Breaking News - VCU Brandcenter
BEYOND SIXTY Summer 2013 Letter from the Director Dear Alumni, Well, I have completed my first year. There have been incredible highs, a few lows, and I have loved every minute of it. I am more impressed every day with the students, faculty, and staff at the Brandcenter, and I am proud to say that this place has become a new home for me. Speaking of proud – it has been about six weeks since they graduated and already the Class of 2013 has reached 80% job placement. Jeff Kling, Chief Creative Officer of Fallon, in his phenomenal graduation speech sent them off with some sage advice as they enter the industry. Advice that many of you could benefit from, so we’ve posted the full video footage on our website. The Brandcenter was particularly proud of one of its graduates this year. As you may have heard, Michelle Lamont (CW, 2013), went home for winter break to learn that, at age 25, she had breast cancer. Despite a long road to recovery which included surgeries and chemotherapy, Michelle was determined to finish her last semester at the Brandcenter. She barely skipped a beat, skyping in for group meetings and presentations, flying in to attend the recruiter session and prom, and on May 11th, walking across the stage to graduate with her classmates. Not only does she have a sense of humor about her cancer (among many other emotions), but she is sharing her experiences in a sharp-witted, emotional, and inspirational blog, I’m 25 and my boobs are trying to kill me. killerboobies.wordpress.com. I guarantee you’ll keep reading. Michelle is now starting her career as a Copywriter at 360i in New York City. In March, we had the pleasure of honoring the person who recruited Mike Hughes, Jay Chiat, and Dan Wieden to the Adcenter’s original Board of Directors, got the approval of Dr. Eugene Trani to start a graduate program for advertising at VCU, and created the VCU Adcenter: our founding director, Diane Cook-Tench. We toasted Diane and presented her with a plaque that proudly hangs in the Brandcenter lobby. In April, we welcomed 200+ recruiters to our annual Recruiter Session event, which was a huge success and resulted in higher than average internship and job placement numbers for our students. Our 2013 copywriters were also featured on www.moderncopywriter.com, garnering them some valuable exposure as they ramped up their job searches. In May, I was also able to lead my first Brandcenter Board Meeting. Never have I been surrounded by such energizing people who are so passionate about one thing, and I am so honored that the one thing is the Brandcenter. No one is more passionate than founding Board Chairman Mike Hughes. Mike has had some serious health issues in his battle with lung cancer, and has decided to step down from his position, moving to our advisory board. He made a surprise visit to thank the board and ask them to take care of the school that he has been such a huge part of from its beginning. Mike leaves some very big shoes to fill, and we are honored that his friend and partner, CEO of The Martin Agency John Adams succeeds him as Chairman of the Brandcenter board. I am thrilled to work with John to continue the Brandcenter mission. My first year has been about recognizing the past, embracing the present and preparing for the future. You all are an integral part of all of that. What makes this school so special is its strong alumni network. After you graduate, you do not leave the school behind, you only take on a new role in the Adcenter/Brandcenter family. Please keep in touch and keep us informed of all the great things you are doing. I look forward to meeting many more of you soon. Click here to follow us. This summer, the Brandcenter is restarting its popular executive education programs with Ambidexterity for Account Planning the week of July 15th, and The “New Model” Creative Director the week of August 5th. These are robust, 5-day thinking and learning programs taught by faculty from the Brandcenter and the industry. They are designed to train working professionals and managers with new ways of attacking the problems and opportunities agencies and clients face in today’s complex, multi-channel world. Registration is now open! If you have questions about the programs, please contact Caley Cantrell, [email protected]. Brandcenter Sponsors Portfolio Night 11 This year the Brandcenter was a global sponsor of the 11th annual Portfolio Night, an event put on by the Art Directors Club and Ihaveanidea that gives aspiring young creatives the opportunity to meet with renowned creative directors who review their work and impart advice. The networking event included several Brandcenter alumni on both sides of the table. It’s been called “speed dating for creatives.” Portfolio Night takes place in cities all over the world, all on the same night: May 22nd. While SIXTY magazine made it into goody bags in each city, Brandcenter reps Hawley Smyth and Katherine Keogh recruited at PN11 in New York and Philadelphia, and director Helayne Spivak reviewed books at the Chicago event. We’ve already gotten several prospective student applications from the event and expect to receive many more. Brandcenter Welcomed Great Speakers for Friday Forum The spring semester’s Friday Forum started out strong with Dave Schiff, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer at Made Movement. The Brandcenter had the pleasure of hosting many great speakers including board member Rick Webb of Secret Clubhouse; Juan Carlos Pagan, Head of Design at DDB New York; Marta LaRock, Chief Strategy Officer at mcgarrybowen New York; PJ Pereira, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Pereira & O’Dell, and Eric Hanson, Director of Planning at TBWA\Media Arts Lab, just to name a few. Friday Forum has become an institution at the Brandcenter, and we have received many requests for it to be viewable online. Over the last year we experimented with live streaming, which, while popular, was unreliable. Instead, whenever possible and with the speakers’ permission, we will post full video footage from Friday Forum to our vimeo and Facebook pages, bringing you better quality and flexibility to watch whenever you’d like. Brandcenter Alums Rule Super Bowl XLVII We watched with pride as our alums had a huge presence in this year’s Super Bowl advertising. Brandcenter alumni took three of the top ten rankings in USA Today’s Ad Meter, including Tide “Miracle Stain” (#2), Kia “Space Babies”(#6), and Audi “Prom”(#10). Since our students don’t like to stand by the sidelines, a group of Brandcenter 2nd year students weighed in on Super Bowl ads as well using the Twitter hashtag #BCBigGame. The morning after the Super Bowl, “Miracle Stain” was featured on the TODAY Show where Matt Miller, Brandcenter Board member and President of the Association of Independent Commercial Producers, mentioned the VCU Brandcenter as “the #1 advertising school in the country.” Brandcenter Alumni Spots: Tide “Miracle Stain” Agency: Saatchi & Saatchi NY Alums: Luke Behrends (CW, 2007) and Jared Creason (CW, 2007) Kia “Space Babies” Agency: David and Goliath, Los Angeles Alum: Steve Yee (AD, 2000) Audi “Prom” Agency: Venables, Bell and Partners, San Francisco Alum: Kendall Beveridge (CBM, 2010) Agency: M80 Alum: Raunak Munot (CBM, 2010) – social media campaign Best Buy “Asking Amy Poehler” Agency: CP+B LA Alum: Devin Kennedy (CBM, 2012) VW “Get Happy Office Guy” Agency: Deutsch LA Alum: Mark Peters (AD, 2000) Samsung “Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen” Agency: 72andSunny Alum: Patrick Maravilla (CW, 2007) Blackberry “My New Blackberry” Agency: BBDO New York Alum: Richard Perusi (AD, 2006) Brandcenter Alumni Regional Super Bowl Spots: Old Spice “Irresistible” Agency: Wieden + Kennedy Portland Alum: Britton Taylor (CS, 2001) BMO Harris Bank “Dream Home” Agency: Y&R Chicago Alum: Laura Fallon (AD, 2010) Alum: James Wood (CW, 2009) Brandcenter Honors Founding Director, Diane Cook-Tench On Friday March 1st, we honored our school’s founding director, Diane Cook-Tench, with a plaque in recognition of her achievements. As many of you know, Diane Cook-Tench was the visionary who helped to build the VCU Adcenter — now the VCU Brandcenter — into the country’s leading graduate advertising and marketing communications program. Diane’s closest friends and family gathered to listen to heartfelt thanks from John Adams, Chairman of The Martin Agency, and Mike Hughes, President of the Martin Agency, who were both alongside Diane Cook-Tench in her journey creating the Adcenter. Brandcenter Director, Helayne Spivak, then unveiled the plaque and gave a toast in honor of the evening. The plaque graces the Brandcenter lobby. Welcome New VCU Brandcenter Board Members! We were delighted to welcome our Board of Directors at our annual board meeting, which took place May 1-3, 2013. A lively discussion of ways we can continue to grow and improve our program ensued, focusing on how our students and graduates are being utilized by the industry and will continue to be utilized 3-5 years from now. Other highlights included a review of the past year, faculty-led discussions of our tracks, and the resurgence of our Executive Education programs. Mike Hughes, President of The Martin Agency, made a special appearance to thank the Board for their dedication and years of service. Mike Hughes has been the Chairman of the Brandcenter Board since the school’s inception in 1996, and will now take the role of Chairman Emeritus as we welcome John Adams, 40-year advertising veteran and Chairman of The Martin Agency, as Chairman of the Brandcenter Board. Together John, the Brandcenter Board, Faculty, and Director, Helayne Spivak, will continue to lead changes and advances in our program. We are also excited to welcome our newest board members: Ê UÊ-ÕÃ>Ê Ài`i]Ê ivÊ Ài>ÌÛiÊ"vwViÀÉÊiÊÕÀiÌÌÊ1- Ê UÊÕ}ÕÃÌ>ÊÕvviÞ]ÊÝiVÕÌÛiÊ Ài>ÌÛiÊÀiVÌÀÉÊÊ>iÌÌ Ê UÊ>iÊ>VÃ]ÊÝiVÕÌÛiÊ6ViÊ*ÀiÃ`iÌ]ÊÀiVÌÀÊvÊÌi}À>Ìi`Ê*À`ÕVÌÉÊÊ V>} Ê UÊÊÃi« ]ÊÊ*ÀiÃ`iÌÊ ÀÌ ÊiÀV>ÊÉÊ ÊEÊ7viÊi>`µÕ>ÀÌiÀÃ Ê UÊ>Ì >Ê`i >]ÊÊ6ViÊ*ÀiÃ`iÌ]ÊL>Ê`ÛiÀÌÃ}Ê-ÌÀ>Ìi}ÞÊÊEÊ ÌiÌÊÝViiViÉÊ The Coca-Cola Company Ê UÊVÊ,LiÀÌÃ]ÊÊÀiÀÊÝiVÕÌÛiÉÊ7>ÀiÀÊÀð Team Killer Boobies: Brandcenter Students Rally Behind Classmate The Brandcenter students wanted to do something to honor their friend and classmate Michelle Lamont, who was battling breast cancer rather than joining them at Xteam and leading her normal, active lifestyle. Inspired by Michelle, a group of Brandcenter students not only decided to run the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K, but they also started a fundraising team to raise money for cancer research. Team Killer Boobies exceeded their fundraising goal on their first day. By race day, they had raised over $15,000 for the Massey Cancer Center at VCU and became the third highest fundraising team in the 10K. Brandcenter Students Win People’s Choice Award in Start-Up Competition Adcenter/Brandcenter students have long had an entrepreneurial spirit. This year, three second years discovered a consumer need and developed a way to meet it. Sam Cantor (AD, 2013) is an avid bike rider who, like many, enjoyed the method of transportation considerably less in the winter months when his hands would freeze, no matter how thick his gloves were. So he teamed up with Hunter Pechin (CBM, 2013) and Nick Marx (CT, 2013) to solve this problem. They came up with the idea to use the power generated from pedaling a bike to heat its handlebars, and DragonGrips was born. The team developed a working prototype and entered The Greater Richmond Chamber’s startup competition, winning the People’s Choice Award and $2,500 from First Capital Bank. Sam is headed to Wieden + Kennedy Portland, Nick is headed to 72&Sunny and Hunter is staying in Richmond to help lead marketing efforts for Health Warrior. Brandcenter Students Win Radio Mercury Award We are thrilled to announce that the VCU Brandcenter 2nd year team of Parker Bell (AD, 2013) and Andrew Kong (CW, 2013) won this year’s Radio Mercury Awards student competition and a $3,000 prize. Parker is headed to The Richards Group as an Art Director and Andrew is headed to Wieden + Kennedy Portland as a Copywriter. Work Hard/ Play Hard: Brandcenter Students celebrate with Prom and Softball This year’s prom was held on the rooftop patio of Havana 59 in Shockoe Bottom on April 20th. Narrowing down 97 theme submissions, second years voted on “Multiple Piñatas of Reasonable Size and Composition.” Students dressed appropriately, whatever that means, and danced to a playlist of crowdsourced favorites. Second years Chris Martin (CW) and Jingwen Cao (AD) were crowned King and Queen, and first years Rod Kashani (CS) Araba Wilson (CS) were named Prince and Princess. No piñatas were actually broken during the party. In the annual end-of-the-year softball game, Team Second Year dominated once again. The game was never in doubt as they took control early and won 4-1. There were as many spectators as players this year, with food and beverages provided by Brandcentral, our student-run organization. The fierce but friendly rivalry is always a great way to end the school year.
