The Eater`s Guide to Local Food in Maryland
The Eater’s Guide to
Local Food in Maryland
Eat Local— Save the Bay
By supporting locally sourced and sustainably grown foods,
Buy Fresh Buy Local encourages informed decisions to eat well,
preserve farmland, and support the local economy while
taking steps to save a national treasure, the Chesapeake Bay.
1
Buy Fresh Buy Local is a national program that connects consumers to fresh, locally grown food through the
development of a community-based network. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation continues to work as the primary coordinator for the regional sector after taking over the programs’ Chesapeake chapter in 2010. The
Buy Fresh Buy Local program aims to educate the public about the importance of local and sustainable food
sources within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. By providing information about events and resources such as
this food guide, the campaign hopes to inform individuals about the economic and environmental benefits
that local and sustainably produced goods can have within their communities.
The campaign was started to create a brand that will allow consumers to identify reliable sources for consciously produced local foods and products. The mission of the program is not only to increase knowledge
around the benefits of locally grown and produced goods but also to reinforce the numerous benefits that
eating local can provide. Each chapter engages their community through memberships and partnerships, in
this case specifically to those within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Local Farmers' Markets in Maryland
Over the past few years, farmers’ markets have been growing in
popularity giving Marylanders access to locally sourced produce. The
Buy Fresh Buy Local Chesapeake Chapter works to organize people
who want to eat more sustainably, whether that be through local
foods, organic produce or both. While there are a number of ways that
we can help reduce the carbon footprint of our diets, supporting
markets is a great first step. Here you can identify farmers’ markets
near you so you can support your local farmers and build stronger
communities. The farmers’ markets are typically made up of vendors,
most often farmers, who set up outdoor markets to sell their produce
in their local communities. They are usually open during the entire
growing season, offering a variety of produce and products.
Why Farmers’ Markets?
When you buy from local farmers who
practice sustainable agriculture you…
-Get fresh, in-season food
-Support farmers that work to do the
right thing for the Bay
-Support the local economy
-Know exactly where your food comes
from , who grew it and how it was grown
Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your plate.
This transport uses great amounts of natural resources, contributes to
pollution, as well as creating more trash with extra packaging. By purchasing
produce and other locally sourced products you can reduce the footprint of
your diet and produce less waste! Conventional agriculture often uses more
resources than local, sustainable agriculture which can end up polluting the
water, land, and air with toxic agricultural by-products. Food at the farmers
market is transported shorter distances and is generally grown using
methods that minimize the impact on the earth.

Local CSAs in Maryland
A CSA, or community supported agriculture, is a system where families & individuals buy and
receive weekly or bi-weekly “shares” of fresh produce from a local farm operation. Members pay
growers in advance, and in return receive a variety of produce of the highest quality. CSAs
encourage communities and let buyers see where their food comes from while making a
commitment to local food and the local economy.
Do you know where your food comes from?
Buying local helps strengthen communities, protects natural
resources, supports farm economies and promotes healthy
eating! CSAs can offer the perfect inspiration for trying out a
dish with a fun new ingredient!
When you become a member of a CSA you are
purchasing a share of the vegetables from that year’s
harvest. Shares can vary by type and size in order to fit a
family’s needs as well as increase the profits of the farm.
CSAs typically run from June until November so be sure
to look up when sign up starts for the next seasons
shares. Some farmers even offer a fall and winter share which allows you to enjoy seasonal
produce year round. CSAs vary greatly, with different payment plans and pick -up schedules, you
are bound to find one that fits your needs! Explore your local community supported agriculture
options today and sign up for a share next season!

Local Meat and Eggs in Maryland
Grass-fed products are growing in popularity as the conversion back to rotational grazing brings benefits to cows,
humans and the environment. Animals raised on grass are healthier and spread manure naturally without burning
fossil fuels. This pasture provides permanent cover reducing soil erosion and absorbing nutrients and water like a
sponge. Meat, milk, and eggs from these animals are higher in nutrition with less fat, fewer calories, more omega-3
fatty acids, and more cancer fighting CLA, conjugated linoleic acid.
100% grass-fed cattle produce more nutritious meat than cattle raised
on grain-fed diets. In addition to the health benefits for consumers; a
grass-fed diet is also healthier for the cows. Cows are ruminants, and
their digestive systems enable them to capture the nutritional value of
grass which has harvested energy from the sun. When fed grains the

to living and eating healthy.

shorter lifespan and ultimately a lower quality meat product.
Rotational and Pasture Based Grazing will be a key component to improving soil quality,
reversing climate change and saving the Chesapeake Bay.
The Maryland Grazers Network is led by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and is a
collaboration of CBF, the University of Maryland Extension, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Maryland farmers. The network is a program
that pairs experienced beef, dairy, sheep, and poultry producers with farmers who
want to learn grazing techniques. The Grazers Network Project Team provides
technical assistance and includes experts in pasture and forage management,
financial management, marketing, and funding resources.
With collaboration from Future Harvest Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, the Maryland Grazers Network provides funds for the Amazing Grazing Directory which lists over 200 grazers in
Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The pastures of Chesapeake region farms are home to increasing numbers of livestock animals being raised
the “new” old-fashioned way—outdoors, exercising naturally, and grazing on grass the way nature intended.
Use the Amazing Grazing directory to help find local sources for steaks, ground beef, leg of lamb, sausage,
bacon, eggs, smoked hams, handmade cheeses, Thanksgiving turkeys, Christmas geese, and more—all fresh
from the pasture and direct from the farmer to you!

Maryland’s Local Creameries
Moving beyond produce, you can also look for other products such as milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream within your
community. By supporting your local creamery, you are helping to support and encourage the use of sustainable
practices that will help to reduce the impacts of agriculture and the food industry on the Chesapeake Bay.
Baltimore County
Prigel Family Creamery
4852 Long Green Rd, Glen Arm, MD 21057
(410) 510-7488
The Prigel family has been farming in the Long Green Valley for over 100 years and five generations. Owner Bob Prigel and his family
opened the creamery to allow Bellevale Farm to be economically and environmentally sustainable as a continuing part of Long Green
Valley’s agricultural heritage. Organic practices ensure the good health of our herd and the high quality of our milk. Bellevale Farms
was certified organic in 2008 and their 180 milk cows graze fresh grass day and night.
Charlottetown Farm
Freeland, MD
(443) 791-2626
Charlottetown Farm is a family-owned farm dedicated to providing fresh artisan goat milk products to farm-to-table restaurants,
consumers, and retailers in the mid-Atlantic region. They believe that “...goat milk is the quintessential ‘local food’; the unique flavor
and smooth, silky texture of fresh goat milk is best consumed within hours of milking, and the further the milk is transported, the more
it loses those special qualities. So local is essential.” Pam and Mike Miller along with their daughter Allison provide genuine, loving care
to their goats who contribute to their success with products such as chevre, ricotta, feta, yogurt, goats as well as desserts such as their
famous goat cheese cheesecake, fudge, truffles and cajeta , a delicious caramel sauce.
Caroline County
Nice Farms Creamery
25786 Auction Rd Federalsburg, MD 21632
(410) 829-4456
Nice Farms Creamery, LLC is located on the 201 acre Miller and Tanner Dairy Farm in American Corner, Maryland. This Creamery is

Miller and Chase Tanner relocated their dairy cows from New Jersey. For 23 years, the herd has been pastured on 118 acres. These cows,
Holsteins and Holstein crosses, produce high quality, all natural milk for the Creamery's yogurt and Cream-line milk products produced
on site.
Carroll/Frederick County
Woodbourne Creamery at Rock Hill Orchard
28600 Ridge Road, Mount Airy MD 21771
(301) 938-1030
Owners John and Mary Frederick have been told that they have the first all new dairy in Montgomery County in sixty years and the
first all pasture robotic milking dairy in North America. The Owners both grew up as “city-folk”, John in Chevy Chase and Mary on
Staten Island. Limited by the size of their original Germantown farm the couple purchased the Rock Hill Orchard where they graze
dairy cows, have viable orchards, a pick your own business and an on-farm market.
Frederick County
South Mountain Creamery
8305 Bolivar Rd. Middletown, MD 21769
(301) 371-8565
Owners Randy and Karen Sowers manage South Mountain Creamery, Maryland's first on-site dairy processing plant that delivers
all-natural and farm fresh products to your doorstep. They deliver to 8,500 customers weekly and have a radius that includes DC,
Baltimore, Arlington, and many other areas in the four state region. South Mountain Creamery has a store on the farm that sells
products to local customers. Farm opened daily to visitors to viewing of cow milking process and for calf feeding time, see website or call.
Washington County
Clear Spring Creamery
12621 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD 21722
(301) 842-2630
Family owned for over 100 years, Clear Spring Creamery serves as Maryland's first organic farmstead that produces all grass based
dairy products. Our animals are treated with care and are able to live their life as nature intended, on pasture and in the fresh air.
Cows are grazed using an intensive rotational grazing system and are never given hormones. Every acre of the farm is planted in
perennial grasses, ensuring environmental sustainability.

Maryland's Seafood and Aquaculture
This wouldn’t be a Chesapeake Bay region food guide without a seafood section! Fresh, local, and sustainably caught
seafood is available all across the watershed. And there are ever growing markets for aquaculture as well. Oyster
aquaculture is the sustainable practice of farming oysters, providing food, and reducing harvesting pressures on the
wild oyster population. This wild oysters are a keystone species in the Chesapeake Bay. As filter feeders, they remove
sediment and algae that pollute the Bay as each adult oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water a day!

Maryland's Apiaries
Bees are responsible for pollinating a third of everything we eat. Not
only is the future of our food system dependent on them but they
play a vital role in sustaining the planet’s ecosystems. Beyond their
monetary value for maintaining our fragile food supply, bees also
make crucial contributions to ecosystems around the world. Bees are
the “guardians of the food chain and the biodiversity of our species”.

Colony Collapse Disorder
Bees are important to our food security and the
ecosystems in which they live and travel. A disorder
known as Colony Collapse threatens bees across the
United States, making now a better time than ever to
support local apiaries and their healthy bee colonies.
“Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), which is syndrome
defined as a dead colony with no adult bees or dead bee
bodies but with a live queen and usually honey and immature bees still present. No scientific cause for CCD has
been proven.”

Dining out and eating sustainable, local foods have not

different wines to choose from, made with various varieties of grapes, in four growing regions. Visitors to a local
winery can experience a brief history in winemaking, tours, tastings and beautiful scenery.
A Taste of Maryland
Local wineries have numerous tastings, promotions
and events open to the public. They are often open
year-round for visits by appointment.

Drink Local— Save the Bay
Breweries
Supporting local breweries is a great way to invest money
back into the economy as most small craft brewers support
the local community. By purchasing from local microbreweries you are not only improving the local economy but you
can enjoy that cold beer with added benefits that come from
knowing what went into it and how it was made.
How to Support Your Local Brewer
-Visit your local brew pub and sample their beer
-If offered, take a tour of the facility to see first
hand how the beer is made
-Attend a beer festival that celebrates local brewers
-Support local beer bars and pubs by dining out.
Call ahead or check their website!
