THE CITY OF WESTLAKE VILLAGE Mayor Philippa Klessig City Events Calendar 3120 0 Oak Cr e st D r ive Westlake Villag e , C A 91 3 61 www.wlv.o r g City Council What do I do with my old light bulbs? If you have old incandescent light bulbs, you may wrap them up in newspaper or paper towels and put them in your regular waste bin. These bulbs contain no mercury and are too thin to be recycled. If you have fluorescent light bulbs of any kind including Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs), they are considered hazardous waste and cannot be placed in a trash bin. These bulbs contain minor amounts of mercury and need to be disposed of properly. Residents are urged to be cautious when wrapping up the items for transport in the hazardous waste bins. Residents may call the City's recycling hotline and schedule a pick-up as part of the doorto-door hazardous waste program. Residents may also drop off their light bulbs at the Batteries Plus in Thousand Oaks, and the Home Depot in Newbury Park and West Hills. What is composting and how do I start? Composting is the decomposition of plant remains and other onceliving materials to make an earthy, dark, crumbly substance that is excellent for adding to houseplants or enriching garden soil. It is the way to recycle your yard and kitchen wastes, and is a critical step in reducing the volume of garbage needlessly sent to landfills for disposal. City residents are eligible to receive one free tumbler-type home composting container. Residents may request the tumbler by calling (805) 522-9400. There is a $25 delivery fee. Free CERT Training to be Held Begin n in g Ma rch 12t h Public Safety Corner Quick Guide to GAS SAFETY The following safety tips are provided by the So Cal Gas Company. Use your senses to alert you to a gas leak. If you suspect a gas leak, don't light a match, cigarette, candle, or turn on lights or electrical appliances. Immediately leave the area, and from a safe location call Southern California Gas Company at 1-800-427-2200 or 911. Preparing to dig in your yard? Call before you dig. Underground pipelines can be anywhere. Be sure to call 811 two business days in advance to schedule a nocost service appointment to mark the locations of buried, utility owned lines serving your property. In the event of an emergency, know where your gas meter is located and keep a 12 inch or larger adjustable wrench with your emergency supplies to shut off the meter. Equip your home with a carbon monoxide alarm. California's Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act of 2010 requires that, as of July 1, 2011, all single family homes with a fossil burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage be equipped with an approved carbon monoxide alarm. All other residential units must have a carbon monoxide alarm by January 1, 2013. Keep your gas appliances operating safely and efficiently. Make sure to have So Cal Gas or a licensed, qualified professional check your gas appliances every year.
