Body-Mind-Spirit. • With safe use, aromatherapy can be beneficial for both humans and their animal friends. © 2016 – Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 2 WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS? • Essential oils are derived from aromatic plant materials via steam distillation or cold pressed/expression methods. • Essential oils are extracted from the plant material to produce a liquid which contains volatile aromatic compounds. • Beneficial therapeutic properties/uses: - Antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, sedative, stimulating, etc. © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 3 TYPES OF ESSENTIAL OILS • • • • • • • • • • Wood oils: wood, inner heartwood, i.e. cedarwood, sandalwood Bark oils: bark, i.e. cinnamon Leaf oils: plant leaves, bud, stems, i.e. peppermint, spearmint Floral oils: flower top/herb, petals, blossoms, i.e. jasmine, rose Seed oils: dried or crushed seeds, i.e. sweet fennel Citrus oils: fruit peel/rind, i.e. grapefruit, lemon, sweet orange Needle oils: tree needles/fresh twigs, i.e. pine/spruce Resin oils: tree/plant resin, oleoresin, i.e. frankincense, myrrh Root oils: root stems, rhizomes, i.e. ginger root Fruit /Berry oils: plant/shrub berries, fruit, i.e. juniper berry © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 4 WHAT ARE CARRIER BASES? • Derived from plant or botanical materials • Used to dilute essential oils for topical applications - Carrier oils also contain therapeutic properties - Also known as base oils • Plant material such as seeds or hips: rosehip and sesame oils • Jojoba oil (a plant ester/wax) is derived from the jojoba shrub • Aloe Vera plant provides a cooling and soothing gelly (aloe vera gel) derived from the inside of the plant’s rubbery-type leaves © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 5 METHODS OF APPLICATION Essential oils can be used with the following methods of application: • Direct Inhalation • Diffusion (atomizer diffuser) • Mist Sprays (topical, environmental) • Topical* (compress, bath, massage and energy therapies) *Always dilute essential oils for topical use. Avoid use of essential oils with cats, birds, reptiles and fish. Do not give essential oils internally to your pets/animal clients. Do not apply essential oils “neat” (undiluted) to the skin. Do not apply essential oils directly to the nose/muzzle, inside ears, near eyes or genital areas. • If irritation occurs, apply a plain carrier oil then wipe off residue, wash with diluted mild soap and warm water. • • • • • * Use essential oils for short-term use only, and if irritation occurs, discontinue use. © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 7 SAFETY & CONTRAINDICATIONS , continued • Avoid topical use of essential oils that can be photo-toxic during exposure to sunlight - Allow 12 hours after application of citrus oils or use distilled version e.g. bergamot, lemon, lime, etc. • Lavender is not a one-size fits all. Some animals may not be able to tolerate the use of essential oils. • Some essential oils should not be used with animals – e.g. tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), which can be toxic to dogs, cats and small mammals. • Keep essential oils and aromatherapy products out of reach of children and pets. • For more information on Animal Aromatherapy Safety visit www.holisticanimalassociation.com © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 8 ANIMALS HAVE EMOTIONS TOO! Animals can experience many of the same emotions that humans do, as well as their own set of feelings and physical symptoms. This can be based on any of the following contributing factors: • Diet/Nutrition (poor, lack of, too much of, etc.) • Health issues (acute/chronic, hormonal imbalance) • Environment (indoor/outdoor) • Lifestyle (exercise, companionship, grooming, etc.) • Past trauma/abuse/emotional neglect. © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 9 THE EMOTIONAL BODY Connection between Emotions and Physical Issues FEAR ISSUES: • Anxiety: Anxious energy, separation anxiety, fearful, hyperactive, pacing, hiding, chewing objects, whining/whimpering, easily startled or spooked jumping on people, pawing, etc. • Lack of Confidence: Shy, hesitant, unsure, hiding, easily dominated by others. © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 10 THE EMOTIONAL BODY Connection between Emotions and Physical Issues FEAR ISSUES, continued: • Body and Behavior Connection: Trembling, sensitive to touch and sound or changes in routine, fear biter/nipping, incontinence (physical and emotional), sleep issues, afraid to move (stays stuck in fear), very attached (like Velcro) to companion or caregiver (physical/emotional attachment), etc. • TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Meridians/Energetics: Kidney, Bladder and Heart © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 11 THE EMOTIONAL BODY Connection between Emotions and Physical Issues Vibrations & Energy-are animals more intune than us? • Animals are energy sponges. They can 'absorb', 'detect' and 'alert' to energy from within their environment. This energy may be given-off by the caregiver, family member or a fellow animal companion, and their surroundings. • They are sensitive to CHANGE: changes in emotions and moods, body temperature, hormonal imbalances, health issues (seizures, pain, trauma and sensing cancer, etc.), weather/climate, as well as any changes in routine. Energy may be 'sensed' by way of the five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and of course most important, the sense of smell! © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 12 Sense of Smell-The Animal Kingdom Rules! ____________________________________ Chart Image 2015 Online Source : https://kmblog.kriticalmass.com/dogs-can-smell-cancer-on-your-breath/ © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 13 AROMATHERAPYFEAR ISSUES AROMA-SCENT CHOICE(s): Main aroma-actions for fear issues: • Calm the spirit/shen (mind/spirit/energy) • Ground the body/mind connection • Decrease fear and stress • Increase and build confidence • Rejuvenate Qi-essence (life force) © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 14 ESSENTIAL OILSFEAR ISSUES • • • • • Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis): anxiety, fear, trembling, disturbed sleep Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens): anxiety, fear, hormonal support, PTSD Ginger (Zingiber x officinale): nausea/motion sickness, increase confidence Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum): anxiety, trauma/abuse, PTSD Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): anxiety, fear, trembling, hyperactive (mind/body), trauma (physical/emotional), disturbed sleep, jumpy/spooky, hypersensitive to touch/sound • Melissa (Melissa officinalis): anxiety, panic attacks, increase confidence © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 15 ESSENTIAL OILSFEAR ISSUES , continued • Neroli (Citrus x aurantium var. amara (flos)): anxiety, panic attacks, separation anxiety, body trembling, sensitive to touch/sounds, PTSD • Sweet orange (Citrus sinensis): increase confidence, nausea/motion sickness, jumpy/spooky • Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin): grounding, hyperactive, sensitive to touch, trauma/abuse • Rose (Rosa x damascena Mill.): emotional wounds, trauma/abuse, lack of vitality and joy, sadness, fear-aggression, PTSD • Tangerine (Citrus reticulata Blanco var. tangerine): increase confidence/focus, hyperactive energy, repetitive negative behavior, separation anxiety © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 16 ESSENTIAL OILSFEAR ISSUES , continued • Vanilla CO2 extract (Vanilla planifolia): anxiety, increase confidence, training aid, repetitive negative behavior, separation anxiety • Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides): grounding, hormonal support, mood swings, body trembling, PTSD, hyperactive energy, jumpy/spooky • Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata): anxiety, body trembling, hypersensitive to touch, past trauma/abuse, spooky/jumpy, increase confidence (especially in males), fear-aggression © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 17 AROMATHERAPY CASE STUDY: SANDY • A mare having difficulty with estrous cycle (heat cycle) due to a traumatic ordeal • No issues prior to the trauma • Symptoms: - Cramping, pain, spooky, hypersensitive to noises, kicking stall walls, reacting to a fellow mare exhibiting stud-like behavior, calling out to other horses, moody © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 18 AROMATHERAPY CASE STUDY continued • Aromatherapy blend applied - 1-2 times per day as needed, for 2-3 months until her cycle normalized • Additional essential oils and flower essences for approx. 1-2 years to help her move through other issues caused by the trauma (fear, trust and separation anxiety) © 2016 Kelly Holland Azzaro, RA, CCAP, CBFP, LMT 19 AROMAS IN ACTION Sandy’s blend for fear-based behavior and hormonal support Image 1: • Initial inhalation of aromatherapy blend, showing curiosity in the scents, with nostrils widening and both ears to side, slowly coming forward.
