GRAB JEAN-PHILIP
St.
Lucia
By Mark Nagel
St. Lucia’s
sophomore record,
“Matter,” the followup to their
breakthrough debut
“When The Night,”
was produced by
bandleader JeanPhilip Grobler, along
with Chris Zane
(Passion Pit, The
Walkmen). Having
recorded the record
primarily on a studio
consul formerly
owned by Gloria
Estefan and Miami
Sound Machine,
Grobler compares
“Matter” to the
band’s first LP by
saying, “If the last
album sounded like
the tropics, this
album is the desert.”
St. Lucia will in

GRAB Magazine
recently had a
chance to talk with
bandleader JeanPhilip Grobler.
MARK NAGEL: When
was the first time you sang in
public?
JEAN-PHILIP GROBLER: I think I
was seven or eight years old. I was
in my school choir and the song,
strangely enough, was “New York,
New York.”
auditioning. I auditioned and made
it into the choir and went to the
school for five years.
MN: At 10, you are singing your
national anthem at Cape Town’s
Newlands Stadium in Africa for the
1995 Rugby World Cup. Did you
understand the largeness of this
event?
JPG: No, I don’t think I did at the
time, but it was an amazing
experience. But I don’t think you
can understand the magnitude.
Looking back, it was a massive
experience.
MN: How did you get involved with
the Drakensberg Boys Choir?
JPG: When I was in school that had
auditions for the school choir, I was
picked because I could sing the
loudest, so when I was about nine,
I had heard about the Drakensberg
Choir. It appealed to me, so I told
my parents that I was interested in

audience. Did you even realize who
he was at the time?
JPG: Absolutely. At 10, I don’t think
you have the
complete grasp because he was
just out of prison. Some people
were excited and some were afraid
something could happen.
MN: After singing at the Worlds
Cup, do you even get stage fright
anymore?
JPG: I really don’t anymore unless
it’s a massive show somewhere.
MN: Growing up, what music did
you listen to?
JPG: Michael Jackson. I loved the
music from Andrew Lloyd
Webber musicals, Phil Collins,
Lionel Richie when I was
young. Then I got into Boys to
Men and that era of pop R&B;
in in my teen age years, it was
Radiohead.
MN: I first learned of St. Lucia
from last year’s PrideFest in
Chicago. How did the group
get together?
JPG: I had been getting the
group when I was in
Williamsberg in New York and
when it was time to perform
live, I started to go on a
search. I met our original
drummer Nick Brown in a
bar one night. We had a
different keyboard player for
our first show and then we
had Mickey.
MN: For the person who
has never heard your music,
how would you describe it?
JPG: I would describe it as
escapist progressive pop
music.
MN: I feel you don’t totally
get the many layers of your
music until you listen to it
four or five times. You are
going to be performing at
Lollapalooza. What can
Chicago expect?
JPG: We put on a very
energetic live show. We love
people in the audience. Last
year, at Lollapalooza, we
didn’t have any production.
This year, we will have all
our own lights and stage
set-ups so it will seem
much bigger and epic. We
might have a couple other
surprises in store.
MN: You seem to be on the
road all the time, but you
have this fabulous new
album out. How does the
recording process work for
you?
JPG: The process has
changed drastically on
“Matter” because the first
album was basically done in
my home studio with all of
my instruments around
8

me. I was in New York and I had all
the time in the world. Once we
were on the road, I had to start
embracing recording on the road. I
had a laptop set up and learned
how to record in not very ideal
situations. In some ways, it worked
in my advantage. Sometimes when
you have limitations, it’s good
because you have less distractions.
It was less ideal but more
productive.
MN: What were your influences on
“Matter”?
JPG: It’s hard for me to put a finger
on it, but I am influenced by what is
happening in the world. I also think,
as you get older, you do think
about other things. Plus I have
been in love with the same person
for 14 years and you do fall in and
out of love in that time and it is an
influence.
MN: Did you produce and write all
the music on “Matter”?
JPG: Yes, I produce the album with
my friend Chris Zane. There are two
or three songs I co-wrote with a
few people.
MN: Talk to
me about
the video for
“Help Me
Run Away.”
Whose idea
was it for
this video?
JPG: The
video is a
combination of my
ideas and
my friend
who did this

ago for this
band – Cap
Van Sedo –
that never
saw the light
of day. I saw
it and
thought it
was the best thing she ever did
and, throughout the years, I was
always looking for a way to use that
idea.

GRAB ANDRÉ
André De Shields
Actor, Director,
Choreographer and
Educator
By Mark Nagel
In a career spanning 47 years,
André De Shields has distinguished
himself as an unparalleled actor,
director, choreographer and
educator. He is the recipient of
three Jeff Awards, the first as a
Director for Victory Gardens’ 1987
production of The Colored
Museum and the remaining two as
Featured Performer in a
Musical: Play On! (1998) and Mary
Zimmerman’s The Jungle
Book (2013), both at Goodman
Theatre. In fact, André’s
professional career began at
Chicago’s Shubert Theatre in the
1969 production of Hair. His most
recent appearance in Chicago was
at the Bank of America Theatre,
where he created the role of Ron in
the Broadway bound musical Gotta
Dance. In November 2015, Mr. De
Shields received the Award for
Excellence in Theatre from the
Theatre School at DePaul
University. A
multiple Tony
Award nominee,
he is best
known for his
show-stopping
performances in
four legendary
Broadway
musicals: The
Wiz, Ain’t
Misbehavin’,
Play
On! and The Full
Monty.
MARK NAGEL:
Didn’t your
professional
career start in
Chicago at the
Shubert
Theatre?
ANDRE DE
SHIELDS: Yes, in 1969.
MN: What was that first big break
like for you?
AD: In 1969, in the very month that
I graduated from college, I got my
first professional job and it was
Hair. It was awesome and
incredible. It was over-the-moon
amazing.
MN: Do you ever get comfortable
being naked every night in Hair?
AD: I was used to being naked
before I was paid to do it. I was,
like, I was going to be paid $400 a
week which was a fortune in 1969
and I get to take my clothes off … I
could do this for the rest of my life.
MN: The world really got to know
you in 1975 when The Wiz opened
on Broadway. What was that time
like for you?
AD: It was a milestone. It was a
12
GRAB Magazine

right of passage. It was legitimizing
my life to my family. I grew up in
Baltimore, Maryland with 10
siblings. It was always, Andre, why
don’t you have a secure job to fall
back on but when The Wiz
happened, everyone lined up to say
I knew you could do it. It was really
a dream-come-true.
MN: I will admit the future gay boy
in me had the cast album to The
Wiz.
AD: After the audition process, and
I knew I was going to be The Wiz, I
literally danced down 44th Street.
MN: I did not know that you did
choreography for Bette Midler.
AD: I was the first person to
choreograph the Harlettes in
Chicago. You are probably not old
enough to know some of the bars
from the Gold Coast and Bette was
doing a national night club tour. I
think the club was called The
Happy Medium and this would have
been 1970. Well, Bette was friends
with Joe Montana. Joe and I lived in
the same apartment complex. He
invited her over and in the course of
14
GRAB Magazine
the
afternoon,
Bette said
she
wished her
girls
moved
because
they were
all singers
and not
dancers or
movers.
And I was,
like, Bette,
what kind
of moves
do you
want?
Bette was,
like, I am the star of the show. I just
want them to sway a little. I said I
would be more than happy to help.
We then met at the Happy Medium
and at the time, the Harlettes were
three white ladies who wore black
tube dresses, so I suggested a step
touch, turn around, shake a little,
step touch. That was the first
choreography and I did go on two
more gigs with them. One was at
July 12, 2016
The Copacabana on 61st Street
which was the real Copa.
MN: You also originated the role of
Horse in the musical The Full
Monty. Was that show as much fun
to be in as it was to watch?
AD: It was outrageous fun because
we could be as pornographic as we
wanted and at the same time, we
were being embraced by normal
America who all wanted to come
and see our produce and
vegetables on display.
MN: Well, when I saw the show, the
lights got in the way.
AD: That was the idea [laughing].
Do you know about the Royal
Family command performance
scandal?
MN: No.
AD: Well, the Royal Family sits in
boxes on the side and the bright
lights are designed for a few
seconds to blind the audience
sitting in the orchestra for when we
strip down and are actually nude.
Well, the Royal Family is in their box
on the side, which means they are
between the lighting effect and the
stage. The very next day, the daily
papers in London read, “Royal
Mum sees American bum.” The Full
Monty really was on full display for
the Royal Family.
MN: You seem to have spent a lot
of your career in Chicago. Do you
have any go-to things to do while
you are in town?
AD: It’s not sexy but there is a
place I discovered in the French
Market called Raw. It’s a take-away
counter that features raw food. It’s
not rabbit food; it’s not just carrot
sticks. It’s actual cuisine that is
made from raw food. I tried it one
day and fell in love with it. Plus it
did great things for my energy and
skin.
MN: You are coming back to
Chicago for WOZ: A Rock Cabaret.
What can you tell me about the
show?
AD: It’s crazy fun, which is why I am
doing it. I was recently at the
Victory Gardens Theatre finishing a
residency and while there, I met
Kimberly Lawson who manages the
box office. She is one of those
people who smiles at you and you
fall in love. Kimberly and I bonded
and she asked if I wanted to check
out a late-night show and I asked
what it was and she said it was
WOZ. It’s a take on the Wizard of
Oz and I was, like, you know you
are talking to the Wiz? Kimberly
said, I know; that’s why I want you
to come. I went and fell out of my
seat in laughter. This year, they
came to me and said the guy
whose role I am taking could not
make it and asked if I would fill in
for him. I asked what are the
constraints? Fly you in, put you up
and it is five shows, and I said, let’s
do it!
MN: Your career has spanned 47
years.
AD: And there is more to come!
MN: Would you do it again?
AD: Yes, I would. I would adjust it in
some ways but I would definitely do
it again.

GRAB A FILM
Art of Film
FILM
Director Daniel Armando
Discusses His New Film,
Daddy’s Boy
By Casey Arasa
Daddy’s Boy, the latest film
release from queer film director
Daniel Armando, whisks audiences
from the barrio onto a gay porn set
and behind the closed doors of a
burlesque studio.
“In Latino culture, and most
cultures, men are taught to
suppress their feelings and to never
communicate them, especially to
other men,” he says. “Daddy's
Boy explores connections among
men as they allow themselves to
become vulnerable.”
The film centers around Manuel
(Jonathan Iglesias) and Max (Al
Miro), making their way to New
York City’s red light district;
Manuel's older brother, Jorge
(James Korni), dancing away the
emotional toll of an abusive
relationship; and Fabian (Joe
Lopez), a Puerto Rican father,
hiding his homosexuality. When the
worlds of these four men collide,
they explore the depths of their
gender and sexuality and each is
changed forever.
Casey Arasa:
What inspired
Daddy’s Boy?
Daniel Armando:
I was inspired by
the relationship
with my father.
How it used to be
one of a son
trying to get the
approval of a dad
and now it has
somewhat
reversed.
CA: How so?
DA: When you
grow up you learn
that your father
could only teach
you what he
knew; what was
handed to him by
his father. The
decisions you make as a father
subconsciously stay with your
children forever. And as a son, you
first see an example of what it
means to be a man from what kind
of man your father was. From him
you learn what to do and
sometimes, what not to
do.
CA: What is the
relationship with your
father like now?
DA: He understands
that I don't need him
like I use to and he
misses those days.
Today, we are more like
friends. All I want now
is for him to be happy
in his life. Any anger or
sadness I once held for
him is gone.
CA: Why did you
decide to set DADDY’S
BOY in the NYC porn
industry?
18
GRAB Magazine
July 12, 2016
Director Daniel Armando
DA: I thought it would be
interesting to see the characters in
sexually vulnerable situations.
CA: Vulnerability is a big theme in
the film.
DA: Yes, I explore the idea of
allowing oneself to be vulnerable
physically, but not emotionally. I
also explore the inability of men to
communicate and articulate
feelings, especially to other men.
CA: The film seems to
challenge what it means
to be a man today. DA: Many men remain
grounded in an
upbringing that prohibited
them from exploring the
feminine parts of their
selves. Or, if they do, it’s
more of a hush type of
thing where no one talks
about it. I hope it’s
something that changes in
the future.
CA: How does DADDY’S BOY
expand from your previous film,
WHAT IT WAS?
DA: Like DADDY’S BOY, WHAT IT
WAS featured minorities tackling
issues of sexual identity. I would
love people to consider both films
as a set where one (WHAT IT WAS)
deals with women and the other
(DADDY’S BOY) with men.
CA: How did you select the cast for
the film?
DA: My goal was to get an
ethnically diverse talent. I reached
out to each of the four leads and
worked with them individually,
really hammering away at who their
characters were.
CA: Why did you shoot the film in
black and white?
DA: My cinematographer (Ryan
Balas) introduced me to a lot of
French New Wave directors and
films; all shot in black and white. I
instantly immersed myself in that
world and thought it would
aesthetically fit well with DADDY’S
BOY. I wanted to give the film a
vintage look like it was plucked out
of that time period. CA: What do you hope
audiences walk away with
at the end of DADDY’S
BOY?
DA: I hope people leave
with a sense of nostalgia
and reflection. I love when
a film can make me think
about my life and my
experiences. I especially
hope it will inspire
dialogue among men.

The Aftermath of Orlando:
7 Relative Positives That
Came From Tragedy
By Mikey Rox
It’s been a few weeks since a
terroristic madman massacred 49
innocent partygoers in cold blood
and injured 53 others at Pulse
nightclub in Orlando, and while the
pain of the largest mass shooting in
U.S. history is still fresh for many of
us, some of the smoke has cleared,
giving way to more rational
perspective. Without the Everestlevel emotions that flooded our
collective consciousness in the
immediate wake of the attack
distorting our cognitive thinking –
and thus fueling our rage – we can
now take a step back from one of
the deadliest days in American and
LGBT history to appreciate what has
risen from our slain brothers and
sisters’ ashes. Like these seven
positive shockwaves.
It Lighted A Fire Under Our
Asses to Pursue More Aggressive
Gun Control Measures
Every time a notable mass
shooting takes place – “notable”
being the operative word here since
most mass shootings don’t get the
coverage they deserve – social
media erupts in a spectacular
mushroom cloud of pro- and antigun rhetoric from both sides of the
political fence. For days after the
Orlando killings, your friends and
family weighed in with their opinions
on gun control, primarily focused on
the infringement of Second
Amendment Rights, more stringent
background checks, banning
military-style weapons altogether,
and how to keep guns out of the
hands of those who are already
suspected terrorists. Alas, most of
that jibber-jabber is lip service for
posterity (though perhaps necessary
for the grieving process), since the
majority of those social-media
soapboxers won’t do anything
worthwhile to defend their position
outside of bitching about it on
Facebook and Twitter.
Yet there are still a few people
out there fighting the good fight.
24
Many of my own friends (and
yours too) signed petitions,
joined rallies, and reached out to
their local politicians begging –
no, demanding! – reform. Certainly
nothing did or will change overnight,
but at least those cries were heard:
Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris
Murphy, a staunch gun-control
advocate, led a nearly 15-hour
filibuster in the Senate a week after
the attack, and a day-long
Democrat-led sit-in drew 170
lawmakers to the House floor to
push Congress to vote on two
proposed gun-control measures a
week later. Neither effort was
successful in swaying Republicans
to enact common sense, but the
issue is now front and center, and it’s
not likely to go away until at least a
compromise is met.
It Humanized Us to Some of
Those Who Previously Demonized
Us
While those ridiculous, radical
Baptist pastors of the Internet were
foaming at the mouth at the thought
of our slaughter – and what a
surprise their Judgment Day will be
as a result – the early-morning
events of June 12 gave people we
know who we didn’t think were our
allies, who opposed our “lifestyle,”
or were otherwise indifferent to our
plight cause for pause. I can’t
promise you that those who
previously demonized us or
disagreed with our sexual orientation
have done a complete 180, but I can
tell you, at least in my personal
experience, that hearing about sons,
daughters, mothers, brothers, and
sisters being hunted down like
animals simply because they’re
LGBT or our supporters did serve to
humanized us to some of those who
didn’t quite understand us. Perhaps
their awakening was because they
were faced with the reality that it
could have been me or you –
somebody they love and care about
– in the club that night, or maybe
they finally realized that the killings
GRAB Magazine July 12, 2016
were the deadly manifestation of a
society that still harbors so much
homophobia. Either way, the
sentiment was palpable, and it could
be the sign of a turning point in not
only LGBT culture but also American
culture.
Our Communities Came
Together to Support Our Own
I’ve only been out and proud for
15 years or so, and while the LGBT
community has had hurdles to
overcome long before I was born in
1981, there’s arguably been no other
single tragedy that has devastated
us so much as this one – which is
why it was comforting to see, in the
aftermath of Orlando, that the title of
“LGBT community” lived up to what
that’s supposed to mean.
In my area of New York City and
the Jersey Shore, candlelight vigils
were hosted hours after news of the
killings broke; fundraisers and
benefits were underway; and our
bars and clubs were open for
business, serving as safe havens –
as they always have been – to
convene and mourn with “family.”
At my home near Asbury Park, N.J.,
a popular nightclub raised more
than $20,000 in a single evening to
support victims, a massive feat for
a small community that came out in
droves for its own.
Our Allies Came Out in Full
Force to Support Us
Along with our LGBT brothers
and sisters, our straight allies were
right beside us mourning death and
celebrating life as each passing day
exposed new information and
greater pain. That support was most
visible on social media, through
messages of condolence and the
alteration of profile photos to signify
that they stand with us. Each of us
probably has an anecdote about at
least one straight ally in their life that
lent an ear or a shoulder as we
grieved. Mine regards a friend who
sent me a small care package from
LGBTQ Concierge, filled with
goodies and accompanied by an
uplifting note of solidarity and
strength. It was a touching reminder
to me that none of us are in this
alone, and we should appreciate
more those who help us fight
oppression despite that they really
don’t have to.
America’s Inclusive
Corporations Solidified Their
Status as Friends of Dorothy
Sure, providing humanitarian
assistance and showing financial
support during a national period of
mourning is good for public relations,
but let’s put that cynicism aside.
Instead, we should feel honored that
we have corporate allies who will risk
backlash from some of its consumer
base to give when it’s needed most.
Pledges came in fast and furious
following the tragedy, including $1
million from the Walt Disney Co.;
$500,000 for Darden Restaurants;
$400,000 from the NFL and Florida’s
three NFL teams; and $100,000 from
JetBlue, which also flew victims’
family members to Orlando for free.
At press time, the Pulse Victims
Fund, created by Equality Florida
had reached $6.9 million.
I also think it’s important to point
out that a local Orlando Chick-fil-A
franchise opened its doors the day of
the tragedy – a Sunday, a day when
it’s traditionally closed – to feed the
long line of locals waiting to donate
blood to the victims. Maybe it’s time
to forgive the company for president
and CEO Dan Cathy’s idiotic
comments on same-sex marriage.
Can’t hold a grudge forever.
Pride Celebrations Returned to
Their Roots of Visibility and
Activism
I’ve been a vocal opponent in my
writing over the years to the
sexualized aspect of Pride – parents
shouldn’t have to explain to their
children what a dildo is during a
parade – so it’s refreshing to see that
this year’s celebrations have returned
to their roots of visibility and
activism. As an LGBT community, we
should demonstrate our diversity and
our dedication to fighting for equal
rights instead of our favorite
bedroom positions as we invite the
communities in which we live to
celebrate one love in one world. It’s
too bad that the reinstatement of real
LGBT values isn’t under better
circumstances, but we got to start
(over) somewhere.
We Finally Told the World
We’re Not Gonna Take It –
Anymore
If the Orlando tragedy did
anything for our community, it made
us fucking mad. So mad that we’re
not going to take it – anymore. We’re
not taking anymore guff or
discrimination or bullying or
conversation therapy or religious
domination from anybody, ever
again. Enough is enough. Forty-nine
of us were mowed down for being
who we are, and that isn’t and never
will be acceptable. We must always
remember that, and you must always
keep being you. Stay loud, stay
proud, and stay vigilant. The Pulse
victims did not die in vain, and it’s
our duty now to prove that until we
live in a society where we’re treated
as equals and no less.

TRANSGENDER
GRAB HOLLY
The Revenge
of Gloria Allred
By Holly Maholm
Sometimes, I am proud to be a
lawyer. In May, the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops revealed that during
the one-year period ending June
2015, the Church paid out
$153,000,000 in damages to victims
of clergy sex abuse. During that same
year, an additional 384 new victims
came forward with claims of sex
abuse.
But this is trivial. Between 1950
and 2015, the Church in the U.S. paid
out a total of $3.5 billion (!) in
damages for clergy sex abuse, a
staggering amount and due entirely to
the fact that lawyers for those victims
filed lawsuits against the Church, for
which the Church was forced to pay
up.
When I read these numbers, I was
shocked. How could the Church have
failed to take effective action to
prevent those crimes, if for no other
reason than the monstrous cost? (Not
to mention the monstrous sin those
crimes represent, but which does not
seem to have unduly troubled Church
leaders).
How could such a large,
bureaucratic, long-lived, worldwide
organization – financially responsible
for the upkeep and support of
hundreds of thousands of churches,
nuns and priests – have failed to stop
the hemorrhaging of all that money?
You might think they couldn’t see any
28
GRAB Magazine
way to prevent those crimes. But you
would be wrong.
I remember reading about the
famous preacher Reverend Billy
Graham – and one unusual “policy”
to which he scrupulously adhered. He
had an office in his church, and –
although he was a famous TV
preacher – he still tended to his flock.
And it would sometimes happen that
a young (and perhaps attractive)
female parishioner would come to
him for counseling. But despite his
fame, he would not turn such a
person away.
But what he did do is this: He
would never meet with such a woman
in private. He would never take her
into his office and close the door.
Instead, he would ask his confidential
secretary to join them, so there was
always another person present when
he ministered to one of his flock. He
would never allow such a young
woman to be alone with him.
The reason is plain. It is only
“human nature” that out of 1,000 such
women he might counsel, there will be
that one who – after meeting alone
with the Reverend – will be seen two
weeks later standing in front of
cameras and microphones on the
courthouse steps, accompanied by
Gloria Allred (famous lawyer, woman’s
advocate and Handmaiden of Satan;
but I repeat myself), accusing the
Reverend of groping her in private.
This was something neither the
Reverend nor his church wanted to
see happen. Hence the policy I
described.
But if you think about it, you will
realize that – although this
policy was there to
protect the Reverend and
his church – it’s also true
that it protected those
young women. (Though I
doubt they needed
protection from this
particular preacher.)
Having that policy in
effect did not cost
Reverend Graham nor his
church any extra
expense, and at the end
of the year … surprise!
Neither the Reverend nor
his church had suffered
any visitation from Gloria
Allred,, nor had his
church paid out any
millions of dollars to
lawyers (and their clients)
on account of “clergy
July 12, 2016
abuse.”
Now ask yourself: If you (a slim,
attractive young woman, having long
and shapely legs, an impertinent
tushy and an ample bosom) were to
travel to Rome, and if you were to visit
the Vatican and ask to see the Pope
for “consultation,” do you think you
would be admitted into the Pope’s
“inner sanctum” where you might
meet him alone in private – with the
door closed? Not likely. You can bet
the Pope follows the identical policy
as the Reverend, and for the same
reason.
So if Reverend Graham could
follow this policy, and if the Pope can
do the same, why can’t our local
churches (and not just the Catholic
ones) implement this protective policy
… where children are concerned?
Aren’t those 12-year-olds just as
much at risk of abuse as those
(irresistibly hot) young women I
described?
Is it really possible that despite
having paid out billions of dollars in
damages, our churches have not yet
grasped that fact that there are alltoo-many priests and preachers and
“youth pastors” who are not to be
trusted to take a child into an office
and close the door?
The time has come to institute the
Reverend’s policy in churches
throughout the land. We should no
longer allow our children to be abused
and exploited by these “men of God”
who hide their lust behind a thin
veneer of piety. If Reverend Graham
could be faithful to this policy,
certainly others who claim to do
God’s work can do so, as well. Holly Maholm is a transgender

GRAB DAN
Will Powers
By Dan
Well, we are finally into the
summer! And is your summer being
filled with fun and fancy or too
much food from going out to dinner
more? Getting fatter is easy but
there is a way to eat a little
healthier with exactly no will power
needed. A few small change-ups in
where and how you feed your face
can help you make better food
decisions.
Self-control is tough when
unhealthy foods are so heavily
promoted everywhere and picking
a doughnut over oatmeal isn’t
always just about will power.
Remember, a hungry bottom is a
bad date. But we can shift around
our environment and make better
things happen with less work. Here
are the top three tools of the trade
to make food. First, use a nonstick
skillet so that you don’t add
additional calories cooking by
sautéing or pan-frying foods with
less butter or oil and a kitchen
scale so you can learn to eyeball
portion sizes and not
underestimate the calories you are
eating. Even if you use it,
sometimes it is nice to double-
36
check portions every
so often. Also, a
blender to make
vegetable purées,
dips, healthy soups
and smoothies is very
handy. Oh, and one
more thing I
recommend is a butler
to put it all together.
Eat only at the
counter. You will eat
less and feel fuller.
Eating at a kitchen
table or counter is
associated with a lower body mass
index (BMI) and possibly because it
is easier to be “present” with the
meal in that environment. Running
around and eating creates less
opportunity, so sit down and
pretend it is a huge cock sandwich.
Eating with a screen (TV or iPhone)
on is linked with a higher BMI and
probably because of the
distraction. One study found that
distracted people ate 10 percent
more calories and also eat more at
the following meals.
Fluff it up; make it look bigger.
Healthier foods that have better
visuals taste better. Take that
chicken dish and give it a
makeover; you are gay after all. Put
the vegetables or whole grains on
bottom, the chicken breast gets the
middle and some
colorful garnish
on top gives the
meal dimensions
and height. It’s
the same visual
trick you play
with your cock
pix, just with
different types of
meat. In fact,
what makes my
junk look so
appealing are
the different
sizes that entice
every hungry
bottom: The
huge bulbous
head, the long,
thick shaft and
each of the
plump three
testicles. If
GRAB Magazine July 12, 2016
everything on your plate or in my
pants were the same size, the
whole city would likely be obese
and very loose in the caboose, so
keep it interesting.
Customize dishes and cups,
cock rings and jockstraps. Control
portion sizes. One trick to having a
bigger dick is to where cock rings
and jockstraps that push that shit
up. One trick to eating less is using
smaller dishes. The opposite
applies too. If you eat salad or
veggies from a large plate, you are
likely to serve yourself more and
eat more. So for dinner, if I have a
two-bit slut over, I will usually feed
them a Tic-Tac on a small plate
(orange flavor) and then for dessert,
put the diz-natch on a platter to
enjoy multiple servings. Small
plates are better for rice, pasta,
processed and red meats.
Color-code your meals. Tempt
your tummy with nut honey.
Seriously, how selfish would I be if I
only did one type of fruit? The
same goes with food. You have to
do every type to get a good mix.
From veggies to fruits and whole
grains, appreciate the diversity in
colors.

GRAB A CAMERA
Photographer
Inked Kenny
By Anthony Meade
InkedKenny is a man who loves
men – clothed, but especially naked –
both physically and emotionally. And
when he takes pictures of naked
men, that love and passion
transcends the medium in which he
works, and turns those images into
art. It doesn’t take a college degree
or a practiced eye to recognize art, or
when someone is an artist. Because
when you see an image created by
someone who has a bone-deep love,
a driving passion for what they’re
shooting, you just…know.
ANTHONY MEADE: Tell me a little
bit about yourself. Where were you
born?
INKED KENNY: Macau… an island
off of Hong Kong, a Portuguese
colony back in the day. I was found
abandoned in Macau at the age of
six months. I was adopted and
brought to Vancouver, B.C., where I
grew up, as youngest of three and
only son.
AM: When did you come out as gay?
IK: Realizing I was gay around the
age of eight, questioning myself why
I would be staring at men in
washrooms, and finally at the age of
11, actually cruising men in
department store washrooms which
gave my first gay experience (by my
choice) during the summer between
grade six to seven and the rest is a
big ol’ gay history.
AM: When did you first pick up a
camera and decide this is what I want
to do?
IK: I took photography in grade eight
and hated it … got kicked out of high
school and pursued a career in
hairdressing, that led to makeup and
to working with photographers in
fashion and advertising, which then
led to creative direction for special
events
for 12 years before picking up a
camera again in 2008 on a random
situation by accident. I was asked to
shoot some Venetian masks for a
client of a friend of mine. The client
was so pleased with the results and
after seeing my photos blown life-
40
GRAB Magazine
size, I thought, let’s give this a
try
AM: I understand that erotic
photography is the one you are
most passionate about. Among
all the types of art out there,
what is it about erotica in
particular that caught your
interest? How did you get into
erotic photography?
IK: After my first shoot, I called
in a bunch of a friends to do
some test shots which turned
into my first series, “The Fight
Club,” which was published in
Instigator magazine a couple
months later, so I guess, just by
default, it manifested into
homoerotic genre.
AM: The line of work you’re in is
usually associated with males, is that
right? What is the usual reaction of
people when you tell them what you
do, and how do you deal with it?
IK: I’ve chosen to photograph what
inspires me. My default answer is that
I always say, I’ve chosen a very
specific genre that is not the easiest
to keep relevant, but I am still at it,
and loving every aspect of it!
AM: Your photos, artful and tasteful
erotic art as opposed to full-on
pornography? How do you draw the
line between them?
IK: I believe my images are much
more suggestive over the obvious in
what porn is. I’d rather show a bit of
bulge or top of a crack, then just a
dick centered at camera, and I much
prefer a “scene” to be before the act
itself or directly after.
AM: With the many works that you
have done, what would you say is/are
your most memorable project’s?
IK: My project for ACON, How Hard
project in Sydney, Australia allowed
me to push the edges of my
photography and what I was allowed
to show there and not so much in
North America and also allowing me
into some historic landmarks to shoot
that no other local photographers
were able to get before I did.
AM: With your inkedKenny photo
book, what was the process of going
through the thousands of photos and
choosing the ones that went into the
book? Was there something special
about those photos? People?
IK: The Men of inkedKenny photo
book was a nine-month layout
July 12, 2016
process over Skype and pdf via
email. Midway through, my editor and
I decided to make it a five year
retrospective of my works from day
one to present at that time. The
hardest part was deciding on the
cover in which I won that battle,
choosing a closeup face and a blackand-white cover which they rarely do.
AM: Given the chance, is there a
model or person with whom you
would like to work with in the future
and in what kind of project?
IK: Colin Farrell and simply just
because he exudes sexuality in such
suggestive way. Enough said!
AM: You have an upcoming
featured exhibit that will be featured
at the Center on Halsted. What are
the photos that will be featured?
What was the process of choosing
these particular photos? Is there a
theme and a portrayal of
inkedKenny that you wanted people
to see in these photos?
IK: SNATCHED came to be by me
wanting to call it SNATCH. Instead
of me saying photographed, I
always use the word captured. Put
two and two together and out came
SNATCHED. The exhibit is curated
and the final selections were made
by David.

EuroGames
Helsinki 2016
By George Melichar
Forty nations and 1,400 athletes
participated in sporting events in
Helsinki, Finland. The EuroGames
is one of the world’s largest LGBTQ
events, which was founded by the
European Gay and Lesbian Sports
Federation (EGLSF) in 1992 to fight
discrimination, promote integration
and to promote and support the
right to practice their sport
regardless of sexuality.
Many activities were offered,
including track & field, dance sport,
swimming, tennis, football, golf and
a PRIDE run. Cyclists from Russia
rode approximately 250km from
Vyborg, Russia to Helsinki, Finland
as part of the Freedom Bike Ride
2016 to participate in EuroGames
sporting events. With overnight
stops in tents along the Kings
Road, the Freedom Bike Ride is in
solidarity of the Russian LGBTQ
community’s path to their freedom.
The Opening Ceremony was a
public event that took place at
Citizens’ Square. The athlete
participants’ parade ended at the
EuroGames Village with
performances by local artists and
42
GRAB Magazine
Eurovision song
contest participant
Sandhja Kuivalainen.
Exploring and
navigating the city of
Helsinki was not
difficult. Public
transportation could
take you almost
anywhere in the city
but I would
recommend walking to
see all the great local
cafes and boutiques.
Street signs are in
Finnish and Swedish.
Knowing what language your map
is written is important. I found
Helsinki to be very vegetarian and
vegan food-friendly with great
parks to host a picnic.
The PRIDE Run passed by the
Olympic Stadium. Most of the
distance was a metropolitan trail
run in a forest. I noticed that one of
the racecourse volunteers was
Olympian Aiysat Yusuf-Aromire
and rocked a high-five with her as I
passed by.
The PRIDE Parade had
approximately 30,000 march
July 12, 2016
participants. I walked with the drag
queens of Helsinki. A local
reminisced about the first PRIDE
Parades in Helsinki and what the
human rights movement has grown
into. The PRIDE Parade ended at
the EuroGames 2016 Closing
Ceremony and was a day of
continued united community
celebration.

Ezra Furman Announces
New EP Big Fugitive Life,
Out August 19th
Introducing YAYSH
On the personality front, Yaysh
is as outspoken as her music is
eclectic. “Music these days has
become so watered down and
almost non-individualized,” says the
Boulder, Colorado native. “I have
such a big mouth that I need
somewhere to put all my vibe, my
heart and music is a huge vehicle
for that.”
“I would say my style could be
described as if Adele and Kanye
had a baby, and Drake was my
cousin,” says Yaysh. As brash as
that statement is, the singer/rapper
can back it up.
Now based in LA, Yaysh
explains why she wants to
represent a new kind of sex
symbol. “I don't look like a model
but I am sexy, and I’m going to
propagate the shit out of that and
my open sexuality. I'm kind of
ordinary, extra ordinary, but my soul
shines so fucking bright that my
sexiness is a complete sexiness;
rather than just the flesh. I'm sexy
because I know myself."
A bold balance of talent and
attitude, Yaysh is the exact musical
force the pop landscape needs
right now. “I want people to feel free
when they hear my music and
almost a little embarrassed or
stripped cuz my shit is just real and
inescapable, magnetic, and
delicious.” Music fans will get a
chance to envelope themselves in
Yaysh’s world when her album
July 12, 2016
Following a winning
performance at the Glastonbury
festival and just over a year since
the release Perpetual Motion
People, his hugely successful breakout album, Ezra Furman has
today announced news of a new 6track EP entitled Big Fugitive
Life, due for release 19th August on
Bella Union. The EP's barnstorming
opening track is, 'Teddy I'm Ready'
“Big Fugitive Life is a group of
our favorite orphaned songs that
have banded together to form a
unit. They are focused on the
theme of the mind unmoored-those of us who have been left to
drift unsupervised through the
modern world. Four of these tracks
were originally intended for
inclusion on 'Perpetual Motion
People'. Two of them were for 'The
Year of No Returning'. But they
weren't ready until now.
The first three songs are our
vision of rock and roll. A madness
that overtakes your mind and body.
It's wanting to go somewhere
you've never been, knowing you're
on your way. The second side is
acoustic guitar as open wound, a
troubled mind on display. Emotional
in a different way, tender like a
bruise. It includes “The Refugee,”
my first song entirely concerned
with my Jewish background and
present, a song dedicated to my
grandfather who fled the Nazis as
well as to all of the refugees
desperate for a home today.
We dedicate this record to
refugees of all kinds, all over the
world. May all the wanderers find
the homes they seek, and and may
those with power welcome them as
fellow citizens of humanity.
This feels like an end of a
chapter for me, musically. A
beautiful, insane chapter. Keep an
ear out for our next phase - we've
been dreaming big.” For more information visit

Fuck You I'm Infamous
2016. NakedSword Originals
Directed by mr. Pam
Starring: Ryan Rose, Diesel Washington,
Cameron Diggs, JD Phoenix, Colton Grey, Vadim
Black, Tyler Rush and Draven Torres
There are NO made-up stories in this movie -everything these performers are infamous for is
true. Have Ryan Rose and Draven Torres been to
jail? Yes, and they own it. But now it's time for
them to get naked and the way Torres is sucking
on Rose's
dick and
the way
Rose is
playing
with
Torres butt
we know
it's Rose
doing the
fucking. I
couldn't
help but
think did
Torres
learn how
to take in
like a man
in jail?
Diesel
Washington is
infamous
for his
Twitter
wars and
Tyler Rush
is just a freaky dirty bird. Rush is sucking on big
Washington dick right away with the good boy
Diesel doing some sucking of his own (plus some
major ass eating!). It's obvious Diesel will be
fucking some Rush ass. Bad boys JD Phoenix and
Vadim Black are next, and after sucking on each
other it's Phoenix getting his ass eaten... we all
know he'll also be the one to get fucked. Last, but
not least, we have Cameron Diggs, who was first
arrested in high school and has spent five years in
prison. He's with Colton Grey, who likes to be
entertained but it's not always legal. Grey is the
first to suck dick and also the first to get fucked. As
I watch Grey, I thought about his really nice dick
and how it's a shame he doesn't get to "use" it.
3.8 Stars!
