Here we go! Another year of learning, fun, and friends! I am so excited to see you
all, whether you are new or are returning to Salem. The action all begins
on Tuesday, September 6th with our first ever Back to School Extravaganza!
This is a new format where we are combining our ice cream social with building
strong school to home partnerships. It will also help alleviate back to school jitters,
allow time to see old friends and make new ones, and provide important information and
opportunities. This fun filled evening will include:

Kindergarten students & families will be attending Family Connection meetings with
their teacher September 7th-9th. In your back to school letter you received
instructions for how to sign up on line for a day and time. School begins for
kindergarten and preschool students on Monday, September 12th.

Immunizations
The back-to-school season is a great time for families to see their health care
provider for any needed childhood immunizations. Your child must be up to date
with all immunizations within 30 days after their first day of attending school.
Immunizations can be received from your health care provider. Effective January

First Day of School Transportation
It is important for your student to ride the bus to and from school on the first day.
This is when procedures, expectations, and bus routes are established. It also assists
your child in feeling confident in navigating the bus & campus independently. Feel
free to follow the bus in your car for your peace of mind.
Studies have shown that students are much safer on the school bus than in a car.
Riding the bus also helps to foster friendships, students arrive on time and
attendance is more consistent.

If your child will be going home a different way other than the bus, please send a note
on the first day of school to tell us what their plan is for the year.
School Meals
At 8:40 am students may purchase breakfast for $1.85, hot lunches are available at a
cost of $3.00 daily and milk is $0.40. Students may pay with cash, check or through
their account. Please make checks out to Salem Woods and indicate on the check
that it is for meals and which child you are paying for. You can track your child’s
meal account through Family Access.
Free and Reduced Applications are available in the office or online. You must
complete an application prior to October 19th to continue your benefits.

Attendance Hotline
If your child is ill, on vacation, or is going to be late to school, please call our 24 hour
attendance hotline at 360-804-3601. By calling ahead of time our office staff do not need to
make unnecessary calls home. If no call is received your child’s absence will be unexcused.
We have four periods in a day and if you miss 10 minutes of any one period it is considered an
absence.

Stay Connected
Make sure we have your email address to ensure you get a copy of the newsletter every week! Starting in September, we will
send them electronically every Thursday, using your email address we have in the student system. Newsletters are also available
on the school website www.monroe.wednet.edu. Click on “Schools”, then Salem Woods Elementary and then use the “News”
tab. If you need a hard copy, please let your child’s teacher know. We also use our automated phone system to provide information to you, whether school or district level. Please be sure we have your most updated phone numbers and if you make a
change during the year.
Family Access
Your child’s success in school depends on a strong working relationship between your family and your child’s
teacher and school. That success is enhanced by connecting your family and our school staff through strong
two-way communication. Monroe Public Schools has invested in multiple ways to help families and schools
easily share information back and forth. This includes Family Access. Family Access provides families with
online information about their child’s attendance, lunch account and other information. Visit the Family
Access link on our webpage www.monroe.wednet.edu to sign up for a password.
Volunteers
Volunteers are needed in the school, in the classroom, as WATCH D.O.G.S., and for special events that are
scheduled throughout the year.

classroom.

Salem Woods has two specific volunteer opportunities:
1. We are looking for someone to run the laminator for our teachers. This would be a small amount
of time each week. Talk with Tammy or Renee in the office for more information.
2. We are looking for green thumbs...are you a master gardener? We would like a volunteer to
organize and be in charge of the flower beds in front of the school. This can be with students,
staff and other volunteers.

All adults wishing to volunteer at the school, visit regularly, go on a field trip, etc., must complete and
turn in a Volunteer Packet. The packets are available online. A new packet must be submitted every
year, prior to volunteering.

Transportation Information
The safety of each and every child at Salem Woods is our first priority. For this reason we have pick-up and drop-off procedures that are in place and need to be followed by everyone.
A school parking lot is a busy and scary place for little people to navigate in the mornings and afternoons. In addition to utilizing
bus transportation, which we highly encourage, we have two options for AM drop-off and PM pick-up of students. In the morning, you may use our car drop-off located behind the grange or you may park and personally walk your child to the backstop
area inside the fence, where there are staff on duty. In the afternoon, you may use our car pick-up behind the grange or you
may park and personally walk to the covered play shed to meet your child. We do not release students from any other location including the classroom. Again, this is for the safety of all children. Thank you for your cooperation in following these very
important procedures that are outlined in detail below.
1.
Drop-off should be a quick process. Your child should be able to exit the vehicle without your assistance and in a timely
manner. When circumstances require you to help your child exit the vehicle, please park your car in the parking lot and
walk your child to the backstop area or to their classroom. Drop off does not begin until a staff person is present.
2.
Please pull your car forward as far as possible in the drop off area (only 4 cars may unload at one time for safety reasons)
to help the flow of traffic, then let your child off in the yellow zone, having them exit from the passenger side of the car.
3. After 8:52 (Salem Woods time) you will need to park and sign your child into the office.
Car Pick-up at 3:25 pm:

your child enter the vehicle, please park your car in the parking lot and meet your child in the undercover play shed.

dismissed into the parking lot or to a waiting car not following the pick- up procedures.

Every Student Succeeds Act – a revised law for schools:
On December 10, 2015, President Barack Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) into law. ESSA replaced No Child Left Behind (NCLB) as the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
ESSA will be fully implemented in school year 2017-2018.
States across the nation are currently in the process of learning all the details in ESSA - what’s new, what’s different,
and what must now change to support students in public elementary and secondary schools across the country.
What we know so far:
The state must continue to determine how schools and districts are performing and progressing.
Students will continue to take the annual state test in grades 3-8 and 11 in English language arts and mathematics,
and in grades 5, 8, and once in high school in science.
Districts will not be providing free tutoring or public school choice in the 2016-2017 school year and beyond.
In place of the free tutoring, Frank Wagner Elementary School (FWES) and Park Place Middle School (PPMS)
will provide during and after-school intervention services and homework help.
Students who opted to attend a school other than FWES due to “Public School Choice,” may remain in that
school until they complete 5th grade. District-provided transportation options to Public School Choice
schools (Maltby Elementary School or Salem Woods Elementary School) will continue for the 2016-2017
school year; however, because district-provided transportation is no longer required for Public School
Choice, it may not be continued beyond the 2016-2017 school year. Monroe Public Schools is opting to include a one year transition period to support families as they make the decision that is best for their students
for the following years if transportation for Public School Choice can no longer be offered.
Ley “Cada estudiante triunfa” (Every Student Succeeds Act), una ley actualizada para las escuelas:
El 10 de diciembre de 2015, el presidente Barack Obama firmó la ley “Cada estudiante triunfa” (ESSA).
La ley ESSA remplazó la anterior ley “Que Ningún Niño se Quede Atrás” (NCLB) como la reautorización de
la Ley de Educación Primaria y Secundaria (ESEA). La ley ESSA se implementará en su totalidad en el año
escolar 2017-2018.
