ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL
OWNERS
The Ballarat International Foto Biennale takes place on country of
which elders and members of the Wathaurong peoples and their
forebears have been custodians for many centuries.
On this land their people have performed age-old ceremonies of
celebration, initiation and renewal. We acknowledge their living
culture and the unique role in the life of this region.

MESSAGE FROM THE BIFB CHAIRMAN
PHILIP HARRINGTON
Photography is a universal art form. These days, it seems everyone
has a camera, whether it be a complex DLSR unit with full-frame
sensor and interchangeable lenses or a simple point ‘n’ shoot that is
incorporated into a mobile phone.
Every day, millions of photographs are taken, printed, uploaded
and viewed. Creating a photograph requires no special skill, though
having a good eye will sort the good from the bad. Post-production is
a different matter. The process can be simple or complex, depending on
the demands of the picture… technical prowess doesn’t always produce
the best results!
Like all art forms, appreciation of a photograph is in the eye of
the beholder. The Ballarat International Foto Biennale aims to
educate, inspire, provoke and question by presenting photography
from all points of the globe. Our key focus is, of course, the biennial
festival, but we also communicate our love of photography through
exhibitions, events and workshops and various online publications and
programs.
The 2015 festival is our fourth in Ballarat. This year we expect to
attract more than 60,000 viewings across more than 200 events in
over 90 venues throughout the city. We’re thrilled at the growth we
are witnessing.
The core program features invited exhibits by 21 Australian and
international photographers to be staged at seven major venues
throughout the city, all within easy walking distance.
The fringe program is open entry and city-wide exhibitions will be
staged at various venues including cafes, restaurants, galleries and
commercial and community spaces. In addition to photographic
exhibitions we’re hosting workshops, seminars, portfolio reviews,
projection programs and other special events. There really will be
something for everyone.
Of course, to produce such a myriad of events requires an enormous
amount of planning, organisation and effort from a large number of
people. A collaborative effort from Jeff Moorfoot, our Creative Director,
Steve Marshall, our Executive Director, the many “hands on” Board
Members and a great contingent of volunteers make it all happen.
On behalf of the Board, I hope you can get to see as many exhibits as
possible and that you thoroughly enjoy the experience.

La Creciente
Chaskielberg creates beautiful photographs using one of the most
inspiring objects in the sky; the moon. The artist’s reliance on the
beams of a full moon mean that his images have an other-worldly
quality to them, and are quite unique. The series, entitled La Creciente,
captures a variety of subjects who work along the Paraná River
Delta in Argentina. From hunters to loggers, the celestial quality of
the light in the photographs acts as a strange counter-point to the
laborious and slightly mundane nature of the work being undertaken
by his subjects. It is this dreamy quality that sets apart Americana Now
The longing for nostalgia is a theme that runs through my photographic
practice. Whether it’s capturing individuals reflecting on times past
or exploring the idea of what it is like to live out your fantasies,
this project looks at a cross section of modern day Australians who
are influenced by the American style of the 1950s. It includes people
such as rockabillies, Elvis impersonators, Rock and Roll dancers, Pin
up girls, greasers and car lovers. There is a large sub-culture here in
Australia and it is the perfect place for a deeper exploration into the
idea of identity and imagination.
Chaskielberg’s work as something to be admired but not pitied. It is
perhaps his lack of reliance on professional lighting, and after-effects
that gives Alejandro’s work the kind of authenticity that other
photographers’ documentation of ‘developing’ communities lack. The
two year project has a great amount of realism despite a number
of the shots having a blurred quality to them because of the way
the moonlight interacts with the camera. Part serious study of river
workers and their communities, part photographic love letter to the
landscape of Argentina, La Creciente is a pleasure to behold.

Home by Nightfall
Home by Nightfall, started in September of 2012. My father, my
biggest supporter, my constant motivator, was unexpectedly
diagnosed with lung cancer. He and I lived many miles apart but we
both shared a need for solitude and long country drives were a remedy
to the chaos in our lives. We would often talk on our cellphones during
this time. The work did not start out as a series but more a filtering of
emotions. Without knowing what I was doing I started to photograph
the dust as I drove; then came the birds, then the stars. Quickly the
metaphors became apparent to me. Dust became a metaphor for the
mass growing in his lungs, the murmurations of starlings contrast to
the blustering tinnitus in his ears, and the boy, my son, represents a
life once had.
Pain and grief is boring, confusing and indulgent. It’s like trying
to answer the questions: How many miles in life? What is the shape
of the colour grey? When does an echo become a whole? Some
answers are unknown.
These are exactly the questions I was visually
attempting to represent in this work. During this time of evening drives
I was creating in parallel with the conversations I would have with
my Dad. The work became action and I became the director of this
landscape. I would create the dust by driving fast on the dirt roads and
jumping out of the car to capture it. The birds were easy to manipulate
(a quick hit of my car horn) and they would disperse. Photographing
through the windshield created texture and stars.
The work is an
internal landscape of the emotions and thoughts surrounding the years
my father was ill. In the final image, ‘a faithful surrender’ I attempt
visually to articulate the complete acceptance of his death with arms
wide open ready to surrender his fate.”

Silent Tears
The project ‘Silent Tears’ is developed in collaboration with the
participants, who are women with a disability and survivors of
gender violence. They represent a range of experiences and cultures
providing an important and respectful narrative and validation of
their experience, while also reaching out to other survivors and the
wider community. The exhibition provides a focal point for discussion,
education and awareness raising – providing the impetus for social
change. The stories of violence against women are universal, and it is
important that the voices and stories of women with disabilities from
around the world are heard. Each participant’s story has an audio
recorded and self-narrative interview. Some of the participants are
women with disabilities who have experienced violence while others
acquired their disability as a direct result of violence. Silent Tears includes contributions by Dieter Knierim and Margherita
Coppolino

Dream Machine
The Dream Machine explores societal frameworks and practices that
perpetuate limited and short-term desire for belonging and expression.
The dream of the modern world is addictive and insatiable. It appears
that we are somnambulists, unconscious at the wheel.
There are three parts to The Dream Machine installation: contextual
mural imagery, animated portraits and a mechanical daedalum.
Rhythm and repetition bind this multi-layered work. Each element is
sharable in digital format via QR.
Visitors first encounter ‘The Urban Score’, three large pasted murals
(4.5m x 3m) documenting sites of resistance within contemporary,
Australian culture. These images, abstracted and frenetic, are
expressions of an anarchic impulse, a desire for identity and
communication of discontent.
The viewer then encounters 4 horizontal, slowly looped individual
portraits. Playing with Nietzsche’s ‘eternal recurrence’ these looped
sequences expand the ‘decisive moment’, as declared by CartierBresson, the transition between public and private is revealed.
The desire for comforting personal behaviour and emotional
materiality is our challenge.
The final encounter is of a suspended ‘Daedalum’ or re-imagined
zoetrope. Reminiscent of ‘Sufi whirling dervishes’ or prayer wheels,
the daedalum, a spinning dome, is alluring and mesmeric. By entering
into the daedalum, one is surrounded by a moving image of the night
sky. This is an attempt to evoke the presence and reconnection to the
heavens. This piece is called ‘The Firmament’.
The Dream Machine installation invites reflection and is politically and
philosophically motivated. While the installation captures and reveals
moments of enslavement to our cultural dreaming, cosmological time
offers us a counter balance to this seduction.

Freezing
In 2012 extreme weather conditions brought the Bulgarian transport
system to a near standstill, heavy snowstorms and record-low
temperatures have blocked many regions in the country, as well in the
entire European region. The temperatures dropped to around minus
20 Celsius. Officials have appealed to people to stay indoors and be
careful. Police searched for homeless people to make sure they didn’t
freeze to death. The exceptionally cold weather and snowstorms that hit Europe
in February 2012, caused traffic chaos, road closures, straining
emergency services, grounding flights and pushing the death toll past
300 people and left entire villages cut off.
I have documented this event in my series ‘Freezing’ capturing the
distant stares of passengers frozen behind frosted windows in my
native Bulgaria.

Shanghai: Decadence with Chinese
Characteristics
In Shanghai, the conspicuous and competitive consumption of
champagne and luxury liquor appeals to China’s young elite who
see such flamboyance as an expression of sophistication as well as
wealth. With this project, I sought to document a hedonistic new rich
(the country has no ‘old’ rich) who are busy re-cementing Shanghai’s
reputation as home to some of the world’s most decadent nightlife: a
reputation that has certainly drawn sections of the city’s expatriate
community. In gaudy scenes not seen since the heady pre-World War
Two days, VIP patrons spend up to $60,000 on bar tabs at venues such
as M1NT, Richbaby, Linx, MYST, Muse and the circus-themed Cirque le
Soir (now closed).
Although I had been drawn to this modern incarnation of 1920s and
1930s excess and photographed it since my first visit to the city in
2010, the project really began to take shape in October 2013, when
I was commissioned to shoot extensively for a feature article for
German magazine, GEO. The contacts I made during this assignment
led to me expanding my series, which is still ongoing. Just as there
once seemed no end to Shanghai’s 1930s boom and no end to the
party, history tells us that there will be and it will come suddenly and
sooner than anyone expects.

Masterworks
My obsession with photography, my interpretation of it, and
what attracts me in other photographer’s work is immediacy, life
and communication. I’m interested and fascinated by the little
two-dimensional stage that contains a frozen performance. Whilst
I appreciate candid, I worship creation. There is such a joy for me in
the act of deliberately designing and bringing together elements and
people for a specific result – before I’ve even pressed the shutter.
Once at a Cartier-Bresson exhibition I observed an interesting, tactile
communication happening between his photograph of the little boy
carrying wine bottles, and the couples viewing that displayed image.
In almost all cases, one person would turn to the other and imitate that
pose and expression. That a photograph could produce such a precise
response from people is breathtaking to me. So I seek to do this in my
own work wherever possible. I want to engage people. I want to please
them, intrigue them. And ultimately, I want them to smile – inwardly
or otherwise. Giving pleasure to others with my photographs is its own
greatest reward.

Elements_1
According to the Greek philosopher Empedocles all the structure of the
world could be explained by the presence of four basic elements: Fire,
Water, Air and Earth
Of course, we have come to know that these configurations of atoms
are not elementary in any physical or chemical sense – not even clearly
definable substances. But the deeply-rooted cultural notion of – maybe
even the yearning for – some kind of basic, pure or natural state of
things is still very powerful.
I started with Fire as “element_1” which is probably the most
mystifying of all. As the chemistry of combustion remained completely
incomprehensible throughout most of mankind’s history, all attempts
of explaining the phenomenon, inevitably, had to resort to concepts
involving divine intervention or mythical substances.
I use photography to fix the volatile elements in a new aggregate
phase. I worked with a pyro technician to burn different substances
in a safe way. Even though the parameters of the set-up were well
controlled, fire displays an amazing range of behaviours. To me, it looks
very organic and not at all threatening. It will be very challenging to
bring out similar qualities in the other elements.

I will probably never know the real stories of these people but in
my mind they became characters in tales of my own invention…star
crossed lovers, a girl waiting for her lover to come home, boys sharing
a fantasy, innocent children with a little hint of something dark.
This is in many ways a collaboration, albeit one with a photographer
I have never met (and never will) and the man who has taken it upon
himself to conserve the archive. It is through the work of Cezar
Popescu in restoring and digitizing these images that I am able to draw
on such a rich source of inspiration in Costica Ascinte’s work.

Mrs Patronis Guest House
833 kilometres North East of Perth and on the edge of the Great
Victorian Desert lies the town of Leonora. Four kilometres south of
the town is the historic gold mine called Sons Of Gwalia. Underground
mining began in 1897 becoming the second largest mine in the state
outside of Kalgoorlie and the deepest of its type in Australia.
Mining in that form continued until 1963. Sons Of Gwalia is probably
best known for the fact that a young American geologist named
Herbert Hoover, later President Herbert Hoover, was its first manager.
He established a policy of cutting labour costs by employing mostly
Italian and Yugoslav immigrants, who became the bulk of Gwalia
residents. Adjacent to the mine site grew a settlement of shacks,
guesthouses and even a swimming pool for the population, that peaked
in 1910 at 1114.
Working as a professional photographer in Western Australia for
the resource industry, I often found myself with time on my hands
in unfamiliar locations. These images record such a situation when I
stumbled on Mrs Patronis Guest Home in Gwalia. Mrs Patroni supplied
a home from home for these immigrants a long way from Europe in
a very harsh country. In 1971 efforts were made to recreate the feel
of the early settlement with found objects and memorabilia placed in
situ. The ensuing period from then to my discovery of Mrs Patronis
Guest Home many years later installed another layer of patina, dust
and decay that I found irresistible. Since my trip, the Shire of Leonora
has begun to repair the buildings with the aim of creating a tourist
attraction.

I wanted there to be some ambiguity about the images. Things that
are almost real or not quite right. That’s why I like to place them in a
slightly surreal context. But I think it should be up to the viewer to
determine if the characters in my images are good or bad, light or dark.

Whether I like it or not and regardless of how far or how much I travel,
or, even where I live, I only have one motherland. I was born in a
place that was part of the now non-existent USSR. That place is now
a country called Belarus. Since I spent most of my childhood years
there and most of my memories come from there too, that makes it my
motherland. When I talk about the motherland, I don’t do it with some
sense of patriotic pride. I don’t believe in patriotism and sometimes,
I wish that I had a different motherland, perhaps like my adopted
motherland – Australia, or, somewhere else that’s warm and where the
people like to enjoy life. Road Movie
In Road Movie, a series commissioned for the International Automobile
Festival Dhervillers invited the stars of the road, legendary cars, to
travel across his vast open spaces, then created fictional collages,
narrative assemblies, causing temporal accidents. My parents immigrated from Belarus to Australia when I was ten
years old. Over the next decade we stayed very vaguely connected
to the country. The airfare was expensive, none of my relatives had
internet, and, of course, it is just so far from Australia in every sense of
the word. Australia shaped who I am as an adult, but somehow, since
becoming an adult, I’ve stayed more connected. Part of it has been a
sense of curiosity in where I come from. Another part has to do with
the fact that my wife is from Belarus. I never planned on marrying
a Belarusian girl, I almost tried to avoid them, for some cultural
differences that I couldn’t stand, but, we met while I was working on a
project and visiting family and… when you fall in love, you fall in love. The car is tearing away, a fugitive. As for the red Plymouth Valiant, the
car from Steven Spielberg’s early cult film Duel, it finally arrived to its
destination, the end of the earth. The truck that was chasing it in the
film has disappeared. Gone, away. Here, there’s nothing but the vast
sea and a lighthouse waiting for it. It’s the end of a long journey.
A DS car rolling on an arid road in the middle of nowhere. And rocks
sculpted by the wind sticking out of the earth like spikes. The sky is
heavy, thick. And the automobile is alone. No one is behind the wheel.
The car seems to know the way, and drives on towards some unknown
destiny. Its cousin, a Citroën SM is driving full speed down the main
road of a valley. Behind it, a house is consumed by flames.

Because I was ultimately shaped by an Australian way of thinking,
a way very different from Belarusian, my motherland sometimes
frustrates me beyond words. So many of its inhabitants are openly
racist, openly homophobic and ignorant. They don’t mind being ruled
by Europe’s last dictator, because they feel that they need a firm hand,
or because they say they’re better off than some other ex-Soviet
republics, or even crisis stricken Europe. The drinking is as bad as
it is stereotyped to be. The Soviet architecture is oppressive and
incredibly suffocating to live in. And, there’s still plenty of unnecessary
bureaucracy in almost any kind of transaction.

The Drilling Workers
The Drilling Workers’ celebrated in this exhibition come from the
Daqing Oilfield, Heilongjiang province, in North East China.
On September 26th 1959, industrial oil spurted out of Well Songji 3
which ended both the oil deficiency and opened a new era for the oil
industry in China.
For more than 50 years, workers in the Daqing oilfield have completed
over 100,000 oil wells. They have produced an accumulation of 2.2
billion tons of crude oil, and created an historical record of stable
production of 50 million tons per year for 27 consecutive years and 40
million tons per year for years.
In 2008, the Daqing oilfield launched a new project of oil and gas
exploitation. Over 100 drilling crews work together in different oil
blocks, reproducing memories of the Great Petroleum Campaign.
In order to document this new campaign, Pang XiangLiang, in his spare
time, followed the crews into these drilling sites on the front line of
exploration. The deeply moving and heroic images in this exhibition,
stimulated by spectacular work locations, intensive and trying
climatic conditions and the optimistic spirits of as they ply their trade,
documents the daily lives of The Drilling Workers

Phillip Island: A Visual Memory
The inspiration for these photographs arose from a wish to retain some
visual memory of Phillip Island, at least for history’s sake. I wanted to
preserve what is slowly changing, slowly being eroded. The island has
areas that are so disparate and so beautiful yet fragile and vulnerable
to the annual pilgrimage of over a million visitors. The darkly
mysterious Rhyll swamp; the distinctive, windswept beauty of the
Nobbies and the Nits; empty beaches overhung with gnarled Moonah
trees; and the sand, pale against the rolling, changing blue-grey sea.
I was drawn particularly to the chicory kilns. Remnants of the oncethriving chicory industry, these rickety wooden kilns have a distinctive
shape, indistinguishable from the island’s past. The same sense of
history prompted the photographs of farmhouses and other buildings;
their structures conveying the essence of the island’s character more
eloquently than any amount of explanation while the koalas, seals and
penguins are important and integral island inhabitants.
The images were taken on film using a Linhof 612 camera.

The Middle of Somewhere
In a digital world saturated with consumerism, The Middle of
Somewhere brings a voice of an unaffected childhood in a remote
corner of the world, the Southwest of Australia.
With a warmth and candour rarely seen, Sam Harris focuses his lens on
his daughters’ childhood, in a place where they are free to experience
the wonder of their surroundings. The trees and the shadows, the
sunlit faces and the passing seasons are movingly brought to life by his
evocative photography. This body of work spans a twelve-year period
in the life of the photographer’s family, since they have boldly decided
to leave the rat race in search for a simpler existence. A Travelogue
insert is included from the family’s life on the road in Australia and in
villages in India where they lived for several years and birthed their
second daughter. Simultaneously expressing something about the
meanings of love, growing up, sisterhood, family, landscape, and the
rhythm of nature, this work is at once both intimate and all embracing
and is a memorable and inspiring collection of images.

and in the future as well.” (Irina Chmyrewa)
Horses. Carpathians, Ukraine, 2009.
Regardless their natural beauty horses have been always trivial visual
objects to me. The series “Horses” presents a personal, subjective view
on usual Carpathian horses. These compositions corresponded to my
mood and emotions during the shooting. I saw and showed them like
these.
This project deals in an artistic-photographical manner with two
important industrial areas in Germany and Russia, which are likened
to each other through the common history of industrial culture. I’m
talking of my hometown Siegen and two of the biggest cities of Russia,
Yekaterinburg and Perm.
I was lying on the grass in a small Carpathian village. While inhaling
the herbs and enjoying the sun I heard a rustling nearby. I open my
eyes and I saw a strange creature. It was a usual horse but the aspect
in which I saw it was unnatural and different than the one in which
we usually see horses. This image followed me all the day long and
I decided to make a series embedding horses into the Carpathian
landscape in strange aspects. I got so excited that I spent all the time
of my visit lying/crawling on the ground under the horse hooves.
Meanwhile my girlfriend was bored and probably was thinking “What
an idiot. How could you crawl on the ground senselessly for five hours?
He just ruined our trip”. However, later she became my wife and I guess
that was her compensation for the bizarre vacation that I spent with
the horses and not with her. The result of that impulsive experiment
has become the series with the simple name “Horses”.
There is something that scarcely anybody knows: Yekaterinburg
and Perm were founded by the native of Siegen, Georg Wilhelm
Henning. Georg Wilhelm de Gennin (Russian: Георг Вильгельм де
Геннин), as he is called in Russia, October 11th 1676 till April 12th
1750, was a German born officer and artificer, who was invited by
Peter the Great to Russia because of having an outstanding knowledge
in metallurgy. In the 1720’s he founded the first mining schools in
Russia, travelled to Europe to promote specialists in mining and built
new plants in the Urals, which developed in a minimum of time to
one of the two most important economic and educational centres:
Yekaterinburg and Perm.
In 2013 I followed the traces of Henning and photographed important
enterprises in Germany and Russia to show their similarity, namely
the processing of steel and metal. As result there emerged a series
about the industrial architecture in the Siegerland and the Urals, that
presents the heretofore little known relation between these industrial
areas. The exhibition with my works started already in November in
Yekaterinburg and moves afterwards to Moscow, Krasnodar, Pingyao
(China) and back to Siegen. In addition, there will be a book with
wonderful photographs showing on 120 pages the industrial architecture
and culture of different regions, and essays telling interesting things
about the Siegerland, the origins of Henning and my work as an artist.

‘Introspective’
Submerged in their own worlds, dreams are reluctant subjects to
photograph. Sometimes a dream image materialises and we catch a
glimpse of that other world. Sometimes these images emerge thanks
to the people we encounter, or the places we visit. There is something
magical in attempts to capture slices of these dreams as they appear in
our day to day landscape.
‘Time’
We mark it with the precise throb of an atom, yet we struggle to
rationalise it. The most valuable treasure that humans cannot hoard.
Photographs have the power to stop time.
Each year Atkins Lab participates in an art festival by bringing

theme is up to the participants. Atkins stages the exhibition, prints and
frames the pieces, transports the work and hangs it. The exhibition is a

couldn’t coach it from them. Subjects had to immerse their faces into

‘Men’s Shed Photography’
Over the past four and a half years Craig has been photographing
men in their sheds and developing the Men’s Shed Photography
project. Through sharing the passion of his craft in photography and
the passion these blokes have for their craft of tinkering around the
shed, the intention is to highlight the positive effects a man’s shed (the
“man cave”) can have on his health and life. The aim of the project is to
further raise community awareness of men’s health through the art of
photography and the corresponding stories of a man’s love of his shed.
Freed from the external pressures and invasiveness of politics, opinions
and economics, it reveals the clear understanding and the generational
empathy for the beauty, decay, majesty and terror of the land.
Accompanied by joy and heartbreak, there is the knowledge that all
things and elements take their place in this vast landscape.
It is life imbrued with a resilient strength and an instinctive poetry
throughout seasons of change and decades of experience in the natural
world.

Perspective’
In 2012 my mother was diagnosed with early onset dementia, and at
that point she did not want anyone to know. But then, in 2013, much
as Hazel Hawke did in the early stages of her Dementia diagnosis, my
mother decided to not only speak out about her condition, but she
suggested working with me to highlight the difficulties we both faced/
would face in our roles as sufferer and carer. My mother initiated
the idea of a collaboration between us, and the research project
Deconstructing Dementia - a Carer’s Perspective commenced.
Deconstructing Dementia is available as an exhibition and

‘Rainbow Dance’
Damien Orriss is exploring the nature of the projected image, from the
process of the slide film all the way up to its current form of Digital
format of data projection.
‘Memories’
The following images represent memories. Memories of time spent
within nature, memories of that quick drive home after work or simply
the ever so beautiful rest stop on that long journey home. All these
memories were intended to be preserved and enjoyed by not only the
photographer, but for all those who view them.
Rainbow Dance is the freeing of the photographic process from its
traditions and boundaries, allowing the photographic process to
freely interact between the analogue cross processing and of digital
techniques.
Rainbow Dance is a rich and vivid colour abstraction, created of

‘Behind the Curtain’
‘Behind the Curtain’ is a vivid and sensational series of dramatic
photographic works by Daniel Kneebone portraying the burlesque
performer in narrative art. The images that Daniel creates depict
theatrical scenes in which the female performer plays a part in
moments of an evolving drama, creating a sense of wonder and
intrigue, bringing the viewer to a foreign midpoint between reality and
illusion and revealing the freedom of expression that is burlesque.

‘Unfolding’ The Teen/ Parent Portraits In this series of portraits a simple white background removes context
and associations. A physical similarity between the parent and teen
reveals a potent sameness yet also a heart aching difference as the
freshness of youth stands next to the ageing of life and experience.
Denise Martin, herself mother to a fifteen year old boy captures this
transitional time in the parent child relationship. Strong emotional
connections are obvious, yet life for all is on the cusp of change as the
child becomes an adult and the adult relinquishes their child.
‘Tales of Transformation’
In Tales of Transformation Dida Sundet explores the concept of
actively displacing a selection of Norwegian myths and folktales in
an Australian landscape, cultivating a space in-between two diverse
cultures. Through these Light Paintings she offers insight into
traditional and emerging cultural patterns, allowing viewers to engage
with meticulously constructed image worlds without the need to
understand their specific symbolism. The tales are transformed in
translation from one cultural context to another and allowed to grow
to see what remains, what is lost, what translates, if anything, and
what is created when past, present and future is merged to re-form an
idea of home.
‘Storms and Silhouettes’

‘Life is a Stage’
With fleeting moments making up most of our day we sometimes don’t
stand still long enough to engage with our immediate world.
‘Traveller or Tourist’
Traveller or Tourist considers the often quoted question with gorgeous
imagery that engages and transports. These luscious images expand
on travel as it mixes with exploration of light, emotion, past travels
and art influences… Elaine Batton’s photography continues her use
of a painterly approach. Photography filled with chiaroscuro in the
use of strong bold colour and contrasts that add depth to the whole
composition. Images of beauty, that are timeless, ageless…. and at
times whimsical.
I have fallen in love with this city often, sometimes multiple times in
one day and each time I make the commitment to return I fall in love
all over again.
If we take the time to pause and look around us we can share in the
happiness, sorrow, confusion, love, even tenderness of complete
strangers. Effie has captured moments of truth or acts of character
that allow us to linger momentarily into the lives of passers-by whilst
respecting the integrity of their stage.

‘osteoBLAST’
Continuing an investigation into the metaphoric comparisons between
the built environment and the structure and function of the human
body, Emma Stoneman has reinterpreted the Erasmus Bridge in
Rotterdam, Netherlands. The engineered cables of the bridge provide
resistance to external forces and serve to stabilise the structure.
Similarly tendons within the body straddle between muscle and bone
stabilising the skeletal form. As opposed to built structures the body
is an organic, dynamic, continually regenerating form. This series of
abstract photographic based compositions examines the function of
tendons within the body and their role in ‘building’ bone - by activating
osteoblast cells.

Some places change almost imperceptibly over time, others
dramatically. Our memories of places visited are shaped by many
factors. The emotions a site evokes, how we felt at the time, even who
we were with, work to create deep images and sensations we might
carry for years.
Revisiting places after a length of time, our memories are often
challenged. Changes have occurred, however subtly, and so we
generate new memories that subsume the old and endure for years.

Ian Kemp is a third year student studying photography at the
Photography Studies College in Melbourne completing an Advanced
Diploma of Photography. His work in Scapes explores landscapes
where he moves away from a straight representation of what he
sees and seeks to create the mood of the land. This is the element
that interests him most in this genre of photography. His images are
painterly in style, they are evocative and inspiring. You will be drawn
into the detail of his work and be moved by his emotional use of colour
and light.
’Irish Eyes’
Isaac’s Son is a photographer who, captured by the moods,
atmosphere, landscapes, people and history of Ireland, and has sought

‘Botanicals – Style, Function and Form’
‘Botanicals – Style, Function and Form’, explores the beautiful
formations of flowers, from the soft and dramatic sepals and petals
to the lesser known pistils and stamens that they enfold, sustaining
and reproducing life. In these works, Jacqui Martin juxtaposes the
softness, flow and vulnerability of the extrinsic parts of flowers with
the complex patterns and forms that lie within. Softness, beauty
and strength coexist in the flower as they do in the human form, and
reminds us that - as with people - it is necessary to look beyond the
surface to what lies beneath before you can truly know.

‘Drift’
Nature provides no end of opportunity to reflect and interpret, ponder

This series of work explores James’s fascination with people in

deconstructing the composition to values of Simplicity, Balance

intriguing and artistic insight into a moment captured in time.

‘The Stages of Being-Going Forward’
With dark mysterious passion we are seduced into a world of
beauty and culture though Bushie John’s powerful use of dramatic
colour, where the images seductively draw the viewer right into the
scene’s powerful narrative . The images take on lives of their own as
they strive to express the different moods of the bush. There is an
expression of deep cultural identity that is explicitly expressed in
their very powerful works. They move though the soft sensual colours
and moods to the more powerful passionate violent colours of the
Australian bush.
‘A Thief in Venice’
Disguised in his elegant customary dark attire and moving like a
shadow, John Smallman and his camera silently search locations in
the tourist free backstreets where the Venetians live. Following in the
footsteps of the Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie film: “Don’t Look
Now”, he moves like a thief. In the deep of night, in the rain, the heavy
fog and the cold light of dawn. He gives us a glimpse into the lives of
the wonderful people who have lived precariously on these waters
since the fourth century.
‘Outside In’
This exhibition is the starting point of a wider study exploring the
differences between and similarities of the external and internal
appearances of significant buildings in various locations around the
world. In some cases the outside sets the scene for what is to come
once the doors are open. But in many cases the exterior is a sombre
fortress concealing a far more interesting inside. A broad cross section
of functional structures are covered, from traditional houses of
worship to performance spaces to places of incarceration and provide
an interesting perspective of John Tozer’s award winning photography.

‘The Murrumbidgee Project’
A drop of water takes twenty six days to travel from the headwaters of
the Murrumbidgee River in the Snowy Mountains to its junction with
the Murray River. Alan Lee and Jonquil Mackey (who work together as
iSO images) are taking twenty six non-consecutive days to capture the
essence of this river.
‘Daily Life: No Foreign Lands’
Robert Louis Stevenson once penned the words ‘There are no foreign
lands; it is the traveller only who is foreign.’ Regardless of location,
human beings are bound together by a common thread … Basic daily
needs. The routine of daily life speaks a universal language the world
over. Julie’s journey takes her to an exotic land so diversely different
to her own. On the surface it would appear cultural, religious and
ancient traditions would segregate her explorations, but in fact she
found a striking similarity in so me instances separated only by time
and distance.
The photographers work closely together, but take different
approaches. Lee documents the river, often straying into the
surrounding hinterlands. Mackey creates abstractions, revealing where
water and land meet. This exhibition marks a halfway point in the
progress of the project.

‘Terrain’
Terrain explores the way the ground can shift beneath your feet,
within your home, within yourself. These bold images challenge our
understanding of scale, landscape and rural domesticity through
a juxtaposition of the real and the manufactured. Kate Butler’s
photography layers the bold, smooth, imperfection of childhood
playthings with a dreamy pastoral landscape, confronting ideas of
domestic and familial roles in a rural Australia affected by inexorable
social, climatic and political change.
‘Zingara’
‘Zingara’ is an exhibition of narratives. Excerpts of people’s lives from
distant lands. The images are often spontaneous and quirky and show
rare glimpses of a world and its people. Katherine’s images draw you

people, their lives and their cultures. The narratives leave you thinking,
reflecting, imagining and questioning. They inspire curiosity and desire
and leave you wanting to know more. These images are an invitation to

‘Ways of Seeing’
“Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before
it can speak.” (Berger, 1972). As an escape from recognizable
photographs while travelling in iconic locations Kristin used Lumen
printing to find new ways of seeing. Inspired by Jerry Burchfield’s
recording of flora in the Amazon, items were collected each day which
represented notable experiences within locations, such as exceptional
tomatoes, fragrant strawberries or the heavy scent of cigarette smoke
masking spring jasmine. The Lumen prints are presented both prior to
fixing and after fixing to demonstrate further: new ways of seeing.

‘Celebrating Community Diversity’
Leadership Ballarat and Western Region celebrates the strength of
community diversity showcases the unique beauty of our region and
the people and places that make up our community. The head, heart

to renew our communities from within. Enjoy the stories of leadership.

recently her overseas travels. Capturing the extraordinary beautiful

warmth, pride and commitment to keeping life rich in Swifts Creek is

‘Yangon Echoes’
Time and politics have not dealt kindly with Yangon (Rangoon), the old
capital of Myanmar, reflected poignantly in its fast-decaying colonial
architecture - gorgeous buildings from one of the most cosmopolitan
cities in the British Empire. A harsh military regime, the depredations
of tropical climate and forced neglect have reduced the people to living
in the most primitive way in the ruins of past glory days.
‘Armies of the Landscape’
Part A: The forest may be a place of complex beauty and diversity
but some offer up simplistic sentinels conforming to patterns of stoic
strength and unity. When disaster hits, drama increases and this
landscape is forced into greater simplicity.
‘Beyond Borders’
Through photographs and multimedia, MAPgroup’s Beyond Borders
documents the unique experiences of asylum seekers and refugees
seeking a safer life under exceptionally challenging circumstances.
With a sensitive eye photographer Tim Webster records the lives of
Yangon residents in their crumbling palaces and pays due honour
to their fortitude and their determination to maintain ancestral
connections.
Part B: There are items and subjects all around us which through
simplicity or commonplace have their in-built beauty overlooked, until
we look again.

life, but they have one thing in common – the love of speed.
‘After the Rush’
The discovery of gold in Victoria in 1851 changed our State forever.
We are familiar with the grand buildings constructed during the gold
rush period in now thriving regional centres such as Ballarat, Bendigo,
and Castlemaine, but the gold rush also left a ghostly but beautiful
landscape, with its abandoned mines and ruins, and ghost towns frozen
in time. Marie Watt’s series After the Rush uses infrared photography
to emphasise the atmospheric solitude of the lesser known gold rush
sites - in a bid to remind us of a wider vibrant, though harsher, past.
‘360x180’
In the series “360x180”, Mark Hoffmann takes a mathematical
approach to landscape photography, using a combination of High
Dynamic Range (HDR) and image stitching techniques to observe the
colours, tones, angles and textures of his surroundings. Each piece
is created through the capture of over 100 individual photographs,
processed using four software packages, to create miniature planets
that exaggerate perspective and highlight the intrinsic beauty that
exists in the mundane.

‘H St, Washington D.C. – 2014/15’
Parts of H St, in Washington D.C. are located less than one mile from
the US Capitol Building. In 1968, as a result of street riots in response
to the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King, large areas of H St were
damaged and destroyed. For almost 40 years, until the early 2000s,
evidence of damaged and derelict buildings could still be witnessed.
‘Beauty’s Sting’
Meet Charlotte. A twenty-three year old artist, performer, writer, and
model. Her mother is Chinese-Jamaican. Her father is London Cockney.
Making an explosive mix of beautiful looks which you can’t quite work
out. Like Isabella Rosselini, Helena Christensen, and Naomi Campbell,
before her, Charlotte is blessed, and burdened by her looks from mixed
parents. Someone so pretty can’t possibly have problems. Nor can she
be beautiful and brainy simultaneously. But she is. Being twice blessed
must be a sin.
The images presented are part of a larger collection of work produced
during the autumn and winter of 2014/15 and include images of
urban redevelopment projects and portraits of local residents. Audio
interviews were also conducted.

Time seems to me to be an idea that accompanies us throughout our
lives; we can measure it, or spend it, squeeze more into it or while it
away, but time ticks away regardless.
These pictures play with the idea of time as a constant companion to
life’s meandering journey, often disregarded, constantly calculated,
sometimes ominous, always present.
The photo montages are constructed from photographs taken while

‘Buen Camino’
In 2015 Michelle Dunn & Alison Shirley walked the last 110km of the
Camino De Santiago in Spain. During this famous pilgrimage, what
fascinated them the most was the parallel journeys of the landscape
around & the landscape within. Alison was drawn to the metaphor
of doors that open & close on us and the similarities of people & how
they survive. This resulted in a close study of age old buildings along
the way. Michelle’s lens turned towards the people, attracted to the
Camino from all over the world, who shared their personal stories with
her as they walked.

viewer to enjoy the experience and respond emotionally. At the heart
of Mira Krulic’s photography are ardent curiosity and the constant
examination of open-ended possibilities. In this series, she continues
her experimentation with the phenomenon of light making subtle yet
beautiful images that inspire us to open up our eyes and see how light
creates and reveals.
‘Baby you’re a Star!’ - part one
‘Baby you’re (I’m) a Star’, is the song by Prince which subconsciously

‘Baby you’re a Star!’ – part two
Suttons House of Music is a beautiful, historical renovated venue. This
entertainment hub is the perfect setting for Nadia Moth’s photos which
continue to focus on musical entertainment, fashion and local content.
Interacting with the past, jazz nights that emblazoned style and dress,
she’s paying homage to times gone by.
Challenging herself with the use of a smaller compact size camera she
strives for what can still be achieved.
‘Australia Felix - Remains Of New Work’
Observations, remixes and re-imaginations of the landscape of Victoria.
Shot predominantly in and around the recently fire-ravaged Black
Hill reserve in Kyneton, this series counterbalances the impregnable
with the vulnerable, regeneration through devastation. Through his
treatment of texture, colour and reflection, face to face encounters,
aerial views or microscopic studies are all open to interpretation. But
with his recognizable, unique and controversial photographic style, and
a lifelong obsession with shape and form, Neil breathes life into these
everyday monoliths, creating a family of imaginary characters, each
with their own story of life in the bush.
‘Journeys’
Journeys gives but a small snapshot of the hundreds of different
journeys we travel in a lifetime, from the physical to the emotional,
mental and spiritual. A desire to pay homage to the history of
photography, mingled with the words of Chris de Burgh and the
creativity of Brooke Shaden have infused the flavour of Journeys.
Neville draws from life experience for the storyline within each photo.
Medically retired by age 30 after an accident Neville uses photography
as both personal therapy, and as a way to stay connected with
community. Please drive attentively, you could change someone’s life.

Exploring the theme of men of community spirit, MANU, transcript

explores men’s health, diversity, resilience, and the contributions men
humbly make to their local community.
‘Videre’ (Latin for vista)
Photographic works in this exhibition are drawn from the landscape of
Central Victoria. The artist Rhonda Baum is also a published poet and
the images appear as poetic and have the quality of the momentary.
The tonal range of these photographs lends to narrative and invites the
viewer to wander, contemplate and be still.
‘Kenso –Street Life in Japan’
In Japanese, kenso (喧騒) literally translates as ‘bustle’ and describes
the ‘hustle and bustle’of sounds in the city. In this exhibition, Richard
Chenhall invites the audience to immerse themselves in the rich
tapestry of street life in Japan and to explore an accompanied website
accessible on smart phones. The sonic Japan project (http://sonicjapan.
clab.org.au) is a digital repository that Richard and others have created
to communicate sonic life in Japan. In this series, images of street life
in Tokyo and Kyoto provide evocative reflections on movement and
stillness within city environments.
One person makes a change, and as a collaborative community, these
actions and people shape a place.
Rebecca Hosking’s photography captures the unique spirit and essence
of each individual man as reflected in the style and mood of each
portrait. The overall exhibition portrays a spectrum of man.

words of these men.

RICHARD SHAW
‘Heavenly Creatures’
Heavenly Creatures explores the aesthetics of death on the Australian
Landscape. From populated urban centres to the remote outback its
subjects are a variety of animals - both native and introduced species.
Some of these creatures have perished via natural causes, others have
died at the hands – directly or indirectly - of mankind. Indeed a sense
of the macabre permeates these images, yet each of these creatures
radiates a sense of heavenly peace. While imagery of human death is
often hidden in society, this series depicts animal death as an integral
and sometimes beautiful part of the landscape.
‘Some Place Else’
In ‘Some Place Else’, photojournalist Richard Shaw ventures beyond the
everyday and familiar landscape of the urban Australia he grew up in
to explore the cultural and architectural vibrance of the world outside.
During almost a decade based in China, Shaw travelled from the
back streets of Kolkata to the megatropolis of New York, and literally
countless other places in between. With its distinctly other worldly
and sometimes older worldly feel, this series is in essence a captivating
snapshot of the everyday poetry and art of the world beyond, and
those idiosyncratic human encounters.

‘The High Country’
The High Country is synonymous with many myths and legends of the
past. For more than 25 years Richard White has captured this area
with beauty and style. Mt Buffalo and the Buffalo Valley, The Bogong
High Plains, The Howqua Valley and many other magnificent areas.
‘Landscapes’
We tread the landscape, minds filled with irrepressible details of our
daily grind, often oblivious to the imagery that engulfs our being but
not our thoughts. To busy to really see the light that plays across
our field of vision; constantly changing the form, texture, colour and
impact of the landscape in which we wander.
Clear your mind of the mundane. Re-energise your passion for the
landscape as you stroll through Rick’s photographic gallery. Enjoy
a coffee as you chat to Rick about his images, his vision and the
techniques he uses to bring them to life.
‘Life in India’
A deep connection with India and its people is what takes Rochelle
back there time and again. In a country known for its extraordinary
visual scale, Rochelle is instead drawn to India’s ordinary people and
their everyday tales. She seeks to engage with the people she meets
and to convey those moments through photographs. Her striking yet
intimate environmental portraits reveal a pulse within everyday India.
Rochelle gives copies of her photos - in the form of enlargements and
photobooks - to the people she photographs so that they, too, have a
record of these shared moments.

In the spirit of Ansel Adams and other exponents of large format
photography, Richard’s black and white images have a timeless and
in some cases ethereal quality to them. From grand vistas of the
mountain ranges to a more intimate detail of the Snow Gums and rock
formations. A must see exhibition.

Inspiration and Imagination
Defining moments to share.
Parched narrates the contemplative state at the crossroads of our
lives. Where one is called to lay bare their existence to find inspiration
and meaning in their life. Photographer Sandhya Porritt uses her
imagination to meld the desert and soul yearning in an environment
yielding solitude and a meditative state where inner desires beauty
reveals and expresses itself in poetic grace.
‘Women of Arab Spring’
Much attention has been brought to the youth of the Arab Spring, but
Muslim women in Palestine have long been holding their communities
together and fighting steadfastly for their families and their rights as
a people. Through my lens, these intimate portraits of Arab women
and their communities show their resilience, pride and empowerment.
They are celebrating their heritage while continuing the many arduous
challenges to their transition through modern times.
‘California’
Urban greenery with its carefully manicured symmetrical
arrangements and the artificiality of city-landscapes intrigue me. The
conflict between a desire for comfortable living, conservation of limited
resources, and the impact of decaying ecology in our communities
manifests itself in the collision of nature and artifice on every street
corner and stretch of open road.

‘From Africa with Love’
We all show character, emotion, and affection. Sometimes we need
to spare enough time observing to notice even the most insignificant
creature can communicate without words.
‘Organic Balance’
These natural objects represent narratives and archives that also serve
as storyboards of time and place. Translated with the Photogravure
process, these unique forms of precious beauty have a connecting
thread related to materiality, to object, and to preciousness.
The trials of daily break even, riding the cycles whilst overcoming the
drudgery of muddy boots, dead flies and visual merchandisers block.
At times this can end in commercial let down.
These photographs represent the retail reality, hope and resilience of
those committed to having a go.
For seven years Shanna Love has been photographing wildlife.
During 12 months in Africa she developed a portfolio that revolves
around emotions rather than the technical aspects of photography,
resulting in images focused on expression rather than species.

‘Frankenstein Atomic Frontier’
The world of Frankenstein Atomic Frontier is one where deviance
and the grotesque interplay with ideals of the gothic. Inspired by the
game with the same namesake, Stacey contrasts traditional notions
of beauty and aesthetics with scars, stitches, body modifications and
other signifiers of the traumatized self. Frankenstein Atomic Frontier
plays with the concept of industrial consumer society’s manufactured
monsters.
‘How far We’ve Come’
Every year, Victoria welcomes more than 160,000 international
students from around the world. Their stories are the moments on
display in How Far We’ve Come, a photographic exhibition celebrating
the local experiences of Victoria’s vibrant international student
community. Presented by Study Melbourne, the exhibition features a
series of images captured by the students to recognise their indelible
contributions and unique perspectives while living and studying in
Melbourne and Victoria. Study Melbourne is a Victorian Government
initiative.
‘Tibet’
The Tibetan Plateau is vast and unforgiving and includes Mt Everest,
the highest mountain in the world, as well as endless stretches of
flat land broken by high passes. The colours of the land are subtle
and breathtakingly beautiful. But it was her interest in the Tibetan
Buddhist religion and the way it affected the culture of the Tibetan
people that prompted Sue Nicol to take a 3 week road trip across
the Tibetan Plateau and record these things on camera. Sue’s photos
have captured glimpses of life and the environment with warmth and
empathy

‘Ballarat Through My Eyes’
The Ballarat Foundation asked the people who live, work and play in
Ballarat to show us Ballarat through their eyes. To scratch the surface.
To show us what is important to them, what it is about our city that
inspires them. Here is the result. An unique exhibition of Ballarat, by
Ballarat. A celebration of our amazing city and the people and places
which make it so unique. So step inside, and view Ballarat through the
eyes of the people who love it.
‘Night Vision: Exposing the Night’
Photography is all about light, no matter the source of the light.
For his current exhibition Tim has been experimenting with night
photography – with no flashes to been seen. Using a variety of light
sources Tim work captures an array of subjects in a unique manner. His
light sources include LED Flash lights, matches, candles, glow sticks,
the moon and even passing car headlights. Often his subject matter
reflects rural life, especially long since ‘retired’ farming equipment, but
he also turns his lens to capturing the magnificence of the Milky Way.
‘Languid Nature’
Vanessa has been a keen photographer since childhood, mainly
taking photos for marketing purposes and sporadically exhibiting or
publishing. After an extensive career in creative industries and now in
education, the creative roots have never been entirely left behind. She
sees the world in shifts of lights and patterns, with rich textures and
demanding angles … as potential photographs. Moving from Melbourne
in 2013 to Ballarat, she moved from urban exploring to discover
potential photographs to rural reconnoitering.

‘Bohemia’
Bohemia explores the role of the artist’s model while providing homage
to Norman Lindsay’s works. Beautiful curves, perfect skin and skilled
posing by the models is the inspiration for his plethora of work and
serve as the linchpin between the viewer and the artist. Nudes have
been accepted in art for centuries, although the model has not had
the same position of power and glory that artists have enjoyed. Here
is a tribute to the artist and also to his models without whose skill,
patience and daring we would not be enjoying his legacy today.
‘Hard Light’
Hard Light represents an examination of the early memories of the
artist growing up in the Australian wheat belt town of Yarrawonga in
the 1960s.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
DANIEL COBURN
Daniel Coburn, Assistant Professor of Photo-Media, University of
Kansas will investigate how the mining industry shaped the social,
cultural, and geographical landscape of Ballarat.
Coburn will engage with Federation University students to explore the
intersection of video, lens-based media and performance art, to engage
with the history of ephemeral art, and understand the conceptual,
social, and political motivations that inspired early practitioners of
performance/video art.
Daniel W. Coburn lives and works in Lawrence, Kansas. His work
and research investigates the family photo album employed as one
component of a visual infrastructure that supports the flawed ideology
of the American Dream. Selections from his body of work have been
featured in exhibitions at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art and
the Chelsea Museum of Art in New York. Coburn’s prints are held in
collections at the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago),
the University of New Mexico Art Museum, the Mulvane Museum of
Art, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, and the Mariana KistlerBeach Museum of Art.

Second Ballarat International Foto Biennale Symposium, Presented
by Photography Studies College
In the catalogue for the The photograph and Australia exhibition at the
Art Gallery of New South Wales this year, Senior Curator Judy Annear
wrote, ‘There is much at stake in what might constitute the nation
state, which is as porous as photography is mutable’. Among its many
ideas, the exhibition posited photography in Australia as a medium for
the constant renegotiation of the nation.
This symposium aims to continue the discussion generated by the
most important exhibition of photography in Australia in 25 years,
by looking beyond national borders to ask what it means to be a
global citizen, with particular reference to the role of images. The
keynote speakers will be Professor Nikos Papastergiadis, from The
University of Melbourne, and Senior Curator Judy Annear, from the Art
Gallery of New South Wales. In addition, there will be presentations
from practitioners, teachers, academics, curators, librarians, and
independent scholars.

ONE FOR THE BOOKS PRIZE
THE FRINGE PREVIEW EXHIBITION
This immersive installation commissioned by BIFB from my
shinyshinyworld projects that look experimentally into environment to
see what we usually do not see, the marks left by legends of place the
scars buried in landscape.
One for the Books is a prize for self publish, on demand photography
books and is open to photographers world wide. The judging panel
chose twenty books thjat have been printed by our sponsors Blurb and
exhibited at The Lost Ones Gallery from August 22 to Sept 20 2015.
We will walk away enticing our imaginations to look at the movement
and blur of photographs, the colours of smell and sound will help us
connect more willingly to an overlay of story about this controversial
place.
The general public* will decide the winner by casting their vote for
their favourite book. Prizes are AUD$2,000 + a $500 Blurb voucher
for the winner. Runner up receives a $500 Blurb voucher and the next
5 highest vote getters will each receive a $300 Blurb voucher. Also,
one lucky voter will win a $500 Blurb voucher in a random draw from
those who voted for the winning book.
A framed iconic image from each of the 120 fringe shows will hang
just inside the main entrance to the Mining Exchange. These images,
printed courtesy of HC Pro in Horsham, will be available for sale
during the festival, the proceeds of which will be split between the
artist and the BIFB. Each show will also have a DL holder to distribute
promotional information about their BIFB’15 Fringe Show. The Fringe
Preview will be open daily throughout the festival from 10am to 5pm.
The stories and images I present here are about seeking
understandings of local legends and the footprints left behind by
others in usually remote locations, from the heights of the Himalayas,
to the deep Malaysian rainforest.
Around the video works and infrared photographs are domestic games
of mark making, movement and surprise and the gentle Guardians
will use the Federation Bells to bring up the now silent breath of the
auditorium.
It is a stimulant for your imagination to understand what marks and
therefore makes a space, as wide as an Indian palace and as wild as a
tropical rainforest. These images play within the shadows of Civic Hall
and let you invent your own story, colour and smell of Civic Hall In The
Breath of Ghosts.
There has been a growing interest in video and projection-based
installations since Dr Anderson created the first projection on the
Sydney Opera House in 1998. Her career has focused on working
within the edges of urbanised landscape in art, architecture and
environment. She is able to create projects that blend experimental
technology with traditional processes to explore and re-interpret
contemporary issues.
She has created major public art permanent and performance works
for Festivals, including the St Tropez Film Festival, SXS in Denmark,
Jubilee Festival London, Ten Days on the Island, Tasmania and the
Sydney Biennialle. Recent works have been included in “The Feel of
Color’ at the Louvre, Paris; and ‘Identity and Body’ at Venice House
during the Venice Biennalle, and Iceberg at Wollongong Regional and
Customs House Sydney.
Dr Anderson is an Honorary Professor at Federation University and
continues residenies and projects in Norway, Iceland, Denmark and
both the Arctic and Antarctic working with various international
organisations to create a series of projects, videos and installations as
the shinyshinyworld.

ProCounter is a new website and newsletter dedicated
to reporting on the business of professional photography.
ProCounter is fiercely independent, and aims to reflect
the interests and concerns of its readers. Along with
the earliest local reports on new product releases and
other industry developments, it doesn’t side-step the
more controversial topics, be it the Getty juggernaut;
copyright legislation in the online age; local photographers
in the news; or issues with local suppliers and industry
associations.
If you believe professional photography in Australia
deserves an independent, third-party source of news
and information free of supplier or association ‘spin’,
please subscribe to ProCounter to receive our FREE
fortnightly newsletter.
