Dear Participants in the Under-19 National Championships

First, let me welcome all the players, coaches, managers, family and fans to
New York and to the USA Cricket Under-19 National Championships. I know
that a great deal of hard work has gone into the training and preparation that
has brought each of you here for this critical tournament in the USA Cricket
calendar. One team is going to come away with the bragging rights as the
newly crowned national champions. To whichever team wins - congratulations
in advance for being champions. However, let me congratulate every player in
attendance and crown each of you as champions. Just to get here is a
tremendous accomplishment and it means that you are one of the finest
players in your club, league and region. Furthermore, it also means that you
are one of the finest young cricket players in the USA. We are proud of you
and for all the hard work - we hope it pays off well for you.
Of equal importance to your team's win and loss record during this
tournament is the personal opportunity each of you have this week to be
scouted by USACA selectors for our Under-19 National Team. A team of three
Selectors, a Head Coach and Team Manager are all here this week in New
York to observe all the players in this tournament in order to select the 15
young men that will represent the USA over the next several months. The
Under-19 National Team will be picked from this tournament and the team
will travel to Canada in July to start qualifying the United States for the 2010
Under-19 Cricket World Cup next February in Kenya.
Therefore, I encourage all players to come ready each day and play the match
of your lives in order to grab the attention of the USACA selection committee
and prove yourself worthy of being on our National Team.

members of the New York Cricket Region will do all that is possible to ensure
that this tournament is conducted at the highest standards possible, and that
your time in New York is an enjoyable one.

This is a special opportunity for youth cricket officials to meet and discuss
matters that affect all youth programs. I look forward to personally meeting
all of you during the course of events.
We expect to have large crowds at the tournament and I believe that the
spectators will be treated to some exciting cricket. This is the first time that
New York is hosting a national youth tournament and I would like to thank
the United States of America Cricket Association for affording us the
opportunity to do so. I would also like to thank Mr. Clifford S. Hinds for his
vision and commitment not only for bringing the idea to my attention to bid
on this tournament, but also for putting together a comprehensive
proposal, without him this tournament would not take place in New York at
this time. I would also like to thank Mr. John Aaron for working very hard and
making sure that this souvenir journal became a reality.

Mr. Julius Spiegel and his very supportive staff at the New York City

we are not blessed with the best of cricket facilities, we will do our best to

age group, and the future of cricket in this country rests precariously on
their batting, bowling and fielding skills. This is the first time a national
youth tournament is being held in New York, so our supporters have never
seen their team play in a national tournament.
The untiring efforts of Mr. John Aaron is directly responsible for the creation
and publication of this souvenir journal. His dedication, commitment and
efficiency motivated me to give of my best, especially during those times
when things were not going so well and my frustration level rose. I also
appreciate Mr. Selwyn Caesar providing strategic assistance and even
allowing me to “read his notes on several occasions.”

The Road to Kenya 2010
Getting ready for the 2010 Youth Cricket World Cup!
The ICC Associates’ path to the Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2010 in
Kenya starts here for the USA.
The ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup is made up of 16 teams,
10 Full Members, Kenya as host and 5 Regional qualifiers. The five Regions of
the ICC are Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and East Asia Pacific. Each will host
a Regional tournament for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
The top two teams from each Region’s tournament will then go onto the
global ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier.
The top five teams from the regional tournament will then go into the
ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2010 in Kenya.

BRIEF HISTORY
OF USA CRICKET
A complete history of cricket in USA would require a
detailed analysis and extensive research in order to
accurately identify and provide information regarding
the start of the game in USA. Some reports indicate
that cricket was started in the American Colonies
sometime around 1737 and teams were comprised of
officers of the British Army and persons who migrated
from England as planters and Barons.
Cricket continued to be played until the American
Revolution (1775-1783) which involved 13 British
Colonies in North America and their parent country,
Great Britain. The American Revolution created some
friction with all things British and at the end of the
Revolution; cricket which was starting to thrive in
certain parts of USA was literally abandoned.
Cricket was partially revived after the American
Revolution and the annual Canada vs. USA cricket
match which was played in 1840 attracted a crowd of
10,000 spectators. The game of cricket declined in
USA during the 20th century, since in the late 1800s
it remained an amateur elite sport while England and
Australia were developing professional systems that
allowed compensation to players who participated on
a full-time basis.
An Englishman W.P. Pickering initiated discussions for
the visit of an English cricket team to USA in 1856;
however, financial problems postponed the tour for
three years. Mr. Pickering who was captain of the
cricket team at Eaton College (England) in 1837 and
1838 immigrated to Canada in 1852 and played for
Canada against USA the following year. Plans were
finalized for the English cricket team to tour North
America in 1859, the first ever overseas tour by an
English team.
The English team required a guarantee payment of
£750 for the tour and Mr. Pickering secured the
amount through the Montreal Cricket Club. The
English team comprised six members from the AllEngland XI and six members from the United AllEngland XI with Fred Lillywhite as scorer. The twelve
players included George Parr as captain and were
effectively the best players from the professional
ranks during of the 1859 English cricket season which
had just ended.
The English team played five matches and there were
excellent crowds for the first three matches until the
weather (in mid-October) turned very cold and
attendance at the last two matches was reduced.
The general growth of cricket in USA after the
pioneering tour by the English team in 1859 was
stymied due to the US Civil War which started in 1861,
only 18 months after the tour was completed. The
enthusiasm for cricket faded during the war and troops
from both sides adopted the embryonic game of baseball, and when English teams resumed tours to USA in
1868, the task to rekindle the enthusiasm in cricket
was great while baseball became a serious rival.
International cricket tours to USA established the game
as a popular sport in Philadelphia and several English
and Australian cricket teams visited the city to play
matches and during 1884, a team from Philadelphia
visited England to play a series of matches. Cricket
was/is played by students attending universities and
colleges, primarily by students from cricket playing
countries. USA was admitted as an Associate Member
of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1965 and
participated in the first ICC Trophy Tournament in
1979.
Governance
USACA is governed by a board of directors consisting of
a President, 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, an Executive
Secretary and a Treasurer, along with a Regional
Representative from each of the cricket regions in the
USA, who all sit on the board of USACA as directors.
The Regional Representatives serve as liaisons
between their regions and the national Board of
Directors, helping to ensure policy execution and serving as a conduit for all national development initiatives
and tournaments.
Each USACA region is managed by a Regional
Administration comprising that region’s League
Presidents and four Members-at-Large. The administration which is headed by an elected Regional Director,
Secretary and Treasurer, also includes a Youth Cricket
Coordinator and a Women’s Cricket Coordinator.

TEENAGERS AND ACCIDENTS
Car crashes are the number one killer of teenagers.
More than 5,000 teenagers lose their lives in car
accidents every year. Approximately 1,134 are killed
between 4:00 am and noon, 1,619 are killed from
noon to 8:00 pm and 2,340 are killed from 4:00 pm
to 4:00 am.
The major distractions while driving a motor vehicle
are tinkering with the radio or CD, girls putting on
make up make up, eating and cell phones use.
Using a cell phones increases the risk of an accident
by 300%. In today’s high tech world of tweeting and
texting, the risk keeps multiplying. Studies have also
found that the fewer the passengers the less
chances of an accident.
Other causes are immaturity and inexperience,
speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or
drugs, failure to use a seat belt and sleep
deprivation. More than half the teenagers killed in
car accidents each year were not wearing seat belts.
It is also true that the crash rate for 16 year olds is
twice that for 19 year olds.
Despite the need for drivers education, only twenty
percent of high schools now offer that course. Well,
what can parents and students do to lessen the
problem. First of all they should limit the amount of

their young drivers wear seat belts at al times and
ban the use of cell phones, even with a headset.
Finally, parents can restrict how many of their friends
are in the car with their child.

league tournaments in the regions across USA. The
regions also organize inter-league tournaments which
are utilized primarily as the basis to identify players for
selection to represent their respective regions in the
annual national tournament, as well as for selection to
the national squads.
Regions also organize Under-19 competitions based on
geographic areas and the Under-19 players play as
combined teams in the respective league competitions.
The annual national tournament is played at the Under15, Under-19 and senior levels with a Final Four Super
League played at both the Under-19 and senior levels.
International Competition
The USA, after its admission as an Associate Member
of ICC participated in ICC Trophy Tournaments and ICC
Americas Region Tournaments following the formation
of the Americas Region which was charged with
development of cricket in the Americas. The USA also
participated in the ICC Six Nations Tournaments in the
UAE in 2004 and the ICC Champions Trophy in England.
Development Program
A national development program was established
during 2005/2006 and the program was temporarily
suspended due to some internal and governance
issues, and the suspension of USA by ICC. In the
interim, coaching programs were conducted by the
respective regions for youth players, and at the various
cricket academies that have been established and are
catering to the various age groups up to the Under-19
level.
A national Five-Year Development Program is currently
in place and covers several initiatives involving all of
the regions and approved by the ICC Americas
Development Office. The program is funded in part by
the ICC and the solicitation of national sponsors and
fund-raising events.
An annual youth tournament is played in California and
the tournament involves players at the Under-11,
Under-13 and Under-15 levels and registration is open
to teams from member clubs, leagues or regions who
are encouraged to field eligible players.
The Ed Ahmad NY Caribbean Cup which replaced the
former WICB Red Strip Bowl tournament is played
among teams in the New York metropolitan area and
includes past and current players from the Caribbean
and South East Asia who have played at the regional
and international levels. USACA in an effort to ensure
that current and future players at the national level are
playing with and among caliber players, entered a
Developmental XI team in the tournament, in the
recent past. The New York Public Schools Athletic
League (PSAL) introduced cricket into the high schools
for the first time in 2008, with the assistance of USACA
and that program is now in its second year with 23
high schools actively participating.
Women’s Cricket Integration
Women’s cricket is now in its primary stages in USA.
A program to recruit and train women for a two-team
tournament in the NY metropolitan area was started in
2005/06 and was later abandoned due to the lack of
sufficient players and adequate funding. Currently
there is a significant drive to establish women’s cricket
initiatives across the USA, and recently a Regional
Conference tournament was held in Florida, with the
Eastern Conference XI emerging as the 2009
champions. That tournament served as the platform for
the selection of an American Women’s XI to compete in
the 2009 ICC-Americas Women’s Tournament in
Lauderhill, Florida. There are plans to establish a
women’s league between the New York and Atlantic
regions in 2009.
Branding Identity
USACA recently release a brand new logo that identifies
the national association for cricket in the USA with
elements of the game and Americana. The national
bird - the bald eagle is prominently displayed in flight
across a cricket ball, while there are stars representing
each cricket region in the country. The colors rendered
are those of the American flag - red, white and blue.
Other Information
The ICC partnership with UNAIDS and UNICEF was
supported with a visit to the New York and South East
regions by Mr. Michael Holding, who visited three
schools in New York City (NYC) during normal school
hours and conducted a rally and spoke to students
about cricket and the United Nations program.
This year USACA hired its first Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Don Lockerbie and established an office in Miami
Beach, Florida.

TIPS ON FIELDING
SLOW BOWLERS
a) To be a good fielder you must practice hard and often.
Again accuracy is of paramount importance. Practice to bowl
a ball on a particular spot of good length and accuracy.
Before you bowl you would have had a chance to see how the
batsmen are batting, how the pitch is playing and which
boundary is closest. Notice how the batsman holds the bat
and how he uses his feet. Does he have an open or closed
stance?. What guard did he take? Is he stronger on the leg
side or off side? When you bowl the ball outside the off stump
does he want to play it?
b) After each ball is bowled you should look at the captain
in case he wants to move you without drawing the attention of
the batsmen.
c) Fielders, especially at cover point, extra cover, mid-wicket
and square leg should be mobile and quickly off the mark
They should walk in every time a ball is being bowled and
immediately react to the batsman’s stroke.
d) Fielders close to the wicket should practice throwing the
ball underhand to the wicket keeper or bowler.
e) To improve your chance for a run out, throw the ball
a. To where the slower runner is running
b. To the end the striker is running to
c. Look for the “blind” runner, the one who turns for another
run without looking at the ball.
d. If you hear one batsman say “no” or “wait”, throw to the
opposite end.
f) If you are fielding on the boundary, never let the ball fall
between you and the boundary.
TIPS ON BOWLING
All bowlers should practice accuracy, length and line. He
should develop a “stock” ball. A stock ball is your best ball,
the one you have most confidence in bowling - and the one
you have been most successful with. It could be the yorker,
slower ball, the googly, etc.
FAST/MEDIUM FAST BOWLERS
These bowlers are the initiators of the bowling attack and are
the first impression that the batting team will have of the
fielding team. These bowlers must be aggressive and accurate and should force the batsman to play at every ball. They
must quickly find their line and length and create pressure
on the batsman that will lead to taking wickets. Test the
courage of the batsman every now and again with a short rising ball. After a short rising ball you may want to bowl a yorker
or a slower ball, as a change up, but it should be dead on the
wicket.
If the batsman is a back foot player, pitch the ball further up
to him. Your job is to use pace, length and accuracy to pierce
the batsman’s defense. Pay attention to your body position at
moment of delivery, how you hold the ball and your follow
through.
Maintain a good length and see how far you can make the
batsman play away from his body. If you are trying to save
runs and he doesn’t play the balls outside his off stump, keep
bowling it there. Always try to bring the batsman forward to let
him drive at the ball. Try to block his favorite shots and get
him to hit across the line of flight. Develop signals with the
wicketkeeper, (faster ball) and seek his advice. Above all,
always seek the advice of your coach and senior players.
BATTING
Every batsman should prepare himself mentally before going
to bat.
• Observe the field placing and fielders.
• Good fielders – left handed fielders – good throwers
• Observe the bowlers: Look for signals between him and the
wicketkeeper.
• Does he change his action to bowl a faster one or an off
break.
• How much bounce is the bowler getting.
• Does both ends of the pitch play the same way.
WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE CREASE
• Set targets - increase targets as you go along
• Look where the fielders and wicketkeeper are. The setting
of the field will indicate where the bowler is hoping the ball
will go.
• Where the wicketkeeper is standing will indicate the speed
of the bowler.
• Rotate the bowling
• Discuss batting strategy with your partner.
• Find ways to outsmart the bowler
• Attack from your strength, defend where you are weak
• Take note where the best fielders are fielding
WHEN YOUR PARTNER IS OUT:
• Look after the new batsman until he settles down
• Maintain the scoring
OPENING BATSMEN
• Your main job is to give the team a good start and to see
off the opening bowlers
• Look for singles and maintain scoring
• Balance the need to protect your wicket with the need for
scoring

ABOUT THE NEW YORK JUNIOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The New York JYDP has its genesis in a
conversation held in the summer of 1999 between
Krish Prasad, Gary Nascimento and Clifford Hinds.
As a result of that discourse, a cricket game
between Metropolitan Cricket League and Eastern
American Cricket Association youth teams was
arranged and played at Lido Beach in Long Island.
When Mr. Hinds became the regional Director for
New York, the program was formalized and a
5-Year Strategic Plan was unveiled. Throughout
the years, the program has grown to where there
are now eight New York teams who compete in an
annual competition. Traditionally, the Atlantic
Region and Northeast Region teams have always
been invited to compete.
The mission of the JYDP is to promote the game
of cricket at the junior, youth and Under-23 levels,
to develop teams and cricketers that will compete
successfully at the national and international levels
and to use the game to instill positive values in the
cricketers so that they will become outstanding
citizens.
The youth program has produced players such as
William Perkins, Trinidad and Tobago and West
Indies One-Day representative, USA 2006 World
Cup representatives, Alex Kirton, Akeem Dodson,
Hemant Poonoo, Dominic Audin and Sumon Bari.
Our current youth captain, Gregory Sewdial is a
member of the US Senior team as is Akeem
Dodson. Because USA did not compete in the
2008 Americas Youth Cup, players like Francis
Mendonca, Basdeo Ramnarain, Andy Mohamed,
Dwayne Smith and Nicholas Sanford were denied
the opportunity to represent the USA. In the five
years of the national competition, New York has
won three times and finished second twice.

In additional to developing cricket skills the
program uses the Australian Women’s cricket
fitness and conditioning program which
emphasizes aerobic endurance, strength, power,
flexibility, core stability and agility. Discipline is
strictly enforced through the Code of Conduct and
players must follow the dress code. Motivational
speakers are used to prepare the players mentally
for competition.
The foundation of the program is the New York
Tri-state Cricket Academy which was founded by
Linden Fraser and Keith Perkins in 2003 and which
provides year-round coaching for young cricketers
from the New York tri-state geographic area...
As with any organization, the road to success is
paved with many challenges. Foremost among
them are, lack of meaningful sponsorship, lack of
support from parents and politicians, unavailability
of grounds, lack of a proper data base, and a lack
of commitment from players and the cricket
community.
On the positive side, the program is rated as the
best in the USA and is blessed with some hard

pace. We competed in the first National tournament
held in Chicago last year, where the team finished
