Don’t get the Flu
■ Stop missing memorable moments
Consider these top preventative tips:
• Get an annual flu shot. It’s the most
effective way to help prevent the spread of
influenza. For your convenience, you can
get a vaccine at any of the more than 7,800
CVS/pharmacy and 900 MinuteClinic locations across the country. The flu shot is
available every day with no appointment
needed, including evenings and weekends.
As a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, it’s fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance
plans, including Medicare Part B.
• Seniors, take extra precaution.
There’s a high-dose flu shot designed for
those 65 and older, who have a greater risk
of severe illness from the flu.
• Plan ahead: the earlier, the better. It
takes up to two weeks for your immunity
to build up after getting a flu shot. The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone
who is at least 6 months old get a flu shot
as soon as the vaccine is available.
• Stay home if you’re ill. While it may
seem like a no-brainer, two-thirds of employed Americans would still go to work
even if they were feeling ill with flu-like
symptoms. It’s important to understand the
preliminary symptoms of the flu and, if
you experience them, to stay home. This
will help bolster your immune system and
prevent the germs spreading.
• Practice healthy habits. Door handles,
desks and other everyday items are ridden
with germs. Wash your hands frequently
with soap and warm water for at least 20
seconds and avoid touching your mouth
and eyes.
For further information and to find a
nearby store, visit www.cvs.com/flu or
download the CVS/pharmacy mobile app.

Thanksgiving time rolled around again and
once more we were faced with the dilemma of
what to do about it. I did not particularly want
to cook or go to relatives or even visit with
good friends, as it is a family holiday. So we
finally decided to play Bingo and eat out at a
fine restaurant, all of which we discovered
were going to be closed or were already
booked for the holiday. We finally found a
Denny’s that would be open, but they would
not take a reservation for just two so we were
on our own.
We found a Bingo game with no difficulty at
the casino and thought we might also eat there,
as it would be less fuss.
There were not very many people playing
Bingo. The place seemed only about half full.
They had some special games for the holiday.
One I particularly liked was called the “turkey
crow” and was the fourth row across with
spikes coming out of the top. It proved very
difficult and I did not think we were making
any progress when all of a sudden, Kate Bingoed. She likes these crazy games even more
than I do and is very good at them.
“Well, that takes care of dinner,” she said in her
generous way and I felt very blessed to have
such a sweet sister.
As we waited for the next game to be set up,
she said, “I am afraid of dying, you know.”
I could not have been more shocked. “What
made you say that?” I asked.
“Oh, I don’t know. I’ve just been thinking
about it some lately. I am not afraid of the afterlife whatever that may be. I’m just afraid of
the actual act of dying. I don’t want to go. I’m
not ready.”
I was flabbergasted, but the next game came up
and I was forced to concentrate, rather than
think about her startling revelation.
At least this time I was “on” which made me
feel better. The next game was a special—a pie,
with the middle row across and a bent row underneath. I won that one and was very pleased
with myself, but it was too late to offer to buy
dinner. I would save it for a nice Christmas gift
for Kate.
I did not want to return to our previous discussion, but Kate did. “Maybe I can make a deal
with our doctor to knock me out so I won’t
know it is happening,” she mused. “Do you
think he would do that?”
“I think you are likely to outlive him,” I said.
“And who knows what the next generation of
doctors may be like?”
“Well you are no help,” she said, getting a bit
ruffled.
The next game was the Indian Star which I especially like, but requires concentration. It is
the big X with the N row and you would think
that would be easy but it isn’t.
I was finally on when someone else won, but I
wasn’t disappointed. We had each won and
made back our investment plus Kate was buying dinner. I had a lot to be thankful for.
…You might be surprised to learn that
actor David Duchovny, best known for
his role in “The X-Files,” was just a dissertation away from being awarded a
doctorate in English literature.
…In 16th- and 17th-century Europe, it was
considered fashionable to attend public dissections of human bodies. So-called anatomy
days often included music, speeches and
processions. Viewers could even pass
around body parts for inspection, though taking the parts home was forbidden.
…Jimmy Carter was the first American president to be born in a hospital.
…Though the reasons are unclear, researchers have found that children of Mexican descent are less likely to have attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than
children of other ethnicities.
…What do Mark Twain, Thomas Edison,
Noel Coward and Charles Dickens have in
common? None of them ever graduated from
grade school.

Letting Go
The mental and physical space created by
letting go of things that belong in our past
will give us the option to fill that space with
something new. —Susan Fay West
second one in the many years we’ve lived
in our current house. Some people enjoy
these, but Robert and I, not so much. During
the summer of 2014 plus most of this past
summer, I sorted, packed, tagged, bagged,
and generally shifted sh$%%& (you get the
drift) to get ready for a one day sale. I was in
charge of what to keep and what to let go.
Some things were easy such as three toaster
ovens, a crock pot, and myriad Christmas
decorations stored in ten large bins. Harder
to let go were mementoes of our parents. Inside my mom’s purse were condolence cards,
her address book and pill box with pills still
in it, her driver’s license, scarves, and a pair
of gloves. I put her gloves on and gave myself a hug with them. Silly I know since she’s
been gone thirty-two years, but her essence
is still within me. Mom’s birthday, November
23rd, is right before Thanksgiving and I am
so thankful I had her in my life; along with
my father and other family and friends who
have died too soon.
And, speaking of people I am thankful to
have in my life, and since this is my annual
Thanksgiving column, I want to mention
how thankful I am for Tara Snowden, my
publisher; Dick Bajai who encouraged me to
write for her; those who run the bingo games
and their workers and the other players. Plus,
a big thank you to my loyal readers; especially Shirley, Helen, Mary, Marle, and John.
Also, Sandy, David, Donna, Arnold, and my
number one fans Carolyn and Chris. You are
blessings in my life.
But, going back to the aforementioned
yard sale, as I was digging through the boxes
I came across my old bingo bag and inside
were some discarded luckies. There were a
fake spider in a small box; a plastic elephant
with its trunk up, a glass horseshoe emblazoned with four leaf clovers, and a lucky
penny. I guess I discarded them when I was
on one of my frequent losing streaks and decided to change my charms, and thereby
maybe change my luck. However, some
things never change as I’m on another long
losing streak as I write this column. I went
online to find some new strategies and I came
across these three tidbits. First, put three keys
together on one key ring to summon good
health, wealth, and love. Second, keep three
goldfish in an aquarium and good luck will
swim into your life; or keep eight goldfish
and one black one because the black one will
chase away your bad luck. Third, carry a
stick of cinnamon in your purse or wallet to
insure a steady income. Hm-m-m, if that last
one doesn’t bring you income, at least your
purse or wallet will smell nice when opened.
Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you
kisses as you dance out the door with dollars.
Win big. E-mail me at [email protected] and my reply will be forthcoming; right after I recover from stuffing myself
like the turkey on its platter at Thanksgiving
dinner.

An Impressive Salad
Dear Annie,
My husband’s “boss and wife” are
coming to our home for dinner over the
holidays. I would love to serve an unusual
salad with our steak and potato entrée.
Can you suggest a salad that would make
an impression?
Sue Ann from Jonesboro, Arkansas
Dear Sue Ann,
I have enjoyed this salad at a local
restaurant in North Carolina. This recipe is
my take on their very “impressive” salad. It
is delicious. Any combination of greens that
you like can be substituted for the watercress and butter lettuce. —Annie
FIGS, PROSCUITTO AND GOAT
CHEESE SALAD
1 pint Black Mission figs, halved
2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
In a large bowl, combine the olive oil,
balsamic vinegar and rosemary. Season
the dressing with salt and pepper to taste.
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Lay the
figs out on a baking sheet, cut side up, and
drizzle with the melted butter. In a small
bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon
and sprinkle the mixture over the figs.
Roast in the oven until the figs are plump
and juicy and just slightly softened, about
10 minutes. Allow them to cool to room
temperature.
When ready to serve, scatter the watercress and butter lettuce (or arugula) on a
long board or a platter. Place the roasted
figs, cut side up, all over the top of the
greens. Add little chunks of goat cheese all
around the figs. Scatter the thin slices of
prosciutto over the salad. Drizzle some of
your balsamic vinegar over the salad. The
salad should be lightly dressed, not
drenched. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Dear Savvy Senior,
What can you tell me about diabetes and
how can a person know if they have it?
My sister and her husband, who are ages
65 and 63 were both recently diagnosed
with type 2 diabetes and neither had a
clue.
Surprised Sister
Dear Surprised,
It’s called the “silent disease” for a reason. With no significant warning signs,
there are millions of people who have diabetes today that don’t realize it. Here’s
what you should know.
Undiagnosed Epidemic
The diabetes epidemic in the U.S. is
huge, especially among older adults. The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that over 12 million seniors,
age 60 and older—roughly 23 percent of
people in this age group – have diabetes
today, but nearly half of them don’t know
it. The danger of undiagnosed diabetes is
that, left untreated, it increases the risk of
heart disease and stroke and can escalate
into kidney failure, blindness, loss of
limbs and death.
Who’s Vulnerable?
There are a variety of factors that can put
you at risk of getting type 2 diabetes, including your:
Family history: The more relatives you
have with the disease, the higher your risk.
Weight: Being overweight with a body
mass index (BMI) of 25 or more. See
www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi to calculate
your BMI. The heavier you are, the greater
your risk. Also, having excess fat around
your waist, rather than around the hips and
thighs increases your risk.
Age: Your risk increases as you get older,
especially after age 45.
Blood pressure: Having high blood pressure—140/90 or higher.
Cholesterol: Having low HDL (good)
cholesterol under 35 mg/dL or high
triglycerides over 250 mg/dL.
Race: Hispanic, Asian, African or Native
Americans are more vulnerable.
To help you determine your risk, the
American Diabetes Association has a
quick, online quiz you can take for free at
www.diabetes.org/risk-test.jsp.
Symptoms
The tricky thing about diabetes is that
the symptoms (fatigue, increased hunger,
excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, slow
healing cuts or sores, tingling or numbness
in the hands and feet) usually seem harmless, and often don’t appear for years until
significant damage to the blood vessels
has already occurred. That’s why beginning at age 45, everyone should be tested
for diabetes every three years. And you
should get tested annually if you have any
of the previously listed factors that put you
at risk.
The Tests
There are several tests your doctor can
give you to determine whether you have
diabetes including the “fasting blood glucose test “or the “oral glucose tolerance
test,” that require an eight hour fast before
you take it. And the “hemoglobin A1C
test” or “random blood glucose test,” that
can be taken any time regardless of when
you ate.
If you’re reluctant to visit your doctor to
get tested, an alternative is to test yourself.
To do that, go to your pharmacy and buy
a blood glucose monitor (many of them
cost under $20). Fast overnight, and check
your blood sugar in the morning. If your
result is less than 100, you’re OK. But if
your blood glucose is 100 to 125, then you
have prediabetes. And if your reading is
higher than 125, you may have diabetes.
If your reading is above 100, you need to
visit your doctor to develop a plan to get
it under control. In many cases lifestyle
changes like losing weight, exercising,
eating a healthy diet and cutting back on
carbohydrates may be all you need to do
to get your diabetes under control. For others who need more help, many medications are available.
Savvy Tips: Medicare provides free diabetes screenings to seniors with increased
risk factors—see Medicare.gov or call

Q: A while back you wrote that Sharon
Stone was going to star in her own TV series, but I haven’t heard anything about it.
Is it still happening? —Danny T., via
email
A: Oscar-nominee and Golden Globewinner Sharon Stone stars in the new TNT
action drama called Agent X, which premieres Sunday, Nov. 8, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
According to TNT, here’s what the series
is about: In times of extreme crisis, when
traditional law and government aren’t in a
position to help, there is an unseen hand
that works to protect this country and its
citizens from all manner of threats by any
means necessary. Hidden from public
view—and even from the president—
there is a top secret agent (played by Jeff
Hephner) who is trained and ready to
serve, deployed only at the careful discretion of the vice president (played by
Sharon Stone). The series also stars Gerald
McRaney.
Q: Is it true there is going to be another
Harry Potter film? —Patty T., via email
A: Sort of. There’s a new film slated to
open December 2016 that’s set in the
world of Harry Potter; however it’s a spinoff of sorts. It’s called Fantastic Beasts and
Where to Find Them, which was a textbook (featured in the films) that the
prospective wizards had to read at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
J.K. Rowling wrote it under the pseudonym of the fictitious author, Newt Scamander, as tie-in to the Harry Potter
books, and made it available for us Muggles to read.

Betting system
■ Martingale for Blackjack
Many players use the Martingale betting system for blackjack (and other
casino games). The reason is the betting
system is easy to use and seems logical.
You just double your bet after every loss
until you finally win, at which point you
will be ahead by one betting unit. For example, suppose you wager $10 and the results of the next three hands are loss, loss,
and win (L-L-W). Using the Martingale
system, you lost $10 on the first hand, $20
on the second hand, and won $40 on the
third hand. You wind up with a net win of
$10, which is the goal of the progression,
to win an amount equal to your starting
wager.
How can there be anything wrong with
the logic of the Martingale? Just leave the
table after a win and you always walk
away with a profit. Right? Well, yes and
no. Long streaks of consecutive losses will
doom the Martingale player, but pundits
will always counter with “the chance that
this will happen is slim.” Really? Let’s
take a look.
You have about a 52 percent chance of
losing a hand in blackjack (excluding ties).
The chance that you will lose, say, ten
consecutive (resolved) hands is 0.145 percent, meaning you will average one sequence of ten losing hands (excluding ties)
in about every 692 sequences of ten hands,
and so, this losing streak will occur about
once in every seven hours of play (assuming you play 100 resolved hands per hour).
And get this…you don’t know when that
string of ten consecutive losses will occur
in the seven hours (of course, it may not
occur at all). The math says that you have
roughly a 12 percent chance of losing ten
in a row in the first hour; a 24 percent in
the first two hours; and a whopping 51
percent chance after only five hours (i.e.,
you are the favorite to have had at least
one losing streak of 10 resolved hands!).
Sadly for Martingale bettors, a streak of
ten consecutive losses is not such a rare
event after all.
What about all those frequent winning
sessions that Martingale players (and system sellers) always tout about this system?
The fact is this: although most players will
walk away a small winner most of the
time, the money you will lose in that one
catastrophic losing session will more than
completely wipe out all the money that
you will win in your more frequent winning sessions. In the long run, your wins
and losses will add up to the casino’s edge,
and the amount of money that you will
lose using the Martingale betting system
will be close to the casino’s theoretical
edge in the game, times the total amount
of money that you wagered, the same as it
is for every other player who plays blackjack (except card counters). In other
words, mathematically speaking, you
can’t, and you won’t, gain the advantage
over the casino using a Martingale betting
system.
There is another more practical issue
with the Martingale that also dooms most
players who use it, and it’s this: on an extended losing streak, you may not be able
to double-up your bets because you will
bump up against the maximum betting
limit imposed by casinos. For example,
suppose you are a $5 bettor and you lose
eight (resolved) hands in a row. Your
losses at this point total $1,275 (gulp!).
Assuming you have the bankroll (and the
guts) to double up again, your next wager
according to the Martingale is $1,280,
which exceeds the $1,000 table-betting
limit (that you’ll find in most casinos on
low-limit tables). Unfortunately, there is
no way for the progressive bettor to bet
enough to recoup his losses when this occurs (other than to move to a higher-limit
table).

I love testing new food products and
kitchen appliances. I’ve selected two of
my favorites from a new line of Crock-Pot
appliances for this gift-giving guide.
The Crock-Pot revolution started in
August 1970 with a simple bean-cooker:
a glazed brown crock liner, white steel
housing and aluminum lid. By associating
the crockery liner with its pot-like shape,
out came the name Crock-Pot. This slow
cooker introduced a new category of appliances and revolutionized the way
Americans cooked for their families.
Crock-Pot products are time-savers, energy-savers, space-savers and are reasonably priced. They’re the perfect gift and
come in a variety of sizes and colors.
I was amused to find that a recent holiday meal-preparation survey listed the inability to serve all of the food at the same
temperature at the same time as the No. 1
fear of home cooks! I’ve often struggled
to get a huge family holiday meal on the
table. This year, my worries are over,
thanks to The Crock-Pot Hook Up Connectable Entertaining System (MSRP:
$39.99-$49.99), which completely replaces the old chafing dishes, sterno cans,
tea-lights and buffet-table clutter!
The new system features individual
slow-cooker units that connect by plugging into each other to create an impressive entertaining spread that can be
customized to suit groups of any size. Up
to six units can hook up using a single outlet, and all may be used together or apart.
Connectable units are sold individually
or as a kit, so you can mix and match units
to create your own system. They include
a round 2-quart cooker, an oval 3.5-quart
cooker and an oval 2-by-1-quart double
cooker. Each unit has individual low, high
and warm manual settings, and all removable stoneware and lids are dishwasher
safe. They also are stackable for easy storage.
My second gift choice from Crock-Pot
is the new LunchCrock Food Warmer
(MSRP: $24.99). It holds up to 20 ounces
of food and warms while you work for delicious on-the-go meals that are ready
when you are. Convenience food now can
be as warm, comforting and flavorful as
home cooking. This handy gadget heats
low and slow to transform leftovers,
soups, oatmeal and any number of favorites into meals away from home. My
husband takes his lunch to work with him
and often eats in the car while running er-
rands. We were limited to what we could
pack in his lunch bag until I discovered the
LunchCrock. There’s a plug adapter in our
car, so my husband can have a hot lunch
whether he’s in the car or at his desk. Handling is easy thanks to a spill-proof lid,
cool-touch exterior and cord storage. The
removable food-storage container and lid
are dishwasher safe.
Another Crock-Pot innovation is the
Versaware line of slow cookers that allow
you to sauté, cook, serve, store and reheat
all in one pot.
If you’re fortunate enough to receive a
new Crock-Pot as a gift, try this wonderful
recipe for Sweet and Sour Chicken. Happy
holidays!
SWEET AND SOUR CHICKEN
You can place the marinade and the chicken in a
sealed bag, refrigerate it overnight, and then place
all of the ingredients in the Crock-Pot the next day,
if desired.
1
whole chicken (cut into 8 pieces; breast
split), or if preferred, 8 chicken breasts or 8 chicken
thighs or any combination of 8 pieces
1
teaspoon salt
1
teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
cup vegetable oil
1/4
1
(13-ounce) jar orange marmalade
1
(20-ounce) can pineapple chunks and
juice
tablespoons soy sauce
3
3
tablespoons BBQ sauce
3
tablespoons rice vinegar
1/2
cup water
2
teaspoons red chile flakes
2
cloves garlic, chopped
1
inch fresh ginger (peeled and sliced into
coins)
1
bunch green onions, green and white
parts—white parts roughly chopped; green parts
sliced on bias
Combine salt, pepper, oil, marmalade, pineapple
chunks and juice, soy sauce, BBQ sauce, vinegar,
water, chilé flakes and ginger together in a bowl,
and whisk to combine. Pour the sauce over the
chicken. Cook for 2-3 hours on high or 5-6 hours on
low. Serve chicken with sauce over rice. Garnish
with the sliced green onions.
You also can make any leftovers into a delicious
chicken taco by shredding the chicken meat, folding
it into warm tortillas, and topping with lettuce, avocado and a drizzle of the remaining sauce.

Those Fascinating
Bingo Patterns
As you may know, if you are a regular
reader of this column, I often play Bingo
at a small hall where everyone gets one
card. And, as I have said before, the concept of playing ONE card is a turn-off for
a lot of people. Bingo halls don’t like the
concept for obvious reasons…the more
cards they sell the more profit they make.
Many players think that the concept of
playing an entire evening with a single
card is silly. Many of these people, though,
feel that way because they are more into
enhancing their chances of winning and
not really enjoying the game.
Anyway, the other night, while playing
the coverall, I started to realize that the
squares I was marking were starting to
make a pattern. At one point, I had a
checkerboard. The top, middle and bottom
numbers in the “B” row were marked.
There was a similar pattern in the “N” and
“O” rows. The “I” and “G” rows had two
numbers marked…one down from the top
on each card and one up from the bottom.
I could not believe my eyes. How in
Heaven’s name could I have a card where
the numbers that were being called actually formed a perfect pattern? What were
the odds? Well, I would assume that the
odds of this happening could not be successfully calculated.
For, you see, some of the real magic of
Bingo is its complete randomness. Not
only is it having the right numbers on your
card, it’s having them in the right place.
How many times have you thought:
“Gosh, if I could only move that number
to another place in the row I could have a
Bingo?”
If you remember, in the column where
I talked about the early history of Bingo, I
mentioned that a mathematician who was
given the job of finding all the combinations of numbers on Bingo cards had gone
stark raving mad. I don’t doubt it. I am not
good enough with numbers to even worry
about all of this. But, I do know I was
amazed when that pattern emerged on my
card.
And…one other thing, when the coverall was finally won—by a lady sitting next
to me—there were only three numbers left
in the cage. I needed one of them. And that
brings up another question: In a hall with
70 people how could it have taken that
long before someone won at Bingo?
I welcome your comments (to [email protected]). What has been your
experience with odd patterns and shapes?
By the way, does your Bingo hall play a
“Letter X” game? I love that game and I
hate it.
Next time: Your least-favorite numbers.

Cincinnati Bingo
WCPO-9 in Cincinnati got involved in
a campaign to encourage residents to find
and share new and interesting places and
things to do in the Queen City. “Search the
hashtag #UnlockCincinnati on social
media to discover hidden gems, or use it
yourself to lead others to the treasures you
find,” the Unlock Cincinnati team proposed. To get people started, the team also
created a Bingo card of places recommended by others. “Some of these paths
are well worn, while others remain to be
discovered. Go to them, see something
new, and take a picture and hashtag it for
others to find on social media.” The first
15 people to complete Bingo received a
#UnlockCincinnati T-shirt. You can visit
facebook.com/unlockcincinnati on the
web to see the Bingo card as well as examples of places participants recommended.
Teriyaki Bingo
More than 1,500 people turned out for
the Maryknoll Karate Club of Los Angeles’s 30th annual Chicken Teriyaki and
Bingo Fundraiser at St. Francis Xavier
Japanese Catholic Center in Little Tokyo.
The event featured Maryknoll’s famous
barbecued chicken teriyaki, made from a
recipe handed down through many generations and regarded by chicken teriyaki
fans as some of the best tasting anywhere.
The cash Bingo game attracted novice and
veteran players alike, who competed for
generous cash pots and free raffle prizes
between games.
Healthy Bingo
The Randolph Cancer Center in Asheboro, North Carolina, hosted a fun and
unique round of health-themed Bingo last
month in the private dining room at Randolph Hospital. The event was open to
anyone who wished to enjoy a night out
and play Bingo for the opportunity to win
great prizes, including movie passes, zoo
tickets and gift cards. The event was designed to highlight the importance of
mammograms, increase breast cancer
awareness and address common questions
surrounding these topics. Except for skin
cancers, breast cancer is the most common
cancer among American women.
Canadian Bingo
In a bid to attract more players to the
last remaining Bingo hall in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, Bingo Country Holdings
Ltd. completely overhauled its building
and added new attractions, the most significant of which is adding electronic
Bingo. A lounge featuring elegant chandeliers, a baby grand piano, two fireplaces
and 30 electronic break-open ticket machines was created, and the restaurant and
restrooms were updated. An adjacent
Bingo room was redone, with new tables,
carpet, a stage, and touch screen electronic
Bingo added. Traditional Bingo paper and
dauber gaming is still very much a part of
the hall’s offerings. Since the introduction
of eBingo and the physical makeover of
nearly three dozen halls in Ontario, the industry has reversed a decline in business,
increasing as much as 18% per year.

Dear Aunt Bingo,
I had the unique experience of getting
Bingo on two different cards at the same
time. There was a second winner who also
Bingoed. I assumed that because I had two
winners and she had one, I would get twothirds of the jackpot, which was $250. But
they only gave me $125 and gave the other
winner the other $125. I am very disappointed because I think I should have gotten more of the prize. Do you think this is
right? —Shelley L., Washington, via
email
Dear Shelley,
I am sorry to hear that your excitement
at winning Bingo was overshadowed by
the feeling that you were not paid fairly.
And after getting Bingo on two cards at
once? I cannot begin to imagine the odds
of that happening!
While it is logical that you would expect
your payout to be more, the fact is the
Bingo hall split the winnings correctly.
While regulations differ from state to
state, it is my understanding that, nationwide, it is generally understood that it is
not a Bingo card that wins, but the person
who is playing the card. So even if you did
Bingo on two cards, you are still one person and only receive one person’s share of
the jackpot—in this case 50 percent.
Looking on the bright side, $125 is still
a nice little bundle of cash to take home at
Dear Aunt Bingo,
My husband and I will be taking an extended vacation to the Carolinas this winter, and when I mentioned to him that I
needed to remember to pack my Bingo
bag, he got very annoyed.
He said that Bingo is something I do all
the time at home and that while we are visiting a different place I should be doing
different things besides sitting in a Bingo
hall.
I really want to try playing Bingo in the
Carolinas, just to see if it is any different
from playing at home. But I see his
point—travel is about seeing and doing
different things and maybe I should put
Bingo on hold during the trip. What is
your opinion about going to Bingo while
on vacation? —T.C., Pennsylvania, via
email
Dear T.C.,
I agree with your husband that going
away on vacation is an opportunity to see
and do new and interesting things, but
who is to say that a Bingo outing during
that out-of-town trip can’t be one of them?
Whenever I travel I like to keep an eye
out for Bingo signs posted along roadsides. It’s fun to mix in with fellow vacationers and local people at an unfamiliar
Bingo hall. And picking up a jackpot is a
nice way to take the sting out of all those
post-vacation bills!
My suggestion is that you pack your
Bingo bag and wait for a rainy day when
your husband decides to stay in and plants
himself in front of the TV. Once he is nice
and comfy, Google yourself a nearby
Bingo hall, grab your Bingo bag and the
car keys and head out the door.
If he gives you grief, simply point out
that him sitting in front of the TV is just
as much an “at-home” activity as you
playing Bingo. You can even invite him
along! —Aunt Bingo

Las Vegas Club Dealttt
The 86-year-old Las Vegas Club was
purchased, then closed less than a week
later, by Derek and Greg Stevens, owners
of the Golden Gate and the D. While details of the deal weren’t made public, published records indicate that the selling
price was $40 million. The Stevens’
bought the land and the building, but not
the gaming business or the casino’s name,
and are now assessing their options.
Terrible’s Road House
The former Gold Strike in Jean is now
Terrible’s Road House. The biggest
change thus far (even the signs haven’t
been switched out yet) is the opening of a
Denny’s that replaces the buffet.
The LINQ Rebranding
Caesars Entertainment has completed
the $223 million rebranding of The LINQ.
Along with an overhaul of the casino,
lobby, and pool area, all 2,253 hotel rooms
have been renovated and equipped with inroom technology to help guests better navigate the resort.
Tropicana Remake
After declaring that it would spruce
up the Tropicana to the tune of about
$20 million after buying it in May, Penn
National Gaming now says it could
spend $200 million+ over two to four
years in a massive remake of the property. That said, it’s not expected that
anything significant will happen immediately, as other Penn projects will apparently take precedence.the rings.
Mirage Not on the Market
In an earnings call, MGM Resorts International CEO Jim Murren stated that
the Mirage “is not on the market” in response to reports from LVA and other
sources that a sale was in the works. As
of now, a sale has not materialized.

he had this dream and apply which symbols fit his situation. It sounds like he
might be upset about something – perhaps financial troubles? I hope this is not
a sensitive issue, but perhaps an enlightening discussion will be the result. —

Winning Dreams
Dear Dream Lady,
My son, Elmer, called a few minutes
ago. In his dream somebody gave him a
check for $3,500. It is a brown paper
check with red ink handwritten on it.
What does this mean? Help! He always
calls when he dreams because he wins in
Bingo sometimes. We appreciate your
help.
Joy & Elmer P., Las Vegas, Nevada
Dear Joy & Elmer.
I think you have written before so thank
you for your readership. This dream has
two elements. The first part—a check for
$3,500 is wishful thinking—which is one
reason we dream. There’s nothing wrong
with that. The second part features the
colors – brown has two symbols, one is
your ability to trust your gut, the other is
signals low spirits; red means passion,
anger or danger. It can also mean life,
and ironically, death. Elmer needs to recall what was going on in his life when
Dear Dream Lady,
Lately I have been reading a lot of science fiction so maybe that is affecting
my dreams? I dreamed that I was on a
lush green planet with a team of people
who I did not get along with. We were
whacking our way through a thick tangle
of vines that were reaching out and trying to choke some of the people. It was
horribly hot. There were lots of odd creatures running in the trees above us and
screeching horribly. I don’t think I was
upset when I woke up, but I was disoriented. What does this mean?
Heather S., Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Dear Heather,
The spaceship and planet tell me you are
taking on big challenges that you aren’t
sure you are capable of completing to
your satisfaction because the people you
don’t get along with are parts of yourself! The plants and animals are more
obstacles that you will have to overcome.
It sounds like you don’t have confidence
in completing a difficult project. If you
truly feel the challenge is beyond yours
skills, either fess up to your manager that
you need help or quickly learn the skills
to overcome the challenges and take
charge of this situation. —Dream Lady
