‘Black Friday’ is mixed bag
for
local businesses
CNN reported Monday that while there was a nationwide 3.5% in-
crease in foot traffic on Black Friday, retail sales actually dropped by
nearly 2% to $11.2 billion. The figures were gloomier in the West: foot
traffic actually dropped 11% against the 2011 figure.
Locally, both K-5 and Olsens reported good turnout for the traditional day of savings, as did the Copper News Book Store.
“Business was great and exceeded our expectations on both the grocery and the hardware sides,” said store manager Maribel Reyes. “The
advertising is very effective.”
Carol Klinefelter said that although K-5’s business wasn’t as big as it
has been in past years, “still, it was real decent. We had people waiting
for us to open Friday morning.”
“We sold a lot of books on Friday,” said Dick Ducic, manager of the
bookstore. “It was a big day for us. “ Ducic, like Reyes and Klinefelter,
said that advertising played a big part.
As with many other retailers, both Family Dollar and Dollar General focused efforts on Thanksgiving Day sales. While a Dollar General
spokesman said there was no real uptick in business, Jeanette Martinez
at Family Dollar reported that a lot of toys, Christmas decorations, and
sale items were sold. Other local retailers reported either normal sales
or a decrease. — many local businesses were closed for Thanksgiving
and some were closed on both Thursday and Friday, putting time with
family ahead of profit margins.
In its reporting, Reuters said that on-line Black Friday sales increased
26% from last year‘s figure, and that as a result of stores beginning sales
the day before, there was a 21% increase in the number of people visiting stores in person or on-line Thanksgiving Day.
Reuters also reported that on-line sales for “Cyber Monday” were
expected to top $1.5 billion.

this year’s nominations for Western Pima County Community
Council representatives. Recommendations for representatives
of odd-numbered districts – 1, 3,
5, 7, 9, and 11 - will be accepted
through Friday, November 30,
with election taking place at the
Thursday, December 6, meeting.
All new candidates must be legal
residents of the district they seek
to represent, be registered voters
in Arizona, submit a notarized
statement declaring the candidate
has not been convicted of a felony or crime involving fraud, and
submit a one-page resume listing
qualifications. Qualifications
should include education, work
experience or any previous community involvement, and a paragraph on the goals envisioned for
western Pima County.
Candidates for reelection must
submit a form stating their intention to run and a statement declaring that the previous notarized
statement is still true. All paperwork must be completed and received by the election committee
one week prior to the election.

County health has
more flu vaccine
available for kids
Pediatric doses of flu vaccine, in a nasal mist form, are
now available at the Pima County
Health Department’s office in Ajo,
120 W. Estrella. Clinics will be
held the first and second Wednesdays of the month; those interested in having children immunized
should call 387-7206.
The vaccine is administered
free for children not covered by
insurance or AHCCCS. The agerange for the pediatric flu vaccine
is newborn through the 18th year
(up to the 19th birthday).
The Ajo office does not have
any adult flu shots available,
though they do have some other
vaccines for both children and
adults.
The county health department
offers many services, including
vaccinations and free confidential
pregnancy testing.
AUSD school board
to meet next week
The Ajo Unified School District board has its study session
meeting Tuesday, December 4,
and will meet in regular session
Wednesday, December 5. Both
meetings begin at 5:30 p.m.
Meetings are held in the board
meeting room on the AUSD campus. All meetings are open to the
public.

Edward B. “Lalo” Martinez,
74, died November 17, 2012, at
home in Ajo with his family by his
side after a brief illness.
He was born January 25, 1938,
in Litchfield Park to Julio & Refugia Martinez.
He moved to Ajo as a child and
lived here the rest of his life. He
was a 1956 graduate of Ajo High
School.
He served in the US Army and
was stationed in Germany.
He worked for Phelps Dodge
Corporation for 26 years, then
worked for the Salt River Project
in Phoenix for 13 years before retiring.
Mr. Martinez was a member of
Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church.
He belonged to the American Citizens Social Club and the
VFW.
He enjoyed being with his family and watching football, especially the UA Wildcats.
His family notes he was preceded in death by his parents, by
his grandmother, by his sister Maria M. Bon, and by his brother-inlaw, Heriberto Bon.
He is survived by his brother
& sister-in-law, Gilbert & Mary
Martinez; by his sister Ramona
Martinez; by his nephews & their
wives, Raymond & Lupe Martinez
& their family and Julian & Vicki
Martinez & their family, Heriberto
& Alicia Bon & their family; and
by his nieces and their husbands,

Visitation will be held Friday,
November 30, from 4 to 6 p.m.
in Douglass Funeral Home, followed by rosary there at 6 p.m.
Mass will be celebrated by Father
Peter Nwachukwu in Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church at 10
a.m. Saturday, December 1. A reception will be held at the American Citizens Social Club following mass. Burial will be at noon on
Saturday December 8, in the Ajo
Cemetery.

Eduardo “Eddie” Fonseca Lopez died October 21, 2012, in UCI
Irvine Medical Center in Irvine,
California.
He was born January 2, 1941,
in Ajo, to Conception “Concha”
(Fonseca) & Benito M. Lopez. He
was a part of a large family, many
of whom were born in Sonora,
Mexico.
“Eddie’s sense of humor and
love of family and friends will be
missed by us all,” said his family.
He attended school in Ajo and
lived here until moving to California in 1967.
He was employed by Lucky
Stores as a baker for 33 years.
He and his wife Anna were
married for 35 years and made
their home in Whittier, California.
He is survived by his wife,
Anna Lopez, and their children,
Evan Lopez and Alicia Lopez. He
is also survived by his first wife,
Nancy Lopez, and their children
Lalo Lopez and Steven Lopez.
Other survivors include his grandchildren, Cody, Alec, and Cameron Lopez, and by many nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
A private memorial service was
held on November 3, in Whittier,
California.

Donald Edwin Lee Lewis Sr.,
88, died in Redding, California,
October 4, 2012, after a brief illness.
He was born March 15, 1924,
in Woodland, Washington, to Dell
O & Rosa Lee Lewis.
He was a graduate of Kalama
High School in Washington.
Mr. Lewis served in World War
II in the 63rd infantry, 254th division, Company L and Company
M, known as the Fire and Blood
Infantry. He received the Silver
and Bronze stars for his heroism
in combat.
After serving in the Army he
owned a log truck, and worked
as a deck hand on a tugboat on
the Columbia River. In 1948 he
moved to California with his parents.
“Don married the love of his
life, Millie, in 1953 and raised a
large and loving family which was
his pride and joy,” said his family.
He was a Cub Scout leader in the
60’s and was a proud Boy Scout in
his youth as well.
He made a career in the US
Forest Service, retiring in 1965.
Mr. Lewis spent the last 22 winters in Arizona, staying at Coyote
Howls in Why before purchasing
property in Ajo 12 years ago. “He
enjoyed going to the Old Time
Fiddle contest every February and
enjoyed playing cards with friends
and family. He loved the Ajo area
and enjoyed seeing all his friends
from other states every winter,”
said his daughter. “He wasn’t a
joiner so didn’t belong to any organizations but loved helping out
wherever he could. He was always
doing handiwork for the people
who couldn’t do it for themselves
and traveling throughout Arizona
in the winter.”
Mr. Lewis is survived by his
wife Millie Lewis, by his daughters & sons-in-law, Carol & Bruce
Huang-Cole, Ramona Smith, and
Diane & Don Darrah; by his sons
& daughters-in-law, Donald Lee,
Jr. & Christie Lewis and Dell Lee
& Randy Lewis; and by his 10
grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces
and nephews.
Services have been held in California.

These two mobile homes have been parked on the North Street side of the Cabeza Prieta
National Wildlife Refuge administrative area for some time, and are now being prepped and readied for occupancy. Refuge manager Sid Slone said that the housing, obtained for free from the
General Services Administration, will be used for interns and other staff who have had to rent accommodations. “It will help conserve on expenses, and if we don’t need them, they can be pulled
out,” said Slone. The staff now includes three interns, one who is shared with Organ Pipe Cactus
National Monument, and has had as many as six interns in the past.
Garden Club to
hear Mekelburg
The Ajo Garden Club will meet
at the public library on Monday,
December 3, at 10 a.m. The agenda includes a speaker, business
meeting, and election of officers.
Master Gardener Mike Mekelburg will speak on “Things that
make you go Hmmm?” The public is invited to attend and learn
lesser-known tidbits about horticulture.
The Ajo Garden Club has
monthly speakers about gardening, promotes Ajo beautfication with its monthly clean-ups,
and awards a Yard of the Month
plaque.
“Besides being a great community booster club, there are also
regular socials for members, such
as full moon howls. Come and

CSA to resume
virtual market,
hold garden tour
The Ajo Center for Sustainable Agriculture virtual farmers
market will resume activities on
December 1. Local growers, canners, bakers, and others may feature produce or products on the
virtual farmers market site. Contact the CSA at ajocsa@hotmail.

announced it will be donating the
proceeds of the first virtual farmers market of the season to the
fundraiser for local artist Claire
Bistline and her daughter Erin,
who are both battling identical
types of cancer. Garden or kitchen
surplus may be donated to the fundraiser by contacting the CSA at
their e-mail address.
The Ajo CSA will hold its
fourth annual tour of gardens in
the community during the Second
Saturday event on December 8,
from noon to 2 p.m. Anyone who
would like to display their garden
and share gardening methods and
tricks of the trade is asked to contact the CSA at the above online
address by December 1. The tour
will end with a garden party and
light refreshments at the Loma
Bonita garden on Esperanza Avenue near Sahuaro Road.
In its Curley Courtyard Garden
project, the Ajo CSA noted that
the garden has now been planted
with the help of staff, the Get Going Get Growing youth program,
and many volunteers. A variety
of winter vegetables and a greenmanure cover crop were planted,
the latter to develop a local sustainable methodology to be shared
with other gardeners.
ACGC to have
work session at
Orilla St. garden
The Ajo Community Garden
Consortium in conjunction with
Humming House will be holding
a work and educational session at
the community garden behind the
Curley School complex on Orilla
Street on Saturday, December 1,
from 9 to 11 a.m. Projects being
planned include cleaning out the
greenhouse so it can be used for
plant propagation, finishing the
succession-planting of the communal plots, and repairing the
compost bins. Kathleen Stevens of
Humming House will be on hand
to answer gardening questions.
The ACGC is looking for materials for upcoming projects.

as yogurt or sour cream cups for
starting cuttings for the labyrinth
garden at the Rock Church garden
site, wooden pallets, plywood and
wooden stakes for signage, acrylic
paint, unwanted CDs, short pieces
of rebar and PVC, bulletin boards
or cork boards, peg boards, trellis
or arbor materials, benches, and
seats.

December Birthday Greetings:
Don & Victoria Armstrong sang a variety of western and southwestern songs on Tuesday at
the library. They have performed together for 40 years while raising a family. They lived in the
Santa Fe area and spent winters in Arizona before moving to Tucson four years ago.
The couple performed some orginal compositions and some well-known tunes. They sang the
praises of tortillas and verde and rojo chili, while cursing javelinas. The appreciative audience was
treated to an encore.

Charlie Tapp, the mastermind
behind much of the Plaza’s
Christmas decoration, is hoping
people will donate ornaments
– specifically large, handmade
ornaments that will withstand
weather conditions.
Ornaments may be dropped off

Library stays a
busy place
Clark Lohr spoke on Saturday at the library to kick off the
Friends of the Library’s author series. Lohr talked about his first
novel, Devil’s Kitchen, which was published in 2011. He said it
was a border crime romance featuring hero detective Manny
Aguilar and his paralegal girlfriend, Reina. The book is available
at the Copper News Book Store.
The author-photographer gave a preview of his next novel,
The Devil on 85. The reference is to Highway 85 as he takes his
characters on the road to solve a mystery set in the Ajo area.
Lohr was born in Montana, but moved to Arizona in his teens
and has spent time conducting research in the area, including
drives and camping expeditions to the Cabeza Prieta National
Wildlife Refuge.

Bistline benefit is
this Saturday
Ajo artist Claire Bistline was
diagnosed in August with the most
aggressive type of breast cancer. while she was in Washington
taking care of her daughter Erin,
who is being treated for the same
aggressive cancer. The motherdaughter team is currently in Spokane for mutual support during
treatment.
A yard sale is planned for Saturday, December 1, beginning at 8
a.m. at the Bruce & Kathy Davis
residence, 200 Morondo Avenue.
Funds raised will be used toward
medical costs and transportation
for Bistline’s husband Terry Gonzalez to make visits from Ajo.

Arizona Humanities Council.

Kendall Hickman will display

reading, language arts, and
social studies teacher at Ajo
Unified School District.
She is certified to teach
elementary, upper elementary
and special education. She
attended East London High
School, obtained a higher
education diploma with
distinction in English in 1994
from the Transvaal College of
Education in Pretoria, South
Africa, and has enrolled in the
University of Phoenix for a
master’s degree in education
for English as a second
language.
Her teaching experience
began in 1995 in Boksburg,
South Africa. From 2001 to
2007 she taught in North
Carolina, and from 2007 to
the end of last school year in
Maryland.
“We are suffocating our
planet Earth and my wish is
to inspire my students to save
the environment,” she said.
She added that she became
a teacher because her father,
a retired superintendent of
education, loved to serve the
people, which inspired her to
do the same.
Beharie says she loves
the surroundings, sunsets,
mountains, festivals, and
people of Ajo.
She enjoys cooking for
her family, travel, zip-lining,
four-wheelers, and hang
gliding, and she says she
looks forward to para-sailing in
Puerto Peñasco. Her husband,
Kiran, also teaches at AUSD.
Their children, Shale, 14,
and Sashin, 11, attend public
school in Ajo.
Kiran Beharie is the new
fourth- and fifth-grade math
and science teacher at Ajo
Unified School District. He is
also the local PTSA secretary.
He attended school in
Springs, South Africa, in 1990
and obtained a higher education diploma in 1994 from
Transvaal College of Education in Pretoria, South Africa.
He obtained a master’s in
education in 2010, graduating
summa cum laude from the
University of Phoenix.
His teaching experience
began in 1995 in South Africa.
From 2001 to 2007 he taught
in North Carolina, where he
was a Local Advisor of the
Year and a finalist for Teacher
of the Year. From 2007 to the
end of last school year he
taught in Maryland.
“I would love to see all my
students succeed and for them
to believe that their learning
is the key to their future,” he
said. He added that he left law
school to become a teacher
because he found he loves
what he does and the students’
“aha” moment is his greatest
reward.
He says he loves the celebratory mood that surrounds
the community of Ajo during
football season, fall harvest,
Peace Day, and other events.
He said that the students in
his classes here are the best
kids he has had the pleasure
to work with in the 20 years he
has been in education.
In his spare time he loves
to fish, collect coins, and be
a dad and husband. His wife,
Charmaine, is also a teacher
at AUSD and their two children
attend school in Ajo.

Tax credit donations to the local Arizona school district directly
benefit the students in the school. benefitting the school, the students,
and the donors who get a tax credit on thier Arizona state income tax.
People who file a single tax return may donate $200 to the school
district. Those who file a joint return may donate $400 to the district. Tax credit donations may be used by the school for costs associated
with extracurricular student activities. This means that funds may be used
to defray expenses students incur for after school athletic activities, club
activities, or student government activities. The donor may designate
the activity for which the funds are donated, or they may let the district
leadership use the funds for what they deem the greatest need.

Most landscape plants, and especially those that are frost-sensitive, need to be “hardened off” before freezing night-time temperatures make an appearance. By irrigating less often this time of year,
plants will stop expending energy
to produce new leaves and will instead store up energy in their root
systems to get through winter dormancy, or semi-dormancy in most
winters in the low desert.
Using the recommended 1-23 ratio for irrigating landscape
plants, December and January
are the number 3 in the ratio. This
means, high-water-use plants such
as established citrus that were watered every week in the summer
and every 2 weeks in spring and
fall may now be watered every
3 weeks. Continue watering the
same amount each time – the root
zone has not shrunk in size – just
do it less often.
Keeping the same ratio, lowwater-use plants that are watered
every 3 weeks in summer and every 6 weeks in spring and fall may
now be watered every 9 weeks,
or once during the two coldest
months of winter. Low-water-use
plants include young native trees,
cape honeysuckle, oleander, Arizona yellow bells, young bougainvillea, and a plethora of others.
Now is also a good time to
gather up old sheets and blankets
to cover plants before a frost is
forecast. Trunks of very young
trees may be wrapped with newspaper or a commercial tree wrap
for the winter season.
Veterans are
to be recognized

The American Legion and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars will
honor three veterans on December
2 with an event that will include
a potluck. Being recognized for
their service to their country will
be Charles Tapp, Louie Ramirez,
and Bobby Trujillo.

Girls and boys drop openers

The Red Raiders opened their basketball season, Monday, November
19, against Division III Tonopah. Ajo is a Division IV team, and Tonopah’s enrollment is 3-4 times that of Ajo. The boys lost 78-11 while
the girls had a closer game, losing 48-19.
Tonopah’s much taller and more athletic lineup dominated the boards
often getting 3 or 4 offensive rebounds on a missed shot. Without the
ability to rebound, Ajo couldn’t get its fast break offense going. Also,
the excellent Tonopah squad proved difficult to guard and negated
much of Ajo’s man-to-man defense. While Coach English recognizes
the Raider squad has much to learn, getting beaten by 60+ points makes
it hard to see improvement.
The Lady Raiders did slightly better, though they still received a
30-point spanking. On occasion, the Ladies were able to run Coach
Harvey’s “motion offense” with some success. Still the end result demonstrated how thoroughly Tonopah dominated the game. The shorter
Lady Raiders were not able to rebound effectively.
Why the AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association) continues to insist
that small Division IV teams must play much larger schools continues
to be a hotly debated topic, but there is little sign of change on the part
of the AIA.
The Raiders play rival Gila Bend away on Tuesday, November 27 and
Division III opponent Eloy on Wednesday, November 28.

Monday, November 19. “As you can see it’s a good way to keep youngsters mentally and
physically fit,” said Lucila Malvido of Pima County Natural Resources, Parks & Recreation.
Soccer games are held Mondays in Walker Park. For youth ages 4 to 5, game time is 3:30
p.m.; for the 6 to 8 age group, the game begins at 4 p.m.; and for boys and girls ages 9 to 12, the
game is set at 4:30 p.m.

Famous golfer Ben Crenshaw once said, “My golf game’s off so
much that when I went fishing a week ago my first cast missed the lake.”
That about sums up my game lately, because I haven’t been out much,
but one of the great things about the game of golf is no one has to see
those shanked shots because you don’t always need other people to play
the game. If your golf buddies are too busy, too tired or disgusted with
their own game, you can always venture out alone when the course is
not very busy. After all, we are really playing against the course anyway
and sometimes it’s just easier to concentrate on our own shots without
the distraction of other players close by.
Bill Conley and Marty McCrystal were the only two out of eleven
men who made skins in last Monday’s Skins game. Conley took one on
hole #9 and McCrystal on #7.
Meanwhile, back at the clubhouse, Marty regaled the men with tales
from his latest crazy adventure. Seems he has been monkeying around
on a wild African safari running with wild zebras, chasing gazelles,
talking back to parrots, and riding elephants! I was told it was a scene
right out of National Geographic.
Tuesday, November 20, the Men’s Club had seventeen players on the
course with Dick Gates and Paul Barnhart both leading the field on the
front nine, each with a score of 64. Dick Gates birdied the right handicap
hole for the top spot while Tony McGarry shot a 68 for third place.
Three gents had their game spot on as well, as they all made chip-ins.
Bill Conley sunk two chip-in shots on #3 and #11; Paul Barnhart made
one on hole #1 and Mike Zozaya dropped one on #11.
Eleven couples enjoyed each other’s company Wednesday, November
21, in their weekly competition. The top four places included Bill and
Paula Doremus with a 28.2; Bud and Fran Turner scored a close second
with 28.8, Frank Milene and Carol Peek came in with a 30.6, and Joe
and Bea Trueba carded a 31.0. The Friday Pro-Am on November 23 was played on the front nine
with a good turnout of 29 players. There was a tie for first place at
three under par but the team led by Bill Doremus prevailed on the tiebreaking holes. Playing with Bill were Bob Glodowski, George Steckel,
Joe Gonzales, and Bea Trueba. Also at three under for second place
was the team of Captain Bill Browne, Bud Turner, Barb Martin, and
Binx Hoyem. Captain Greg Burton led his team to a third place finish
with two under. He had help from Ernie Ochoa, Marlene McCrystal, and
Norma Steckel.
Whether you are up to playing with friends in the weekly games at the

GED students Ryan Miguel and Edith Rios spent part of an afternoon last week sweeping debris
along the Plaza esplanade into a dustpan wielded by their supervisor, Sylvia Tatman-Burruss. Not

“We all understand that how we look on the outside communicates something to others about
how we are on the inside,” said Tatman-Burruss. “That is one of the lessons conveyed in the new
work-study option in the Las Artes GED program at the International Sonoran Desert Alliance.
Students learn skills by practicing them through real and meaningful work in the Ajo community.”
GED students are primarily helping with the maintenance of the Plaza, giving the area some
attention above and beyond the diligent work of the regular maintenance staff, Santos EspinozaCarranza and Aurora Landon, along with Friends of the Plaza volunteers.
Rios said she is learning practical work skills as well as the importance of issues such as being
on time, being efficient, and conducting herself properly in a public setting. “We’re helping out the
community and at the same time we’re learning how to work as a team,” she said.
As a large space that is a major focal point for community members and for visitors, the Plaza
work-study option fits well in the Las Artes GED plan, noted Tatman-Burruss. She said students
are paid to work from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday after their academic learning hours.
Volunteers are welcome to join the GED work crew at any time, she said, and words of encouragement
reinforce the importance of the students’ work as members of the community.

or so working on Saturday and
Sunday. Some work I can do at
home while watching NCIS or
Law & Order marathons. Other
chores have to be done at the
office.
If I come in on a Saturday
afternoon, my brother Hop
usually enlists my help folding the
Catholic Church bulletins. You’d
think that would make me avoid
Saturday afternoon and the extra
workload, but I don’t, and it’s not
because I am a kind, caring person
or trying to earn a few stars in my
crown. I do it for the jokes.
Every week, Father Peter
includes his jokes of the week,
which he garners from all over. A
week or so ago, it was —
A Sunday school teacher asked
his class, “If I sold my house and
my car, had a big garage sale and
gave all my money to the church,
would that get me into Heaven?
“No!” the children all
answered.
“If I cleaned the church every
day, mowed the yard, and kept
everything neat and tidy, would

Again the teacher asked, “Well,
then, if I were kind to animals and
gave candy to all the children, and
loved my wife, would that get me
into Heaven?”
Again, they all answered,

“Well then how can I get into

The located of the Corporation’s principal office shall be in
the City of Tucson, Pima County at 2553 E. Broadway
Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85716.
ARTICLE III – Purpose
The corporation is organized exclusively for charitable,
religious, and educational purposes, including, for such
purposes, the making of distributions to organizations that
qualify as exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) of
the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of
any future federal tax code.
The initial character of affairs of the corporation shall
include but not be limited to religious and charitable acts for
the purpose of communicating God’s grace and love to
those who are underserved, underprivileged, and detained.
Relief of the distressed will be addressed by providing
biblical materials and resources, reading glasses, and
outreach services including faith-based guidance, and
ministerial counseling through all means of communication.
The corporation will also provide supplies for the healing
arts to allow the detained and families of the detained an
opportunity to express their faith in God. The corporation’s
Christian beliefs and values are to be truly and sincerely
held as defined by well established and clearly defined by
public proxy.
Article IV – Board of Directors
The affairs of the Corporation shall be governed by a Board
of Directors whose number and term shall be provided in
the Bylaws of the Corporation. All decisions, including
amendments to these articles, shall be made by majority
vote of the Board of Directors. The names and addresses of

serve in such capacity until the first annual election of
directors, or until their successors are duly elected and

Article V – Membership
The Corporation will not have members.
Article VI – Earnings
No part of the net earnings of the corporation shall inure to
the benefit of, or be distributable to its members, trustees,

the corporation shall be the carrying on of propaganda, or
otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the
corporation shall be the carrying on of propaganda, or

Article VII – Dissolution
Upon the dissolution of the corporation, assets shall be
distributed for one or more exempt purposes within the
meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code,
or the corresponding section of nay future federal tax code,
or shall be distributed to the federal government, or to a state
or local government, for public purpose. Any such assets not
so disposed of shall be disposed of by a Court of Competent
Jurisdiction of the country in which the principal office of
the corporation is then located, exclusively for such purposes or to such organization or organizations, as said Court
shall determine, which are organized and operated exclusively for such purposes.
Article VIII - Discrimination
The organization will not practice or permit discrimination
on the basis of sex, age, race, national origin, religion, or
physical handicap or disability.

Blue Stake
A leading cause of disruption
to underground utility lines is external force damage that occurs
during excavation, according to
a Dig Safely website. Generally
this involves digging with a backhoe or other heavy equipment too
close to underground utilities.
Arizona Blue Stake laws require that a homeowner, business
owner, or contractor contact the
Blue Stake office at least two days
prior to digging to allow all utility
companies time to mark underground utility lines in the area of a
proposed dig.
One call does it all in the Blue
Stake system. Dialing 811, from
landline phones or cell phones,
offers a convenient shortcut to
the Blue Stake office. The 811
number was implemented by the
Federal Communications Commission in May 2007. If the threedigit shortcut does not work for
some reason, the old standby
1-800-Stake-It (800-782-5348)
may be used, or 602-659-7500.
Different utility companies use
different colored spray paint or
plastic whiskers to mark underground lines. All lines should be
marked within two days.
Blue Stake law states that only
manual (pick and shovel) digging
may be performed within two feet
on either side of a marked utility
line. Supporting and protecting
exposed lines from breakage is
also required.
Digging, as defined by Blue
Stake, is any disturbance of the
soil. Fortunately for homeowners,
an exemption exists that allows
for hoeing or manual digging on
their own property for gardening
purposes only.
Digging with pick and shovel
for other purposes still requires a
call to Blue Stake.
