and
concerts all week long. At them, you
could find old and current football
players. They celebrated their first
awards show called NFL Honors.
Everyone was there—Troy Aikman,
Tim Tebow, Carn Newton, DeSean
Jackson, Joe Namath, Tony Gonzalez, Don Shula, Barry Sanders
and others. There were also, performances by Carrie Underwood,
Lenny Kravitz, Katie Perry, Steven
Tyler and more.

planned for Central students to see wonderful
acts and talented students.
But it’s not just the students who are talented;
the parents are just as
good. They help the students to get props on
stage, create the acts and
the help with the planning!
The show is an annual tradition, and the
grand finale sure will fit
up to its name about being grand. So what are
you waiting for? Don’t
forget to come to school
and enjoy the fun!

Dan Gutman: What you don’t know.
You all know Dan Gutman,
right? He’s been to our school and
we have many of his books in our
school library. Well, I’ve gone behind the scenes and into his home
and have seen his office where he
creates all his fantastic books. I
have interviewed him and learned
things about him like his elementary school and his newest books. I
will share them with you now.
Dan Gutman grew up in Newark, New Jersey and attended
Mount Vernon School from kindergarten through 8th grade. He attended Vailsburg High School and
later graduated from Rutgers College in 1977 with a degree in Psychology, the study of people and
their behavior. I bet that is how he
knows kids so well. In 1994, Dan
Gutman thought that many
kids liked time travel. He also knew
that many kids collected baseball
cards. So he decided to combine
baseball cards with time travel to
create the Baseball Card Adventures series. In 2004, Dan’s little
daughter, Abby, liked the Junie B.
Jones books. Dan liked the idea of a
kid telling about school from
his/her point of view. So he created
the My Weird School series told by
A.J. (Arlo Jervis). The My Weird
School series is pretty much Junie
B. Jones told by a boy.
Speaking of the My Weird
School series, did you know that
Dan actually knew a smarty pants
know-it-all named Andrea Young?
She was one of the easiest characters for him to create. The hardest
character for him to create was
Miss Holly. While he was writing
Miss Holly Is Too Jolly Dan didn’t
know any Spanish. So he needed to
learn
some
Spanish
to create
this
wacky
Spanish
teacher.
But best
of all, he
came up with Mr. Klutz from principals he met at schools he visited.
The latest book in the My Weird
School series is about Mr. Burk, a
grounds keeper at Ela Mentary
School. Mr. Burk Is Berserk came
out the week of February 16, 2012.
You may not know that Dan
Gutman has also written another
series called the
The Genius Files. In this series a
family goes on a vacation around
the country. On the trip, the two
children, Coke and Pepsi, discover
that they are being followed by men
who want to kill them. The first
book, Mission Unstoppable, came
out last year. The next book in the
series is called Genius Files: Never
Say Genius. It came out in January
2012.
Did you ever read the Million
Dollar series written by Dan Gutman? In that series, I asked Dan
Gutman what he would
do if he won a million
dollars. He told me he
would either buy a house
in New York City because he grew up there or
take a vacation around
the world with his family.
For those who want to meet
Dan Gutman, he is coming to our
school in February of 2013. Till
then, you can get My Weird School
merchandise like phone covers, tshirts, posters, and much more at

Ready For Back to School Shopping for 2012?
Imagine that you went fall clothing
shopping in spring. Weird, right? Well,
that’s exactly what people in New York
are doing- because of New York Fashion Week! New York Fashion Week is
exactly its name. It happens in early
fall (for the spring) and early spring
(for fall).
It’s when all of the big designers
bring out their fall outfits on the runway, then put the outfits on sale in
early summer. Fabrics and materials
that are popular for fall are, for example leather, fur and cable knits. Leather
is made of animal hide. Designers are
using leather for pants and gloves in
addition to purses and boots, which
they always do. Fur is that fuzzy stuff
on an animal’s body, and this fall you
will see it on booties, skirts, and handbags. Cable knit is chunky knitted yarn
material that you usually see on warm,
cozy, thick sweaters. It will also be
used on dresses this fall.
Color Fall Fashion Forecast: cool,
tasty, oxblood. What is oxblood? Oxblood is a deep maroon color that is
flattering to any skin tone.
Men and Women: French roast tasty,
kind of like coffee! Honey gold: warm,
mellow. Tangerine tango: exciting,
like a fiesta. Ultra Marine Green:
cool, relaxing, and actually wet?!
Bright chartreuse: bright, colorful, rulebreaking, by taking a spring color into
fall. Olympian blue: steadying, preppy.
Titanium: cooling the wardrobe.
Men Only: Rhubarb: wine, powerful.
Sea Fog: ethereal (eerie and misty).
Women Only: Rhapsody: quiet, serenity. Rose smoke: smoky, veiled. Pink
flambé: vibrant.
Keep your eye on the Wall Street
Journal this March for the latest updates in fashion.

SUPERBOWL
Super Bowl 2012 was a hit. Everyone was talking crazy about it. One
ticket cost $1200. The Super Bowl
was in Indianapolis, IN at the Lucas
Oil Stadium. The New England Patriots went head-to-head with the New
York Giants. The halftime show was
performed by Madonna along with
MIA, Nicki Minaj and Cee Lo Green.
On February 5, 2012 the Patriots
won the toss and elected to kick to
the Giants. The Giants started off
with a good drive to about the Patriots 45 yard line. The Giants had to
punt it away. The Patriots started on
the 5 yard line. The first play for the
Patriots was a safety. The Patriots
had to punt it away to the Giants. The
Giants drive would lead to a touchdown. Then, a two yard pass to Victor Cruz made it 9-0 NYG. New England had the ball till time elapsed and
that was the end of the 1st quarter.
cont’d from p.1
In the 2nd quarter, the Giants started
out with the ball but didn’t get anything going. They had to punt the ball
away to the Patriots. Then the Patriot’s had to punt it away, too. After
two drives the Patriots got a four yard
touchdown pass to Danny Woodhead.
In the 3rd quarter the Patriots scored
again on a 12 yard touchdown pass to
A. Hernandez. The Giants got two
field goals out of their two drives in
the quarter.
In the 4th quarter, Bradshaw had a
touchdown with 57 seconds left and
the Patriots had the ball. The Patriots
were down to the last play. It was an
incomplete pass and the GIANTS
WON THE SUPER BOWL!!
Indianapolis fans were happy and
rooting for the NY Giants because of
their rivalry between the Patriots and
the fact that Peyton Manning, their
quarterback, and Eli Manning are
brothers.
Here are some important facts
about this year’s Super Bowl…
• The Giants became the 1st team in
SB history to win a Super Bowl in
four different decades (1986, 1990,
2007, 2011).
• This was the second Super Bowl,
after SBX, resulting in a final score
of 21-17 with the winning score including a safety as part of its 21 point
total.
• The Giants became the 5th team to
win at least 4 Super Bowls, and the
Patriots were the 4th team to lose four.
• Super Bowl XLVI was the most
watched TV show in U.S. history
with 111.3 million people watching.
Also, 114 million people watched the
half time show, the most watched
half time show ever!

The Dining Divas Visit Max Brenner
In case
you didn’t
know, Max
Brenner is a
restaurant
right in
Philadelphia. We
should tell
you this is no ordinary restaurant…
it’s a chocolate world! The first
thing we noticed when we walked
in was the aroma of mixing chocolates. Yum! We really noticed the
unique atmosphere that made us
feel right at home. It was especially
different because of its interesting
wallpaper.
When the waitress, Rebecca, who
was very nice, showed us to our
table we noticed how neatly set it
was. We also looked in the ladies’
bathroom and we noticed that it
didn’t smell as good as it probably
should. The bathroom wallpaper
was superb and there was a cute
phrase on the mirror. We also asked
a man passing by how the men’s
bathroom was, and he said it was
fine.
Once our drinks came back we
enjoyed the fruit smoothie. We recommend it for everyone! Also
Anna’s mom got the tea and she
said it was good, and we all loved
the dispenser it came in even
though it took a long time to come
and took a few reminders. When
our food came (which didn’t take
too long), we dug in! We really enjoyed the pizza. Ellie thought the
salad was okay but Anna LOVED
it!
We interviewed a waiter, a waitress, and the manager who were all
pretty nice. Sean Snyder, the manager, had some of the best responses to our questions. The first
question we asked him was, “Does
Max Brenner make its own chocolate?” His response didn’t really
surprise us….YES! (Well, he wasn’t so enthusiastic). Next we asked,
“Has anyone famous visited here?”
This time we were surprised. A few
Eagle players have visited together
and the mayor of Philly. Well, this
restaurant being so cool, we were
not so surprised. Our next question
was the most easy to answer. It was,
“Do most people come here for the
meal or for the dessert?” He answered, “For the chocolate and the
experience,” easy, huh? For our last
question, we wanted to know if he
had anything he wanted to add or
tell to the readers. He said, Max
Brenner is “famous for hot chocolate” and it’s a “great hidden treasure in Philadelphia.” We really
liked what he had to say.
All in all, Max Brenner is a great
restaurant. It has good food, it is
very clean, and it has good service
(most of the time). So if you’re at
home and don’t want to cook or are
deciding where to go out to dinner
try…

Ghost F-F-F-Five
Hello! You should be probably
be getting tired of us, but you better
not get your hopes too high because
we’re never going to stop investigating! Let us introduce the gang—
Will Tully, (the leader) Matt Eyles,
Matt Moskovitz, Olivia Westover,
Tyler Christianson, Gemma Miller
and Luke Soumilas. We are here to
tell you about a time capsule that
we found in the Middle School!
It turns out Betty (the new girl
ghost from our last article) is in that
time capsule! When it is opened in
2014, she will start roaming around
the Middle School! Also, we saw
two teenage boys and they were
threatening to chase poor little Will
and it turns out, they did. (Twice!)
A ghost stepped on Gemma’s
foot when we were walking around.
Gemma said,
“Yoooooooowwwwwwwwwwch
ies!!!” So, you see Gemma is connected to ghosts! That’s why she is
doing this with us! The day we
typed this we were banned from the
middle school, so we couldn’t do
too much, plus the middle school is
the most haunted place in the
school!
Will made a “trick for ghosts”
paper, stuck it on the Haunted Elevator (duhn, duhn,
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhn!!) After a
couple of minutes, Will and Luke
came back and the paper was
ripped, sort of in the form of the
letters Y l. Then, Will, Luke and
Matthew M. went back for more
evidence.
So, you can already see there
are OBVIOUSELY GHOSTS IN
Central (Middle) School, and we’ll
be back for more evidence!
(P.S. If the printer in the computer lab starts printing gibberish,
then there’s probably a you-knowwhat in the printer.)

Magic in Bed
I woke up in bed one morning.
There was a castle clear in sight.
My bed started to arise above
and I was in full flight.
I saw a flaming Phoenix,
fire gleaming from its wings.
I traveled over to a lake
and saw a mermaid sing.
Later, I saw a Pegasus
galloping and flying
and a banshee streak across the sky.
“KAIEE! EE! It was crying.
Then, I went
to the dining
room
with every food that you could think.
There were turkeys, guavas, pomegranates
and some cheese with quite a stink.
I hopped into the library,
with books and books and books,
and magazines and Kindles,
newspapers and Nooks.
Then, I saw a beautiful princess
with golden locks that just ran free.
Then, a knight came and kissesd her on the
cheek
and invited me to play Yahtzee.
I realized I was napping at my desk,
My teacher konked me on the head,
but I didn’t care ‘cuz I’d had just
experienced Magic in Bed!
Matt Eyles
I saw a great big Minotaur
in a maze and all alone.
Then Medusa saw the Minotour.
The poor man-bull turned to stone.
I saw Merlin, the great Wizard,
using a powerful, deafening spell,
on a great big, green, mad dragon
so the dragon had to yell.
I saw a small green person,
the color of a lawn.
It stole my wallet and I realized
it was a leprechaun.
He led me to his pot of gold
but it was filled with elves.
But luckily, they were organized
in nice straight lines of twelves.
I walked into the great big castle
lined with forty floors,
And walked into a great big room
aligned with forty doors.
I walked into the gun room
with toy guns, water guns and Nerfs.
And the whole darn thing was organized
by thirty-seven smurfs.

Our Old School
Do you know where Vineland,
New Jersey is? That’s where David
and I used to live. We just moved to
Haddonfield this year. We never
went to Downtown Haddonfield
before and we like it. We miss our
Old School a lot.
there are about ten people in each
classroom. The schools are also
different because there are only two
floors in Ellison and there are three
whole floors in Central. Ellison is
also different because the library
and computer room are in the same
Central School and our old
school, Ellison, have some similarities. Our old school has a cafeteria
that can be used as a gym, & so can
Central School. Ellison celebrates
holidays like Central. They also
both have huge libraries.
We also both have Field Day. I
remember that there was a really
hot Field Day at Ellison, the hot
sweat leaked down my chin as our
team raced against the other team.
We can’t wait for field day at Central!
Our old school is different from
Central. They have different mascots. Ellison has an eagle and Central has a bulldog. We thought the
biggest difference is that at Ellison
room and here the library and computer lab are not in the same room.
Central has lockers for 3rd graders
and Ellison only has lockers for 5th
to 8th graders.
At Ellison school you have to
go on their website to tell them
what you want to order for lunch.
Then they put what you ordered in
the table that you sit at. As we
know, at Central Elementary we
only order our lunch in our classrooms. Central Elementary uses an
account for when you buy snacks.
In Ellison school you would need
money to buy a coupon for your
snack.
At Central we have Health class
but we didn’t have one at Ellison.
Central Elementary is also different
because the children can play on the
parking lot and at Ellison they can
only play on the field and playground. That’s because there are a
lot of cars on the parking lot and the
parking lot is so small. Ellison is
also different because only fifteen
people play soccer at recess and
there are more than thirty people
that play soccer at recess at Central
Elementary.
We are looking forward to staying here for more than an year! We
hope to see you around school!
