PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
ONE IMAGE THAT
CHANGED THE WORLD
By John McCoy
PPAGLA President
W
Joe Rosenthal
Rosenthal was among the first to land on the
beach at Iwo Jima. In later accounts he would
describe crossing the beach without being shot like
walking through a rainstorm and not getting wet.
Those accomplishments alone
would make for a distinguished
career. However, Rosenthal was
best known for a single photograph — a picture that is considered to be one of the greatest
moments ever captured on film:
the raising of the American Flag
at Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima.
On Feb. 23, 1945, Joe
Rosenthal was a 33-year-old
photographer for the Associated
Press. He was assigned to cover
a battle that would drag on for
more than a month and cost the
lives of 6,621 American G.I.s
and more than 21,000 Japanese
soldiers.
Rosenthal was among the first
to land on the beach at Iwo Jima.
In later accounts he would
describe crossing the beach without being shot like walking
through a rainstorm and not getting wet.
On the fifth day of fighting,
the Americans captured the 546foot peak of a dormant volcano
named Mount Suribachi. In triumph, they raised a flag.
A weary Rosenthal ascended
Mount Suribachi to photograph
the flag-raising. Upon reaching
the summit, he stood frozen in
disappointment. He had missed
the moment. At the pinnacle of a
makeshift flagpole, he focused
his eyes through Coke-bottle
thick glasses to see the Stars and
Stripes flapping defiantly in the
wind.
The message of victory was
clear, but in the estimation of the
Marine Corps, the flag was too
small. So while Rosenthal stood
anguishing a moment lost, an
event occurred that would
change his life.
Five battle-weary Marines and
a Corpsman appeared, and began
Just One More, Jr • September 2006
hy do we do it? I had
always wanted to be a
reporter. But back in
the days before spell check, my
keyboard atrocities made that
dream an impossibility.
So, as a junior in high school,
I picked up a camera and started
shooting for the yearbook staff.
It was a great opportunity to be
in the front row, and on the sidelines to record the events that
shaped my school.
I evolved as a
shooter, and in
college I shot
for the
Criterion at
Mesa State,
and the Daily
Sentinel in
Grand
Junction, Colo.
I hoped, in my idealistic
youth, that some day I would
make a photograph that would
change the world. I wanted to
use my lens to document the
human condition. I wanted my
pictures to invoke thought and
emotion.
It’s a dream that many of us
photojournalists share. It’s a reality for photographers who make
a career by capturing poignant
moments.
That’s why I do it.
I began thinking about the art
and craft of photojournalism
when I read an obituary about
Joe Rosenthal.
Rosenthal was a staff photographer at the San Francisco
Chronicle who retired in 1981
after 35 years of service. During
that time he was president of the
San Francisco-Oakland
Newspaper Guild in 1951 and
held the office of president of the
Bay Area Press Photographers
Assn. for three terms. Twice he
was president of the San
Francisco Press Club. He was
also an honorary member of the
PPAGLA.

JIMMIE JAMES WINS AWARD OF DISTINCTION
Just One More, Jr • September 2006
J
6
immie James has
experienced violence in a way that
most of us never will.
He has seen it on the
streets, and he has seen
the way it affects kids.
All around him, he has
seen gang violence
destroy families and
lives. So he decided to
do something about it.
James used the most
powerful tool at his disposal to combat violence
in the streets: his camera. With no budget and
little help he put his
heart on his sleeve and
talent to work. For his
efforts he received the
Award of Distinction
from The Videographer
Awards.
James was selected
from over 2,300 entries
in the 2006 competition.
He received the award
in April.
As a freelance videographer, and a member
of the PPAGLA, James
wrote, produced, directed, shot and edited the
documentary titled
“OGs Refuse to Give Up
and Stop.” The 50minute film interlaces
interviews, and re-enact-
ments along with video
clips and still photographs depicting gang
violence in the streets of
Los Angeles.
In the opening scene,
decrepit old gang
bangers hang out on a
street corner. They sit
on the curb with crutches, walkers and a
wheelchair discussing
their refusal to give up a
life of crime. Soon, a
gangster in a wheelchair
rolls past and pulls a
gun for a drive-by
shooting.
The satire is followed
with interviews from
leaders in the African
American community
who talk about the effect
that gang violence has in
their neighborhoods.
The focus of the film is
to find a solution.
Prominently featured are
Yvonne B. Burk, Los
Angeles County
Supervisor for the 2nd
District; Ron Dungee,
Managing Editor of the
Los Angeles Sentinel;
Roosevelt F. Dorn,
Mayor of the city of
Inglewood as well as
many clergymen, musicians and police officers.
James hopes that the
film will have a chilling
effect for gangsters and
school aged children
who see it. It has been
screened at the Watts
Towers, in Los Angeles
schools and on community cable channels.

ODDS & ENDS
‘THE ART OF PHOTOJOURNALISM’
T
he Press Photographers Assn. is proud to
announce its inaugural gallery
exhibit, “The Art of
Photojournalism.”
Fifty Los Angeles-area photojournalists
are showing their work at Bel Air Camera
through the end of September.
Bel Air Camera is at 10925 Kinross
Ave. in Westwood, and the gallery is open
during Bel Air Camera’s regular business
hours.
Photographers from the Associated Press,
Reuters, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles
Daily News, Ventura County Star, PressEnterprise, Pasadena Star-News, San Gabriel
Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram
and many other publications will present
some of their most artistic photojournalism.
Images from around the world and Southern
California, including portraits, news, sporting
events and human interest situations are in the
show. The curated exhibit seeks to highlight
photojournalism that goes beyond basic reporting, presenting images that are rich with artistic
qualities, from the picturesque to the surreal.

MESSAGE,
from page 3
to replace the flag with a larger
version of Old Glory that could be
seen from the entire 7.5 square
mile island. It was high noon.
Rosenthal set the shutter at a
400th of a second, and made history.
He was awarded the Pulitzer
Prize for his photograph.
But that was only an accolade
for what many argue as the best
photograph ever taken in a time of
war. The picture has been reproduced countless times in newspapers, magazines, on calendars,
postage stamps, and even immortalized in bronze.
The image was used as an inspirational symbol for a War Bond
drive in 1945 that raised $26.3 billion. The photo was the model for
the gigantic bronze Marine Corps
Memorial in Arlington, Va. The
monument stands 110 feet tall and
weighs more than 100 tons.
Now that’s a photo with impact.
That is a photograph that inspired
emotion, invoked a lot of thought,
and probably changed the world.
Joe Rosenthal died peacefully in
his sleep at the Atria Tamalpais
Creek assisted living center in
Novato on Aug. 20. He was 94.
