FRANCESCA VON HABSBURG ON HER CHARTER FOR CHANGE ISA YACHTS’ 32-KNOT HYBRID Beauty SILVER WIND by Design STEADY AS SHE GOES Global Order Book numbers revealed plus 24 HOLIDAY Gift Ideas DECEMBER 2014 /JANUARY 2015 $9.00 ON BOARD: DUNIA BARU In the land of dragons THE ULTIMATE FLOATING SPA 240' Vitruvius Grace E A BOAT INTERNATIONAL MEDIA PUBLICATION SILVER WIND At first glance, there’s no doubt CONTEMPORARY YET NOT COLD, FAST BUT ALSO EFFICIENT, SILVER WIND IS FAR MORE THAN WHAT FIRST MEETS THE EYE. TEXT BY KATE LARDY PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF BROWN AND MARK SIMS/SUPERYACHT MEDIA 64 SHOWBOATS INTERNATIONAL that Silver Wind, one of the latest launches from ISA Yachts, is a good-looking yacht. She has bold and dramatic exterior lines by Andrea Vallicelli with a sparkling silver paint job that’s carried all the way to the top of the radar mast. Balancing the vast outdoor spaces is a serene interior by Nuvolari Lenard that makes beautiful use of natural colors, warm woods and textural details. The yard executed all details to perfection. But this 143-foot yacht’s real beauty lies beyond what you see. From the propulsion system that allows her to plane at 32 knots or run silently on 24 gallons of fuel per hour, to her cutting-edge variable speed generators, custom I-Bridge integrated with Transas and iPad-controlled entertainment, Silver Wind offers much more than pleasing aesthetics. Her owners’ experience shows. They have another ISA, a 154-foot full-displacement yacht currently traveling the world, so they commissioned Silver Wind to run locally in the Mediterranean and do occasional charters. Their layout choices improve functionality for their lifestyle, while offering a strict guest-crew separation. The main deck is the owners and guests’ domain. Instead of the typical position amidships, the dining table is close to the aft deck entrance, giving guests privacy along with extra good views. The circular table offers flexible seating for six, eight or 12, thanks to extensions hidden in the walls when not in use. To service the dining table, a passageway from the lower- SHOWBOATS INTERNATIONAL 65 silver wind || 143' ISA deck crew quarters and galley exits behind the salon’s port-side bar, affording the crew convenient access. And crew are just an iPad touch away. A crew-call function is part of a system by Videoworks that integrates all the audio-visual, lifestyle and entertainment systems on board. Silver Wind is a showcase of Videoworks’ capabilities. The entire yacht from the guest point of view is controlled by iPad, from the Apple TV, Kaleidescape, photo streaming and iTunes to the lights, curtains and air conditioning. It also encompasses Airplay, which enables the owner and guests to listen to their favorite music playlists or watch their personal videos and photos wirelessly anywhere on the yacht. All 11 iPad controls, Airplay, Internet and Voice over IP run on a unique wireless net with guaranteed coverage on all decks. Furthermore, Videoworks created different hierarchy profiles on that net for owner, guests and crew. For example, if the owner is working on board he will be connected to the fast VSAT while the crew are seamlessly shifted to the slower mobile broadband. The owner’s suite, forward on the main deck, offers a surprise. It is bi-level and connects the bedroom via a private staircase to a lower-deck wellness room. With its side-opening balcony, the room can be set up for massage, exercise or even as a hair salon. This leaves just three guest staterooms on the lower deck, but they lack for nothing. The forward VIP is exceptionally spacious, its bed surrounded with a stunning display of golden tiles. Two further very comfortable guest cabins are to port. One standout feature in all of the staterooms is the mosaic artistry on display in each shower and on a feature wall opposite the master’s vanity. This is not production tile work. Artists from the Italian company Sicis chose and hand-placed each tile. Vibrant displays of tiles in the showers and marbles of azul macauba, rosa Portugal or cipollino Greco give each guest suite its subtle color theme. As the yacht’s style needed to appeal to different tastes for charter, designer Valentina Zannier of Nuvolari Lenard created 66 SHOWBOATS INTERNATIONAL silver wind || 143' ISA a calm and sophisticated milieu using light fabrics and rich carpets. “I looked for a balance and harmony with high-quality materials and design details,” she says. Recurring themes, such as Lalique accents and Hermes silk wall panels in the early 1900s’ straw marquetry style of Jean-Michel Frank, add interest and texture. Canaletto walnut with touches of high-gloss ebony feature on the main deck while the lower deck uses rosewood prominently with upholstered doors of galuchat. The crew quarters are in a comfortable position amidships. Between them and the engine room is the tender garage that snugly fits an 18-foot Castoldi RIB tender, launched through a portside opening. As two Jet Skis are stowed in aft compartment sport and starboard, the outdoor decks are free for guest use. The top deck is particularly resort-like with vast sunpads, a Jacuzzi, a good-sized bar and a dining table under a hard top, which blends seamlessly into the superstructure. For easy water access, the swim platform includes an electric/hydraulic platform by Pressmair that extends from the transom and lowers into the sea. Through the garage is access to the engine room, where Silver Wind’s hidden nature is revealed. The development of her propulsion actually pre-dates the yacht. Siemens and ISA Yachts have been working together since 2009 to engineer this system that is unique in the true sense of the word—it’s the first time waterjets and hybrid propulsion have been combined in a yacht. And that’s not even considering the variable-speed generators, which are only just beginning to appear on yachts. Silver Wind can run in conventional mode with two MTU diesels driving two Kamewa waterjets through reduction gearboxes. these pages The salon is divided into three distinct areas with the TV viewing area forward (below) and the dining area near the aft deck (opposite). The custom table reflects the radial wooden marquetry below it and the chandelier above it. But also connected to the gearboxes are Siemens electric motors that can power the waterjets with the main engines off. Moreover, these electric motors also work as shaft generators during conventional cruising so the diesel generators can be switched off. This is because the gearboxes aren't typical; ZF cooperating with Siemens developed them with a Power Take In/Take Out (PTI/PTO) function. When the MTUs are driving the waterjets, Silver Wind can reach 32 knots and cruises at 26 knots. In electric mode only the diesel generators are running, offering quiet cruising at eight knots and fuel consumption of just 24 gallons per hour. Reduced fuel consumption is not the only advantage. The flexible system also offers incredible redundancy, which allows the mains and generators to run fewer hours per year, thus reducing maintenance. The next innovation in the engine room is the variable-speed generators. A standard setup connects generators directly to the board network, which means they must run at constant speed. On Silver Wind, the Siemens power-management system acts as a “middleman” able to translate variable speed into a frequency usable by the board. “This is the real advantage and innovation,” says Saverio Mottana, head of Marine and Shipbuilding at Siemens. These generators will always run at optimal speed for the load, which reduces emissions and fuel consumption. Less noise is another plus. At times when the power demand is lower, such as at anchor, the generators can operate at reduced speed, generating less noise, which in turn, increases overall comfort. Silver Wind’s other heart of operations, the bridge shows another first—an integration of the custom I-Bridge by Team Italia with technology by navigation specialist Transas. The control system creates a dialogue between the I-Bridge and Transas system allowing them to reach optimal functionality. Team Italia’s proprietary I-Bridge concept combines all navigation, engine data and controls, monitoring and security into one personalized, intuitive system. It uses a series of processors that operate differently SCENE SELECTION For lighting, Videoworks chose Lutron with the Dali control for more scene flexibility, future-proofing and robustness without complex cabling. Any owner, project manager or engineer tasked with setting up programmed lighting levels knows how long a process this can be at commissioning time. Videoworks pioneered an overlay program with 3D design of the various rooms that simulates various lighting modes—Welcome, Relax and Night—to let the owner view expected results in advance to speed up the programming process. – MARILYN MOWER SHOWBOATS INTERNATIONAL 67 silver wind || 143' ISA NO.NOISE BUBBLE these pages The master suite on the main deck (opposite) connects via a private staircase to a wellness room (above). This room features a sideopening terrace, putting the owner right at water level. 68 SHOWBOATS INTERNATIONAL Silver Wind’s best trick may be silence, more specifically an active noise-cancellation (ANC) device by Videoworks in all the staterooms. An evolution of the first system installed on the CRN Darlings Danama two years ago, it works like noise-cancellation headsets do. Because the owner is sensitive to noise, there are four microphones in the master cabin—three on the perimeter of the ceiling above the bed and one on the headboard. The guest cabins have a simpler one-microphone button in the headboard. It creates a “no-noise bubble” with a radius of up to six feet inside the cabins, in which the environmental noise can be reduced by 8-10dBA. It works in the 20- to 200-Hz band to deal with typical mechanical noise and the lower part of HVAC noise. Microphones close to the bubble acquire the noise in real time and after very fast data signal processing (DSP), woofer speakers generate a negligible feedback noise, which cancels the original one. To counter air-conditioning noise, a further microphone can be added together with a feed-forward DSP algorithm. The entire system is built with a unique box containing the electronics and speakers, which makes for a simple, non-invasive installation in newbuild yachts or refits. – MARILYN MOWER SHOWBOATS INTERNATIONAL 69 silver wind || 143' ISA silver wind || 143' ISA BETTER THAN REALITY Augmented reality may not immediately come to mind when you think about navigating a yacht; after all, you probably want your watch crew to be firmly planted in “real reality,” don’t you? But an augmented view, brand-new technology by Transas featured for the first time on Silver Wind, offers crew improved awareness of their surroundings. Video from a camera (a regular one or thermal imaging for night vision) mounted up top displays in the wheelhouse with basically the same view the watch crew would see through the bridge windows. The Transas Augmented Reality system can access all the relevant information for the camera’s particular field of vision, including chart information (shallow water, buoys, etc.), route and waypoints, radar data (ARPA targets), AIS and forwardlooking sonar data. All of this information is overlaid on the camera video. “The navigator then has the ‘big picture’ with minimal efforts, and this means better decisions and less errors,” says Christopher SchrÖder, business development manager for Transas Mega Yacht Market. The forward VIP is exceptionally spacious, its bed surrounded with a stunning display of golden tiles. to ensure a high level of redundancy. Everything works with touch technology but in case of emergency, the system also works in standalone mode. The really clever part is all this can be done without choosing the actual equipment until just a few months before launch, which means the bridge is not only up to date but also exceptionally easy to upgrade over the years. It looks good, too, certainly deserving of the designation “command central,” with a sumptuous red leather pilot chair surrounded by touch screens a fingertip away. It encapsulates what Silver Wind is about. Yes, she's aesthetically pleasing and functional, but it’s what those touch screens can do that’s the really interesting part. this page Sumptuous materials define the interior character. Note the straw marquetry design of the silk wall panels to the sides of the VIP’s bed (top right), and the galuchat on a guest stateroom door (top left).
