DIR ECTOR’ S NOTES - DAVID CECSARINI & JONATHAN SMOOTS
A Riot Is Not The Beginning Of Events; It Is The Result.
As a kid growing up in Brookfield, I can remember our kitchen’s buoyant, morning air
being filled with news, weather and traffic reports from WISN radio, punctuated by
corny comical interludes from Charlie Hansen and his pal, Shaky. How jarring it was,
then, to listen to the alarmed reports on the morning of July 31, 1967, recounting
Milwaukee’s downtown riot activity that had erupted the night before. Equally
disturbing, we would hear of continuing upheaval occurring throughout the next
week, and the next 200 days of demonstrations.
From my sheltered, 13-year old vantage point, I hadn’t the knowledge or experience to
understand the history, the reasons and the implications for what was going on. Being
a suburban white kid, the issues of equal housing, employment opportunities and
access to good schools did not resonate with me. I didn’t know.
I imagine there are many young people (and older too) similar to me living all across
the country who had heard reports about Watts in 1965, and would hear about
Detroit, Buffalo, Minneapolis, Newark, Cincinnati in ‘67; Chicago, Baltimore, D.C.
in 1968; LA in 1992; Ferguson and Baltimore in 2014 and ‘15.
Throughout her career, Anna Deavere Smith has asked a whole lot of people, a whole
lot of questions. As a theatre artist, she has pursued her need to know with dedicated,
driven passion. She has shared her subjects’ unique perspectives – the unfiltered
thoughts and feelings of hundreds of real people – on the theatre stage.
Delivered by the six courageous and talented actors you will see in this performance,
we offer TWILIGHT as a heart-stirring resource from which we can know more. If
we are to live together in prosperous proximity, we must know more.
