President’s Report
We had an interesting club forum at the April clubnight. Clearly club members wish
to extend the clubrooms and this matter will be taken further at the AGM in June.
Our last clubnight was very interesting with a police photographer‘s personal view of
the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake event supported with photos that the
news photographers could not get.
Our Club‘s most important rally is coming up on Queen‘s Birthday weekend being
the Double 50, please ensure you get your entry in to the Rally Secretary. Of equal
importance is attending the AGM in June. Put your nominations in for committee
positions now. Remember too the Night Rally is coming up later in June. See you
all at the Double 50.
Jeremy Brook Vice President.

The Double 50 is on our doorstep again — hope you have entered or are lending a
hand to Kathryn and Lesley to help make the weekend a successful one.
Coming events are again varied and hopefully of interest to many of you. June 10
has the motorbike run to visit the WWI fighter airplane. Our AGM is on the 13th.
Nominations are welcomed prior to the day; there are several vacant positions which
need filling. Joe and Lorraine Bruntlett are running the Night Rally on June 23 -—
make sure you‘ve got those headlights in working order and bring along a torch.
Our neighbouring branch, Rotorua, is holding their swapmeet on July 8th - why not
make up some car loads, save on petrol and support them in their efforts.
Our July Club run is being organised by Howard & Dianne Porteous and will take us
to Rotorua and a visit to the Caterpillar Experience (see below).
Our Branch is hosting this year‘s VCC National AGM in August - Greg & Gaynor
Terrill and Jan & Gordon Dearlove are the committee responsible for this event and
invite members to come along to the meeting and also to the evening function which
has an Art Deco theme with dinner and lively entertainment - registration for the
dinner in this edition of Venture.
Looking further ahead - the Ladies Rally will be held on Sunday 19 August and the
PV Rally is on Saturday 22 September.
Happy motoring - Your committee

Secretary
Our Branch AGM will be held this year at clubnight on Wednesday 13 th June. There
is only one ‗notice of motion‘ received, which is a Committee approved proposal for a
set of rewritten Branch Rules or Constitution. The Notice of Meeting and the
associated Notice of Motion were mailed separately to all current Branch members in
mid-May, together with a copy of the present constitution and also the proposed new
constitution rules. Check this proposal carefully and raise any points of concern at
the forthcoming AGM.
All Branch Officer positions are up for election, so get those nomination forms
completed and in to me. There will be no nominations from the floor allowed if the
nominee is not present at the meeting.
Following our application, Trust Waikato recently advised that they had awarded a
grant of $350.00 to the Branch to assist with some maintenance painting work, which
has now been carried out.
Minutes from the National Executive Meeting and the Management Committee
Meeting held in March are now available. Ask if you would like a copy sent to you.
The Committee decision to trial an amalgamation of the Branch Veteran and Vintage
Rally dates has been rescinded following the feedback received from members at
the recent discussion evening.
Because of a clash with the ‗Brits at the Beach‘ event at Tairua in October,
Committee has changed the date for the PV Rally from the traditional first weekend
in October to now be on Saturday 22 September. ―Brits‖ are too big to argue with
Another event which will suffer a date change is this year‘s Veteran Rally which is set
to clash with a Model ‗T‘ Club re-enactment run from Wellington to Auckland. Our
event is now to be held a week later than usual in November because of this, on
Saturday 10 November, with Horseless Carriage Club Waikato run the following day.
We now have a stock of vinyl windscreen stickers sporting the club ‗wings‘ with
Waikato in the red scroll below, rather like the water transfers of the past, but going
on the outside of the windscreen. See our Badge & Trophy Custodian for your
supply at $2 each.
Turners Auctions Classic Collectors clearout has changed from June 10th to Sunday
5th August. Check out their website www.turners.co.nz/collectors for further details.
Ajay‘s Ford V8 Parts is on the move - their new address is 149 Hollis Road, RD2,
Waihi, their phone number remains the same at 07 212 8742.

AQT UTE & Austin J40 Pedal Car
This little Austin A35 pickup and Austin J40 pedal car belongs to Kevin & Gaye
Heyward of Morrinsville. They have travelled all over the North Island to rallies and
car shows — here is some history on their car.
The A35 pickup is one of 475 pickups produced at Longbridge 1956 to 1957.
Production was stopped when the UK tax & excise department put on full car tax.
The pickup was not deemed a commercial vehicle as it did not have a tail-gate,
therefore it was classed as a coupe. All the pickups produced had a PU number
plus a chassis number, with the chassis number starting with AK5 as this was the
number for all A35 commercials (vans, countryman‗s & pickups).
PU 87 is one of 17 A35 pickups to come to NZ. Built at Longbridge on the 28th
November 1956, it was shipped to Suva, Fiji to the Suva Trading Co. Then in 1960
it came to NZ and was sold to Bradley‘s Panelbeaters & Towing in Westmere,
Auckland and used as the workshop runabout for a number of years. A few changes
were done to it by the apprentices at the time, A50 motor, gearbox and diff as well
as brake and clutch hydraulics fitted. The back mudguards were flared out to take
the wider axle, the gearbox tunnel was made bigger and room was made for the A50
motor under the bonnet.
I heard about this little pickup in 1990 and after paying a visit to Bradley‘s yard found
it under a cover in long grass out the back. It had not been going for a few years;
the motor and gearbox had been removed. After some negotiating a deal was made
and PU 87 ended up in our garage. First job was to strip it down to see what we
had. The first problem was we could not get the back wheels off, had to drop the
spring hangers to get the 15 inch A50 wheels out. So at this stage it was decided
that an A35 motor, gearbox and diff was going back into the pickup with a few
improvements. A low mileage A35 car was found that had been in an accident. All
good parts were removed from this car for PU
87. Body work was carried out and painting
done, then the motor, gearbox and diff from the
A35 car fitted. Oh, it looked wrong with those
narrow wheels in the flared mudguards. A trip
to Jolly Wide Wheels with the recommended 12
inch A35 rims to have 5 rims widened by 2
inches for the back and 1½ inches for the front
plus a spare. New 175 front and 185 rear
radials fitted and it looked great with its Toyota
British Red paint. Had it reregistered and wof‘d
and we were road legal again, no certification
back then.
Off to our first car show in Tauranga and won
best commercial, from then it was off around the
6
North Island going to car shows and
trying to find out about the A35 pickups.
As members of The Austin Flying A
Enthusiast Car Club NZ and of the Austin
A30 A35 Owners Club in England I was
able to contact the A35 Pickup registrar in
England and he was able to supply me
with all the details of the pickups that
came to NZ. So with the PU numbers
and an article in the NZ Classic Car
magazine I soon was on the track of the
17 pickups. I now have accounted for
them all and 15 are still around, Some
have been restored and some are waiting
to be restored. PU 4 was sold last year
and went over to Australia. Australia did
not import any A35 Cars or A35
Commercials, only imported A30s. The
only A35s in Australia came in with
English immigrants bringing cars with
them.
In 1996 I was offered for lots of $$$ an Austin J40 Pedal Car that had been won in a
raffle and the winner did not need it. This was a fibreglass replica of the original J40
pedal car from the 1950s & 60s made under licence in NZ by the Kiwi Pedal car
company. To transport it around to shows a roof rack was made to go on the pickup
and the J40 has been there ever since.
Gaye and I moved from
Auckland to Morrinsville in 1998.
We joined the Waikato VCC in
2000 and have enjoyed rallying
in the Waikato and around the
North Island since. We now
transport the pickup on a trailer
behind our bus.
The Pickup and pedal car reside
in our garage with the 1953
Austin AS3 A30 that we have
owned since 1987, 1957 Austin
A55 Cambridge, 1965 Austin
Healey Sprite MK111 and the
1939 Dodge D11.

Signature Class Toyota Factory Tour, Thames – May 4
Thank you Bob, what a great day out!
Being one of those lucky people that no
longer has to work anymore I grasped the
opportunity to join you and the 70 odd
members and friends for what turned out to
be a most enjoyable and informative
experience. The weather couldn‘t have
been better, warm and sunny, not much
traffic, perfect for the drive ahead.
Due to an unavoidable late start, we
decided to skip the organised run and head
for Te Aroha,
where we stopped for lunch at the Domain Gardens - a
lovely place for a picnic. Half an hour later we were on
our way again and enjoying the countryside, particularly
the seasonal changes in colour of the trees and
landscape, which with the sun were so bright and quite
dramatic. Also of interest was driving alongside several
kms of the recently opened cycle way which has been
installed where the railway track used to be. Time was
running on and we eventually caught up with the convoy
just as they were entering the factory car park.
As we drove in it soon became very obvious that this
was going to be a very well organised tour. Car parking
all set up for us, and greeters all ready to explain details
etc. Car Transporters were delivering and re-loading with great precision and once
inside the building it was all go.
We were split into groups and given a 15 minute description of the company
operation now known as Signature Cars. How it all came into being, the changes
over the years, staff members then and now
and why Toyota decided to discontinue
assembly etc., but still maintain a financial
interest.
Initially Toyota bought into the assembly plant
(approx. 40 years ago) to assemble Corolla cars
only, which were brought into NZ knocked
down. Eventually other models were introduced
and at its peak production 365 people were
The last and first Toyota cars to be
employed there. In 1998 the company decided
assembled in the Thames factory
to discontinue production purely for economic
reasons caused by the N.Z government‘s tariff
policy on imported vehicles. Over the years Campbell Industries, were albeit in a
small way, involved in the assembly of and refurbishment of several other brands i.e
8
Peugeot, Fiat Bambina, Rambler,
Datsun, Renault to name but a few.
Prior to the impending close of the plant
they put forward a proposal for Toyota
to consider a joint venture doing what
they were already doing, only in a much
bigger way. To Toyota the idea made
no sense at all, asking who would want
to buy cars that are 5 years old,
travelled 50,000ks max, and needed
refurbishment. Little did they realise
that New Zealanders were ready to buy
them by the thousands. On the other hand Campbell Industries were well aware of
the potential, took over and have never looked back since.
Unfortunately job losses were substantial, leaving only 65 staff to reorganise and run
the new operation. All Toyota (models) are
accepted and although refurbishment is
mainly cosmetic, mechanical, electrics,
brakes and suspension are all part of the
assessment process. A full time AA member
is stationed on site and certifies all vehicles at
completion. Average output per month 348;
various models, commercial, 4wd, people
movers and private cars, plus 100 Hilux
trucks.
When finished (all classes) are
distributed to various dealers, fleet operators
and rental companies for sale under the
Signature Class Badge. Fleet & Rental cars
have a two year 50,000 turnaround life before
coming for refurbishment at which time they
are replaced by Signature Class Vehicles,
thus keeping a fairly constant flow of work at
the plant. They are not in the business of
retailing themselves, therefore purchase or
private refurbishment cannot be made ex
factory.
As a point of interest the manager mentioned
that they are the only company in the world
doing this kind of work. However many enquires have been made and requests
from overseas received to have a tour of the Plant, now that its potential has been
realised.
I hope this has been of interest to our members for those who couldn‘t make it
because of work commitments etc. Do try and get a group together sometime and
visit. Parties of 15 are welcome, a cup of coffee and a biscuit are supplied – all free!.

Annual Prizegiving
Our annual prizegiving this year was well attended, with 50 members coming along
to join in the camaraderie of the evening and show their appreciation for our long
serving members.
After arriving at the clubrooms for a natter - dinner was
again nicely presented by the ladies from Cambridge
Cuisine. Between courses the long service 25 and 35
year badges were awarded. General prizegiving
followed dessert and members were presented with
the various trophies earned during the year.
The ―surprise‖ entertainment for the evening was a bit
of old fashioned fun led by ukulele maestro Noelene
Kennedy who came along with a ukulele for each of us
present. She proceeded to get a room full of thumbs and fingers into some
semblance of order to make a bit of music and have a good old sing-along. Great
fun and certainly something a bit different.

OUT OF TOWN WINNERS
Congratulations to Kevin and Gaye Heyward for their 1st placing in the Commercial
Section of the Maunga Moana Rally, with a total loss of only 40 points.
Ron Fey won the Kauri Trophy for the Overall best timed performance at the
Northland Motorcycle Rally for his efforts on his 1955 BSA A10 Golden Flash.

Motorcycles
Our last two outings were the very successful Mooloo, thanks to all
who helped and took part, and the visit to the NZ Ploughing
Championship in Cambridge. What a great turn out of old Farm
Machinery that was on display, and every one is saying it was the
best they had ever seen. The horse ploughing seems to have been
the main attraction and to cap it off a good friend of mine won the
Vintage Tractor Ploughing section.
We are now back to our bi-monthly runs and on Sunday the 10th
June we are going to see Larry Spicer‘s replica WW1 fighter aircraft at Te Kowhai.
We will have the club rooms open from 11.30 so we can have lunch together before
leaving at 1.00. If you do not have a motorbike and would like to come please do so
in your old car, all are welcome.
By the time you have read this some of us will have been to the Northland VCC
annual M/C rally in Whangarei, see opposite.
I have had a new rear tyre fitted to the BSA by Blackwood Motorcycles in Cambridge
who are one of our Mooloo Sponsors, great service and it was fitted while I waited,
better than me doing it with tyre levers !!!
Our next run will be on the 12 August and as I have not arranged a venue, if
someone has a place of interest they would like to visit please let me know.
See you all on the 10th June.
In the meantime, Safe Riding.
Mark down Sunday 19th August
for a day of fun, fashion and frippery.
We shall have a few surprises for you, but we want you to wear
your favourite vintage era clothing and bring along anything
that needs a revamp (hats, dresses, accessories etc.) - we will
have Jan from Deco on Alex on hand to give you great advice
on how to transform them.
14
Northland VCC Motorcycle Rally - 19 May
61 entrants of whom 59 made it to the start with six from Waikato Branch. The
weather in the main behaved itself and once the shower of rain soon after the start
had passed the day turned out quite nice in the end.
The run this year offered riders a choice of two routes, one of which included a 17
Km stretch of gravel road. Both routes took the riders approx 140km from the club
rooms up the Mangakahia Valley to Kaikohe, around Lake Omapere (Route A
around the top, Route B around the bottom on
shingle), up onto the highlands around Waimate
North, down to Puketona Junction, then on to
the Haruru Falls Motor Camp for a BBQ lunch.
The whole morning run was timed and became
an exercise in maintaining their nominated
average speed, many underestimating and
therefore having to take the occasional break.
This year there were not any observation
challenges for riders. The afternoon return run
back to Whangarei down SH1 included a visit to Ron Fey setting off on the run
Roger Crowden‘s Sunbeam Museum just north
of Kawakawa on the Paihia road. This has a number of mainly unrestored British
machines, military and historic artifacts and even a traction engine which Roger had
in steam for our visit.
72 enjoyed the drinks and meal at the Prizegiving in the evening. Overall winner
was Ron Fey from Route A, with David Warren (Akld) topping Route B on his Norton
International.
