C.S. Lewis
Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast Ireland in 1898, and
moved to England in 1908 where he received his education.
Lewis abandoned Christianity at a young age and became
fascinated with mythology and the occult. After being wounded
in World War I, Lewis returned to England, graduated from
Oxford University and converted (back) to Christianity.
Although well known for his “Chronicles of Narnia” series,
especially “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe”, many of
Lewis’ works related to Christianity and spirituality. Lewis is
also known for his use of satire, as in “The Screwtape Letters”
and “The Great Divorce”, both of which have been adapted for
the stage and are being performed in the Twin Cities this spring.

The Crucible, written in 1953, is an allegory of
McCarthyism? This was a period of time in U.S. history
when some people were accused of “un-American” activities
for supporting Communism. Three years after writing the
play, Miller, who was married to Marilyn Monroe at the
time, found himself before the House of Representatives’
Committee for un-American activities. Because Miller
refused to divulge names he was convicted of “Contempt of

Eating Healthy
by Chef Patrick Atanalian
For this article, she told me “think health.” Okay, so what’s
healthy? I looked up the meaning of it. And found lots of
different descriptions. There’s a healthy weight, a healthy
outlook, a healthy diet, a healthy attitude, a healthy appetite,
a healthy balance, and a healthy lifestyle.
I know what it’s like to be on the other side of “healthy.” Let’s
call it the dark side, the near-death experience. Knowing that
if I don’t have my health, nothing else matters. Now, I’m a
firm believer in a healthy balance.
Look, if I knew the answer to what makes you healthy, it’d be
like playing the lottery every week, and winning!
What I’m saying to you is live your life, have fun, with no
remorse and no regrets. It’s yours and don’t take that for
granted. I’m no Buddha; I’m not your priest, or even your
mirror. I’m Frenchie, and right now, I’m giving you an
order. Get up and go to your cellar, your fridge, or the back
of your closet--wherever you’ve been keeping that bottle of
champagne for that special occasion. Now open it, don’t be
scared, pour it in your glass, say Cheers! and don’t think
twice. That’s my recipe for health.

Healing Arts
The Arts Really Are Healing
Remember when “Healing Arts” referred only to the practice of
medicine? Well now the phrase can actually be taken literally.
Scientific studies have confirmed that the arts can benefit
both your mental and physical health. Participation in the arts
reduces stress levels; reduces fear and the sense of isolation; has
beneficial effects on the immune system; reduces the need for
medication and pain-killers; and even shortens hospital stays.
Researchers investigating how the arts can help us recover from
disease, injury and psychological trauma have measured the
natural substances your body produces when you’re listening to
music or otherwise exposed to the arts and have found evidence
that singing releases substances that serve as the brain’s own
natural pain-killers.
Art therapy is taken very seriously in the scientific community.
“Of all the areas where research has been conducted, the
most compelling and exciting art therapy data is emerging in
the healthcare arena.” (Malachiodi, Cathy. “Arts and Health”
Pyschology Today. Feb, 27, 2013 http://www.psychologytoday.
com/blog/the-healing-arts/201302/yes-virginia-there-issome-art-therapy-research.) Numerous studies underscore the
significance of art therapy in reducing symptoms associated
with asthma, depression, anxiety, fatigue and even cancer. How
lovely it is to know that there is something to make us well that
is affordable, doesn’t taste bad or cause physical discomfort...
and is a truly enjoyable experience!

Meditation: A Tool
For Positive Change
by Guy Odishaw
Modern research is showing us just how powerful
meditation is as a tool for positive change in our
life and our health.
Considering basic meditation, which is what
science has been studying, is the first stage in the
traditional system of personal development.
Can you imagine how potent stage two and three
must be?
I am often asked, “Why meditate?” Have you ever
heard a child ask, “Why save?” Or an adult ask,
“Why invest?” These questions all come from the
same place, a place that does not understand yet.
The one who does not understand the value of a
little sacrifice “now” for a better “later”.
Like your IRA or your education, meditation is an
investment in your future self. Is the you of today
willing to invest in the you of tomorrow? I think
you are worth it!
Meditation is not an end in its self, it is a
beginning. It is like learning the scales on an
instrument so we can make music. Or, like
learning to count before learning math, algebra,
and trigonometry so we can engineer precisely.
We meditate to become more human, to love
more completely, to be more compassionate,
to know more Truth, to have more mercy.
To explore the benefits of meditation,
Bhakti Wellness Center offers courses (such
as Introduction to Meditation, Emotional
Intelligence and Yoga Theory) and services (such

Work by artist Marcia Soderman
“ ‘A Time to Heal’ was painted a year after
9/11 when the media buzz was ‘It’s a time
to heal.’ It is a memorial to the victims
of 9/11. It began with the iron girders of
Ground Zero being masked out in tape,
but it didn’t work. So I proceeded painting
with spontaneous, upward-sweeping
strokes, resulting in a painting that’s as if,
symbolically, the souls of the dead wanted
to rise above the shell of Ground Zero to
soar freely.”

“My painting ‘Healing From The Core’ addresses when someone
you love dies, grief rips your inner core and you need to heal from
within before you can obtain the physical appearance of healing.
I based this painting on a Hebrew story I read once. It said that
when someone dies they ripped their clothes in shreds to display
their grief. When they worked through their grief, they sewed the
torn clothing back together again to represent they had healed.
The seams are now worn on the outside to represent the grief they
had endured and healed from but they still will never be the same
again. The brown lines in the painting represent the seams that
have been sewn back together again.”

AUGUSTE RODIN, “THE KISS”
Photo from Wikipedia
“The realism of the work contrasted so greatly with the
statues of Rodin’s contemporaries that he was accused of
having formed its mold upon a living person.” (http://www.
britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/506608/Auguste-Rodin)
Rodin met 18-year-old Camille Claudel in 1882 and the two
began a passionate and frequently turbulent affair. Claudel
was also a sculptor and the two inspired each other in their
work. It was during this time that Rodin sculpted what many
consider his masterpiece, “The Kiss.” Now, known as the
“Pioneer of Modern Sculpture” Rodin has left the world his
legacy of remarkable work including “The Age of Bronze,
“The Burghers of Calais,” “The Thinker” and “The Kiss”.
Rodin was still working on his last piece, “The Gates of Hell”
when he died on November 17, 1917, in Meudon, France.

FRENCH SCULPTOR AUGUSTE RODIN
Born in Paris on November 12, 1840, Auguste Rodine (FrançoisAuguste-René Rodin) hoped to pursue a career in art but was
rejected (three times) by École des Beaux-Arts, a prestigious art
school in Paris. He earned a living by doing decorative stone work
and remained in that field for almost twenty years before he again
decided to pursue an artistic career.
Rodin met Rose Beuret, a seamstress who became his life
companion, in 1864, although he did not marry her until a few
weeks before her death in February 1917. They had one child
together, a son.
It wasn’t until a visit to Italy in 1875 that Rodin began to develop
his own style as a sculptor. Inspired by the work of Michelangelo
and Donatello, Rodin molded his bronze The Vanquished,
provoking strong reactions and criticism in Brussels and Paris.

Preparing Images of Your Work
for Publication
by Leann E. Johnson, L & J Graphics
If every picture tells a story, make sure your picture tells the
right story. If you have an opportunity to promote your business,
artwork or event in a publication, it is important that you follow
the right steps to ensure that your image looks its best.
Computer monitors use a smaller number of dots to depict tone,
so the image resolution for web doesn’t need to be as high as
for print.
In short, web images are not a substitute for print images (see
examples below).
Which Format Do I Need?
Each format has a specific use.

Image color formula is key.
*For print, the size (height x width and dpi) is crucial.
Knowing what images to use is critical. Just as a painter uses a
specific brush for a technique, image format is specific to how the
image is finally used.
For web, images are viewed on a computer or laptop screen where
colors are depicted using three primary colors: red, green and
blue. This is referred to as RGB.
Decades ago, printers used physical screens with specific dot
patterns to create tones. (Hence the term “dots per inch” or dpi.)
Smoother tones require more dots per inch. This is known as
resolution, and even with digital printing this is important.

Publications provide specifications for images artists submit.

For print (e.g., publications), colors are broken down by four
colors: cyan (C), magenta (M), yellow (Y) and black (K).
Professional printers use a combination of these four colors to
create the colors seen in a magazine. This is referred to as CMYK.

How To Tell Your Story
1) Don’t talk too much about you and your own organization.
Do talk about who you help: the people in your target
market, your ideal client, the folks you make a difference for.
My company helps business professionals become
better storytellers.
2) Don’t reel off too many numbers and statistics. That’s not a
story. Do talk about what your clients experience when they
work with you, as they go from challenge to success.
Organizations bring us in when they are looking to grow, and
they recognize (sometimes with frustration) that their own team
members aren’t representing them the way they could. So we
work with leaders to inspire their team members to embrace the
idea of being an Ambassador of the organization, and then we
work with team members to tell their organization’s story. We
know we’re done when team members are excited to have grown
in their professional role, and leaders are excited to see business
grow as a result of what their team is doing.
3) Don’t limit it just to dry information. Include feeling
language. Talk about how your clients feel when they need
you the most, and when you’ve taken them where they want
to go.

Perfume Myths That Don’t Pass
the Nose Test
Diane Wissink is a “scent expert.” Owner of La Petite
Parfumerie, a grand European-style perfumery established
in 2003, she has a passion for quality and luxury perfume,
skincare, cosmetics, home fragrance, and bath & body
products from around the world. Located in Edina, La Petite
Parfumerie is a haven for fragrance connoisseurs. Diane agreed
to share some common myths about perfume:
1) A “Signature Scent” makes me unique and sophisticated.
A person wearing the same scent, especially a synthetic
scent, becomes so used to the smell that they don’t notice
it anymore, even though it builds up on their clothes.
“You won’t smell it yourself but everyone else will.” Diane
explains. “It’s better have to a perfume wardrobe. A variety
of scents to fit your variety of experiences and moods.”
2) It doesn’t matter what type of perfume I wear as long as
I love the way it smells on me.
Not necessarily so. If you are purchasing synthetic scents as
opposed to the more natural scents available then you will
most likely find that the initially pleasant fragrance will
gradually change and may actually become unpleasant. In
addition, synthetic fragrances are made with chemicals that

are harmful to you, those around you and the environment.
“Not only do naturally derived fragrances actually smell
better they tend to be more subtle, and less likely to be
offensive to others.”
3) Imitation “knock-offs” are as good as the real thing
Not true. These cheaper perfumes may initially smell
the same, but that pleasant scent won’t last because knockoffs are often made with inferior ingredients. There is
also a greater likelihood of allergic reactions to these
inferior products.

“Beyond Beyond”
“Space Bike”
“Map Bike”
TOSCA’s 2012 “Wisconsin Artist of the Year”,
Gregg Rochester, has spent the last twenty-five years
painting landscapes. He is also an avid bicyclist and
often gets inspirations for his paintings from sojourns
into the Western Wisconsin and Minnesota roadways.
“The Reason”
The earliest part of his career was spent producing
handpainted clothing, so he is no stranger to finding canvases in atypical
places. Thus, the brush-painted bicycle emerged some ten years
ago. Since then, Rochester has produced many themed bicycles
as well as abstract paintings and specialty landscapes from the
cyclist’s point of view to accompany them.
Last summer, he participated in the Minneapolis Institute
of Arts’ “Bicycle Night” and showed some of his creations.
These caught the eye of MIA staff, and he was asked to produce
a one-of-a-kind painted bike to augment the Italian Fashion
1945-Present exhibit. Rochester selected designs from
famed Italian clothing designer, Emilio Pucci to produce the
“Pucci Bike”.
Rochester is a nationally-known painter, who has been featured
in many publications and is collected internationally. His “Tour
d’Art” bicycle art show is planning a European tour. You can

The American Artist Series
T
his issue continues our fourth annual American Artists Series.
Each year we search for art all over the United States, looking
for that special, unique “something” that only talented,
dedicated and inspired artists can provide. As always, our goal
is to bring our readers artists who excel in their work and art
that we believe our readers will truly appreciate.
We look for art that is visually beautiful, emotionally or
spiritually provocative and/or intellectually challenging.
Because we always have the reader in mind we do also consider
the accessibility of the artists and the art. Therefore we also
look for art that we believe the viewer will want to hang in
their home or their place of business; art that can be seen on a
website, and artists that can be reached.
I have learned, after doing this for four years now, that we
are a country filled with talented artists and remarkable
art. Each artist has their own story and while their artistic
ability is impressive, they are not simply defined by their art.
I encourage you to visit their websites, enjoy their art and
read their bios and statements. Some of them have stories as
fascinating as their art. And by all means treat yourself to a
great piece of art!

Timothy Chapman
Arizona Artist of the Year

[email protected]
www.timothychapmanstudio.com
“Invented Natural History” is the
phrase Timothy Chapman uses to
describe his paintings. “Visually,
the work borrows from various
western traditions of depicting
animals and plants, such as Victorian
animal portraiture and old scientific
illustration. I have tried to present similarly earnest, but
basically inaccurate, renderings of animals by using humor,
irony and a surrealistic sensibility that is not available to the
scientist. In this way I attempt to address the sensation of
Wonder, the conflict between the Real and the Imaginary, and
why we accept certain things as True.”
Chapman’s work can be found in various collections around
the world, including those of Phoenix Children’s Hospital,
Denver Children’s Hospital, and the U.S. Embassies in Myanmar
(Burma) and Nairobi, Kenya.

folklore and dreams, by global folk

my sculptures with traditional fiber
techniques, recycled materials, and
mixed media. I like the flat bright
colors found in folk art, as well as the
attention to detail. While living in
China, Hungary and Vietnam, I had
some opportunities to study the local traditional crafts, and
I find them an interesting source for ideas. I recently joined
an international group of Naive artists who work in a folk

this style, while other pieces are nature studies that I have
