President’s Message
Dear Fellow Lacers,
Thanks for all who braved the heat and showed
up for the Aug. meeting.
We had some lively visiting and a peek at the
goodies from the convention.
Thanks to Lucy and Julia who showed their
goodies.
Freeway should be proud that Lucy and Julia
won in the Olympic bobbin lace competition
(ask us about the obstacles and to see our
medals). We did not fare as well in the knitting
relay.
Lace Day is coming Nov. 3, 2012. Keep that date
open and be thinking of how you can help.
We need helpers in many areas: Donating
cookies and treats, Ordering and picking up
lunches, Teaching classes, Set up and Clean up,
Raffle table and donations. If you can help for
an hour to a bunch let us know. We have jobs
for every skill level. Sign-ups will be at the Sept.
meeting.
The Lovely Lace display at the Rengstorff House
in Mountain View is looking for lace to
show. Entry information will be available at the
meeting in Sept.
Looking forward to seeing you in Sept.
Julia
PS I have some great news about Lace
Day… see you at the meeting on the 15th
Meeting Minutes
The August 19, 2012 meeting of the Freeway Lace Guild was called to order by President Julia Brock at
10:45a. The minutes were corrected as follows: “Bill will teach the crocheted cap at the September 15
meeting,” not at Lace Day. Further general corrections to the newsletter; Bette Crowell spells her name with
an ”e”, not a “y” and Rita Taylor would like her position listed as “Demonstration Hours” rather than Demo
Hour Queen. Thank you to Virgadean Richmond for undertaking the position of Newsletter Editor. Bugs are
still being worked out.
Committees:
Treasurer: Alan reports a balance of $11,189.40.
Library: Vibs sent a selection of bobbin lace books with Joan T. and Joan will take any returned items to
Librarian Vibs.
Hospitality: Joan W. will not be able to continue, so we need someone to oversee the coffee/tea pot and
basic supplies. Members will continue to bring scrumptious treats and garden goodies to share.
Demonstration Hours: Rita says that only four members reported demonstration hours last year! While
some members split their hours among different lace groups, this is still unusually low. Last year we had over
1000 hours. She brings the Demonstration Hours notebook to meetings. Each member has their own
individual page to record any demonstration hours. If it makes it easier, record your hours on a sheet at
home so you won’t forget in case you miss a meeting. You can always email or snail mail the information
sheet to her. We’re good at sharing but lousy at paperwork.
Demonstration hours and sharing with the public are part of non-profit obligations and the Freeway Lace
Guild’s mission. The info is sent to IOLI each Spring. IOLI presents certificates to and recognizes chapters for
their volunteer hours at Convention.
Program: September 15 Bill will teach an Irish crochet cap. There was a picture of the lovely piece in the
August newsletter.
Lace Day (November 3, 2012): The flyer was sent. Raffle prizes are being collected. Theme is Things That
Fly.
Announcements: Fliers for Fine Fabrics Show in Santa Barbara, Louise Colgan’s Milanese class at The
Lace Museum and Lacy Ladies of AZ Lace Day were available. FLG has two keys to the church. Julia
wound up with both. Not a good idea. Lucie agreed to take the spare one. Pete Alderson of Snowgoose is
in poor health. Two women from Arizona have taken over the business.
IOLI Annual Meeting: Lucie attended the IOLI meeting. She accepted our certificate for volunteer hours. The
decision to change the name passed; International Order of Lace. A contest for a new logo will be held.
Members should check their Bulletin for details. Convention attendees were polled regarding their desire for
class certificates; yes -100, no-27, don’t care 300. The final installment of the Lace Poppy Challenge was
held. It began at LA 2009 with 14 entries and has continued since then. This year there were 42 entries. Well
done!
IOLI Convention: Julia and Lucie attended along with about 15 FLG members. They shared goodies and
events. Nancy Evans has a new Lace ID book. The star theme carried throughout many of the treats. It was
on the tote bag and the pin, of course. The lace stars that we made were attached to a large tatting bag. They
received about 600, enough so that each bag had two.
In the spirit of the Olympics, they conducted their
own in tatting, crocheting, knitting and bobbin lace events. Tatters had to use lanyard plastic. Crocheters
duplicated vintage potholders in twenty minutes from a picture. Julia and Lucie and a third left-handed
lacemaker made up a knitting relay team. It was done standing, each row was different and it involved a
spatula? Ask them. Bobbin lacers received laminated paper fish bobbins with elastic thread which made
tensioning a challenge. Julia placed first, Lucie second. Great job FLG! The audience also had an event of
their own, memorizing a crocheted flower pattern. IOLI 2013 will be hosted by the Beehive Lacers in Salt
Lake City, Utah. We’re told that there will be four tatting teachers, but no needle lace is planned.
Show ‘N Tell:
Bette-Nancy has a new hat made from a Lester lace cuff inspired by Bill’s caps. She also finally made a cross
stitched Altoids can for herself, after years of stitching them for the rest of us.
Rita-is making headway on the wedding garter. It is coming along nicely.
Cindy-brought her lovely, large framed cross stitch Day Fairy. She will be working a companion piece.
Lucie-brought wire bobbins from Bruce (bobbin maker) to test-lace, German insect pins which are more
reasonably priced, a cute moose from Mall of America and lace stamps (for scrap booking, not mailing). She
took a Chantilly class from Ulrike Voelckler and discovered that several who thought they were making a
beginning pattern found that it was more advanced.
Julia-shared the Bucks piece that she made in Jean Leader’s class. She also made lace jewelry to wear at
the convention; a necklace and earring set that she designed. Bobbins she purchased were a Will & Kate, a
QE2 diamond jubilee commemorative, a modern hedgehog and a Minnesota commemorative. The meeting was
adjourned at 11:30.
Submitted,

Dorothy Candalaria Passed away Aug 20th from
