Prince Henrik’s 80th Birthday
The 2013 ‘Greenlandic stamp of the
year’ has been chosen
By Hjørdis Viberg
The winning 2013 Greenlandic stamp of the year was
the stamp with the attractive polar bear, titled “Vulnerable Animals”.
Stamp collectors from all over the world voted for
their favorite among the 24 stamps issued by TELEPOST in 2013.
Naja Abelsen is the artist who has created the chosen stamp and has previously been responsible for
no less than 16 stamps issued by TELE-POST. The
stamp “Vulnerable Animals” was issued on 11th June
2013. It was a joint stamp issue with the Israeli Post
and the aim of the issue was to create awareness
about vulnerable animals.
The stamp is enhanced with the technology called
‘Augmented Reality’. This means that you can see a
short video of a live polar bear if you download the
“Sepac App” and install it on your tablet or smartphone and scan the stamp.
The winner of the DKK 10,000 monetary prize chosen
in the draw was Philippe Kocielkowski from SaintGeorge-sur-Meuse in Belgium and TELE-POST sends
him their congratulations.
The ten lucky runner-up winners all receive a 2013
year pack and are: Esa Kallio in Sweden, Gert Kragh
Andreasen, Camilla Nissen Toftdal, Jørgen Rasmussen
and Jørgen Vesth-Hansen in Denmark, Bezazel Ferhat
in Algeria, Pastorimi Massimo and Francesco Magnani in Italy, Tor Nygaard in Norway and last but not
least Uda Yanuhardi in Indonesia.
Stamp of the year, Vulnerable species by Naja Abelsen.
The competition for the ”2013 Greenlandic stamp
of the year” ran from 1st December 2013 to the 1st
March 2014. The competition was held through POST
Greenland’s magazine Greenland Collector, on www.
stamps.gl and on www.facebook.com/stamps.gl.

Contemporary Greenlandic Art
– Part 8 – New Talents
By Jacob Lunddahl Pedersen
We have now reached the eighth and final part of
POST Greenland’s popular stamp series about contemporary Greenlandic art.

Contemporary Art VIII 1/3
Value: DKK 3.00
Date of issue: 11th June 2014
20 stamps per sheet
Exterior dimensions: 43.50 x 50.00 mm
Format: E - Vertical
Artist: Sissi Møller
Typography: Lowe-Martin Group
Printing Method: Offset
Paper: TR4
This time, interesting and beautiful paintings of Sissi
Møller, Lisa Kreutzmann and Isak Brandt respectively
are reproduced.
As with the previous seven parts in the art series, the
stamps will be issued in normal sheets – and also in a
souvenir folder. The souvenir folder (or stamp booklet which it rightfully should be called) contains one
of each of the mint stamps. In addition, the stamp
booklet outlines the individual artists’ other work,
presented in pictures and text.
We hope that you will enjoy this presentation of the
eighth part of POST Greenland’s stamp series about
contemporary Greenlandic art.
Sissi Møller (Born 1984) grew up in Nuuk, Greenland:
She was educated at Nuuk Art School and Copenhagen Art School and has earlier exhibited in Greenland,
Katuaq Culture House. In Finland, Sissi participated in
an exhibition through Napa Nordic Institute’s culture
project ”Art from the Edge of the Ice”. In Denmark
Sissi has participated in a variety of different group
exhibitions and the ‘Effector’ festival in Copenhagen.
Also in solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in the
Gallery Dencker&Schneider and, latest, in Gallery
Dencker&Schneider in Berlin, Germany in April 2014.
Sissi’s work spans wide from acrylic on canvas, collage, photography, body and sculptures.
The work is about exploring and creating certain perceptions of the expression through planes and depth,
both in time and in space.
As I have worked much with portraits as a way of
conveying moods and a state of mind, a portrait
seemed natural for me as a design for a stamp.
4 | Greenland Collector
I have worked with the transparancy of the portrait
as it gives an openess and spaciousness especially
for a stamp.
Depth, light, darkness and contrast were interesting
to work with in connection with the depiction of this
portrait - for example, a set of eyes are never the
same. Always more expressions emerge from a face
and thus the portrait is full of different moods.
Faces have always inspired me, a face is extremely
‘showing and exposed’ and, at the same time, it can
be tight and hard- but always honest.
To make a portrait is like solving a puzzle, you break
it up and put it back together again and it is about
getting all the surfaces and depths of the mood into
the painting. It is a process, where the method will
never be the same twice. The portrait for this stamp
is very dear and personal to me as it is my late father
that I have chosen to portray.

Lisa Kreutzmann, was born 1981 in Kangaatsiaq:

she is still developing her skills.

She has always received support from her family,
friends and people from her town for which she is
very grateful.
Her life as an artist today makes her very happy as
she is always on the go, when new work presents
itself.
The drawing on the stamp is a fantasy that depicts a
snow hut, viewed from above, with the inhabitants
and their visitors. In the drawing I have used different materials collected on the beach. We live near
the beach in Kangaatsiaq and, therefore, liked to
play on the beach. Between the rolling stones on the
beach we always found many other things amongst
the many coloured shards ”cut” by the waves.

Format: E - Horizontal
Artist: Isak Brandt

With the old Greenlandic hut in my thoughts, I have
placed the shards so they depict a snow hut. Here
lives a man and a woman cut in wood. Their visitor is
the ”sun”, which is a sea urchin without spines and
the ”animals” are small bivalve shells (unfortunately
I have forgotten their names). They are all inside and
enjoy themselves telling stories.
Isak Brandt was born in Aasiaat in 1990:
Like so many other artists I grew up with art and
have drawn since as long as I can remember. Since
my childhood and up through my youth, my interest
for art has steadily grown to become my great passion today.
In 2005 I went to art summer school in Denmark
where we worked with different art forms. So I then
went to art school in Nuuk between 2008 - 2010 and
have since made exhibitions in different places such
as: Katuaq in Nuuk, the art museums in Nuuk and Ilulissat, Aasiaat Museum and the Greenlandic houses
in Denmark. I mostly do paintings but also try my
hand at other things too.
It is my great passion to mix reality and fantasy. I
mostly like to paint in acrylic but by trying new techniques, I am now able to work with new things such
as digital art.
This technique is currently my favourite working
method, but I also continue
to paint in acrylics. Mostly I
do not know what my work
expresses, as the work tells
its own story and the individual can make up his own
unlimited stories.
11062014A
With regard to describing my work with the stamp, I
cannot say that I have any deeper ideas behind the
painting image, as I merely want to express independence and individuality. One can understand it as
‘growing spiritually as a wandering spirit’ but, again,
I find it important that the individual puts what he
sees into words himself.

The Winter Feeding and Sheep Mustering
in Greenlandic Agriculture
By Kenneth Høegh
Winter Feeding and Sheep Mustering
Winter is long in the fiord landscapes and mountains
in Southern Greenland where ice and snow covers
the landscape during a large part of the year. During winter it is difficult for the animals to reach the
natural forage, and it is needed to feed the livestock
through the winter.
Until the 1970s, the sheep farms of Greenland were
primarily based on a very extensive form of farming,
with modest amounts of winter fodder and with the
sheep grazing the pastures in the mountains as much
as possible. This was probably close to the Norse
Greenlandic method of sheep and goat farming during the Middle Ages, although the Norsemen probably had much smaller herds than is the case today.
6 | Greenland Collector
In the mountains the animals could find nutritious
willow bushes and heath plants, dry grass and also
seaweed which the sheep could forage at the rocky
beaches. The sheep came home at night to sleep in
small sheds, where they were given a little extra
feed. Many sheep farmers had sheds which were
made of decommissioned building materials from
the American bases in Greenland. However, there
were also farms where the animals stayed on the
11062014
mountain pastures all year without receiving extra
feeding, though this was a cheap mode of operation, it also meant catastrophic losses of
animals during severe winters .
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, there
were some particularly harsh winters with

severe weather and late
springs, with losses of
up to 60% of the ewes
and 80% of the lambs.
Particularly the spring of
1967 and 1976 had heavy
losses which then led to
many farmers leaving the
industry and the profession seemed to be a dying
industry.
New development initiatives were started in
the late 1970s, with the
agricultural advisor Mr Kaj Egede (1951-2013) as the
initiator together with the Greenland Sheep Farmer
Association (SPS) and Icelandic experts. The industry
was intensified and regulated, including the introduction of bylaws on feeding and proper care of the animals. Greenland also managed (until leaving the EU
in 1985) to obtain development funds for agricultural
development from the EU regional funds and, since
then, the Greenland Home-rule Government has
funded a number of development initiatives. This led
to the building of proper sheep sheds, construction
of tractor roads and new farms and organised the
purchase of necessary winter feed from Europe and
the cultivation of new grass fields from the 1980s
through the 90s and 00s right up to recent years.

pastures. The sheep are gathered by the farmers during autumn, where vast mountain areas are inspected - on foot, on horseback or ATV’s. In areas where
there is only one farm, the local sheep farmer alone
must arrange the mustering and often calls in extra
staff from towns and settlements.
From September to November the sheep are gathered several times, mainly to round up for selecting
animals for slaughter, with a final gathering around
November from when onwards the animals are fed
in the sheds. Throughout winter the remaining sheep
are gathered, especially when there are good snowmobile conditions the farmers will try to reach the
more remote areas.
About the artist
Aka Høegh was born in Qullisaat on Disko Island in
1947. For a number of years, she has taken up a significant position in the world of Greenlandic art. Long
before her stamp-debut in 1986, her art had attracted
well-deserved attention far beyond Greenland’s borders. Readers of this magazine will perhaps also remember her encouragement to creative cooperation
and display, among other things through the project
“Stone and Man” in Qaqortoq, mentioned in Greenland Collector no. 1, feb. 2002.
Aka Høegh is mainly self-taught, and has from time
to time taken up guest studies on the Copenhagen
Art Academy. Her artistic displays are many in the
areas of painting, stone sculpturing, wood carving,
mosaics, graphics etc. Her pictures often have a
dreamy expresion, expressed through floating brushstrokes of movement and flows.
Aka’s art is influenced by nature and the
Greenlandic myths and legends. Furthermore, man is the centre of her numerous
works.
She finds inspiration in man and in man’s
life spirit and experiences. She is encouraged by the beauty in social meeting and
the mere presence of man, and no less in
the inner voice of the soul. “All we see has a
spirit”, is a well known quote of Aka.
Her works are never political, but the life of
the common man, as well as those badly
off, encourage her to artistic display. As such
the social heart beat of Greenland is expressed through the art of Aka Høegh. Aka
has received various awards, for instance
she is a Danish knight.
Today sheep farming is much more intensive and
systematic than in the past, with good and efficient
feeding and breeding efforts of the 20000 ewes - but
with a stable production, even after harsh winters.
The animals are fed home-grown silage and some
imported concentrate feeds are also used.
The cultivated area is almost ten times bigger than
during the 1970s - primarily fields with grass - and
most farms have equipment for the production of
round bales which has made the harvest less weather-dependent, so the grass can be collected even
with a high content of water during rainy periods.
Thus, large amounts of plastic wrapped silage bales
can be seen next to the sheds on sheep farms, with
the bales looking like small icebergs on land.
Sheep Mustering
The sheep are grazing freely in the mountain from
May to October, in remote areas far from the farms
- and the animals live from the abundant mountain

2013
On the same date two new stamps in the series about the history of Greenlandic mining were
issued, once more with beautiful designs created by Ina Rosing. This is the fourth issue of the
series and, as in the preceding years, the mining-stamps are exclusively issued as self-adhesive
stamps.
This year’s two stamps in the EUROPA-series were issued under the theme “Contemporary Postal
Vehicles” and the cartoonist Christian Fleischer Rex has designed the stamp images.
The issue on 14th January was completed with three stamps in the series ”Contemporary Greenlandic Art”. Isle Hessner, Niels “Mo” Motzfeldt and Kristian Olsen aaju are the artists who have
created the three stamp designs.
For the first time we issued a stamp in collaboration with the Israeli post service. “Vulnerable
species” being the joint theme for the issue. The stamp design was a creative collaboration
between the two post services.
The exciting series about modern Greenlandic agriculture offered two new designs from the
beautiful and lush southern Greenland.

This year’s SEPAC-stamp from POST Greenland featured a photo taken by the photographer Lars
Holst Hansen. The joint SEPAC-theme in 2013 was “Animal life”.

Briefmarken
The third and last issue in the series about Greenlandic herbs featured two very delicious herbs
with beautiful stamp designs by Nina Spore Kreutzmann.
The June stamp issue despatch was completed with two commemorative stamps that each
marks an impressive town jubilee in Greenland. Both Uummannaq and Aasiaat celebrated their
250th anniversary. Pierre Auzias from Uummannaq and now deceased Anne-Birthe Hove, who
was born in Aasiaat, created the images which are reproduced on the stamps.
17th September we issued a stamp by Bertil Skov Jørgensen, which marked the 75th anniversary
of the creation of POST Greenland in 1938. The stamp was issued on the date of the anniversary.
In a joint issue with Posta Faroe Islands we paid homage to the company “Nordafar”, which
was a Norwegian-Faroese-Danish fishing venture established in 1953 at Færingehavn about 50
kms south of Nuuk. Martin Mörck drew and engraved this joint issue, which was issued on 23rd
September.
21st October a new value in the definitive series with Her Majesty’s portrait again drawn and
engraved by Martin Mörck was issued. The same Martin Mörck also drew and engraved the
eleventh part of the series about significant Greenland expeditions. The Arctic accomplishments
of Dane Carl Petersen in the mid-1800s are celebrated on this stamp.
Bolatta Silis-Høegh was the artist, who created the Christmas stamps, which are also part of a
joint issue with Macao Post, where both post services present a joint first day cover envelope
with each post service’s respective stamps.

Jahrhunderts.
