VICKI’S CORNER
A warm hello to everyone
and welcome to the new
members.
Barbara and I attended the Annual Community Educator’s
Conference in Wellington the last week of July. This year it was for 2
& ½ days-pretty full on 9am-5pm. I would like to thank the
committee for funding this trip. It was great to network with all the
Community Educators from around New Zealand, find out what
happens in other areas. I do think we are quite fortunate in the north
with the variety of groups on offer.
Due to space constraints I thought I would talk about 4 of the
presentations. Dr Louise Parr-Brownlee a Neurophysiologist from
the Otago Brain Health Research Centre in Dunedin on her research
on Optogenetics. This is a type of brain science of combining fibre
optics and genetics. The research is currently been done on rats
which was very interesting. Louise has been researching connections
between the Basal Ganglia, Motor Thalmus and Motor Cortex for
approximately 14yrs.
We all did a Poster Presentation of which there were some great
topics and really good presentations of which some will eventually
be available as a resource for us all. I did support groups that are
available in Northland for our clients highlighting the subsidized
exercise groups available to all clients in Northland.
Mark Simpson a Neurologist from Auckland Hospital spoke about
the Apomine Treatment in conjunction with Pip Acock the
Pharmacuetical Rep. This tends to help clients whose oral
medications no longer manage their symptons, particularly on/off
periods. Pip may attend one of our Whangarei Support Meetings
later this year. It is good to learn about other treatments that could
benefit people with Parkinson’s.
Rachel Horwell a Physiotherapist from Wellington did a very
interactive presentation on Dance for Parkinson’s Disease. She
attended a 2 day workshop in New York and decided to set it up in
Wellington. We did this while sitting so most people with
Parkinson’s are able to do it. It was mainly based around big
movements but done to music was quite entertaining and fun.
Don’t forget to contact me for any advice or support. I am available
Mon-Fri 9am-5pm

Have you and your whānau experience
barriers in accessing health and
disability services?
Be a part of a ground breaking piece of research:

Are you the age of 18 years or over?

Do you have a disability (hauātanga)?

Would you and your whānau like to share
your overall experiences and access to
health and disability services?

If you answered YES to any of these
questions, you may be eligible to participate
in this research.
The purpose of this research is to look at the health
and disability experiences of whānau hauā (Maori
with disabilities) and their whānau (family)...
All whānau hauā and their whānau are welcome.
You may also enjoy the chance to meet with others
who have had similar experiences to you when we do
our feedback hui at the end of the research.
For whānau interview, travel support, NZSL sign
language interpreters and accessible venues will be
provided for at the interviews. You and your
whānau will also be compensated for your time.
By doing this research I hope gain an insight and
better understanding of barriers for whānau hauā
and their whānau too accessing health and disability
services.
