We will use the teachings and practices that have been given to us from the Buddha through Thich Nhat Hanh. Joanne Friday, a Dharma teacher in the Tiep Hien Order, will lead this retreat. She received authority to teach from Thich Nhat Hanh, who has been her teacher for more than 20 years. Joanne says that the Dharma is the greatest gift she has ever received and her greatest joy is passing it on. Format The retreat is residential, with periods of sitting and walking meditation and daily dharma talks by our teacher. The purpose of the retreat is inner transformation, a process that is best supported by noble silence. We will maintain silence during the retreat, including during mealtimes and work meditation. Work assignments help us practice mindfulness while being active with our hands. We will break our silence occasionally for Dharma sharing and singing. Lodging Camp Aldersgate is located in northwestern Rhode Island on 233 acres of wooded land with a retreat center overlooking a lake. The camp has dormitory-style rooms (three to seven occupants per room). Most beds are either single beds or lower bunks, but there are some upper bunks. If there are physical reasons why you are unable to sleep in an upper bunk, please note this on your registration. Please plan to bring your own pillow, bedding and towels. Linen rental is available, as noted on the registration form. There is no reduced rate for commuters. Food Vegetarian meals will be provided. Please indicate any food allergies on your registration form. We have access to a refrigerator for those with special needs. Retreat cost and scholarships The cost for food and a room with four to seven people for the five-day retreat is $285. The cost for food and a lower bunk or single bed in a room with no more than three people is $335. We offer assistance to those who cannot afford the full cost of the retreat. Registration and application for scholarships must be received by April 1 for full consideration. Retreat cost does not include dana for our teacher. Dana (generosity to our teacher) In the Buddhist tradition, the teachings are given freely because they are considered priceless; as students, we practice dana by making monetary offerings to our teachers. Dana is not payment for goods or services rendered; it is given from the heart. Your generosity is a gift that supports not just our teacher, but also the Sangha, the larger Dharma community, and your own practice. The cost of the retreat covers food and lodging only. For fully employed people, a donation of $200 to Joanne is suggested in addition to the cost for food and lodging. Check-In 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16. The retreat ends at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20.
