Bartlett Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 ANTHEM (nrsv, page 110 NT) Psalm 1 (2015) John Weaver Blessed are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked. Blessed are those who do not take the path that sinners tread. Blessed are those who do not sit in the seat of the scoffers. But their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on that law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water which yield their fruit in due season. Their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. (Psalm 1:1-3) Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Marianne Weaver, flute; John Weaver, conductor This anthem is dedicated to the Rev. Dr. Fred R. Anderson on the occasion of his retirement. LESSON FOR YOUNG CHRISTIANS Dr. Anderson DISMISSAL TO CHILDREN’S WORSHIP (The children will return to the Sanctuary at the Doxology to participate in Communion. Or, if the children and young people wish, they may remain in the Sanctuary to participate in the rest of the service. Children three and under may be taken to the Nursery on the 4th Floor or remain here with their parents. The Narthex and the Children’s Library, adjacent to the Sanctuary, are available should the youngest become fussy.) EPISTLE LESSON GRADUAL 1 John 5:9-13 (nrsv, page 227 NT) Donald B. Wahlig Your Word Is a Lamp (2012) Andrew Henderson Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Give me understanding that I may live. (Psalm 119:105, 107b) GOSPEL LESSON John 17:6-19 (nrsv, page 105 NT) 4 Ms. Bartlett SERMON “Departing Requests” *HYMN 442 The Church’s One Foundation Dr. Anderson Aurelia *THE NICENE CREED Ms. Loftis We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated on the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father (and the Son), who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH Dr. Anderson SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CONGREGATION Ms. Bartlett Elder Richard W. Iverson PRESENTATION OF THE OFFERING OFFERTORY ANTHEM Greater Love Hath No Man (1911) John Ireland (1879-1962) Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. Love is strong as death. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Who his own self bore our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus; ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. That ye should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies, a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. We’re glad you’ve joined us for worship today. We pray that you experience Christ in our midst, and that his presence will sustain you in the week ahead. We invite you to place your name and contact information on one of the pew pads. If our pastors can assist you in some special way, indicate this in the space provided and they will be in touch with you. If you are considering becoming Christian or looking for a church home, our pastors would be delighted to talk with you about it. We urge you to consider becoming a member of this congregation and hope you will make MAPC your church home in this city. Children are especially welcome in our worship services. If your child becomes restless, you may wish to take them to the Narthex where they will have some room to move about, or to the Youth Library adjacent to the Sanctuary, where you may still hear the service. Parents who prefer childcare for infants and children through age three will find our Nursery on the 4th Floor. A greeter will be glad to assist you. MAPC Mission Statement The mission of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church is to bring people into the transforming presence of Jesus Christ through worship, teaching the Word, Christian nurture, and ministry in and to the world.
