Most importantly, we learned about a country deeply scarred by the choices of leadership in the last century. But God is not dead, He is alive! He is using the Christians in Cambodia to powerfully impact their local community. (Rhiannon Gamboa, Team Leader) Summer is a time of milestones in the life of a teenager. Incoming high school freshmen are transitioning to becoming low man on the totem pole. The graduating seniors are starting a new chapter in their lives as college students, employees or perhaps soldiers. Other milestones that occur in the life of high school student are the passing of proficiency tests, the taking of the SAT and ACT, Prom, and even moving from JV to Varsity. What if there are ways to include milestones in our youth ministries? Here are some ideas that came out of an article for creating these milestones. 9th Grade Discipleship: Place each teen into a discipleship group that lasts for the rest of high school. 10th Grade Gifting: Offer a spiritual gifts class to help teens discern how their passions, natural gifting, and spiritual gifts work together as God’s calling to serve. Work to place each student in roles in our church serving alongside your adults. 11th Grade Retreat: Build two spiritual retreats that encourage students to recharge during their craziest year of high school, as well as help train them in deeper spiritual disciplines and prepare for their senior year and beyond. 12th Grade Commissioning: Create a monthly class for seniors to help them think through their spiritual life after high school. At the end of the year, students are asked to invite friends and family to a barbeque celebration honoring all seniors. During this time, seniors thank friends and family for helping them develop as a Christian, and are invited to share the testimonies of their spiritual journeys. On the following Sunday, the church community commissions students into the next phase of their spiritual life in a special ceremony. Sacramento Cordova : Mexico We held a VBS with 320 children. Each child received a New Testament, educational products, and hygiene supplies. In the evening, we formed basketball teams ending in a tournament the last night, led worship, gave a message, and showed Christian films in Spanish.
