1922 #13 Combination Chemise‐Panties ‐‐ Combinaison Chemise‐Culotte This charming combination is very simple to make. It requires very little fabric. We will make it preferably in cotton lawn or percale, which are the fabrics most readily used for lingerie. It is trimmed with a little imitation valenciennes [lace], which one places at the neckline and at the bottom of the combination. The shoulder straps are ribbons tied on the shoulders. Choose rather the washable narrow [satin ribbon], since the combination being a piece of lingerie is intended to be washed more often than a dress. If one has a wider ribbon, make the shoulder strap from a single piece: a ribbon bow would be too thick and would interfere with the appearance of the dress on top. The pattern gives half of the front. It is necessary to cut with the fabric doubled while taking care to place well the middle of the front on the fold of the fabric. The back is the same as the front. Bring together and sew the side seams. Make a very small hem at the top and bottom of the combination. Hem also the armholes. This done, sew the lace at the top and bottom of the combination. Choose a fairly narrow lace. To form the panties, make from point O to point S, in the middle of the combination, several back stitches which will form the two legs of the panties. Run two gathering threads at the top of the combination to reduce the fullness. Do the same for each leg and, before stopping the gathers, try the combination on Bleuette. The top must be well retained, but the bottom of the little pants must be left wide enough. This combination‐panties can, if one eliminates the gathers at the bottom, become a simple little empire chemise. If one leaves the lace at the bottom and if one passes a casing at the waist, one obtains a very elegant combination‐skirt [slip]. In this last case, keep the combination [slip] a little bit longer, the skirt front still exceeds the panties, without however reaching the length of the dress.
