Meet Actor Takaaki Enoki at the Lecture and Screening of Hanjiro at the JCCC
Talk by Takaaki Enoki and Takafumi Saigo with screening movie“Hanjiro”
On Saturday October 23, one of Japan’s leading actors, Takaaki Enoki,
is coming to the JCCC to introduce his new movie “Hanjiro”.
Hanjiro, born from Tadaaki Enoki’s passion to depict the true beauty
of Japanese spiritual culture, brings samurai and Imperial Japanese
Army General Toshiaki Karino (Hanjiro Nakamura) to life.
It was the end of the Edo period. Hanjiro was born into a low class
Samurai family and was responsible for looking after his mother and
sister by growing potatoes on poor land. He later went to Kyoto with
Saigo Takamori, who was a leading figure among young samurai in
Satsuma. Hanjiro was appointed to an important position by Saigo
for his courage of heart and sword skills; his dedication and generous
character endeared him to all samurai in Kyoto. In the transition
between the Edo period and Meiji Restoration, he made his mark. He
became a high ranking officer in the new Imperial Army and eventually,
Hanjiro became a brigadier general in the early years of the Imperial
Japanese Army.
After Saigo lost the battle for power over “Seikanron” to his rival
Okubo Toshimichi, Saigo resigned his position, and he and Hanjiro returned to Satsuma. Five years later the great Satsuma Rebellion
broke out….
In his talk Takaaki Enoki will discuss about the movie and spirit of Japanese martial arts.
Takafumi Saigo, acclaimed potter, will be also visiting the JCCC and talk about the historical background of movie and his great
grandfather Takamori Saigo.
Screening of Hanjiro will follow.

The Road to Asia Festival 2010 - 10th Anniversary Edition!!
As we say goodbye to summer and head into fall, anticipation for The Road to Asia Festival

November 7. Make sure that you come and help us celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this
fantastic multicultural festival of arts and culture!
This weekend has the JCCC packed with the richness and exciting diversity of

Samurai Myths and Realities
Ishizue Award
George Hewson is back this
fall to conduct 2 seminars.
The first one, Samurai Myths
and Realities, will attempt to
dispel many of the common
misunderstanding about the
samurai. It will be an evening
of scholarly and entertaining
discussion on the warrior class that ruled Japan for seven hundred
years. No previous knowledge of Japanese history and culture is
required.
The JCCC Board of Directors
is pleased to announce a new
recognition award called the
Ishizue Award. The Ishizue Award
acknowledges and expresses
our appreciation and respect to
members or friends of the Japanese
Canadian community who have
made exceptional contributions to the Japanese Canadian Cultural
Centre.
The name Ishizue, meaning cornerstone or foundation, pays
tribute to the 75 families who, at significant personal financial risk,
guaranteed the original mortgage on the JCCC property at 123
Wynford Drive in the early 1960’s.
The inaugural recipients of this annual award are a very
distinguished group of people who have each made significant lifelong contributions to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. They
are: Pat Adachi, Sue (and Bob- posthumous) Kadoguchi, Coby
and Yone Kobayashi (post humously) and Fred Sasaki.
We are pleased to cordially invite you to honour these
distinguished award recipients at an intimate and elegant dinner on
Wednesday November 10, 2010 at 6:30pm in the Shokokai Court
at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Black tie optional.
Tickets are $150 each. Please fill out the form in this month’s
newsletter and return to the JCCC to reserve your space.
George Hewson, B.A., M.A., B.Ed., OCT is a 6th degree black
belt martial arts instructor and the President of the Canadian
Aikido Federation, a teacher at the Royal Ontario Museum, and a
member of the JCCC Board of Directors. He has lived and studied
in Japan.

November Movie Night: TOKYO STORY
One of Cinema’s Great Masterpieces come to the JCCC
Yasujiro Ozu’s 1953 masterpiece Tokyo Story (Tokyo Monogatari)
follows an aging couple, Tomi and Sukichi, on their journey from their
rural village to visit their two married children in bustling, postwar
Tokyo. Their reception is disappointing: too busy to entertain them,
their children send them off to a health spa. After Tomi falls ill she
and Sukichi return home, while the children, grief-stricken, hasten
to be with her. From a simple tale unfolds one of the greatest of all
Japanese films. Starring Ozu regulars Chishu Ryu and Setsuko
Hara, the film reprises one of the director’s favorite themes—that
of generational conflict—in a way that is quintessentially Japanese
and yet so universal in its appeal that it continues to resonate as
one of cinema’s greatest masterpieces.
Tokyo Story has twice appeared in Sight & Sound magazine's
'Top Ten' list of the greatest films ever made.
This film will be presented in high resolution Blu-Ray technology
for an exceptionally clear image.
Date: Thursday November 25, 2010
Time:
7:00pm
Admission: $6 JCCC members, $8 non-members

Holiday Chocofest!
Movie Screening, Bake-off and More!
On Sunday December 12, 2010, the JCCC is launching the first
of what we hope would become a regular event at the Centre – a
family anime movie day!
We will be showing a Japanese animated movie, “Chocolate
Underground”. For all those chocoholics out there, this is a movie
not to be missed! Imagine if all sweets became illegal, how far are
you willing to go for chocolate and desserts? Two boys, Huntley
and Smudger, stand up to fight against this ban, and with help from
their friends, they begin their underground chocolate fest!
In the spirit of
the movie, as well as
the holiday season,
the JCCC will also be
holding a Bake-Off
Challenge on the day
before the screening.
So come with your
best chocolate creation
in hand for your chance to win a 20 inch Barberry Chocolate
Tube, courtesy of SOMA Chocolatemaker. For further guidelines
regarding the Challenge, please see our flyer insert in this issue of
the newsletter.
On the day, everyone will also get a chance to sample all the
entries, and you can judge for yourselves which is the best one!
This is truly a holiday event, with something for the whole family!
Keep your eyes out for more information in the coming newsletter.

From the JCCC Board of Directors
Welcome to the first monthly
information update from the JCCC
Board of Directors! We want to
make sure that all of our members
are informed and aware of the
priorities that we are focused
on to ensure that the JCCC is a
vibrant and financially successful
organization.
Since this is the first update,
we thought it would be important
to start with the Mission and
strategies that will guide activities
and annual plans over the next 5
years
JCCC board members serving food at
Arigato Day.
At our Annual General
Meeting on June 21, 2010, we
talked about the update to our ongoing strategic planning process
that resulted in a refined Mission statement and key strategies for
the future.
The Mission is our ultimate purpose and explains why our
organization exists. The JCCC Mission Statement now states:
The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) is a notfor-profit organization that offers programs, services and a
gathering place to celebrate Japanese and Japanese Canadian
culture.
In executing our mission we,
- take pride in our heritage, creating a lasting tribute to the
unique history and contributions of past generations,
- bridge generations as the means for the continuing evolution
of our community and
- demonstrate the importance of tolerance and acceptance of
cultural diversity for the benefit of all Canadians
We focused our planning on seven key priorities to guide us into
the future.
- Achieving financial stability
- Creating ownership of the JCCC by all segments of the community (attract ijusha)
- Improving JCCC governance
- Increasing the number and variety of volunteers
- Developing an improved web presence (expand from regional platform to a global one)
- Maintaining and broadening membership involvement and participation
- Increasing programs and deliver a more modern programming vision (to attract different generations)
We will do our best to ensure that the JCCC continues to be a
welcoming, exciting, and successful place for all to visit, participate,
meet new friends, work and volunteer.
Thank you for your continued support.

The Japanese Canadian Experience
Conference:Sharing Our Stories of the
War Years - November 19 – 21, 2010
Sedai Corner
by Lisa Uyeda
The Sedai Project is committed to collecting, documenting,
preserving and sharing the history of the Japanese Canadians. We,
the Sedai Committee, collect and preserve the Japanese Canadian
history through audio and video recordings in a relaxed interview
format. We continue to search for all Japanese Canadians who
were born pre-war and during the war years to come and share
their stories with us.
The Sedai Committee is pleased to report another successful
month. For the month of August, 10 interviews were completed.
As of August 31, 2010, we have a total of 57 individuals who have
devoted their time and stories to the Sedai project! On behalf of
the Sedai Committee we would like to extend our sincerest thankyou to Polly Shimizu, Ross Shin, Roy Matsui, Yukio Ode, Laiko
Matsubayashi, Rose Aihoshi, Chiyo Seko, Jim Koyanagi, George
Masuda, Tosh Hashimoto, Frank Shimoda, Harold Takayesu, and
Stony Nakano.
Within the month of August, Sedai was fortunate enough to
be included in a unique group interview arranged by Norm Ibuki
and Jim Koyanagi. Norm Ibuki led a wonderful discussion on
the history of Japanese Canadian baseball with Jim Koyanagi,
George Masuda, Tosh Hashimoto, and Frank Shimoda. Many fond
memories and stories were shared about their involvement with the
Japanese Canadian Hamilton Nisei Baseball league.
Thank-you again to all of those who continue to contribute to
the Sedai Project! Our progress is growing thanks to everyone’s
efforts but we still need your help to build our community’s history.
Everyone has a different story, a different experience and a different
memory and we believe each memory is important and enriched
with our Japanese Canadian history! Please help us preserve the
Japanese Canadian history for our future generations and anyone
who wishes to learn more about our history as Japanese Canadians
by contacting Lisa Uyeda at 6 Garamond Court, Toronto, ON, M3C
1Z5 or [email protected] or [email protected] or by telephone at
416-441-2345 ext 303. In the meantime you can also find more
information about the project at www.sedai.ca.
We look forward to hearing from you!!
This conference, hosted by the JCCC, is dedicated to preserving
and sharing the Japanese Canadian history of the war years (19411945), and is a tribute to our founding generations. This conference
is an opportunity for the Nisei’s to share their war years memories
with family, friends and their community. We welcome all stories –
from the camps, sugar beet farms, self-supporting locations, prisoner
of war camps, the armed forces, and towns across Canada and
Japan. This is an educational opportunity for everyone, completely
unique from any other and these unique stories are not found in the
history text books!
Thank-you to everyone who has already registered for the
conference! For the individuals who have yet to register, the
registration deadline is Friday, November 5, 2010. Those who
have registered by September 30, 2010 have automatically been
entered into our Early Bird Draw to win a gift certificate to EDO
– Fine Japanese Dining with award winning Executive Chef Ryo
Ozawa! The winner will be contacted during the weekend of the
conference.
Previously a list of questions was distributed (the yellow paper)
with the registration form in the August 2010 JCCC Newsletter.
These questions can be used as a guideline to help the speaker
participants formulate their war year’s story. Each speaker
participant will be given the opportunity to speak for 20 minutes.
It is not necessary to write out and hand in these stories before
the conference but you can if you wish to do so. To ensure the
speaker participants are comfortable sharing their 20 minute story,
the speakers are allowed to read their story, or bring notes for
reminders of dates and places, or neither.
The last two JCCC Newsletters (August 2010 & September
2010) have included detailed information about the conference. If
you missed this information or require another copy you can pick
up an information package and brochure from the front desk at
the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. You can also find the
information online at www.jccc.on.ca or www.sedai.ca, or contact
Lisa Uyeda. If you believe in the importance of preserving your
family’s history for your grandchildren and great grandchildren and
anyone who wishes to learn more about our history as Japanese
Canadians, we encourage you to please call or email us to discuss
this amazing Conference. Each memory is important and should be
shared because not one will be the same! Each story is enriched
with our Japanese Canadian history!

Big Success for the Musical Camp and Musical “Robinson Robinson”!!
Kids, both from Toronto and Japan, enjoyed a memorable time and gained many life lessons through the Kids Musical Camp and the final
stage performance of “Robinson Robinson”. This unique event was coordinated by the Jpals committee of the J-Comm committee and the

Kyudo Seminar in Toronto
by The Kyudo Association of Canada, Toronto Section
The Kyudo Association of Canada (KAC), Toronto Section, held
its first seminar on July 17th and 18th at the JCCC and at an
outdoor facility in Grimsby. The KAC is the newest member of the
International Kyudo Federation (IKYF).
The seminar was taught by
Minnesota-based Carly Bornsensei (renshi, 5th dan) from the
American Kyudo Renmei (AKR).
Born-sensei provided intensive
training and feedback (group and
one-on-one) on Taihai (ceremonial
shooting), etiquette, equipment care and maintenance. On July
17th, emphasis was placed on Taihai, and shooting was limited
to Makiwara (point-blank range practice targets). The next day
was dedicated to shooting form and aim, which were practiced
using a 28-meter Kinteki range provided by one of the seminar
participants.
The seminar would not have been possible without many
months of preparation and leadership by Mie Takahashi (5th dan),
who teaches the Kyudo class at the JCCC. Takahashi-sensei was
responsible for negotiating the arrangements for Born-sensei and
the JCCC dojo and set-up. She was assisted by the cooperation of
many students who study Kyudo at the JCCC. A reception dinner
and silent auction on the first evening, and a BBQ on the second
day added to the camaraderie and enjoyment of all participants.
when making a gift of appreciated securities (either stocks and or
mutual funds). Individuals can now make a donation to the JCCC
or JCCC Foundation while eliminating the tax owing on their capital
gains allowing the community to be their beneficiary rather than
CRA and the Federal government.
It is important to note that if you choose to sell appreciated
securities during your lifetime or if these assets are liquidated
through your estate, tax must be paid on 50 per cent of the capital
gains on those securities. This new provision provides an opportunity
to eliminate a significant tax liability that would otherwise eventually
have to be paid.
A donation of publicly traded securities can provide you with an
unexpected means to make a significant contribution to the JCCC
or the Foundation with a relatively low-cost to you as now when
you make a donation of equities, bonds, or mutual fund units to the
JCCC, your taxable capital gain is eliminated.
Advantages of Donating of Securities
• The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will issue
you a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value
of the gift of securities to be used for tax purposes.
The fair market value will be the closing price of the
securities on the date the securities are received
by the JCCC.
• By giving the securities directly to the JCCC, your
tax owing on your capital gain is eliminated.
• If your donation exceeds the amount eligible for a
tax credit in the year your gift is made, the excess
credit may be carried forward up to five years.
• If you leave securities to the JCCC through your
Will, your estate will receive the same tax benefits.
Gifts made through your Will can be claimed up to
100 percent of your net annual income in the
year of death and the year preceding.
Kikyo Exhibit a Success
On Sunday August 29, approximately 60 people attended the
opening reception and talk at the Gallery of the Centre. Peter
Wakayama, the chair of the Heritage Committee welcomed the
gathering and introduced Terry Watada, writer, musician, teacher
and a long time Festival supporter and performer, discussed
his days at the Festival and his association with Tamio. Terry
introduced Tamio Wakayama who discussed the beginnings and
development of the Festival in the Powell Street downtown area
where Japan town was located in prewar Vancouver. Both Terry
and Tamio delighted the audience with highly informative and funny
stories. Mayu Takasaki, one the original group of organizers was
introduced and answered questions from the audience.
The exhibit is on loan from the Powell Street Festival Society
and was organized by the Heritage Arts committee. Bryce Kanbara
curated and installed the Exhibit. There are dynamic photographs
taken over several years as well as commentaries from numerous
people as part of the exhibit. Tamio captured the joy and enthusiasm
of this annual summer community event in Vancouver which attracts
hundreds of visitors and participants on a weekend in August.
Do Good by Doing Well - Reduce Tax by
Donating Assets
In 2006, the Federal Government announced the elimination of the
capital gains tax on gifts of stocks and mutual funds to registered
charities. This has greatly benefited not-for-profit organizations,
including the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.
Under the old rules, donors were required to pay tax on 25 per
cent of capital gains on this type of donation. The new provision
offers donors an opportunity to realize very significant tax savings
10
Consider the following example: Mr. Tanaka gives the JCCC
or JCCC Foundation publicly traded securities that he bought for
$15,000 but are now worth $25,000. The capital gain is on these
securities is $10,000. Mr. Tanaka’s assumed combined federal and
provincial marginal tax rate is 45 percent.

In summary, by donating $25,000 worth of appreciated
securities to the JCCC, Mr. Tanaka has eliminated any capital gains
tax and has saved an additional $1,125 in taxes owing.
To assist members in making donations without eroding their
asset base, the JCCC has licensed GIFTABULATOR®, a software
that calculates the impact of various types of donations and visually
demonstrates the immediate tax implications of donating versus
making a bequest.

Over 40 people (and their spouses) marked their 85th birthday at the Ushidoshi gathering in August 2010 at the JCCC. Local celebrants as well as those who travelled from Thunder
Bay, British Columbia, and California reunited for the 5th rendition of the Ushidoshi Party.
In 1990, Kay Fujiwara and George Tsushima realized that many of their peers were also celebrating their 65th birthday. To commemorate this milestone they thought, “let’s have
a party!” and thus the event was born. The gathering needed a name and Tats Hori came up with “Ushidoshi” as 1925, their birth year, was the year of the Ox. The chairperson of the
inaugural event was Masako Yoshida and via news articles in the JCCC newsletter and the New Canadian, over 60 attendees (and their spouses) celebrated at the JCCC. Held every
5 years, the party always features a delicious meal, fun entertainment and wonderful company. Happy 85th Ushidoshi!
Happy Birthday Ushidoshi!

Dear Members,
The JCCC Board of Directors is pleased to announce a new recognition award called the Ishizue Award. The Ishizue Award
acknowledges and expresses our appreciation and respect to members or friends of the Japanese Canadian community
who have made exceptional contributions to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.
The name Ishizue, meaning cornerstone or foundation, pays tribute to the 75 families who, at significant personal financial
risk, guaranteed the original mortgage on the JCCC at 123 Wynford Drive in the early 1960’s.
The inaugural recipients of this annual award are a very distinguished group of people who have each made significant lifelong contributions to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. They are:
Pat Adachi
Sue (and Bob- posthumous) Kadoguchi
Coby and Yone Kobayashi (post humously)
Fred Sasaki
We are pleased to cordially invite you to honour these distinguished award recipients at an intimate and elegant dinner on
Wednesday November 10th, 2010 at 6:30PM in Shokokai Court at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Black tie optional.
Tickets are $150 each. Please fill out the form below and return to the JCCC to reserve your space. Please RSVP before
November 1st, 2010. Limited seating available.
On behalf of all of the directors of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, we look forward to spending a special evening of
