Jesus Arcenio Montijo, 60,
died December 18, 2012, in Ajo.
He was born in Ajo on June 20,
1952, to Yolanda & Horacio Montijo. He was a lifelong resident and
attended school here.
He retired in August 2012 as
a bus driver with San Simon Elementary School.
Mr. Montijo was known to
family and friends as Arsenio. He
enjoyed roping, hunting, 4-wheeling, and his Corvette. He loved
being with his grandchildren.
Mr. Montijo was a member of
Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church.
He was preceded in death by
his grandfather, Enrique Valencia.
He is survived by his mother,
Yolanda Montijo; by his father,
Horacio Montijo; by his wife, Alice Montijo; by his son, Michael
Montijo; by his daughter Yvette
Montijo; by his brother Horacio
Enrique Montijo; by his sisters,
Carmen Montijo and Nora Ortiz;
and by his eight grandchildren.
Visitation was held at Douglass
Funeral Home on Saturday morning, December 22. Mass celebrated by Father Peter Nwachukwu
followed a rosary service at Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church that morning; burial was
in Ajo Cemetery. Pallbearers were
Michael Montijo, Enrique Montijo, Louie Ortiz, Jeff Burkhead,
Bobby Burkhead, and Benji Ortiz.
Arrangements were made by
Douglass Funeral Home.

Raymond W. Shove III, 65,
died suddenly on December 12,
2012, in Surprise.
He was born August 18, 1947,
to Veronica (Whalen) & R.W.
Shove Jr.
He enlisted in the US Army
in 1966 and served in Korea and
on patrol along the Berlin Wall in
Germany.
Mr. Shove worked at the
Cheshire Reformatory before
becoming a state trooper in Connecticut. He retired in 1994 and
relocated to Arizona.
He lived in Ajo for several
years. “He loved Ajo & the Arizona desert,” said his brother Jim
Shove. He was a life member of
VFW Post 3578 here and treasured his friendships with Ron
Taoka, Paul Vasquez, and Floyd
Lacewell.
At the time of his death he was
making his home in Buckeye.
Mr. Shove enjoyed gardening,
golf, softball, and building creative stone fireplaces and patios.
He had an interest in physical
fitness and competed in the Mr.
Arizona contest. He liked to live a
simple life, says his family.
He is survived by his companion, Debbie Torres of Buckeye; his
sons, Colby Shove of Connecticut
and Hunter Shove of Tennessee;
by his daughter, Morgan “Emmy”
Shove Patchen of New York State;
by his children’s mother, Margaret Keilty of Sharon, Connecticut; by his brothers, Fran Shove
of Memphis, Tennessee, and Jim
Shove and John Shove of Waterbury, Connecticut; by his sister,
Peggy Shove Columb of Waterbury, Connecticut; and by his five
grandchildren and several nieces
and nephews.
The family suggests memorial donations may be made to
Wounded Warrior Project, PO
Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
His body was donated to University Medical School according
to his wishes.

The Ajo Christian Academy, The River Church, and the Ajo Calvary Baptist Church teamed up
recently to donate more than 20 gift boxes for Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s
Purse Ministry that provides gifts to children in impoverished communities around the world. The
ministry is delivering about 100 million gift boxes this year. Doing their part are, in front, Larry
Ortega, Rhea Ortiz, Elle Kesler, Kate Laymon, Logan Canon; in the middle, Devin Culver, Mia
Culver, Delainey Kesler, Jillian Behare, Katrina Fuller, Wyatt Sharpe; and in back Anabel Blount,
Zamantha Robles, Giana Vega, Joshua Hood, Bryant Kesler, Esai Robles, and Amaia Moreno.

“The kids at Ajo Christian Academy were thrilled to go shopping and help provide items such
as small toys, toothbrushes, and warm socks to other children across the globe,” said ACA
teacher Jaime Kesler.

Santa’s first stop on Christmas Eve
will be in Ajo for Plaza festivities
Santa Claus is looking forward to stopping in Ajo on Christmas Eve,
according to his public relations officer, Tom D. Elf, who has made arrangements for Santa’s visit through the Ajo Rotary Club with some
help from the Ajo/Gibson Volunteer Fire Department and the Pima
County Sheriff’s Department.
People are expected to begin gathering in the Plaza about sunset on
Monday, December 24, to visit with friends and wait for Santa to appear
in the belfry of Curley School soon after it gets dark. From the school,
he will make the short trip to the Plaza in the sleigh he has kept in Ajo
for generations.
“All the reindeer are sorry they can’t come, but they’re busy getting
the real sleigh ready,” said Jim B. Elf, noting that Prancer thinks the
reindeer on the float looks just like him.
After officially starting the Plaza festivities with a magical wave of
his hand, Santa will take time to talk to children. Elf warns, however,
that Santa may not be able to fulfill last minute wishes, or any extravagant ones. “Santa has lots of children on his list, and even he can’t afford
to get children everything they want,” said Elf.
In addition to the visit with Santa, youngsters may go through the
traditional treat line where the Ajo Rotary Club and Ajo High School
student council will be passing out gifts.

Patti Summers was graduated from Chatham University,
College of Continuing and Professional Studies, on Sunday,
December 16, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a doctorate in
nursing practice, an advanced degree in addition to her nurse
practitioner degree.
The DNP is a clinical practice degree focusing on the
application of research already available. The goal is to apply
evidence-based practice to patient populations to improve the
health of the nation. The focus of her capstone (dissertation)
was the education of primary-care providers in the medications
and implementation strategies for congestive heart failure
patients.
Summers, who practiced at Desert Senita Community Health
Center for several years, will be continuing her work at the
Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Santa’s boom
may scare dogs
While the arrival of Santa
Claus in the Plaza is the source of
joy for the people gathered to welcome him, the boom that signals
his arrival is almost as terrifying
to dogs and cats as the 4th of July.
Almost every year, dogs left in
yards or kept on loose leashes bolt
in fear.
To keep the holidays from
becoming tragic, pet owners are
advised to keep their pets inside,
especially if they plan to be part
of the Plaza revels on Christmas
Eve.

Air Force through Officer
Training School at Maxwell
Air Force Base, Montgomery,
Alabama, on December 14,
2012.
Canon enlisted in the
Air Force in 2007 and was
educated as a Korean linguist
at the Defense Language
Institute in Monterey,
California.
In August 2012, she was
graduated from the University
of Utah with a degree in Asian
culture and Korean.
Canon is the daughter of Dr.
Stephen K. Canon and Jane
Canon, the mother of Logan
Canon, and the granddaughter
of the late June Coker.

fourth century bishop of Myra. who
did good deeds. Legend took over
and he has become the popular Santa

Stella Krznarich and Lupe Ownby worked meticulously on their bark paintings Wednesday,
December 19, at the library. Bark painting was a part of the program Nuestras Raices, which is
a celebration of Mexican-American authors, arts, and culture. Artists used bright colors to paint
scenes from everyday life like animals and nature on paper made from bark.
GED exam is getting tougher,
people advised to test soon
“The GED test will change in
2014. It will be much more challenging and require more computer skills and deeper knowledge of
specific subject areas,” said Bridget & Tomas Kalmar, co-directors
of the local GED program.
“If you have passed some of
the five subjects on the current
test, but not all, you are strongly
encouraged to finish before the
new test is released,” they said.
People must pass all five subjects
and receive their GED before January 2014.
If they do not, they will be required to re-take the entire GED
test in its new, more difficult form,
the Kalmars added.
After the change, GED testing
services will not recognize the
parts of the test that an individual
has already passed. Until then, testers must pass all five subjects and
receive their GED before December 31, 2013.

flu vaccine for adults between the
ages of 19 and 64 years. The vaccine is for those adults who do not
have health insurance or whose insurance does not cover the cost of
the flu vaccine.

to obtain the flu vaccine.

ISDA seeks
volunteers for
tax preparation
The IRS promotes and monitors a program providing free
income tax preparation assistance to households with incomes under $50,000, according
to Liz Yon, site coordinator for
the International Sonoran Desert
Alliance’s program. “We are still
looking for a few volunteers to
help with this program,” she said.
In Ajo, volunteers organized
by ISDA will offer free tax preparation service. “We have a good
time helping people out with their
tax forms,” Yon added. “We help
families get the tax credits they
have earned but might not figure
out without help.”
Volunteers should have good
communication skills and computer skills with attention to detail. The volunteers will attend
about ten hours of training in Ajo
during the first part of January
and then help out once or twice
a week, sometimes on Saturday
mornings, for a few hours during
the tax season.

Center for GED classes as well as offices for accounting and media. Ajo Works, located in the
small white building at 421 Taladro southeast of the Plaza, is the “go to” location to register for all
of ISDA’s programs. The Print Shop & Art Stop are now in the south building of the Plaza closest
to the Depot. The Plaza Management has a new office in the Plaza, to the right of the library.

The Ajo Community Garden Consortium and the Get Going, Get Growing garden
apprenticeship program joined forces last Saturday in the Curley School’s Orilla site to plant beds
for harvest by ACGC members. From left are Wayne Davis, Michele Ostiguy and her adventurous
son Urtzi, Sylvia Tatman-Burruss, Kathleen Stevens, and Miriam Fitts. In addition to the member
harvest, the group is working out details to donate produce to the local food pantry.
“I’m brand-new to the group but Kat gave me the encouragement and the education to get
started,” said Ostiguy. “The most important thing I learned is to just jump in. I wanted to get Urtzi
out here to get comfortable with a garden environment. Plus, I want to learn to be more selfsufficient, and at the same time gardening is good for one’s health!”
The consortium has monthly meetings open to the public, usually the first Tuesday of each
month at the public library. Meeting times are posted in the weekly library schedule in the Ajo
Copper News. Stevens may also be called at 510-325-6293 for more information.

A winter solstice garden party was held on Saturday at the Dolce garden site on McKinley for
members and friends of the Ajo Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Pulling back a frost cover are
Mara & Beatrice Branson, Linda Brice, Christine Johnson, Teri Ryan, Anna Plant, and Peter &
Nina Altshul. Others came and went throughout the morning.
Along with vegetable-share distribution, the group discussed succession planting techniques,
and holiday garden lore, and related humorous gardening anecdotes. To learn more about the

Wildlife habitat
supporters are
nearing goal
Over the last 4½ years, a dedicated group of people have been
working hard to make Ajo a Certified Wildlife Habitat Community.
The project began in August 2008,
as a community outreach program
of Organ Pipe Cactus National
Monument in cooperation with the
National Wildlife Federation (the
sponsoring organization), ISDA,
Ajo Chamber of Commerce, Ajo
Library, and others. Since last
May, the team has quietly been
about its work, including encouraging three more community gardens and Ajo Elementary School
to certify their wildlife habit gardens.
“This is a big project and we
could not do it without the help of
those who enjoy our local wildlife, enjoy gardening, and have
worked to certify their properties,” said wildlife habitat leader
Vivian Sartori. “Each property is
gardened sustainably, has a water
source for wildlife, and features
native and naturalized plants that
provide food, shelter and places
for wildlife to raise young.” Each
residential certified habitat is
worth 1 point, a commercial property, park, or community garden 3
points, and the school 5 points.
“For a community the size of
Ajo, we have achieved our required total of 100 points in wildlife habitats. Other projects, for a
total of 150 points, involve work
accomplished by the Wildlife
Habitat Team. We have only a few
more points to earn, and we will
have those by January 1. When the
community achieves certification,
we will make history. Ajo will
be the second Certified Wildlife
Habitat Community in Arizona.
The other is a planned community
in Tucson. We anticipate receiving
notification sometime in January,”
said Sartori, who may be contacted at 387-5178 for more project

historic plaques
It is mandatory but free.

Bronze plaques are being prepared for Ajo sites that appear on
the National Historic Register; the
project is in celebration of the 2012
Arizona Centennial. The three
sites in Ajo are among thirteen
historic sites or districts in Pima
County that are being recognized
by the Pima County Office of
Sustainability and Conservation.
The Ajo sites are all listed on
the National Register of Historic
Places. The train depot was built
in 1916 and listed in 2001; Curley
School was built in 1919 and listed in 2008; and the Curley gymnasium built in 1937 and listed in
2008. The are all included in the
historic townsite which was started in 1916, dedicated in 1917, and
built over a period of thirty years.

The Red Raider basketball
team won its first game of the season.
Ajo 60, San Pasqual 56
Tuesday night in Winterhaven,
CA, the Raiders broke a long losing streak with a well-played victory over the Warriors. Ajo opened
with the best 1st quarter of the season, leading 15-11. Felix Corona
was hot pouring in 8 points including a pair of 3’s. The 2nd continued as Billy Glass found he could
exploit the Warriors’ big man in
the paint, scoring 5. Charlie Tapp
had a pair of nice shots. Good offense coupled with a tight defense
that limited San Pasqual to 7 gave
Ajo a 30-18 lead at the half.
San Pasqual’s leaders came out
hot in the 3rd with 15 points between them as they narrowed the
Ajo lead to 44-35. Glass continued
to work under the basket adding 6.
Darren Rendon and Josiah Nez
dropped 3s to keep the Warriors’
zone fluid.
The 4th quarter provided a
wild finish as the Warriors guards
went all out scoring 19 points between them. (They had 50 of San
Pasqual’s 56 points.) Ajo held
off the charge as Glass scored 8
and Rendon made a pair of key
shots on excellent moves in close.
(If he would really concentrate,
Rendon could develop into an excellent small forward.) Nez playing consistently throughout the
game dropped a dagger-like 3 to
preserve the win as the Warriors’
leading scorer fouled out with a
minute left.
Glass led Ajo with 21 marking
his second consecutive excellent
game. Nez and Corona each had
13 as they, too, continue to play
well. The shooting foul disparity
was extreme as San Pasqual made
13 of 22 at the line while Ajo went
2 of 6.
With a win under their belts,
the Raiders now prepare for the
Salt River Shoot-out at the end of
the month when they will play 6
games in two days. Knowing one
can win is essential to success.
The Raiders now know they can
win.
Lady Raiders
have improved

The Lady Raiders played an
excellent 1st half against San
Pasqual, but lost the third quarter
and the game.
San Pasqual 55, Ajo 26
On the road against the
Warriors, Ajo was competitive
in the 1st quarter, trailing 8-7.
Jasmine Macias led with 4 points.
In the 2nd, the Warriors upped the
tempo as their big front line began to push the smaller Raiders
around. Still, helped by Mariah
Gilmartin’s 6 points, Ajo was only
down 18-15 at the half.
After the break, the Warrior big
three (They are led by three athletic girls, each over 6’.) broke loose,
pouring in 20 points to build a 3821 lead. San Pasqual pressed hard
and the inexperienced Raiders
couldn’t adapt. Most of the
Warrior points came on steals and
lay-ups. Ivana Arizqueta made a
beautiful move to the basket and
Lindsey Leon and Macias had the
rest of the Raiders’ scoring.
Trailing - against a clearly
stronger team - by nearly 20
points in the 4th, Coach Brad
Harvey put in his younger players so they could gain experience.
The Warrior coach responded by
returning her starters and having
them press, running up the score
with 17 more points.
Both Ajo coaches were outraged by the move. The normally
unflappable Harvey noted, “This
is BS! They clearly have an excellent team and had the game well in
hand. I’m not sure just what sort
of sportsmanship San Pasqual is
trying to teach, but this isn’t how
it’s done.”
Gilmartin’s 9 points, including a pair of 3s, led Ajo. Gilmartin
continues to fire away from beyond the arc with a low success
rate. Macias, in a good all around
effort, finished with 8, and Leon,
who has been spectacular on defense but quieter on offense this
season. had 7. The Lady Raiders
are off till January 8 when they
play Eloy in Ajo.

diver (you know who you are), to
all of our regular hardcore golfers; to Ajo’s Winter residents, and
to our hardworking volunteers
on the fairways, in the pro shop,
and kitchen, and all of the fun Ajo
locals who enjoyed meals and
holiday celebrations at the golf
course; we wish everyone in the
community good health, happiness, joy and peace this holiday
season! Despite a little nip in the air
last week, we had a good golfer
turnout, some even wearing shorts
on brisk mornings, and here are
the results from our weekly events
beginning last Monday, December
17, with the Men’s Skins game. In
that round, Tony McGarry made a
skin on hole 2; Marty McCrystal
got lucky on holes 5 and 9; and
Dick Gates made a skin on #6.
Golf is a game in which you
yell “fore,” shoot six, and write
down five. Which brings me to the
Men’s Club results last Tuesday!
Greg Burton took first place with
his score of 68; Paul Barnhart and
Bill Conley tied for second place
with their score of 70, with Barnhart prevailing on the handicap
tie-breaker. Six couples were a little chilly
but in good spirits after their
round during couples play on a
windy Wednesday. Paul Barnhart
had a good day Wednesday as
well when he and Trudy clicked
together to take first place with
a 30.2. Frank Milene and Carol
Peek shot a 31 for second place,
and Bill and Paula Doremus had a
31.8 to capture third.
In last Friday’s Pro-Am Scramble, golfers took on the front nine
and two teams tied at two-under
to place. George and Norma had
to count to the 4th playoff hole to
break the tie. In second place was
the team of Captain Greg Burton,
Bob Glowdowski, Bill Parker and
Patty Taylor. Captain Dick Gates
led his teammates Frank Milene,
Elaine Murray and Dave Martin
to a first place victory.

guests of Xi Gamma Pi chapter
of Beta Sigma Phi on Wednesday,
December 19, at the home of Patti
Bush, reports Diane Schumacher.
“Seeing Patti’s creativity and
wonderful decorating sense was
a true Christmas treat,” said Luisa Williams. Members surveyed
the home and enjoyed the many
decorative touches finding inspiration from Patti’s eclectic use of
antiques and contemporary materials.
“Although member Peggy
Cole was unable to be present,
her daughter Audrey shared Peggy’s plans with the group,” said
Schumacher.
A light supper was creatively
served by the hostess and Jeannie
Morago to the delighted guests.
The social evening included a
‘pirate’ gift exchange which led
to teasing and laughter. The exchange encouraged sisters to
share memories of Christmases in
the past and plans for the future.”

in decorating and in entertaining,”
said Nancy Richeson, a sentiment
shared by all.

A Christmas Tale
‘Twas the night before Christmas and everybody was sleeping,
Even I was worn out by the hours I’d been keeping.
I had barely dozed of when I heard the phone ring,
Santa was calling. “I’ve broken something.”
I said, “Calm down, Santa, now where are you at.”
“Just this side of Tucson, and my sleigh it stopped flat.”
I said, “Now don’t worry ‘cause I’m on my way
In a tow truck to bring you to my service bay.
In just a short time I’ll have your sleigh going.”
He said, “I’m not worried, I’ve my own way of knowing.
But how will you fix it, there’s no parts to be had?”
“I got a key to the NAPA, it belongs to my dad.”
In just a short time I figured it out,
The sleigh runners were rusty, of that there’s no doubt.
“Let me get some grease that will fix that for good,
And would you mind if I look in under the hood?
I’d like to replace that beat up old hose,
And put a new bulb in old Rudolph’s nose.”
He said, “Hurry up, now, I’ve a schedule to keep!”
I was doing my best on his tired old heap.
Well, we fired it up, and test drove up a hill,
He said, “Please lad, send Mrs. Claus the tow bill.”
I said, “No charge on this, you just keep making toys,
And give them to all the little girls and boys.
Now hurry up, Santa, there’s no need to stay.”
And with a chuckle and a wink he was off on his way.

AJO SULFUR DIOXIDE PLANNING AREA (1971
NAAQS), DECEMBER 2012.
ADEQ will hold a public hearing to receive comments
on a proposed revision to the Arizona State
Implementation Plan (SIP) for the Ajo sulfur dioxide
planning area. The purpose of the revision is to
demonstrate how the area will continue to meet the 24hour and annual sulfur dioxide national ambient air
quality standards (NAAQS) through 2025. The
demonstration will be submitted to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to revise the
SIP required by the Clean Air Act.
ADEQ is soliciting comments on the proposed revision
and will hold a public hearing on February 7, 2013, at
2:00 p.m., at the Salazar-Ajo Branch of the Pima
County Public Library, 33 Plaza Street, Ajo, Arizona
85321. All interested parties will be given an
opportunity at the public hearing to submit relevant
comments, data, and views on the proposal, orally and
in writing. Written comments may also be submitted
throughout the comment period but must be
postmarked or received at ADEQ by 5 p.m. on
February 7, 2013. Any comments received will be
responded to and forwarded to EPA with the final SIP
revision.

Statutes, you have the right to consent or withhold
