THE RANGER REUNION
NEWSLETTER OF THE LOGAN HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
WEB ADDRESS— www.lacrosseloganalumni.com — WEB ADDRESS
From the President’s Desk……………..
Fellow Ranger Alumni,
I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying the warmer weather and looking forward to summer right
around the corner.
As I tried to figure out what to write in my final letter as Alumni president, I struggled to come up
with something meaningful. So I decided to do some yard work in the hopes that something would
come to me. It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky. A light breeze. The smell of cut grass and
fresh lilacs in the air as I mowed my yard. I thought about my daughter, Maddie, who was at the
Sectional Track meet in Madison, cheering on her friends Kassie Hanson, Chloe Malin and Caitlin
Barth, and many others as they represent Logan at the meet. I thought….what a great group of
kids. Making us proud both on the track and off. I got to thinking, that’s why I joined the Alumni
Association in the first place. I wanted to help these great kids continue down the road to becoming
great adults.
This year’s graduating class received over $16,000 in scholarships from the Logan Alumni Association and generous Alumni like you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Without you we couldn’t
do what we do. The thank yous from the recipients of these scholarships are starting to come in and
it is heartwarming to know that they will be put to such good use. This year’s scholarship winners
are top-notch, deserving students.
Ranger Rally is just a few short weeks away, so mark your calendars and come hang out with
us. Grab a bite to eat, a cold drink, good music, and most of all, help us raise money for next year’s
graduates. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, so come help us make dreams come true for
some truly great kids.
I would like to thank Dixie Fladhammer, Dave Bartlett and Ralph Tolokken for serving on the Board
of Directors. They will be leaving the Board at the end of July. We greatly appreciate the time and
dedication they put into the Alumni Association.
Thank you for allowing me to be your President for the past year. It has been an honor to serve on
the Alumni Association with such dedicated supporters of Logan students.
Sincerely,
Karen Wozney, Class of ‘84

We are so excited as we prepare for this year’s 11th Annual Logan Alumni Association Ranger Rally!
New this year is a 100-mile motorcycle ride on Friday evening, July 12th beginning at Logan High School, making one stop and
ending at Sam’s Bar. Cost for the ride is $25.00 per person. Please contact Art Lyons at [email protected],
Facebook.com/artsbarbershop or phone 608-526-4002 to sign up. Info and sign-up form available on our website also:
www.lacrosseloganalumni.com
We kick off the day of Rally with a golf outing at Forest Hills Golf Course. Tee times for this 4 person semi-competitive
scramble begin at 9:00 am, which includes a beverage ticket for the Logan Ranger Rally.
The Logan Ranger Rally begins at 4:00 pm at the Southside Oktoberfest grounds. All you need is a button for admittance
which can be purchased in advance at some local businesses for $4.00 or at the gate the day of the rally for $5.00. We are
proud to bring you this year’s entertainment—Abbey Lane and The Backbone!!
Beverages will be available for purchase from 4:00 pm until 9:30 pm and food is also available until sold out. The Sweet
Shop will once again be on site selling sundaes.
Other items available will be Logan Ranger clothing, Wisconsin Lottery pull tabs, tip boards, Alumni memberships, and of
course, raffle tickets for the major prizes, plus many other prizes as well. The drawing will be held at 9:00 pm. This year’s
top prize is $10,000 CASH!! Watch for your invitation and raffle tickets in the mail soon, or at the Rally. We would like to
thank all of our prize contributors and invite you to contact us if you would like to contribute. We now have a Facebook
page—Logan Ranger Rally—or you can visit our website at www.lacrosseloganalumni.com.
As the major fundraising event for the Logan Alumni Association Scholarship fund, we are always looking for ways to improve the Rally. We are also looking for persons interested in serving on the Alumni Board of Directors. We will be having
several vacancies starting in July and each term is three years. If you or someone you know is interested in serving or helping, please contact any of the current board members. If you join the association as a paid member (annual fee is $20.00)
you are also invited to attend our monthly board meeting and you have a voice in how we operate. Please consider joining
the association in the next year. Every dollar we raise goes towards the future of Logan High School and its students. At this
year’s convocation we granted $16,000 to 14 graduating seniors!
!! SEE YOU AT THE RALLY !!

A BIT OF HISTORY……….
In the Fall 2012 edition of this newsletter we published two excerpts from the first Logan Alumni newsletter—one
from the principal, D. E. Field, and one from the Logan Alumni President, Ken Jacobson. We scoured that first
newsletter but couldn’t find a year for this publication and asked for help in finding the year it was published.
Well, someone came forward and here is her story……..
It was very heartwarming to read the past December 2012 Alumni newsletter. In your article
THIS & THAT, there was a letter written by my father, Kenneth Jacobson. He was always so
proud of Logan, active in sports, music and many other activities. He owned Jacobson’s One
Stop Station across from the Sweet Shoppe on Caledonia Street. Since he was Class President I remember him and my Mom (she also graduated from Logan—Lucille Colburn 1935)
planning the class reunions of 1935 & 36 through the years. I think their last one was a 55year reunion. Until he passed away at the age of 88 Logan was always near and dear to his
heart. Which brings me to the reason for this e-mail. Dad graduated in 1935, so if it was the
5th annual dance it would have been 1940 or possibly 1941 for the publication of the first
newsletter since at that time they had 2 graduations a year. Hope this info helps.
Thank you to you and the Alumni committee for all the work that you do to keep this association moving forward. Doing a lot of community and volunteer work myself I know how
time consuming it can be but I also know how rewarding. Many of us who have moved
away appreciate the connection to our roots and all the work you take on to keep this moving
forward. I moved away in the early 70’s but do get back to La Crosse often to visit family
and friends. Timing has never been around any of the Ranger Rally events. Keep up the
good work!

RANGER BEGINNINGS
Logan’s mascot, the Ranger, was selected in 1942. It was submitted by Raymond
Nibbe’s homeroom during a contest that was held to find a nickname for the
school’s athletic teams. The name was drawn from a small group of American
fighting men who fought on the side of the British in the French and Indian War of
1759. Colonel Major William Rogers was authorized to recruit and train a unit
that would use unconventional methods of warfare. Dressed in buckskin, Rogers’
Rangers became a symbol of unity and fighting prowess. They were the forerunners of every specialized fighting prowess. They were the forerunners of every
specialized fighting force, and the name “Rangers” is still used in the military.
Rogers’ Rangers are featured in the movie, “Northwest Passage,” with Spencer
Tracy portraying William Rogers.
From the editor: And many thanks to artist Don G. Thompson, a 1958 Logan
graduate who passed away in 2011, for putting a face on our beloved mascot, the
Logan Ranger

The Alumni Board is pleased to report its annual results on its Perpetual Scholarship Fund . The fund is managed by Trust Point
(formerly North Central Trust). The funds are invested in a diversified portfolio of securities. Financially, the Association has had
a good year so far. The Ranger Rally has clearly been revived as illustrated with last year’s success. Donations, memorials, and
contributions continue to be an excellent source of revenue, and because our organization is completely voluntary, expenses continue to remain very low. Operating expenses are a mere $3,933 for the year. Operating income for the trailing 12 months was
$18,150, and investments have done very well so far year over year with an increase in value of $54,431. This adds up to net income of $72,581. This has helped bring our balance in the perpetual scholarship fund up to $419,429. From this amount, we are
proud that we are scheduled to pay $16,750 in scholarships for the 2013-14 school year. Due to the commitment, and competent
management of the board, its members, and those who contribute their energies to our cause, we are becoming an organization that
is having an increasingly positive impact on the futures of our youth
We are proud of the fact that we are and will continue to play a part in the academic advancement of our
next generation whom we believe will enhance our future society.
Because of the increasing cost of post-high school education, one of the most important goals of the Logan
Alumni Association is to support the continued education of Logan students. Thank you for all the support
for this endeavor from the alumni, friends, and Logan family.
