Please join us if your schedule will allow. The Mission Society of Faith Lutheran Church of West St. Louis County — will be meeting this Wednesday evening (8/28) at 6:30 pm. Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend. Also, begin thinking and praying about ways and opportunities for our congregation to be actively involved in carrying out the great privilege that our Savior has given to each of us as individuals and corporately as a congregation to be His ambassadors here on earth. We have such Good News to share! As a reminder, the stated purpose of our Mission Society is to... ...provide an avenue through which God’s children may enlist their prayers, time, talents, and treasures to the spread of God’s Word wherever and whenever He provides the opportunity. We will encourage each other to respond faithfully to the Great Commission by meeting regularly to: 1) Study God’s Word. 2) Train and encourage each other in sharing God’s Word. 3) Pray for each other and the outreach efforts of our congregation. 4) Encourage and support mission efforts beyond our local community. 5) Stay informed about the mission work of our church body. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. Proverbs 9:10 Faith Lutheran Church of West St. Louis County Pastor Todd H. Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Pastor: O Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Pastor and Congregation: O most merciful God, who has given Your only begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen Absolution from Our God Pastor: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given us His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives all our sins. To them that believe on His name He gives power to become the sons of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. Amen 2 Announcements Our Schedule Welcome — to our guests and visitors who worshipped with us today. Please return and worship with us again. Please sign our guest book. The Prayer for the Day Scripture Readings Epistle Reading Ephesians 4:30-5:2 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you. 1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. (The New King James Version. 1982. Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.) Hymn 50—Lord, Dismiss Us 6 3 Gospel Reading John 6:41-51 The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” 42 And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, “Do not murmur among yourselves. 44 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 “It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. 46 “Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. 48 “I am the bread of life. 49 “Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 “This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” (The New King James Version. 1982. Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.) Confession of Faith The Apostolic Creed I BELIEVE… in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pi4 late, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the Holy Christian Church, the Communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen Hymn 427:1-4 — How Firm a Foundation Sermon Text I Kings 19:1-8 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” 3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the desert. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for 5
