Happy Holiday! We
DO have camp on
Monday! Regular
schedule & buses.
Katie McNally, Assistant Director
Settling In Saturdays
Dear Campus Kids,
The anticipation has been fun, but actually
getting started with camp this week was magnificent.
What a happy scene it was as the buses pulled onto
campus, the counselors started cheering and clapping,
and the campers came down the steps, feeling like
celebrities.
It was good to see old friends, and especially
good to welcome new faces to the CK-NJ family.
After only a few hours it was hard to tell who was at
camp for their first day and who was a veteran.
Activities are great, but the best part of camp truly
is making so many friends.
Right away campers started choosing their
activities. The more they do it, the more they
appreciate the opportunity to make decisions about
what they do at camp.
AND, if they have only been to day camp
before, they really appreciate that camp keeps going
after 4:00! With all that takes place from then up to
bedtime, it’s like having two days of camp in one!
We’ve had a fun week, but now it’s time to
spend the weekend with our families. We hope you
enjoy that time together and don’t get sick of hearing
camp stories.
We’ll see you Monday — July 4th! — for a
regular day of camp and THEN our “Rock of July”
celebration on Tuesday, and a week of amazing
activities. Come to think of it, you might want to rest
up this weekend! Be happy, be safe, be kind, and be
ready for the type of fun you can only have at camp.
P.S. — We are happy to welcome Jackie Sobol as our 2016
summer editor of the “Sundial”. Good job.
This past Saturday was CKNJ’s first Settling In Saturday of the
Summer! Settling In Saturdays are a great way to start camp off
right, and they happen the Saturday before every session starts, from
10:00 AM to noon. These days are times when you can come to
camp and set your room up-- without having to lug it all on the
buses on Monday morning! You can bring all your posters and
stuffed animals to make sure that your room is ready for you when
you get here Monday morning. You can even have your parents
make your bed for you one last time! This past Settling In Saturday
was particularly special for camp. Our whole staff was here to help
all the campers get moved in, and they were definitely all excited to
finally meet the campers they’ve been hearing so much about! Let’s
hear what they had to say about it:
“It makes camp feel real, it’s really happening now!” -Emily,
Counselor for Silly Putties
“I’m so pumped for camp!” -Michael, Counselor for Lightyear Lads
“I thought I was as excited as I could be, but now that the campers
are here I’m a whole new level of excited!” -Cara, Counselor for
Frizbaes
“The dorms feel like home now that everyone is moving in!” -Daisy,
Counselor for Sassy Slinkies
“It’s so great to put a face to a name and finally meet the campers
we will be spending so much time with!” -Ayo, Counselor for
Tomigotchicas
“It’s a lot of fun to meet all of the campers and their parents!” -Fitz,
Counselor for Tic-Tac-Bros
“The campers got us all really excited after a long week of training
and really reminded us why we’re here!” -Serena, Counselor for
Barbie’s Dream Bunk
So as you can see, Settling in Saturdays are fun for everyone. Our
staff loved meeting everyone and couldn’t wait for the campers to
get here! There is no RSVP required for Settling in Saturdays, so for
all the new campers coming later in the summer, feel free to stop
by! The remaining Settling In Saturdays are July 9, July 23 and
August 6.

Hello Campus Kids!!!!!
My name is Sydney and I am a counselor for the
senior girls group, Tamagotchicas! This is my fifth summer at
camp, but my first as a counselor. Even though it’s only the
middle of the first week, I can already tell that this summer is
going to rock! I can’t wait to see all of the talent shows and
plays and Rock of July and Campstock and especially all of
the campers involved showing off their awesome skills!
At camp, you can find me in the fine arts building doing
various arts activities, the dance studio reliving my ballerina
days, or the theatre making a complete fool of myself in
drama games. I love theatre so much that I study it in college!
This past school year, I learned quite a bit about William
Shakespeare, one of the world’s most famous playwrights.
Here are some Shakespearean fun facts:
1. Shakespeare’s birthday is unknown to this day. He
was baptized on April 26th, 1564, so it’s assumed that his
birthday was a few days before.
2. Shakespeare was a founder of
Lord Chamberlain’s Men, an acting
group that became the leading company in London at the time.
3. When Shakespeare was alive,
women weren’t allowed to act, so all
female characters were played by
men and young boys.
4. It is said that Shakespeare coined
many phrases that we use today, such as “good riddance”,
“knock knock! who’s there?”, and “the world is my oyster.”
5. Shakespeare preferred that people acted out his plays
instead of just reading them, so none of the original manuscripts exist.
I hope everyone has a fun weekend and I’ll see you back at
camp real soon!
-Sydney Gottesman, counselor for the Tamagotchicas
Hey guys! It’s Kiwi from the
ParaDupers.
For those of you who don’t
know anything about me, I am
from a town called Chatham in
New Jersey. I have two older
sisters named Abi and Quinlan.
Abi was a camper for one
year, a Staff Assistant for a
year, and a counselor for two. She is now working in the
office, so if you see her around be sure to say hi. I wrestled in high school, and I love playing ultimate Frisbee
and skateboarding. I am currently going to school for
film and would love to make movies and documentaries some day. I am sure a large number of you are
reading this on the bus on Friday, so if you are, I have a
riddle for you:
I’m as light as a feather, yet the strongest person
can’t hold me for more than a few minutes.
What am I?
Come to me next week for the answer!!
See you all on Monday!
Kieran Brennan, Counselor for the ParaDupers
Welcome Campus Kids Sundial readers! Naomi here on behalf of all of the Twister Sisters. Since
arriving, we’ve increased the sound volume in Insley by at least 347% so you better grab your earplugs on your way to lunch. Seeing the walls already getting filled up with art projects and extra
dorm decorations makes me so excited to see what else the summer brings!
From the Performing Arts headquarters I'm so proud to shout out to all of the kids who tried an
activity for the first time this week, from fencing to gymnastics to dance and even all the way to yoga
on the opposite side of campus, I can't wait to see how much you guys improve all these new skills
over the coming weeks.
For those of you reading this on the bus on the way home you already know how Thursday Night’s
Talent Show went, however I’m writing this before the show so I’m still waiting, crazy excited, to see
what amazing talent we have hiding throughout your divisions. I can't wait for time to catch up so
we can all talk about it together.
Hope you've all had an amazing week, I’ll be counting down the seconds until you all coming rolling
in on the buses on Monday morning!
~Naomi Hardy
Performing Arts Co-Coordinator/Older Girls (Twister Sisters) Head Counselor
Hello everyone! My name is Lynn Rose and this is my first summer at Campus Kids. A little
bit about myself is that I am from Troy, Michigan and I just finished my first year at Michigan State
University. This summer at camp I am a counselor of the Monopoladiez, one of the two super
bunks! After this first week of camp and having the opportunity to get to know the campers, I have
discovered a new energy and enthusiasm that can’t be found anywhere else. There are so many
activities here that I have never played before like musical painting, slack line, and gladiator. My
favorite part of the day is the evening activities, which everyone in the division gets to compete in as
a bunk group. As discovered on the second day during announcements, the Monopoladiez received
first place in the first evening activity, Bunk Group Olympics. I’m beyond excited for the rest of the
summer and making more memories with all the amazing people here at Campus Kids.

Hi Campus Kids!
My name is Mia Calderon and this will be my 4th summer at Campus Kids NJ, however this is my first year as a staff assistant. I am
on Team B (the best team ever if you ask me) and you will probably see me in the art room, nurse’s office, camp office or taking pictures around camp. I am SO EXCITED to be actually at camp instead of dreaming about how exciting my summer will be. The first
week of camp has been amazing; it was so exciting to meet all of you-- even though it was mostly through health screenings. This
week’s talent show was quite the way to start off the summer and you guys impress me more and more every year! If you see me
around camp feel free to say “hey” and brighten my sometimes stressful day! I can’t wait to get to know you all!
Mia Calderon, Team B staff assistant

ness and campers are looking forward
to continuing them next week. Fitness
will be offered two more times this
summer, and we will be offering tennis
and ultimate as specialties. These provide a special opportunity to concentrate on skill development and, in the
case of the competitive sports, on strategies. Parents may sign their campers
up for these programs, or campers can
just tell us they want to participate.
There is no extra charge.
Remember, that we also offer these
activities — fitness, squash, tennis and
ultimate — as regular activities
throughout the summer.

Hey Everyone!
I’m so excited to be back at Campus Kids NJ for my
third summer! This year I’m a counselor for one of
two Junior Boys groups (shout out to my Tweenie
Babiez!) along with my two co-counselors! It’s only
the third day here at camp and I can already tell that
this summer will be the best one yet!
I thought I’d take this time to run you through my
typical day as a CKNJ Counselor:
-7:30 AM: Start to wake bunk group up only to
realize 90% of them have been awake for hours.
-8:05 AM: Scarf down a big breakfast and even
more coffee
-8:50 AM: Help lead 3 activity periods with the
best campers in the world!
-11:50 AM: Announcements are given and I personally sing the Announcements song as loud as I
possibly can.
-12:10 PM: Lunch!
-1:00 PM: Bunk Time! My campers enjoy badly
beating me in checkers and ping pong.
-2:00 PM: MORE ACTIVITIES!! WOOT!
-3:50-4:10 PM: Snack time or, as I call it, “Ethanalways-loses-first-in-the-RoShamBoTournament” time
-6:00 PM: The Epic Feast Known as Dinner!
-6:50 PM: Clubs!
-8:10 PM: Evening Activity! Maybe one day my
campers will get to play Trivia Kickball!
-9:00 PM: Canteen! (Grab as many Pop-Tarts as
you can)
-9:20 PM: Bunk Meeting! I try to keep my activity
a secret but my campers always figure out the
plan…
-10:30 PM: Bed Time!
And there you have it! I may have left off
a few extra runs for coffee I make during
meal times but you get the gist! This
summer will be one of the best summers
of my life and I hope I can make it one of
the best for all of my campers as well!
Peace out everyone!

Hello Campus Kids!
I'm Jordan and I'm going to
be a junior at Livingston High
School in New Jersey this
coming September. This is my 6th summer at CK and I
am so excited to be back as a Team A staff assistant! A
Team A staff assistant lifeguards, sets up sport activities, puts water and snack out, sets up announcements
and more. I started Campus Kids as a sophomore, which
is the second youngest age group at CK and consists of
kids going into 6th grade. I like to ski, run track, play
soccer, dodgeball, and a lot of other activities. I also
volunteer during the school year with kids with special
needs where we cook and play sports like basketball and
Frisbee twice a week. Although I do like cold weather for
skiing, nothing beats the summer and I am thrilled to
be at camp this year!
Jordan Diamond, Team A Staff Assistant
CKNJ!!!
So here it is, my first summer Sundial submission! Yay! Firstly, I
want to say thanks for having me back, it’s great to be back.
This summer I’m one of the Duper boys counselors for the YugiBros. I’m going to be doing a multitude of activities, from sports
to arts and crafts. I’m super pumped to be back and cannot wait
to have ANOTHER great summer.
Zac Killen, Counselor for the Yugi-Bros
Hey Campus Kids!
Week One has had a fantastic start! As the younger girls head counselor and
one of the fine arts co-coordinator’s this year I’ll be keeping you up to date on
all the exciting things that have been happening in both my division, The Candyland Girls, and within the Fine Arts!
This week The Candyland Girls have been keeping themselves busy by singing all around Blair! Monday
night they divided up by bunk groups along with the boys from Ross’ Round up to compete in their
evening activity— Sing Down! On Tuesday night the Candyland Girls blew everyone away during dinner
by being the first division to sing their song AND not have to reference their lyric sheets. Finally, on
Thursday a number of them performed songs at the camp-wide talent show alongside some girls who
danced and acted. Besides singing we’ve been coloring, laughing, braiding hair, and making friendship
bracelets during bunk time!
In Fine Arts this week we started our first activity period of Design Studio! For those
campers at home who are reading and are eager to come to camp, Design Studio is a
combination of jewelry making and fashion projects that emphasize elements of design.
Each week we will show off the latest designs that we are making. This week we have been
making beaded bracelets and key chains that hold secret messages within them that are
hard to read unless someone knows the secret code!
Anyway, I hope you all have been having an amazing week whether you are at camp or patiently waiting to
join us in Blairstown!
~Chelsea Semeraro, Younger Girls Head Counselor/Fine Arts Co-Coordinator
My First Summer
By Maia Hubscher, Pogo Stick Posse
This is my first summer at CKNJ! But, my brother and an old school friend have been going here for a while.
I’m telling you, they talk about this place nonstop! Always re-telling camp inside jokes and telling stories I don’t
understand. I started to get scared that I wouldn’t be able to catch on to all the jokes and traditions and that I
would be an outcast, or I wouldn’t know the way of things, the people, the counselors, or my way around! I
found out that this was not the case at all! So here is a word (or a paragraph) of advice for all you new campers out there.
Don’t stress! It all works out! After one day of being here, I felt like I could lead a tour of the place! As for
knowing your way around, you always will have a counselor with you. And about the inside jokes and stories,
there are always more memories to be made! To this day, I only know a few names but I’m learning. Don’t be
afraid. Everyone here is super nice and has helped me get used to the routine. If you are thinking of coming
here next year, you should! You will have the best camp experience ever!
Hey there to all you Campus Kids Sundial readers!
Ross here writing from mine and the younger boys’ new crib, Lakeside! This year is so exciting for me— I get
to have two great roles at camp, being the Younger Boys Head Counselor for my division “Ross’ Round Up”
and the Fine Arts Co-Coordinator.
This year in the fine art department, we have got so many great activities! We have everything from creating
your very own Lego character, Mr. or Mrs. Potato Head
and even learning how to do Binary coded bracelets, and
so much more! Stay tuned!
This first week of camp has gone so fast! It has been so
great meeting all the new members of the Campus Kids
family! We are in for another amazing summer! See you
all very soon… SHAKA BRUHS!
~Ross Clark, Younger Boys Head Counselor/Fine Arts CoCoordinator
Atticus Finch reminded us in To Kill a
Mockingbird that “You never really understand a person until you consider
things from his point of view … until you climb
into his skin and walk around in it.” The small
town setting in that story was conducive to
doing that because people spent almost all of
their time together.
Camp is sort of a throwback to a town
like Macomb, where almost everybody knows
your name and you have the time to consider
others’ points of view.
This week at camp has been filled with
all types of fun, but also some poignant opportunities for campers (and staff) to put
Atticus’ words into action. Careless words
and unkind actions are easily noticed here.
So the recipient of any disrespect, whether
thoughtless or intentional, isn’t going anywhere and the ripple effects play out among
us.
As youth development professionals,
we know that kids are learning and making
mistakes and that these moments are the
teachable ones. So we work with individual
campers, and sometimes whole bunk groups or
even a division, to talk about what has happened and create a better situation going
forward.
The principles at work are simple: talk
directly and truthfully about what happened,
listen to everyone, agree all together about
what should happen next. What might create
unhealable wounds in the social media world
can, at camp, be a character building experience that makes us all feel stronger at the
end.
We want kids to learn that kindness is
a sign of strength, not a charitable action.
Hopefully, we are modeling that for our
campers every day.
[email protected]
Hey Campus Kids!
It’s Andrew Imbalzano here, Head Counselor for the G.I. Bros (Tweener Boys) and Co-Performing Arts
Coordinator. This week has been so jam packed with stuff I can’t believe it’s already over! Last night’s talent
show was a blast, combined with an incredibly successful Hawaiian Shirt Night. And next week is just as
busy! We’ve got Rock of July on Tuesday and the camp production of the Jungle Book next Thursday! Please
remember, if you’re involved with either of those to bring your instruments, music, and/or costumes to camp
this upcoming Monday! You can find the costume list in this Sundial! I’ve been super impressed by the
amount of flexibility our campers have shown in yoga and gymnastics, as well as all the musical improvement
everyone has made in learning guitar and drums this week!
On a separate note, I love puzzles and would like to offer y’all the opportunity to solve one! I will put a new
crossword in the Sundial most weeks and if you bring me a completed copy the following Monday, I’ll give
you a prize! Be warned, they will not all be easy
Andrew Imbalzano
Costume List for The Jungle Book
Please bring an outfit as close to the colors specified below.
We will be making masks/wings for everyone to wear as well.
Note that if shorts are specified that this can be changed for

Bazu -white shirt and shorts or neutral outfits (tan/gray)
Bagheera - black leggings and black long-sleeved top
Baloo - blue shorts and t-shirt
Share Khan - orange and black
Wolves - dark grey outfits
Hathi / Winifred / Elephants - light grey or pink outfits
Rama - Dark grey
Akela- Dark grey
Monkeys - brown outfits/dark grey
Village girl - any color dress
The most important thing is that you wear block colours.
Characters who multi-role will have masks for each character.
I bet you can't guess what just came in the mail today?!?!?! Eight brand
new blue ukuleles! I am so excited to see them be used all around camp. I
am also excited about Rock Of July! Tuesday is going to be a great day. We
are going to have 20 different carnival booths, a popcorn machine and a
snow cone machine. If that wasn't enough, we will also have some pretty
sick musical performances by campers and staff. There is no better way to
celebrate our independence than live music and camp
family. Remember if you would like to tie dye at Rock of
July, you must bring a 100% white cotton shirt.
Have a great week!
JKP3
ATTENTION: TIE DYE STARTS NEXT WEEK!!!!
Remember, your tie dye will come out best if you
use 100% Cotton. So make sure to bring your
cotton shirts, shorts, sheets, and anything else you want to
tie dye!
Hey Campus Kids!!!
It feels great to say that I’m writing this during the first week of camp! I’ve had
such a great time this week that it feels like all of the boring stuff during the year
that I had to do to get here was worth it!
We’ve definitely had an amazing week back at camp. Other than finally getting to
camp, we were able to do a lot of really cool things! We started not one, but two
sport specialties! We’ve already had some great matches in the squash specialty and everyone has already improved so much! Also, in the fitness specialty everyone has been learning so much and has really been working hard in the gym! Another thing that just started today but I’m really excited to see next week is our basketball tournament! It’s always great to watch these games because everyone is so skilled, but people of all levels
and ages still come together to work as a single, cohesive team. I can’t wait to see how they finish next week!
However, the most exciting thing for me this week was meeting all of you campers! This is also the time when
I have to give a shoutout to The Hasbros for being such an awesome division. I really could not have asked for
a better group for the older boys. That wraps up my article for the week but I can’t wait to see all of you back
here at Blair again on Monday!
-Brian Zilberberg
Older Boys Head Counselor and Co-Sports Coordinator
Hey Campus Kids!
I’m back again this year for a great second summer at
CKNJ. Camp has been on my mind ever since last summer and
I’ve been spending the past year hoping that summer would
just get here already! Now that I’m here it’s funny how fast the
jam-packed days go by, but hey,
time flies when you’re having fun
at camp.
This year I’m back with the
younger boys in Ross’ Roundup as
a freshman counselor for the Walt
Frisbees. Its great to see some familiar faces around camp and meet
some new ones as well.
Over the past year I’ve learned
how to do a few new activities and
hope to learn some more this year.
This summer you can usually find me jamming with the future
rock stars of the world in the guitar room, training the next
Knights of the Round Table in Archery and Fencing, as well as
cruising around the bowl with some fellow long boarders.
I truly can’t believe how fast the first week flew by and I
can’t wait to see what the rest of camp has in store for myself
and everyone else, too! I hope everyone has a wonderful week
and even greater summer!
John Kirk, Counselor for Walt Frisbees
Hi everyone!
I’m Dani, the sports coordinator and
the middle girls head counselor. This
week has been extremely busy but
awesome at the same time! In sports,
we have just begun the basketball tournament where all ages will complete!
We also have started the fitness
specialty where kids are learning how
to properly lift, improve stamina and
agility, and learn overall life fitness in a
5-day period! As for the tweener girls,
we have been participating in many
new evening activities including actionary (combination of Pictionary, charades, and sculpting), trivia kickball,
and sing-down! It’s an exciting first
week! See you all on Monday morning!
